Due to language differences, human perception and ego, hands-on work with Animal can be challenging. Injury to students can be a possibility. IPT is not responsible for safety concerns during the IPTouch process. ALL IPT programs support veterinary consultation if indicated. Your veterinarian should meet your pet before injury or illness manifests. Review IPTouch Policy Guideline concepts for your state concerning animal handling protocols. IPT Policy Guidelines are updated and participants should have a full understanding of IPTouch ethics, safety, precautions & scope of practice. These are posted on IPT’s educational sites. Proceeding with this course indicates you understand and accept IPTouch Policy Guidelines. Class Rule: NO Sad Pet Stories Allowed!

What is IPTouch  IPTouch activation is permission patterns guided by ANIMALS: Neurological Bonding Mechanisms, Parasympathetic Nervous System, GATE Theory, Oxygenated Blood Flow.  IPTs non medical hands on animal communication techniques are a must for adopted & displaced animals, rescue sanctuaries, pet sitters, animal trainers, owners, groomers, canine & equine police, guide dogs & ponies, endurance & performing horses...  IPTouch techniques like Elephant Hug, Animal Vibes, Tail Power, Growler, Snaking, Petters Press & many more 'touch' ALL species (except Jellyfish).  Amy has spent over 30 years working with displaced dogs, feral cats, cows , goats, racing horses… as well as wildlife from Macaw parrots, Burmese pythons, monkeys, dolphins & more.  As she became more in tune with these creatures she became aware of very specific 'TOUCH' approaches that created animal permission, tension releasing wellbeing, communication & bonded mutual respect.  Innovative Pet Touch (IPTouch) was born. Innovative Pet Therapy

7

Young: Bonding is the FIRST step to 'training' cooperation. LOVE will create attention goals that LAST and your pet will readily respond to you and vice versa! Elderly: Healthy movement, balance, joint lubrication, bathroom habits and eating desires are NEEDED for animal health. IPT can help. Adopted: Oh Yes! By bonding & sharing new memories of affection & respect, adopted animals will know IPTouch and a human’s LOVE! Athletes: Research shows active pets have a higher probability of physical dis-ease & general discomfort as they age. IPT can comfort this natural process.

For Every Animal in the Universe

Displaced Pets & Wildlife: Activation of the bonding mechanism will allow rescuers to assess and handle these creatures as they prepare to send them back to their original homes if appropriate. If not, captivity will be a welcome venue with IPTouch. Rainbow Bridge preparation: IPTouch will share the continuation of your love & your connection together as your pet transitions over the RB...a part of life. Humans: Respecting other life forms through IPT Will make you a better person. I PROMISE!! Innovative Pet Therapy

8

The Mind: Animal & Human: Touch time together becomes longer and the animal sometimes even requests it. Animals close their eyes during IPTouch. You both begin to breathe together during IPTouch sessions. You can change the animal’s position comfortably because they resemble a “noodle.” You and the animal kingdom begin to communicate with “heart” instead of “command.” Outside: You can touch your animals everywhere. Joints move comfortably and are relaxed. Animal posture relaxes. Rounded backs straighten. Tails move more. Movement balances and strengthens. Inside: You are easily aware of animal vital signs such as pulse, breathing, skin temperature / tension, and capillary refill. Eating, sleeping, and “potty” habits become balanced and healthy. Sorry, did I mention flatulence? Yes, this can be a sign of relaxation. The Spirit: More running, playing, and smiling for both of you. Cooperation will become easier. The animal wants to grasp your language because you have begun to appreciate theirs. Animals become more peaceful during social activities and interactions. The Human: You have truly found your best friend and are on the human path to the art of Animal Communication.

IPTouch Will…

IPTouch is composed of 4 theories  'Permission' Approaches: The goal is to decrease tension patterns

(either emotional or physical) by activation of the parasympathetic relaxation response. These are a must for rescued pets & wildlife that are unsure of 'touch' and close communication with strangers.  'Blocking' Approaches are for IPTouch consent activation. This is used to facilitate passive Positional Elongation (PE) & comfortable active body motion. These are for pets that are having postural tension patterns during both active & passive activities.  'Gentling' Nutrition Approaches are for the improvement of soft tissue nutrition for healthy ACTIVE motion. This is VERY important for walks, play time, in and out of the car toleration, grooming needs, sporting events, as well as potty and sleep comfort.  IPTouch 'Positional Elongation' Specials are GOALS within IPTouch recipes for active self stretching & physical elongation such as wing flapping, tail wagging, rolling...

Innovative Pet Therapy

10

Tension Patterns  Tension from life such as sports, travel, fatigue, boredom…can cause skin

tension, creating fascia (connective tissue) to stick. This is a natural tension pattern.

 Fascial sticking causes poor muscular hydration. Oxygenated blood can’t

reach muscles due to constricted blood vessels.

 Muscles shorten and become ischemic due to lactic acid waste products

and lack of oxygen. This hurts. Because the muscle cannot be used at its full capacity, a decrease in muscle power results.

 Decreased joint movement follows next. Because of decreased active

movement, joints are not lubricated enough.

 The animal may become agitated or depressed and finds it difficult to pay

attention or cooperate with humans. Dis-ease has set in.

 IPTouch can unlock tension patterns and reverse this process preventing

tension patterns from becoming too severe and causing disease. Use IPTouch for animal wellness.

Innovative Pet Therapy

11

Tension Pattern Observation Skin, lips, ears, BODIES…should move, feel soft & have a healthy warm temperature! What type of tension pattern may stress, emotional or nutritional, create??

12

IPTouch Safe & Ethical Awareness Safety, Contraindications, Precautions, Scope of Practice Before an IPTouch session begins, a true IPTouch AMCP understands when NOT to IPTouch. Safety and veterinarian guidance when indicated is the sign of an educated AMCP.

Innovative Pet Therapy

13

IPTouch Approach  Bonding, communication, pet awareness, responsibility.  NO Stretching: IPT uses Positional Elongation WITH animal   

  

permission. This facilitates a natural body opening. IPT does not allow restraint or tethering of pets during IPTouch sessions. Owner homework & owner session attendance is strongly encouraged for owners to take over IPTouch responsibilities. Word DISEASE is not used (this is vet pathology). IPT uses dis-ease (WITH a hyphen) for tension pattern relaxation ( PNS activation) . No joint: IPTouch is soft tissue nutrition or PNS activation for improved communication, well-being, & bonded loving awareness. NO nutritional or herbalistic counseling allowed. This begins with direct vet diagnostic evaluation. IPTouch education includes: IPTouch AMCP curriculum includes contraindications, precautions, safety, Scope of Practice, Ethics… Innovative Pet Therapy

14

IPTouch Professionalism           

If you use a safety awareness form & the pet owner is under 18 Mom or Dad can sign. Have owners at IPT sessions learn what you are doing and give them homework. This creates IPT consistency, pet comfort and shifts hands-on care responsibilities to the owner. This is not an ego trip. If you think a vet consult is needed prior to an IPTouch session go for it! Equus should be readied and returned to their enclosed area by their handler. Animals are not restrained during IPT. Animal movements during IPTouch sessions are a part of ‘Animal Communication’. Vets CANNOT guide IPTouch AMCPs to use medical management on animals. If so that vet will need to take animal care responsibilities and you may need direct supervision for this IPTouch session. Don’t BAD MOUTH the pet’s Dr. You look stupid and rude and may put the animal’s healthcare at risk. Use the Internet and continue your animal care studies!! Babbling about ‘energy’ and ‘gemstones’ to ‘heal’ animals is UNPROVEN and greatly diminishes this professions legitimacy. IPT will support the veterinarian board about concerns pertaining to ‘Out of Scope’ practice activities and revoke or suspend IPT certification rights until investigation has been completed. For community IPTouch businesses, review your IPT Policies & know your state’s animal care handling regulations.… Innovative Pet Therapy

15

Do Not IPTouch  Some IPTouches can be used all the time, but be careful &

respectful of the healing magic of Animal Physiology.

 Do not use hard pressure.  Do not stop watching animals for feedback information.  Do not IPTouch fast or in a rush. Animals sense this and

will not enjoy IPTouch.

 Do not work in noise, as this may activate the Sympathetic

response and creates tension patterns. However music, ‘meowing’ and other family pets / members may actually be calming.

 Do not pull or over elongate extremities or tails.  Do not work directly on the spine or bones.

Innovative Pet Therapy

16

Conditions to Leave Alone without Veterinarian consult

 Vomiting/Diarrhea/Fever: The immune system is WORKING. IPTouch

may increase system circulation and spread an infection.

 Fungal skin irritations: You may irritate, spread, or catch this problem.  Inflamed arthritis: Due to pain and tissue injury, some IPTouch techniques

may further irritate surrounding joints and tissue.

 Tumors/cysts/swollen lymph nodes: Some techniques could cause

spreading and cause further system tissue damage.

 Fractures: Due to pain and the possibility of causing further joint and tissue

damage, do not move fractured areas.

 Acute infections: Do not interfere with or further activate the body’s own

wellness system.

Innovative Pet Therapy

17

 Acute cancers: Spreading and bone

fractures are possible.

Be IPT AWARE

 Pregnancy: (unless OK’d by your vet)

Could begin pre-labor.

 Following surgery: (unless OK’d by the

vet) Blood clots can form and should not be circulated towards the heart or through the system.

 Directly after a large meal: Let the

digestive blood flow work without outside stimulation, but some animals relax better with a snack during IPTouch.

 When animals DO NOT WANT

IPTOUCH: They will let you know!

 ‘Special’ Needs: Hearing, Visual,

Memory, Geriatric, Head Injury…

All By Itself

IPTouch Verbology All The Time Snaking: Once human-animal touch begins, your hands must always remain in contact. This allows the animal to know where you are. Gazurtal: (Turtle + Gazelle) Take time for each body part and pay attention to daily physical & emotional (personality) changes in the animal. Dog Breathe: Breathe together for a relaxing rhythm. Meowing: Hum a sound slowly and relax with your breathing. Lapdog: You must BOTH be in a comfortable position for the time together to be enjoyable and healthy.

Phantom Paw: Place your full hand anywhere on the animal and DON’T MOVE. IPTouch an area of discomfort or not. This touch can activate the PNS (calming response) for pain reduction and general relaxation. Fur Striping: Light, long feather-like stroking, always remaining in touch. This touch allows you to feel for areas of sensitivity that may need medical care. Animal Vibes: This activates the PNS for a healthy relaxation response and stronger immune system. Add POSITIONAL ELONGATION: As you feel the extremities and body begin to rock with a relaxed rhythm, help legs, tail, trunk, head (all joints) move and elongate.

Innovative Pet Therapy

20

IPTouch Verbology Pay Attention Petter’s Press: This touch will enhance circulation and relieve deeper areas of tension. Pet Connector: For healthy movement, balance, and circulation, the fascia needs to move freely. Bear Squeeze: A mixture of Fur Striping and Petter’s Press with a treat on top. Drummers Howl: Muscular relaxation and improved circulation.

IPTouch Specials Tail Power: Opens and releases the entire body by relaxing the hips and low back. Newspaper: Full body Animal Vibes with trunk and extremity movement ALL at the same time. Lying Lizard: Hugging, Lapdog, and Animal Vibes all in one.

IPTouch Functional Terminology

Innovative Pet Therapy

22

Functional Terminology  Contraindications: When NOT to IPTouch. This is one of the most

important awareness goals of the IPTouch AMCP as this knowledge will truly guide animals to wellness and safety.

 Animal Anatomical Position: Animal position requires their permission and

comfort during IPTouch.

 Tension Patterns: Emotional or physical stress will cause physical holding

patterns. The change in circulation and movement creates a dis-ease. Changing tension patterns is the first step in IPTouch.

 ‘Coupling’: Animals may disassociate a part of their body when another is

symptomatic of a dis-ease pattern. This facilitates proprioceptive compensation and eventually fatigues the full body.

 The Peripheral Nervous System is made up of the Somatic (voluntary

movement) and Autonomic (involuntary movement) Nervous Systems. The Autonomic Nervous System governs two areas that IPTouch can greatly affect the Sympathetic (SNS) and Parasympathetic Nervous Systems (PNS). Innovative Pet Therapy

23

Functional Terminology 

Gate Theory: Sensation information from the CNS information center can be controlled with touch. For example, vibration beats discomfort to the brain because pain travels on a slower nerve fiber than vibration, pressure, or temperature.

Connective Tissue: Fascial tissue supports the structures of the animal’s body. Tension patterns could constrict oxygenated blood flow and may facilitate this tissue to stick. This could decrease movement comfort.

Dis-Ease (Lack of Ease): Stress may cause tension patterns, which could be a precursor to illness. Stress can change metabolism, digestion, hormones, blood flow, mental state, and other body functions. IPTouch does not use the word disease (without hyphen) as this refers to a diagnostic pathology. IPTouch does not diagnose. ( Found in IPT Policy Guidelines)

Inflammatory Process: This is the first response to the healing mechanism, however, if continued, tissue damage will occur and chronic pain and injury will result. Inflammation consists of three phases:  Inflammation: bacterial killing properties.  Repair: new tissue growth and decreased pain.  Remodeling: Alignment of scar tissue. Talk to this pet’s vet!

Innovative Pet Therapy

24

Functional Terminology  Tendon Reflex Response: Tight ligaments, dis-ease and rapid

movements will cause this reflex to jerk the extremity back to a perceived safe position. IPTouch does not use “range of motion” or “stretching” with animals. Through certain PE techniques, IPTouch will achieve Positional Elongation of limbs and skin with the animal’s comfort and permission.

 Proprioceptors: These are sensors located in tendons and muscles

that help prevent injury. The Golgi Apparatus monitors tendon lengthening speed and tolerance, and the Muscle Spindle senses movement in the muscle belly, protecting tissues from overelongating.

 Soft Tissue PNS Activation: Relaxation and softening of soft tissue

may facilitate oxygenated blood flow nutrition.

 Atrophy: Direct tissue trauma, decreased circulation, lack of use, and

poor nerve supply will all make muscles lose size and strength.

Innovative Pet Therapy

25

Functional Terminology  Sensory Receptors: Dis-ease, heat, pressure, and temperature are all

early warning signals to protect tissue. These sensors can be found under the skin, on bone coverings (periosteum), in intestines and elsewhere. The Sympathetic Nervous System (fight or flight) response to discomfort is one of the systems activated, affecting blood pressure, heart rate, and respiration.

 Plastic Tissue Elongation is a held sustained *PE. This will guide tissue

to having a longer holding pattern for flexibility goals. Healthy balance and PERMISSION are a must. This is best done 2 days before and 2 days after hard events. Consistency is the key. This will change body balance and mechanical dis-ease patterns.….45 seconds or longer. (used to facilitate your pet’s ability to sleep in full active elongation)

 Elastic *PE is a tissue warming elongation pattern that will guide

oxygenated blood to tissues. A great way to warm up and cool down after a sporting event or long walk. A short few second hold….15 - 30 second holds or dynamic PE. (used to decrease dis-ease compensation patterns before your pet’s walk) Innovative Pet Therapy

Time Line  God is believed to have created animals on the fifth day and man the day after to rule over them. Thanks Noah! Dinosaur IPTouch …absolutely.  Serpents, Eve, and the apple were not evil. One belief is that the Cosmic Serpent is the main facilitator in creation.  Medieval Europeans created the first animal classifications: Wild, Useful, Armed (horns), Unarmed.  Darwin and the Theory of Evolution: Survival is created through stress. Actually, a French naturalist named Lamarck first theorized this. Oddity survives. Memories  Animal-like Creatures: Sacred emblems representing a companion of a god or goddess. Bull: Poseidon (sea god) for unpredictable strength. Swan: Aphrodite (love goddess), Cat: Bastet (goddess of motherhood and fertility)  Prayer Altars: Bear drawings and antlers have been found in cave dwellings in Sweden, France, and Great Britain, dating back 70,000 years.  “Anima”: Possesses a life and spirit creating a link to all life forms.

Animal Symbol Born Belief  Druids believed that another level of existence, called the “Otherworld” exists. Animals guide humans between these worlds. The animals have maintained an instinctual connection to nature, while humans remove and separate themselves. Becoming one with universe will enhance all life. 

Innovative Pet Therapy

Animals bring direction, protection, as well as teach lessons missing in the memory of the human heart. Animal guidance will answer spiritual and emotional human questions. Animal directions change and open human awareness to new learning experiences. Animals represent the unconscious. Through insight to their images, human lives can become clearer and directed.

29

Animal Environments & Lifeforms 

Land: Humans find mammals easiest to bond with. Badger teaches humans to fight for spiritual beliefs. Bear represents a creature of dreams and answers for life’s harmony. Rabbit is quick thinking, and those who listen can stop worrying about the future.

Winged: Bat guides humans to avoid obstacles and harassing other humans. Ostrich directs spiritual truth. Pigeon shares peace and gentleness as its message.

Reptiles: Although humans tend to find these creatures difficult to bond with, life direction from them is greatly needed. Crocodile protects from dishonesty and poorly chosen paths. Frog shows new direction of life’s cycles. Turtle shares patience and Yin Yang of earth’s balance.

Aquatic: Water animals represent emotional dream states or waking moments. Octopus removes negative barriers and guides the cycle of life or death. Dolphin shares freedom and the rhythm of life.

Insects: Connected with the magical world, these creatures are full of guidance. Bee is fortunate and completes tasks. Spider is linked with the creation of life.

30

Otherworld Messengers  Crossover Messages: Occur within animal-human experiences, so animal paths may come as different directives even though the same animal is visiting.  Healers: Otter is medicinal. Potent medicine bags are made from Otter skin.  Guides or Teachers: Polar Bear shares physical and spiritual direction. Heron is the creator of environment and self-growth.  Protectors: Raven and Coyote protect Native Americans from monsters.  Familiars / Shape shifters: Form-changing spirits sent to connect and direct humans. Cat: protector, spirit seeing. Raven: resolving deep conflict. Snake: attitude changing for self growth. Wolf: spiritual teacher and guide. Innovative Pet Therapy

31

Symbolic Enrichment & Personal Growth  Power Animals: People are drawn to an animal in their

consciousness. A special bond with a power animal creates a totem guide (most favorite animal in the whole world).

 Totems or Familiars: Messengers and guides from the

“Otherworld.” They may come in physical form or though dreams and meditation. Each animal brings inspiration and guidance.

 Physical Beauty: Improves human respect for life forms other than

themselves.

 Inner Awareness: Through bonding with animals, human “self” is

brought closer to consciousness.

WOLF is my guide in the creation of IPT. Innovative Pet Therapy

32

Spirit Animals: Humans have nine spirit animals with them during the “Walk of Life.” Seven share and guide one’s talents, abilities, and emotions. The other two may be your power and dream state “Otherworld” messengers that walk by your side.

Power: We all feel a love for one particular animal. This animal may follow you even though visiting in different forms. Your spiritual growth and lifetime path will be sent though this animal. Mine is Wolf.

Meditation Game: By energizing the Medicine Cards: The Discovery of Power Throu gh the Ways of Animals , simply hold the cards and breathe. Let the card you draw find you. Pull the card that may call your name. Look at the card and realize the guiding message this animal is trying to convey at this time in your life.

Familiar Guide or “Otherworld” Totem: Whether an animal crosses your path while you are awake or asleep, the message is strong and direct.

Shadow Guide: Why does this animal create anxiety, fear, or confusion within you? Snake, Spider, and Roach are just a few famous shadow guides, yet have a very important place in the universe. Innovative Pet Therapy

Animal’s Spiritual Lessons Animal Practices  Yoga: Using animal postures help achieve physical and spiritual strength. Animals have physical and spiritual balance that flows through everything. Down Dog and Cobra poses enhance spinal awareness in flexion and extension movements. 

Kung Fu: This practice enhances the health of monks in monasteries. The movement patterns focus on forms that will incorporate the entire being emotionally, physically, and spiritually. Dragon: grace, beauty, and power. Tiger: powerful claws & strength. Leopard: quick, agile, speed. Snake: having internal power. Crane: with patience

Guidance  Astrology/Astronomy: Chinese Zodiac has six wild and six tame animals that control the earth’s sky, This is the “Cycle of 12” being the first to reach the bedside to say goodbye to dying Lord Buddha.  The Incas believed all animals have a twin star for earthly protection. 

Dreams: Whether you are awake or in a dream state, animal visits have the same strong message. Dreaming of wild animals is said to bring good business fortune.

Seasons: The Farmers Almanac monitors animal emotional and physical responses for seasonal changes.

Mythology: These stories grew during animal evolution and human imagination, usually during lengthy journeys from home. Centaur, Werewolf, Bigfoot, and the Abominable Snowman were derived sightings of animals in human-like form. Unicorn, Dragon, and the Sphinx had numerous animal parts, all creating great strength and diversity.

34

Ceremony of Thy Animal 

Religion: Sacred prayer is given to animals for food, health, strength and protection. In Western Africa, Leopard’s coat markings represent rainfall.

Dance: Ceremonial prayer for an animal deity strengthens protection and guidance. Invoking Jaguar keeps evil illness away and strengthens hunting ability.

Burials: Upon human death, Egyptians mummified animals for companionship and guidance to the “Otherworld.” Today large sites have been unearthed revealing thousands of animal parts as well as complete mummies of Baboon, Cat, and Bird.

Amulets: Lucky charms: Jaguar’s pelt and claws were used to cure human illness. Rabbit’s feet, monkey’s parts, otter’s skin, and elephant’s tusks are believed to have medicinal and health benefits.

Deity: Magical animals representing the all-powerful Creator of all Things. Human forms with animal heads share dual powers and intelligence. Centaurs carried the healing magic of art and music. The Satyr, half man and half goat, loved dance and music. Both of these deities are tricksters so the use of alcohol is not used when calling to them.

Innovative Pet Therapy

35

Sacred Animal Paths 

First Humans / Cro-Magnon: Prehistoric man showed animals in cave drawings as strong, fast and unsafe. The Clan of the Cave Bear

Celtic Druids: All life is circular. Four oldest animal guides: Stag represents independence and pride. Owl embodied wisdom and change. Eagle represents renewal and courage. Salmon showed inspiration and rejuvenation. Blackbird was the gatekeeper, inner calling. Seal: card of love. Cat represented protector of the house as well as evil creatures associated with underworld and death.

Chinese (I Ching: Book of Changes): Animals ruled over the four directions and four seasons. Black Tortoise: Winter and North. Blue Dragon: Spring and East. Vermillion Bird, Phoenix: Summer and South. White Tiger: Autumn and West.

Egyptians: Religious ceremonies surrounded Cat, Lion, Leopard and Sphinx. Notice these all have attributes of Cat.

Greek Astrology or Zodiac: Circle of living animals. Animals represent gods that take human shape for guidance.

Innovative Pet Therapy

36

Sacred Animal Paths 

Christianity: Animals guard the Tree of Life.

Buddhism: Through humanity and the belief that all life forms are interconnected, vows are taken to never take a single life—even flies must live! Vegetarianism is India’s path of ritual purification. Buddhists adapted these eating habits out of respect for all living things.

Native Americans: Animals and humans have the same inward elements. Bear is the closest, as it can stand and appear almost human. The medicine wheel shares astrological symbolism. Shamans believe humans and animals physically come together as one form. The medicine wheel represents the unending connection of the flow of energy life force among all living creatures.  Snow Goose, Otter, Wolf = Winter/Totem White Buffalo.  Hawk, Beaver, Deer = Spring/Totem Eagle.  Brown Bear, Salmon, Woodpecker = Summer/Totem Coyote.  Raven, Snake, Owl = Autumn/Totem Grizzly Bear 

Asian/Chinese: Guidance for Yin/Yang balance. An animal’s immortality was given according to its arrival to be with Lord Buddha. Rat, Cow, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Ram, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig. Cat was not invited because it was believed Rat would not be safe.

37

Symbolic Animal Events The Story  Myths: Egyptians and Chinese believe a “creator deity” came in an egg. The egg broke open and Bird and Snake began their species.  Gods and Goddesses: These beings have their own mythical powers, but their greatest guidance and strengths come from magical creatures that empower them through their physical and spiritual partnerships. Animals that would empower and keep company included Cat, Owl, Wolf and Bat. In medieval Scotland these animals accompanied witches.  Aesop’s Fairy Tales: Lessons and truisms shared using animal forms to gain human understanding and acceptance. Today  Mascot: “Pet” means beloved. Animals represent many talismanlike qualities used by schools and sporting teams. Emperors used Eagle and Lion to show their great strength.  State Symbols: Animals represent protection and strength.  Athletes: Missy Giove, pro mountain biker, rode with her deceased Piranha around her neck. Did she do well in the sport because of this amulet?  Cartoons & Movies: Animals that have been given human attributes, may desensitize children and adults to true animal needs and characteristics. Domestication  When tribal farmers saw herding animals eating their food source, they went about housing them and sharing their products beginning the first animal domestication. Sheep, Cow, and Goat now usually live in captivity as working animals. 

Dog guards are our friends and hunting comrades. Hunting together is one reason Dog is walked on the left today. The gun was held on the right. In wars, the sword was thrown over Horse from the left, and Horse mounting today continues this pattern. This creates physical imbalances in animals.

Travel, the first true connection with animals and the world, came about with the relationship of humans to Camel, Donkey, and Horse. Native Americans were lovingly connected with their horses.

Rainbow Bridge Preparation Meet some geriatric pets that use IPTouch comforting. This helped both maintain active abilities for eating posture and independent mobility comfort for the bathroom needs and changing position in bed. IPTouch is wonderful with your pet’s veterinarian medical care at this time in their life. However, this is also a time when pets may request to be left alone. PPa on the couch or in their stable bedding can now be added.

Rainbow Bridge 'Touch' is one of the strongest powers of wellbeing - whether life or the Rainbow Bridge is the next journey. However pets will communicate when ‘she’ needs to be alone: physically, mentally and spiritually. The IPTouch Rainbow Bridge goal is to help this pet pass through and leave their ailing physical form. Use IPTouch to activate the PNS system with Permission & Blocking approaches: Phantom Paw, Fur Striping and conversational toning called Meowing. include full body Animal Vibes if allowed. The ‘owner’ should be active by using hands-on involvement guided by IPTouch. Allow your hands to notice the breath and use this as your rhythm for all IPTouch. Music: Enya and other classical forms. Family: Invite other family pets to be with you, as they too will help the passing over. Medical Support: The vet can share sedatives or pain meds as needed? Assisted Euthanasia may be a realistic path. Home life should be peaceful. Potty needs and someone at home should be supportive through the entire day. If diapers are needed, use them. The final Rainbow goodbye: A local Pet Cemetery can also share burial and ceremonial support.

Temperature Awareness Ice

 This is a good way to comfort and relieve inflammation when cleared by

the pet's vet. Remember, more ice is not better.  Too much cold therapy can injure delicate skin tissue.  If used for long periods, ice will physiologically affect skin like heat. Vessels will dilate, continuing the inflammatory process. Heat  This is a good way to relax chronic tension and achiness when cleared by the pet’s vet.  Remember, burns and tissue desensitizing can occur with lengthy unsupervised use of heat. Remain present to check the animal’s reaction and skin tolerance. Discuss this with a vet when including it with IPTouch.

Land of the Different

Mammal: warm-blooded and feed their children with milk. • Marsupial: no placenta, birthing young that mature in a pouch on the mother's abdomen

Reptile: cold blooded and birth young by laying eggs, such as crocodiles. • Chelonians: body enclosed in a shell such as Turtle.

Bird: animals with wings and feathers. • Ratites are flightless birds, such as the Emu and Ostrich.

Amphibian: animals that live in the water and on land, such as the frog.

Insect: multi-legged creature with at least three body parts. • Invertebrate: no backbone

Innovative Pet Therapy

60

Eating 

Herbivores: plant eaters in two categories • Grazers eat grass and plants (Antelope, Camel). • Browsers eat branches and leaves (Deer, Moose).  Omnivores: plant & animal eaters such as Pig, Bears, Human.  Carnivores: meat eaters, such as Cat families and canines  Insectivores: They follow the same hunting patterns as carnivores. Armadillo, Hedgehog, and Shrew dine on insects, which are nutritious and have a high protein content. How to Chew  Masseter muscle: molar pressure is for plant grinding (herbivore).  Temporalis muscle: canine teeth tear meat (omnivore/carnivore).

What to Chew  Herbivores: tall molar teeth with flat surfaces, and some absent canines. Motion is side-to-side to soften fibrous plants. Beaver chew in this manner. Elephant teeth work on a conveyer belt throughout their lifespan, and they die from starvation at old age due to tooth loss.  Carnivores: sharp teeth tear flesh and flat back teeth crush bones. Motion is up and down, scissor-like, for cutting function. Jaws are curved for increased tearing pressure.  Omnivores: combination of flat molars and sharp canines. Polar Bear, due to indigenous life styles, have changed their eating habits for survival. Bird and Turtle do not have teeth.

Innovative Pet Therapy

61

Hearing  Auditory Bullae is the hearing anatomy. The size of the outside of the ear plays a role in magnifying sounds. 

Independent ear movement patterns are used for hunting and protection.

Communication: The outer ears and their position enable animals to “speak” to each other. Docking ears can give the wrong messages for some animals, like Dog in the dog park. Elephant hears and communicates with low-frequency tones that the human ear cannot pick up.

Temperature Control: The elephant ear is a portable air conditioner.

The Head

Head Decorations  Horns are permanent.  Antlers shed each year.  Tusks are displayed canines used for defense, determining age, sex distinction, mating rituals, communication, and more.

Eyes in the front, animals hunt Eyes on the side, animals hide.  

Distance Apart: hunting, defense, nightday use, movement pattern awareness. Prey Animal: eyes onside: Peripheral vision is for a large view around the body. Grazer: Eyes are far back, so when the head is down to eat, vision for predators continues. Browser: Eyes are positioned up and slightly more forward. Due to the high eye position on the head, a browser’s vision can protect against predators and prevent eye injury when eating stick material. Predators: Eyes forward in front: Binocular vision is for depth perception. Monkeys use this eye position for jumping from tree to tree. Night Vision: Large eye socket: The eye socket is larger for a bigger eyeball. Cat and Owl use this for depth awareness while hunting. Eyes& Breathing Holes on Top of Head: Animals that spend living time in water but breath air, such as the Dolphin and Crocodile.

Animal Xtras

Tails  Balance, Communication, Protection, Hunting, or Wind Rudder for Bird: When the Alligator swings its tail for hunting purposes the amount of lactic acid produced would most likely kill another animal.  Vertebra: Spinal attachment for Dog, Horse, Elephant.  Muscular: Prehensile or tail used as a helpful hand for Monkeys and Possum. Outside  Scales: Create movement for the Snake.  Feathers: It may not appear so from a distance, but what looks like Penguin “fur” is actually small, specialized feathering. Different layers of feathers have different jobs, such as color, insulation and flight.  Fur /Hair / Bristles (Pig): Characterize mammals. A specialized coating insulates bodies. Fur regenerates. Hair grows.  Shell: Bone with vascular supply. If cracked, it is treated like a fracture for Turtle and Armadillo.  Quills: barbed in Porcupine, non - barbed in Hedgehog… Innovative Pet Therapy

64

Tetrapods are four-footed animals. Front extremities attach to the scapular region, and back extremities attach to the pelvis.  Hind feet: Three walking patterns: Unguligrade: toe walkers like big herbivores. Elephant and Horse use “high heels.” Digitigrades: weight goes more towards the central foot like Cat and Dog. Plantigrade: uses the entire foot as in Humans and Bear.  Paws: Metacarpal, metatarsal and phalange bones. Front extremities consist of the humerus, ulna, and radius. Ungulates have a fused ulnaradius for standing weight stability. Hind extremities are formed by the femur, tibia, and fibula. The tibia and fibula may be fused for increased stability and weight-bearing.  Hooves: Front and back legs follow through with the same movements during a walk or run. Tissue under the hoof (frog) needs healthy circulation.

Mobility

Two Types of Claws Extended: fixed to the digit bone as in the omnivores. Retractable: sign of a carnivorous life. Tendons attach to the digit for movement, as in cats

Wings For balance, flying, hiding , warmth, expression, or mating rituals. The bone structure resembles an arm and hand, as in Bat and Chicken.  Flippers Once-removed arm/hand appendages. Dolphin still have finger bones in the arm like pectoral fins. The dorsal (top) fin helps the body dissipate heat for body temperature control. Tail flukes contain many blood vessels.

Innovative Pet Therapy

65

Alive Rest  Hibernation / Brumation / Dormancy / Time Migration : A ‘sleep’, so body metabolism does not require as much nutrition as when awake. Bear, Turtle, Hedgehog…  Nocturnal: For survival needs, nocturnal animals are wired for night activity. My Rat girls build condos at three a.m. as Porcupine & Rat…This will have much today with visual acuity permission patterns. Breathe  Rostrum is the area of smell found in front of the eye (orbit) bones. Pekinese have been bred with VERY short breathing apparatuses. Their survival depends on living with humans. Large crocodiles remain under water without a fresh breath for up to 24 hours. Racing Horse have large, open nostrils.

Pregnancy  Elephant: 22 months / 660 days  Horse: 11 months / 330 days  Cow: 9.5 / 285  Human: 9 / 275  Sheep: 4.5 / 144  Pig: 4 / 114  Dog: 2 / 61  Cat: 2 / 61  Rabbit: 1 / 31  Mouse: 3 wks / 20 days Babies  Mammals give birth and provide milk for their young. Dolphin have their babies backwards, tail first. Possum is the only marsupial in the U.S. although 150 species live in Australia.  Large wild animals such as Elephant have lengthy pregnancies so babies can birth standing and run from danger.  Animals with short life spans such as Mouse have many babies for life to continue on.

66

Survival Instincts Perfume  Scent is one of the most important territorial and communication animal attributes, from Dog to Bear to Human. Animals have or want a smell of distinction. Removing scent glands does not always change this fact, and Skunk and Ferret continue a strong inherited odor even when living in a house and sleeping on the couch. Indigenous  Due to animal rescue and reintegration programs, diets will change for survival due to human manipulation of animal habitats. Polar Bear is an omnivore, but is now almost exclusively a meat eater due to changing surroundings. Doctor Thyself  It is thought that animals “treat” themselves medicinally with plant sources for digestion, and antibiotics to kill parasites. 

“Anting” is a bird behavior that Jays and Hummingbirds use. They rub against Ant, which emits Formic Acid that kills parasites.

Animals Survive  Gloger’s Rule: Humid climates tend to have darker animals, possibly because of darker vegetation reflections.  Allen’s Rule: Animals in warmer climates tend to have longer arms, legs, tails…body extensions. Longer limbs radiate more body heat while shorter appendages conserve heat.  Bergmann's Rule: Animals living in cold climates are larger. This may be because larger bodies retain body heat better.

Animal Rules Animal food for thought as rules are made to be broken…

Dromedary (1 hump) camels are desert. Bactrine (2 hump) is cold mountain living.

Animals receive their first massage from their mothers at birth, which stimulates breathing and bonding. Humans see animals speaking through touch, smell, vision, and sound. We can analyze all day long but do we really know what is going on? Humans use tactile, olfactory, visual cues, and sounds for life... So do non-human animals. Observational Awareness is an AMCP tool used for safety and polite cooperation between animal-human species. Animal training and psychology is created by humans, labeled by humans, and taught by humans. Humans tend to give animals “human” attributes in order to come to a conclusion or analysis of their thoughts and behaviors. IPTouch says Good Luck! When an animal needs to convey a message, it usually does so with the mouth/teeth or feet and tail. Watch out for head butts, too. The AMCP NEEDS to keep the ego at bay and realize humans will NEVER really know animal conversation. IPTouch will use obvious human terminology to convey this program, but keep in mind that I, too, am only human.

Respect the Instinct 

Animal Perspectives: Do not speak our language. Live with human rules. Live with human schedules. “Owned” by humans. Memory of experiences. Learning abilities and individual intelligence. Unable to verbalize pain or illness as in good and bad days. Unconditional love vs. fear response vs. instinct. Caution when children are in home.

Interpreting Body Language: Neutral, alert, fearful, dominant, jealousy, submissive, playful, agitated, shy, anxious, greeting, bored, physically uncomfortable...

Postural Awareness, Communication and Safety: Ear position vs. cropping, body posture, vocal tones, pupil arrangements, fur texture, tail use vs. cropping, mouth/teeth use, facial expression…

Innovative Pet Therapy

70

Conversation From Animals 

 

Communication Abilities: Postural vs. verbal vs. tone; human tone and posture; ears, fur, posture, eye color and position; sign language vs. word usage; pet hearing ability; breed personality and intelligence; genetic characteristics; response tolerance to own species, strangers, handler, other species; sensory use: touch, sight, smell, sounds. Body Language: One must take into consideration surrounding circumstances. Such as ‘Feather Fluffing’. Does it communicate anxiety, hormonal fluxuations, illness or restfulness…? Mutual Respect: Guiding animals NOT to kick, bite or try to hurt the AMCP or others is OK! Communication Relationship: Patience, socializing ability, breed, individual intelligence, handicaps, age, children in home, anxiety levels, animal self-security, time together consistency, nutrition… Animal Needs: Health: physical-nutrition, exercise, grooming, wellness checkups, and “owner” preparedness. IPTouch: comfort, bonding, improved communication, special need considerations. Animal Responsibilities: guard, sporting, actor, friendship, couch potato, living in-out arrangements, domestic pet, exotic, babysitter

Dominance and Social Interaction  “Survival of the Fittest” applies to all life forms.  Stress is not a negative term. Stress in the case of survival means change for strength.  Animals naturally begin to manipulate their own species. This is done when the weakest and smallest may not get food, are hunted by carnivorous prey, or whose mothers allow ill newborns to pass on, thus not continuing the same weakness within the species. Hierarchy of Survival Within Families  Wolf: Leaders within group; Alpha (male) Beta (female)  Elephant: Strong female families with a matriarchal guide.  Monkey: Lead male and female. Children of the leaders treated like royalty, get the safest eating sites, best resting areas, etc.  Feral Cat: When hungry, cats, which are usually solitary animals, form group families for hunting and survival strategies. Environmental Stress for Survival  Stress creates change.  Change occurs with species malformation.  Through the stress of evolution, horses have longer, faster survival legs, and giraffes have a longer neck to reach food sources. Innovative Pet Therapy

Order : Creates cooperation. Decreases fighting over food. Designates resting areas for health & safety. Creates strength within species for birthing rights.

74

Instincts

Emperor Penguins can be 3 1/2 feet tall while the Little Blue is 16” & 2 1/2 pounds.

Closed Instincts: Cannot Be Changed?  Mating: Stress can greatly change mating habits. Pandas in captivity are difficult breeders. 

Breed-Genetics: Manipulation from an outside source (humans) can lead to physical and emotional animal health problems. Humans have manipulated dog sizes, shapes, temperaments and even health issues, yet all dogs come from Wolf genetics.

Sex: Rescue breeding is a strong concern of zoos and animal wildlife facilities. But “fixing” the birth rate in some animals is also a means of rescue, as in Dog, Cat, and Rabbit.

Age: Animals in rescue facilities and wildlife reserves are living longer lives. This is a form of human manipulation but assists the species with survival. Oddly, bird life spans tend to decrease when they live in captivity.

Imprinting Instincts (Open)  Some animals will form a special attachment to an individual of another species if they see them a short time after birth. Bird has a strong tendency to imprint. Goose and Penguin will bond with humans as well as with other animals not of their species. Innovative Pet Therapy

75

Instincts

Above is Bentley, adopted by IPT from Adopt-a-Bat. Due to other bully bats he had neurological ailments. Once given his own ‘condo’ health and happiness returned.

Open Instincts: Can They Change?  Indigenous: Animals that need their natural home changed to another location for survival. Polar Bear, Wolf, and Bird of Prey are sometimes relocated to protect the species.  Experience: Memory patterns in animals exist for survival, love and learning, just as in humans.  Nest and Dam Building: Animals always remember predisposed survival patterns, although non-native settings such as zoos may change these activities.  Surrounding Stimuli: Anxiety and stress will lead to neurological manifestations, agitation, changes in mating and eating habits, along with other dis-eases. This is why zoos are now more concerned with educational living areas than with animal entertainment.  Bonding Time: “Domestication” creates animals that depend on humans for our company and touch just as much as for nutrition and health issues. Classical music played to cows increases their milk.  Animal Care & Safety: Adopting new family members (no matter what species) without a wellness plan leads to animal-human relationship problems.  Communication: Animals and humans must share a common language of some sort for safe, peaceful communication.  Nutrition: Consult a veterinarian before changing animal diets, as there may be other heath issues to consider.  Physical Discomforts: Personalities, eating habits, and the ability to cooperate may change when animals don’t feel well. They have good and bad days, too.  Too Many: Having too many animals may lead to fights over hierarchy and lead to health issues that humans may not be able to afford.  Lifespan: Allow reality to be your guide, always striving for quality and not quantity. Death and dying counseling groups for pet owners are available. Innovative Pet Therapy

76

Animal Experts & Human Definitions  Human vs. Animal Philosophy: Humans tend to give animals human attributes to better explain their behaviors. 

Handler vs. Scientist vs. Veterinarian: Handlers may have a special bond with animals therefore making them the “expert” for that animal.

Breeders vs. “Owners”: Breeding overpopulated species is inhumane, but when saving a species, as in the wild, breeding is an important part of animal rescue. The word “owner” creates legal rights about what humans can do with animals. Society is now beginning to strongly monitor human care of animals.

Trainers and Pet Stores: Trainers are beginning to learn gentler methods of communication, while pet stores such as Petco and Petsmart assist with animal rescue through adoption, not breeding.

Animal Professionals

Animal Psychology  Animal Psychologists study animals in a clinical setting. They are concerned with the emotional well being of animals. 

Biologists, Ethology: study animal behavior by observing the grouping and response patterns of animals in their natural habitat. Studies show Dolphin brains actually become smaller when in captivity, possibly due to the fact that survival and hunting needs diminish. Maybe their brain is relaxing!

Innovative Pet Therapy

77

Human’s Perception

(De)Sensitize Humans to Animal’s World  Animals with Human Attributes: books, cartoons, perceptions usually begin during childhood.  Pets for Small Children: This is inappropriate. If an animal lives in a home with a small child, this is a time for learning and supervising to protector from rough handling.  Acting Animals: This can present unhealthy physical and emotional conditions for animals unless educational goals and loving conditions are present.  Educational Research: Helping species survive and prosper in a world where animals live in protected surroundings. Human Concept  “Owning”: The term “owner” creates legal flexibility. Humans do what they want with animals (with LOVE) when they are “owners.”  Domestication vs. Wild? Animals may seem “tame” when young, and yet may become “wild” when adults. Humans are the wildest predators on the planet. Parrot dominance appears as he who eats first.  Training/Cooperation/Friendship: Educational animals in captivity are not trained. They are exercised and mentally stimulated with physical “play” activity. Also ‘dog training classes’ are really for humans….these classes teach time together and Animal Communication skills FOR HUMANS due to language barriers. (Animals already know about this).  Animal Memories: Memory is used for survival and communication, as well as animal LOVE. Innovative Pet Therapy

Dakota IPT “Looks”

Session 1 Unsure, Past Memories: IPTouch may also need a walk or ‘cookie’ from the ‘owner’ or YOU to get started. Bring a stuffed animal for show and tell, be ready with homework, explain the importance of 3 – 5 visits.

Session 2 Polite Curiosity: IPTouch consistency helps ‘animal memory patterns’ develop. Also the ‘owner’ has begun to assist. IPTouch is guiding with a stuffed animal. During this time the pet may fake drinks of water, walk away and return, lay down somewhere else… Innovative Pet Therapy

Session 3 YES! IPTouch has begun to work! Pet ‘Anatomical Position’ will begin the change now.

Session 4 Done: How will you distinguish discomfort vs. NO? Consistency and Animal Communication will be your guides…Pets may begin to play, request outside… Moving away feels different . LISTEN!

Responses To IPT 

Dog: The full body rocks rhythmically, eyes close, dog allows positional changes easily, and body resembles a ‘noodle’. You have permission to IPTouch dis-ease or shy areas (like paws). Tail and hind end relax. “Quick jerk” response from legs diminishes with Positional Elongation. ‘Woody’ cold skin tension disappears and skin begins to move and warm. Dog comes to you and requests IPTouch.

Cat: Pupils relax, ear positioning equalizes, and you can IPTouch areas you were told never to touch on a cat. Cat lengthens body voluntarily. Verbal toning begins. Positional changes are relaxed and allowed. Eyes begin to close, tail becomes limp, and reflex responses diminish with touch (for example, hind end up).

Rat: Quiets for longer periods of time and welcomes increased physical IPTouches without a flight response. Allows healthy handling of feet, ears, and tail. Allows you to roll its body over in your hands and requests to be held.

Innovative Pet Therapy

81

Rabbit: Pupils relax, ear tension decreases, flight flinching responses diminish, and Rabbit independently lengthens its body during IPTouch as if stretching. You can IPTouch areas out of the Rabbit’s sight and touch the belly and hind end without a flight response. Rabbit welcomes paw touching, raises up on hind quarters and requests being held, pushing into your hands with IPTouch changes.

Bird: Eyes relax and the bird will allow IPTouch with its back turned to human. Mouthing response decreases and the Bird welcomes feet touching. Rolling position is allowed for belly IPTouch. You can spread wings with a relaxed response. More quiet “sitting on you” time and dozing.

Horse: Rolls side to side, eyes relax, licks lips, head and ears drop, and the full body rocks rhythmically. The tactile flight response becomes non-existent during IPTouch. The tail releases, ‘woody’ low back tension diminishes, legs release with joint rocking, weight shifts into IPTouch as if helping, and self stretching improves. Precaution: Horses should not be allowed to completely fall asleep while standing, and this could very well happen. Suspensory ligaments and Stay Apparatuses may need some reactivating stimulation! Ha! Innovative Pet Therapy

Responses to IPT

82

Monkey: Dozes off like a human baby. Shows improved response to captivity and sleep patterns become more comfortable. Biting and agitation decrease, appetite will correct, social behavior becomes more appropriate. Look at them. Yes, they have fingerprints and thumbs and eyelashes. They smile and wrinkle their foreheads. Then they grow up and realize, just like human teenagers, they do not want to live at home. They become strong and begin to have their own opinions. They want to make their own decisions. Do not own this life form unless fully prepared. Slavery is illegal.

Pig: Decreased “wild” verbalizing. Decreased flight response or protective aggression when a friendly stranger approaches. Pig requests IPTouches to specific body parts and socializes with other species more readily. The desires for training and human communication improve and household dominance traits become more balanced. There is improved physical endurance from general body and joint comfort. You will be allowed to IPTouch while leaning over the pig’s body.

Dolphin: Positions itself for IPTouch. Eyes close under water. Bathroom habits are obvious due to relaxation response. Positions are lengthier without positive reinforcement. You will notice increased passive muscle activation vs. in-water active muscular buoyancy needs. With Positional Elongation, fins move easily in all anatomical directions. Innovative Pet Therapy

Responses to IPT

Responses to IPT  Goat: Wags tail, hugs, and smiles. Other family goats ask to join in. Human

realizes sharing a home with a goat may be the way to go.

 Human Giving IPTouch: Deeper awareness and mutual respect for other

life forms in the world emerge. Dominant behavior over other animals diminishes and becomes unimportant. The human connects with animals as they become communicating partners, and the human does not want anything in return from animals during IPTouch time. The human never again thinks or says, “This is a dumb animal” because the human’s own intelligence is raised. You are now open to animal communication.

Add to this list Ferret, iguana, snake, turtle, llama, skunk, bat... Think before you bring ANY life form into your home. Are you ready to be a “parent”? Innovative Pet Therapy

Space Tolerance

Social Reactions  Body language is a conversational component in the animal world.  Stomping or lifting extremities, nipping, mouthing, head tossing or turning, body swinging away or towards AMCP, whites of eyes showing or eyes half closed, ears back or forward or moving independently, tail swishing or tucked... Considerations  Hearing  Visual  Memory  Physical dis-ease Innovative Pet Therapy

86

Safety for ALL is a MUST 

If you feel unsafe in any situation, do not remain in close proximity to the animal.

You may not be able to physically IPTouch an animal. Give clear homework and IPTouch guidance to the human handlers and bring a stuffed animal to give demonstrations. Carnivore adults may be more ‘reactive’ than Herbivores.

Can cause Communication Tension Patterns: Jewelry, as it can change sensory information between animals and humans. No hanging items that can be mouthed, pulled, and then swallowed. Sunglasses should be removed to enhance eye communication and bonding. Perfumes may be an agitant and can call bees and flies! Long colorful finger nails are a no no… Long colorful finger nails..NO…

Photographs & Videos will assist the IPTouch memory, help formulate IPTouch goals, and further awareness of the pet needs. A camera flash may startle flighty or visually impaired animals, so think before you click. A zoom lens is strongly suggested. Are you safe, is the animal peaceful?

Troubleshoot IPTouch C.A.R.E.: What about exercise, snacks with handler permission during IPTouch, bathroom, medical care prior to IPTouch...Think about the individual needs of this pet. Innovative Pet Therapy

 Tolerance & Weather work together…wind,

lighting, thunder humans can’t hear, static changes in the atmosphere…

 If YOUR safety concerns turn into Fear &

Animal Emotional Tolerances

Over-cautiousness, animals will feel your discomfort and IPTouch will not be effective. The response will be an anxious animal that needs IPTouch.

 Large Animal Safety: Wear proper footwear.

Make sure they can see you or know where you are. Flies bite; fly spray is OK. Take cautions against head butting and tail swinging. If your back is turned and you get nipped or the animal steps on you, it’s your fault.

 Don’t Overreact! Animals have a mouth to

communicate with. They may gently mouth you to ask you to stop or change your approach. DO NOT REPRIMAND at this time. You are in their space. Innovative Pet Therapy

88

Balance: understand it and respect it. NEVER position an animal without asking first! The IPT AMCP will stand or sit as needed, based on individual strengths & awareness of animal positional changes. Hoof and nail care is a time for 3 legged permission. Is Parrot able to balance & eat using each leg?

Bedding: Animals such as Rabbit, Cat, and Ferret may request IPTouch to begin in their “safe” place. Is the pet allowed on furniture? Therapeutic beds with body support for older pets are as important for them as they are for you. Farrowing Pads are rigid heating pads for outside living Pigs & can also be used for pet Tortoises. Be Aware: Bird & Snake may be territorial of their living space. How do you ask permission to begin an IPT session?

Standing/Walking: Some animals may need to move during IPTouch. Ferret, Rat, and Cat may need you to walk during the Session. Use Animal Vibes and Positional Elongation with the assistance of gravity.

Animal Stance: facing toward or away from the IPTouch human affects safety& permission comfort. Some animals like to begin facing you. Always be aware of the animal’s field of vision and stay inside it. Bird has a ‘blind’ spot directly in front. Innovative Pet Therapy

IPTouch Conversations Look For This! The Sigh, Eyes Closing & Self Stretching When you touch, pet or hug an animal with your bare hands, notice areas of the body where skin seems to almost stick to their muscles. This is fascial tightness, in which dis-ease patterns occur. By watching animal activities, movement patterns, & physical and facial expressions, IPTouch will begin with safety, awareness, and animal permission. Awareness of visual anatomy is the first physical contact between animals and humans. Use your knowledge of anatomical signals before beginning IPTouch to set goals. Animal also NEED to observe YOU to gain awareness of shared emotional responses. Innovative Pet Therapy

Quick Observational Assessment  1st Let Animal Observe & Greet YOU…  When you meet the animal is it shy, friendly,

animal’s head up or down, tail centered, toes in or out?

 Can the animal stand with its legs evenly

spaced?

Georgia's eyes show signs of Tension Patterned stress as does  Think center of gravity (COG) for improved her posture. After just 2 sessions of balance. Look Of Love

 Hair, Fur, Feathers, Scales: Shiny, dull bald areas, brittle, dull color etc. This is the first area to show signs of stress.  Eye Distance: Determines visual safety that can manifest into flight or relaxation.  Nostril Size: Breathing tolerance for running, endurance, and heat/cold tolerance.  Mouth Length: Equipment tolerance, tactile information.  Head Size: Balance for neck, back, full body comfort.  Ear Position: Attention and hearing ability can cause flighty or relaxed behavior.  Legs: Standing and weight shift patterns.  Leg Joints: Bone length and angle for physical comfort or job tolerances.  Back: Swayed vs. muscular.  Abdomen: Inline, hanging, rigid, bloated, relaxed.  Standing Weight Shift Consistency: four-legged compensation.  Hoof Size and Ground Position: balance and movement safety, full body comfort.  Birth Conformation: Joint angles and lengths, neck vs. head size, shoulder angle, eye distance.  Gait With Head Position: Head held high signals: possible back dis-ease. Head held low signals: possible neck dis-ease (or emotional dis-ease). Innovative Pet Therapy

SA: IPT Health Care Check Up (HCCU)

Write in IPTouch, POI bones, joints (motion), soft tissue (muscles) anatomy, goals & IPTouch ideas on the front & back of cards before laminating.

Try to assess through feel & observational communication bilaterally, therefore finding a comparison of both muscular size & emotional or physical tension. Use this are for observational and tactile IPTouch RECIPES. DO NOT apply this information without direct use of course anatomy text books. Add to this basic information. Innovative Pet Therapy

95

BODY COVERING: Think rainbow… light to dark colors. What do you see? This can also be an area that may show signs of dis-ease. Bald spots or dull coats can signal internal illness or stress. Fur Striping and Animal Vibes will do wonders for PNS goals and help you feel for new lumps and bumps. (Research fur, feather, scale anatomy & boney prominences). Problems here may indicate Dr. visit time. POI Bones: General prominences… Motion: Fluffing, appropriate seasonal shedding… Soft Tissue: Separate movement underneath. Goal: Equal, Colorized. Skin should move, feathers, hair, scales should be bright and aligned depending on age, health…hair vs. fur

Innovative Pet Therapy

96

HEAD: Should rotate and move with ease separate from the neck ( atlas-axis). POI Bones: Skull, Mandible, Atlas-Axis Motion: Chewing, Head rotation Soft Tissue: Temporalis, Masseter…carnivore or herbivore?? Goal: Tactile Tolerance

NOSE: How is the skin on the animal’s nose? Be careful of sunburn, but remember that animals will lick off sunscreens and balms. It is a myth that a wet nose signifies health. Are nostrils flaring, unequal…what do you see during breathing? POI Bones

MOUTH: Oral care is VERY important. Bacteria in the gums can go into the blood stream, nervous system, and organs, causing illness and even death. A pet that licks, growls, and nips excessively can be relaxed and balanced with Growler IPTouch. Guiding pets to be tolerant when IPTouching mouths is a good precursor for dental health care. Mouths are also used as ‘fingers’, temperature testers & gentle ‘steering wheels”….and kissers! Think herbivore, carnivore, insectivore, omnivore. What color are your pet’s lips?? POI Bones: Skull bones, Mandible Motion: Temporal Mandibular joint (TMJ) Soft Tissue: Lips, Masseter Goal: Soft cheeks, elongated lips Innovative Pet Therapy

99

EYES: The place of non conversational emotion for most. Pupil size, blinking or tearing, dull cloudy eyes, intolerance to light, and even fear of darkness can indicate an animal is having eye problems. Be aware of animal’s visual ability for safety and stress factors, as this will help them get along with others. POI Bones Motion Soft Tissue: eye lids Goal: Soft lids, clear, bright vision Picture: Painting Your Favorite Animals in pen, ink, & watercolor by Nice Innovative Pet Therapy

EARS: An animal’s balance and even personality can change with ear or hearing problems. Ears are attached to muscles that enable them to move and communicate. You can help animals “talk” to others of their kind more comfortably by using Pig Ear IPTouches. Notice odors or animal responses when seeing and touching inside and outside of their ears. Ear docking may be unnecessary amputation unless injury or infections are a problem. POI Bones: cartilage / skin attachment Motion Soft Tissue Goal: Tactile Tolerance

103

FRONT EXTREMITIES Shoulders, Elbows, Ankles, Paw Placement: Dis-ease with movement may indicate arthritis, a sprain, or not enough exercise. A high head position may also indicate front body tension, as in the neck and chest. If the animal’s hind end is achy, the front end will soon become fatigued. Walking Hooves and Pet Sandwich will reduce foot and body tension, just like a foot massage will do for humans. By the way, declawing is similar to removing the top finger bone of a human. SHOULDERS: Athletes or the elderly can have signs of disease in this area. Gentle FS, AV & PCL can help. Use a side lying or standing position, whatever the pet requests at the time. Armpit lumps may be signs of lymph node trouble needing medical attention. POI Bones: Scapula Motion: Scapular Rotation Soft Tissue Goal Apply this with Front Extremities & Trunk awareness. THORACIC / RIB AREA: Does this animal flinch when you touch its back? Animal Crossing and Rolling Fur Ball will relax intercostal muscles (small muscles between the ribs) and comfort breathing patterns. Are the mid-back and hind end areas symmetrical when standing or walking? Animal Crossing, Leash Remover, & Elephant Hugs can help soften & balance trunk muscles. POI Bones Motion Soft Tissue Goal

STOMACH / ABDOMEN: Stress, gulping food, lack of exercise, age, genetics, and nutritional changes can affect an animal’s digestive system. The belly muscles help support the back. Using Elephant Hugs can activate this muscle group. Relaxed stomach muscles also help the groin region relax, thus opening the hips. HIND EXTREMITIES: (Hips, Groin, Stifle, Ankles) Comfort in this area can aid an animal’s ability to sit, stand, and lie on its side comfortably. Just as in humans, when lying on the side with the legs crossing midline, the back rotates. This may aggravate a disease back pattern. Lumps in the groin can indicate lymph node trouble possibly needing medical care. The muscular areas in the hip and gluteals (butt) may welcome Bear Squeezes. TAIL: The tail is the end OR beginning of the spine. In most animals it is NOT cartilage, but small vertebral bones. Animal Vibes and Tail Power will relieve low back and full body tension. Tail docking is an unnecessary amputation unless an injury has occurred. Observe central positioning during walking standing & sitting. When a pet is lying down FS tail away from a tucked position. Tucking can increase postural changes in the pelvic, low back and hind legs.

works. Have Intent with your IPTouch communication…hands & conversation with pets must have purpose. If you miss a leg today, don’t worry, it will still be there tomorrow. Breathe, breathe, breathe. Animals pick the position and the sequence of IPTouch techniques most comfortable for their needs. Always begin and end IPTouches with flowing Fur Striping. This calms, warms, and desensitizes areas uncomfortable with touch. NO deep tissue. Animals do not understand this, and undue pressure will increase tension patterns, possibly creating an unsafe animal reaction. Positional Elongation will improve active movements & permission patterns. Meowing or Dog Breathing will help you and the animal focus together. Have water available before, during, and after IPTouch. Keeping both hands on & IPTouching the animal body bilaterally will allow the relaxation response within the animal to begin (if allowed). If the animal does not grant permission due to dis-ease, IPTouch the opposite side of the tension area (area of comfort), and you will see a carry over response that relaxes the actual side of tension. If the animal wants to be done, then you are done. Innovative Pet Therapy

144

3-5 Sessions Close Together  Clients should be told up front 3 to 5 session is the best IPT

permission recipe. 3 is a minimal magic number for animal minds and tissues to remember, relax, and for IPTouch to begin working! Your techniques will progress as the animal gives you permission. Activating long term loving memory is the key to IPTouch permission.

 The first 3- 5 IPT sessions should be within a 2 week time frame, for

animals with a new home, new owner, ‘hard’ past memories…This creates bonded permission and guides IPTouch towards a full analysis for IPT goals and owner homework information.

 Some animals respond to 15 minutes, 30 minutes, 1 hour….Some

animals will need 30 minutes or a few sessions for permission to begin. LISTEN! Owner Homework is VERY important.

 Each time you make an IPTouch visit, note the techniques used, time

tolerated, improvements, results, and revise your goals for this animal.

 Give humans homework to create IPT consistency. The carry over

touches both emotional and physical well-being of pets. IPTouch MUST be enjoyable & should include a loving caretaker. Innovative Pet Therapy

145

Before the First Session Pre-Visit Archiving: Begin this on the phone prior to the first meeting with the animal or share a free consultation visit. Keep track of owner name, phone, address, email, fax, visit dates, animal’s name, age, breed, species, veterinarian, shot dates, medical concerns, whether spayed/neutered, medications, past memories, nutrition, snacks, likes, dislikes, athletic activities, equipment used (bridles, bits, collars), comments, and anything else important to this animal’s wellness. Archive Format: Be open to format changes. Different animals may require different memory tools. Surroundings will require different formats for animal information. For example, consider the different analysis possibilities for animals at rescue reserves, zoos, with pet sitters, groomers, trainers, stables, vet offices, and other animal facilities. Quick Observational Assessment: When you meet the animal, is he/she shy, friendly, fearful, flighty…? Do they live with other animals or children? These can give you cues to tension patterns you might encounter. Pay attention to gait: when walking, is the animal’s head up or down, tail centered, toes in or out? Can the animal stand with four legs evenly spaced? Think center of gravity for improved balance. What is the handler-animal relationship? This is especially important with horse and rider, and attitudes of both. Innovative Pet Therapy

146

1st IPTouch Session Facilitate Permission IPTouch Comfort Flows: What type of flooring is present and does the animal have any difficulties with walking, running, sitting…? What type of bedding is used and is this animal allowed on furniture? This will affect the IPTouch position during the sessions. If necessary, bring supplies for the animal’s comfort and your own—a pad, towel, table, or stool to sit on. Create and remember this animal’s movement needs during the IPTouch time, always keeping safety concerns in mind. Think about how equipment and specialty activities may affect the animals comfort vs. discomfort from a saddle, bits, collars, leashes … Is their cage THEIR HOME SPACE. Do you need a protective towel, perch, glove to activate or request permission to begin IPTouch? What side of the cage does Snake eat on…..Do you need to use a stuffed animal and ‘show’ the owner IPTouch approaches? Mammal Respect Goes In All Directions: You MUST have some approach to let the animals know THEY DO NOT HAVE PERMISSION TO HURT YOU. You will respect them, but you must have the same in return. This aspect will make it easier to go into a home where the human is paying you for IPTouch, but the animal keeps walking away. You as the Animal Massage And Care Practitioner MUST find a way to communicate and take polite control of the situation. The pet will say thanks after IPTouch! If the animal will not allow you to touch, use a stuffed animal to demonstrate techniques as the owner IPTouches their pet. Who do you ask?...The ANIMAL…. Innovative Pet Therapy

147

2nd IPTouch Session REMEMBER…Three - Five Sessions Close Together: Animals have memory. I have found three visits to be the magic number for animal minds and tissues to remember, relax, and let IPTouch begin to work! The carry over touches both the animal’s emotional and physical well-being. This is why IPTouch MUST be enjoyable for animals. Your techniques will progress as the animal gives you permission. For comparison, consistency, and to further your own IPTouch goals, you must begin to know this animal’s needs. For humans and animals, activating the long term memory is the key to learning. Be Cost-Effective: If humans can’t afford the IPTouch process, the animal will not receive the healthy emotional and physical carryover of IPTouch consistency. Include the Humans: When “mom” or “dad” help, animal tension patterns ‘may’ decrease all the quicker. This also decreases liability due to the animal’s comfort with the bonded handler. Cooperation and permission happen faster. Animal comfort, AMCP safety, animal cooperation and understanding, as well as guiding the human handler should always be IPTouch goals. Example: Be Aware: Equestrian observation with the handler may indicate retraining the handler. Owners may be the tension creating factor. ‘ Spread the IPT Word” Client Homework: Give homework so the owner/handler will work with their pet between your visits. This is so important for IPTouch consistency, carry over, and results. It will also improve the owner/handler-animal bond and create opportunities for time together—a must when living with an animal. Homework also decreases dependency on IPTouch AMCPs and will be financially prudent for the animal’s human. Innovative Pet Therapy

148

Continued IPTouch Sessions…  Young animal with a great life: every 3 weeks, or once a month, share 

  

IPTouch for the pet’s owner to take over...play it by ear. Equus has an amazing 'holding' pattern for dis-ease removal....Homework time!! Geriatric Pets: Once a week or a consistent schedule with the owner incorporating specific IPTouch HOMEWORK. This will open the door for you to proceed more efficiently as well as help owners prepare for the Rainbow Bridge. If this animal is preparing for a sporting event hold IPT for 2-3 days prior, UNLESS you have been working consistently on her for about 3 months OR there is something that is DEFINITELY holding her up physically and has been cleared by a Vet. A day or two BEFORE the chiropractic Vet. This decreases Tension Patterns for improved cooperation both emotionally & physically. (Use this concept with the farrier or dog groomer as well). IPT will assist with a longer adjustment hold. Clear with Vet for a day or two AFTER adjustment as well. Rehab and Injury protocols are to be guided by a Vet. Be ready to share your IPT knowledge. Do you use your own IPT judgment? YES, YES…Which is exemplified by the usage of on and off seasonal training protocols for athletic animals. You FEEL what this animal needs...Each being an individual... Remember IPTouch is a concept of animal welfare, respect and wellbeing. CARE encompasses: bonding, exercise and owner responsibility. place of a veterinarian’s expertise. In fact humans and animals will share a heightened awareness and work towards prevention and early detection issues that may require veterinarian intervention. This program does not support herbal or nutritional supplementation without veterinarian consultation. I understand, I can, and I should be at all sessions for my own observational enjoyment. I understand a handler must assist for large animal IPT. (Equine) I do not hold IPT responsible for unforeseen changes I may think I notice with my animal. I understand my animal may need a short rest period following IPT due to emotional and physical comfort changes. I understand and I may request a written outline of the IPT activities shared with my pet.

Bonded handler continues IPTouch.  Human instruction must always be shared with the bonded caretaker, for this is the true working method of IPTouch. It takes trust and consistency for physical and emotional memory patterns to stabilize. Have the handler ready the animal before IPTouch and involve them during the IPTouch session.  Three is the magic number of visits for the animal to begin to trust and become comfortable with IPTouch. This is also to formulate IPTouch goal recipes. With consistency and handlers doing their homework, tension patterns will decrease.  Always get clearance from the owner or handler before feeding the animal you are with. Food can sometimes help relax tension patterns and allow the animal to be more comfortable . Milking animals drop their milk more easily during feeding time. Stomach On - Brain Off. However, the wrong treat can facilitate colic, diabetic sugar changes, or throw a pet off of their diet.  'Touch' is one of the strongest powers of wellbeing whether life or the Rainbow Bridge is the next journey. However, your pet will also communicate times when ‘she’ needs to be alone: physically, mentally and spiritually. The owner can play soft music during these times as this also alleviates tension patterns. Innovative Pet Therapy

IPT Techniques Permission PNS Activation neurological for permission

‘Permission’ Approaches: The goal is to decrease tensions patterns (either emotional or physical) by activation of the Parasympathetic Nervous System relaxation response. These are a must for rescued pets & wildlife that are unsure of ‘touch’ and close communication with strangers.

Innovative Pet Therapy

161

SNAKING (SNK)

How: Once human-animal touch begins, your hands must always remain in contact. This allows the pets to know where you are and will help them relax and begin to doze during your time together.

Snake never leaves the ground when moving

Used For: Throughout the entire IPT session for permission, PNS activation, animal awareness will improve safety for all. Be Aware: of the animal’s facial expressions, fascial tissue changes, ear positions, breathing patterns… Pay Attention: to your pressure and speed. If you relax and breathe, the animal will too. Start with short sessions and soon pets will be requesting certain body parts be IPTouched ALL DAY LONG!

Meet Eve , now retired from the Zumanity show. One of the gentlest, most inquisitive animals I have ever IPTouched.

Innovative Pet Therapy

162

Turtle & Gazelle

GAZURTAL (GTL)

How: Take time for each body part and allow fascial tissue to stretch , open and receive improved circulation.. …Yet be efficient ( Review concept of Plastic Tissue Elongation) Used For: IPTouch awareness, patience and FULL animal assessment, allows proper time for tension patterns to release and tissue to give hands-on permission. Pay Attention: to daily physical and emotional (personality) changes in the animal. • Full Body IPT sessions may not be in this animal’s schedule. • Sporting animals may need a warm up or cool down as well and these IPT sessions are short and right to the ‘body’ point. Innovative Pet Therapy

This pup was VERY excited when IPT class began. AND we were also outside with 6 other pets…cats, ferrets… 163

How: Breathe together for a relaxing rhythm. Breathe with sound so the animal can hear you and begin to focus with you.

DOG BREATHE (DB)

Used For: This will create a rhythm and relaxation response for you and animals you are close to. Be Aware: Breathe with the rhythm of your ‘IPTouch’. This will keep you, the human, aware of your pressure and speed for your IPTouch session. Extras Meowing (MW): Hum a sound slowly and relax with your breathing. This has the same affect as Dog Breathing out loud. Animals will focus and remain aware of you and your time together. Animal Stilling: Lightly blow towards the animal’s nostrils or facial–head area. This will create an improved focus on each other as well as share a learned bonded ‘smell’ together. Precautions: NOT to be used for reptiles/snakes or directly face to face. Innovative Pet Therapy

164

How: You must ALL be in a comfortable position for the time together to be enjoyable and healthy. • Also, animals should tolerate different positions. Example: Like a baby in your lap. • Animals should be able to release their body and fully relax.

LAPDOG (LPD)

Be Aware: Maybe this animal needs a pillow or a towel leg support. • Smaller animals like bunnies, rats, and snakes may feel more relaxed if IPTouched in a small box or their own bedding. Territorial precautions with Snake, Bird, Gerbil… • Some, as Ferret, Cat… may want movement with IPT… holding and walking (Full Body IPTouch AV) for example. Extra: Toweling Lapdog may quiet pets such as Parrot during ‘Bath IPTouch’. Innovative Pet Therapy

165

How: Place your full hand anywhere on the animal and DON’T MOVE.

PHANTOM PAW (PPa)

Used For: Calming flight response, decreasing muscle tension, readying the animal for deeper IPTouches, for wild - feral animals, shock (Dr’s clearance), following surgery (Dr’s clearance). Be Aware: Moving touches may make the animal anxious. Be sure to Snake with both hands and Dog Breathe or Meow. IPTouch an area of discomfort or not. This touch can activate the Parasympathetic Nervous System (calming response) for dis-ease reduction and general relaxation. Extra IPT Squeeze: smaller animals such as Feral Cat or Ferret become quiet when wrapped in a towel and held snuggly. DB with AV and begin PPa for spinal PE. Innovative Pet Therapy

166

How: Light, long feather-like stroking should remain with 'touch’. Used For: Activating PNS, anxiety, muscle warmup, body awareness, elderly, general discomfort, fear, defensiveness, beginning and finishing IPTouch after other IPTouches. This touch allows you to feel for areas of sensitivity that may need medical care. This touch readies the muscles and body systems for deeper IPTouches. The animal may be sensitive to your hands, attempting to nip or shy away. Be Aware: IPT FS groin, mouth, under tail, pad of paws, inside ear flaps…What reaction do you observe on your first, 2nd, 3rd….IPT session? You may need to use this as a homework touch for handlers so you as IPTouch can progress safer and quicker with a comfortable animal. Extra Growler: Fur Stripe in whisker direction. Touch lips, inside mouth, gums, teeth…This IPTouch helps with emotional calmness and readies animals for dental health. VERY important for Equus.

FUR STRIPING (FS)

Use FS to brush & groom pets as well

167

Use the water buoyancy to find AV rhythm with water animals. She request AV GL!

ANIMAL VIBES (AV) How: By using your full palm, gently rock and vibrate tissue over bony or tense areas. Used For: This IPTouch can be done all by itself. This IPTouch readies the body for deeper IPTouches & activates the Parasympathetic Nervous System for a healthy relaxation response. This also decreases opposite side Tension Patterns of the pet without rolling them over. Changing an animal’s positions may re-activate the sympathetic response. Extra Greyhound Love (GL): Vibrate extremities in all anatomical directions, one at a time, and with joint support. You should feel a relaxing release of the animal’s legs.

Full body AV in this position breakup Tension Patterns in the belly are as well

IPT Techniques ‘Blocking’ Myofascial Permission neurological tension pattern relaxation

'Blocking' Approaches are also for IPTouch permission. ‘Blocked’ fascia facilitates decreased active motion. This is used to facilitate passive & active Positional Elongation & comfortable body motion by facilitating skin to move! These are for pets that are having chronic (dis-ease) postural tension patterns during both active & passive activities.

Innovative Pet Therapy

170

PETTERS PRESS (PP) How: Sense skin and muscle moving separately. Use full hand contact to begin pushing the skin and underlying tissue including the rib thoracic region. Hold for 3-5+ seconds with a SLOW release…, slowly increasing the time. Mix this with the Leash Remover or Elephant Hug, RFB, ACr... Used For: This touch will enhance circulation and relieve deeper areas of tension for postural awareness, improved self stretching & positional changes during play time, sleeping, bathroom time and even snuggling with the pet owner! Be Aware: The depth will depend on this animal’s tolerance as well as the size of the area being IPTouched. DB,DB,DB…Connective tissue runs through and covers everything in the body—through-around-over muscles & around organs. For healthy movement, balance, and circulation, the fascia needs to move freely. Assist: Use a wall for large animal PP. This gives large animals a cue that this is not a movement request for them to DO but something for them to LEAN INTO and DB themselves. 4 PP IPT Approaches: Rolling Fur Ball, Finger Fur, Pet Sandwich, Animal Crossings…application of each depends on species and tension pattern permission. Innovative Pet Therapy

171

PP PET CONNECTORS

ROLLING FUR BALL (RFB) This is done on muscle-tissue areas. Gently lift without pinching thick tissue areas. Slowly roll and PE the skin. Notice: Boggy skin, Hydration, Facial Expressions. Releases ‘Woody Tension’ (skin VERY tight and HARD without movement. Usually found over the sacral region). Goal: Active atlas-axis & scapular motion.

FINGER FUR ( FF) preening, mutual grooming… Slip fingers under ‘skin covering’ and gently pull in the direction of growth. Hold 3-5 seconds before Fur Striping to the next area. Goal: Improved tail / sacrum & full body segmental motion. Innovative Pet Therapy

172

PP PET CONNECTORS ( PC) SA: Add your own photos of PS & ACr

PET SANDWICH (PS) Gently twist the skin over bony areas with a 3-5 second hold. A GREAT time to ‘talk’ as well! Goal: Improved ligament nutrition.

ANIMAL CROSSINGS (ACr)

Pass your hands back and forth in opposite directions around trunk and stomach areas. Create a tissue pulling – pushing motion through the entire rib and abdominal area. This enables breathing relaxation by improving fascial tissue mobility through rib and thoracic areas. Goal: Improved abdominal & trunk Aponeurosis movement. Innovative Pet Therapy

IPT Techniques ‘Gentling’ Nutrition orthopedic for motion

'Gentling' Approaches are wonderful for improvement of soft tissue nutrients for improved ACTIVE motion. This is VERY important for walks, play time, in and out of the car toleration, grooming needs, as well as potty and sleep positional changes…& hugging comfort!

Innovative Pet Therapy

175

How: Use the fleshy portion of thumb/palm area of both hands with a rhythmic ‘rub’ along the muscles of the back on either side of the spine. Opposite to Opposite hand motion works best. For larger animals use a pile of hay bales to stand on, bare back instruction to handler, or one sided ACr. FULL BODY…include shoulders, hips, neck… Used For: Great for trunk awareness and postural strengthening. Presporting warm up for increasing circulation to tissue for improved active motion. Flushing Lactic Acid from the muscle tissue after hard exercise prevents next day body dis-ease. Be Aware: You should be able to gently lift and RFB skin along the back, shoulders, hips…

LEASH REMOVER (LR) Use LR during standing, seated or on belly.  Standing add Elephant Hug, Animal Crossings.  Side lying add FS, for facilitation to hind leg PE extension.  Full body AV! Thoraco Lumbar fascial sheet should move.

Precautions: DO NOT push or work directly on the spine bones.

Innovative Pet Therapy

176

DRUMMERS HOWL (DH) How: Tap the tissue with cupped hands or finger tips. Dog Breathe and use a rhythm. Used For: Relaxation, stimulation by you creating an ‘internal’ vibration. Be Aware: Muscular areas are most comfortable with this technique. However for those with shells continue to think ‘anatomy & physiology’ Precautions: Over bony areas, injured or bruised areas, spine. Get ANIMAL PERMISSION…

Thoracic regions around rib areas should sound almost hollow. The shape of your hand will create a thump or a light slapping sound. The pet will tell you how to hold your hands. LISTEN.

Innovative Pet Therapy

177

How: Using the palm of the hands, or fingers to give gentle pulsing squeezes to tissue. Used For: Muscular areas, postural imbalance. (Minimal use) Be Aware: Pressure on soft tissue or over bones. Bruising will NOT occur as the animal will LET YOU KNOW!...Pay Attention & DB permission. Precautions: Cysts, tumors or hot spots that have not been cleared by the vet…use common sense and remain within your scope of training!

BEAR SQUEEZE (BSQ)

Extras Rump Itch(RI) Make slow “scratchy” movements with or against the fur growth slowly changing to pulsing BSQ. Pulsing Claw (PCL): Pulsing tissue ‘into’ body using the fleshy parts of your finger tips. Pre-IPT ‘Initiation Spots’ for muscular tension release. Innovative Pet Therapy

178

PIG EARS (PIG) How: Gently squeeze the ear base and make finger circles throughout the ear flap. Used For: This will relax the head, face, and neck muscles. Many acupressure points are believed to be in the ears. Be Aware: Ears should be soft and VERY mobile! This is one for the most neglected body areas for neck and jaw dis-ease.

With Growler

Innovative Pet Therapy

179

WALKING HOOVES (WH) How: Sandwich paws and begin to pulse or squeeze. GAZURTAL this one. PPa may be a good way to begin mixed with BSQ Used For: To desensitize “touch” hairs on paws and relax feet, walking and postural balance awareness to unload back – shoulder- neck… dis-ease due to walking compensation patterns… Be Aware: Toe, paw, hoof, claw, fin anatomy, upper leg attachments, reaction changes as this is done consistently. Notice temperature changes, improved tissue movement and more…This may be one of the most important homework techniques for ‘owners’ so IPTouch can continue on with progressive goals.

WH for parrot claws can stop toe restriction chewing! IT WORKS!

Extra Walking Armor: Gentle pulsed pressure to shelled pets, side to side. This facilities shell mobility from body tension and facilities PNS permission. Be Aware: Ground surface comfort. DB,DB… Innovative Pet Therapy

PE is mixed within the IPTouch recipe for active self stretching & physical elongation such as wing flapping, tail wagging, head shaking… Innovative Pet Therapy

182

POSITIONAL ELONGATION (PE) How: Mix this with AV, FS, & other IPTouch recipes to achieve PE. As you feel extremities and body begin to rock with a relaxed rhythm, guide extremities, tail, trunk, head to elongate. Used For: Health and PNS activation, poor memory patterns, anxiety, tension, disease, improves circulation, before, during and after other IPTouches. Be Aware: This is NOT ROM or stretching, as such technique concepts do not work well with Animal perspectives and IPTouch. Animal Vibes, Dog Breathing and Communication Rhythm are very important for this IPTouch PERMISSION.

Innovative Pet Therapy

183

How: Place the animal over your lap with its extremities hanging over your legs on either side. Full body AV with trunk and extremity PE ALL at the same time. Begin to slowly separate your knees back and fourth. DB,DB,DB…Gentle hugging and continued Animal Vibes will help relax the animal’s body.

NEWSPAPER (NSP)

Additions: use a pillow on your lap, keep knees apart to give a larger support, don’t separate knees quickly or too wide, remain close to the animal so it feels physically secure. Used For: Trunk elongation, full body relaxation, time together. Do not force an animal into this position. They may also guide you to help support their hind or front extremities during this IPTouch. Precautions: fear of position, animal too big…Use Elephant Hug for larger pets. Innovative Pet Therapy

184

PIGGY PUDDLE (PPd) How: The animal can be on their back or side. DB both hands under gluteal region. Add bilateral hip Greyhound Love. AV the full body to release back tension and relax the entire body. BSQ with PP to gluteal and hip regions. Follow the animal’s body rhythm. Used For: This IPTouch also releases back fascia for muscular relaxation. This position allows the weight of their body to create the pressure. Be Aware: Wild life & poor memory pattern permission. Using a cushioned area is best to facilitate this position. Precautions: Neck, spine or hip dis-ease, vestibular dis-ease. Do not actively choose this position without permission.

Innovative Pet Therapy

185

How: You, the human lie on your back. Gently help the animal onto your stomach/chest, with the animal also on its back. With a supportive hug, rock yourself with the animal back and forth. Hugging, Lapdog, and Animal Vibes all in one.

LYING LIZARD (LL)

Be Aware: This is an IPTouch that takes getting used to. Begin with short partial positioning and proceed as allowed. Used For: Back and abdominal muscle elongation, extremity relaxation, overly dominant, IPTouch time together. Precautions: Breathing difficulties, back and or neck problems, obesity, fear, animal too big? Innovative Pet Therapy

186

ELEPHANT HUG (EH) How: Interlace your fingers or a widely folded towel around the animal’s upper rib cage and work your way rhythmically up and down the trunk area. Add a slow lifting and releasing weight shift. Dog Breathe and release SLOWLY. During the lift the animal’s legs remain in contact with the ground. Used For: Thoracic – Ribs and breathing mobility improvement and spinal motion. Be Aware: This is a GREAT way to integrate the handler to help with an IPT session or as homework. Animals will actively assist by rounding their backs and self release, as their back dis-ease patterns decrease.

Extras SHELLING: Holding turtle shell in an X position. Gentle upward lift (DB) with gravity comfort and claws on ground awareness. Maintain conversational and visual permission patterns. Used for improved oxygenated nutrients and mobility to area hands cannot reach. Precautions: trapping of fingers under shell near extremities

Innovative Pet Therapy

187

How: Place palm on the tail attachment (sacrum area) and AV. At the same time begin to PE tail positions. Up, down, in small circles. Gentle pulling relaxes the back and hips.

TAIL POWER (TP)

Used For: Full body relaxation, low back ache, postural maintenance, feels good. Opens and releases the entire body. This needs to be done gently and relaxed with a Dog Breathe rhythm Pay Attention: To the animal’s ‘look’. Equus will begin to ‘drive’ by weight shifting forward. Release when the animal ‘tells’ you to…LISTEN…

Hands are soft & guiding. NOT Pulling.

Precautions: Elderly, inflamed arthritis, injury, non-anatomical, loose joints, animal is not in the mood… Innovative Pet Therapy

188

IPT OCTOPUS

 How: Begin with gentle

circular motions with mild FS, AV and PE. Try this on your self so you are aware of the pressure comfort but the pet WILL let you know.

 Used For: This is a

GREAT tool for flighty or feral animals that are not ready for “human contact”.

  

There are many small bones that make up the skull. Gentle FS to the head is relaxing. This touch will take the place of old fashioned petting. FS IPTouch to the extremities will reduce injury concerns as well as PNS an animal’s entire body. Never do deep work on the legs because the bones are so close to the surface. Gentle PE to wrist and ankles along with WH (paw) pulsing can relieve walking discomfort and may release acupressure points. Be gentle, as some animal toes have hair (touch receptors) that can make this area sensitive. Bones protect organs, act as levers for muscle movement and attachments, and house bone marrow needed for blood-cell formation. With decreased activity, bones actually become weaker and thinner. Bones ARE tissue. Wolf's Law: Bone will become healthier by adjusting to stress placed on it. The blood supply and collagen will become thicker, creating thicker bone mass. With added stress, take precautions with the area’s joint stability and inflammatory process. Bone is covered with periosteum, a tissue infused with nerves. This is one of the reasons injuries or hard pressure to bone causes great discomfort. Never do hard IPTouch to bony areas. Some tails are made up of small bones. Gentle passive IPT to the tail (you move it without the animal’s help) can be very relaxing to the hind end and low back. Innovative Pet Therapy

Muscle & Joint Joints  Joints are the areas where bones meet and attached muscles create movement.  During movement, the space inside the joint makes the “oil” of the body, called Synovial Fluid. Without movement and joint lubrication, simple activities become uncomfortable.  Ligaments are thick bands of connective tissue that support the joints. Ligaments also help (via nerve information) with joint position awareness. If the ligament is injured, the joint is at risk of injury.

Muscles  Muscles allow bones and joints to move (via nerve impulses) through a pulling motion.  Muscles pump blood, push food, and help keep the body warm.  Tendons connect muscle to bone. This is why healthy flexibility is important in preventing muscular injury.  Staying still for long periods can make muscles sore because of the lack of circulating oxygenated blood.  Too much exercise can create a lactic acid (waste product) buildup in the muscle tissue, causing muscular tenderness.  IPTouches using Fur Striping and Bear Squeezing motions can help flush tissue toxins.  There are three types of muscle tissue: Skeletal is the most common and moves the body. Smooth muscle covers internal organs. Cardiac muscle forms the heart.  Fascia is connective tissue attaching to everything. When the muscle and skin are stuck together by fascia, the result may be decreased movement, discomfort, and the risk of injury. The Aponeurosis is a sheet of connective tissue in the abdominal region. Thoraco-lumbar fascia runs along to back area. Innovative Pet Therapy

Nervous System 

This system is made up of many different information segments. The Central Nervous System (CNS) is made up of the brain and the spinal cord. This area receives all the information from other nervous system impulses and translates them for movement, learning ability, organ activity, and response to stimuli; just to name a few. The CNS regulates reflex or the “quick jerk” responses animals have to ligament tightness during quick stretches. Remember the proprioceptors.

Gate Theory: Sensation information from the CNS information center can be controlled with touch. For example, vibration beats discomfort to the brain because pain travels on a slower nerve fiber than vibration, pressure, or temperature.

The Peripheral Nervous System is made up of the Somatic (voluntary movement) and Autonomic (involuntary movement) Nervous Systems. The Autonomic Nervous System governs two areas that IPTouch can greatly affect the Sympathetic (SNS) and Parasympathetic Nervous Systems (PNS).

The SNS is the fight or flight system. The PNS helps balance the SNS by improving an animal’s ability to calm itself. By training the PNS to become more active, you will have a more peaceful and healthy animal through the relaxation response.

‘Coupling’: A neuromuscular dis-association of more than one body part working as a whole, which is the awareness of joining together or linking the physical self. Animals may disassociate a part of their body when another is symptomatic of a dis-ease pattern. This facilitates proprioceptive compensation and eventually fatigues the full body. Improving this awareness will help decrease compensation patterns. Innovative Pet Therapy

This is the home of animal emotions, understanding, giving, love, sadness, and memory. Animal brains understand pain and fear, as well as quiet with a hug.

Animals and humans need a language they can share. You can achieve this through IPTouch.

Oxygenated Blood Circulatory  This system has many functions. It fights foreign bacteria, works in partnership with the respiratory system for oxygen delivery to tissues, regulates the body’s temperature, balances fluids, and carries hormones to their place of work.  There are two sub-systems within the circulatory system: blood/vascular (cardiovascular) system and the lymphatic (defense) system. Cardiovascular System  This system consists of the heart and its vessels. For the body to live, blood needs the heart and the heart needs blood.  Arterial blood is oxygenated; venous blood is not. Arteries take blood away from the heart, veins bring blood to the heart, and capillaries help regulate the body’s temperature control.  The arterial pressure points are carotid (neck), brachial (armpit), femoral (hind legs), coronary (nourish the heart), and iliac (branch from the aorta and pelvis). The pulse is caused by the artery expanding when the heart pushes blood through the vessels.  Take time to listen and feel what an animal’s heartbeat and pulses feel like during IPTouch. Feel for pulses at the brachial artery (between armpit and elbow), femoral artery (hind leg above the knee region), digital artery (behind fetlock joint), middle caudal artery (tail attachment area), and facial artery (under jaw/mandible bone)

Oxygenated Blood Blood  Blood makes up about 6 – 8 percent of an animals’ weight. There are two types of blood cells: red and white.  Red blood cells carry the protein hemoglobin, which picks up oxygen from the lungs and transports it to the rest of the body. Once empty of oxygen, red blood cells carry the toxin carbon dioxide back to the lungs, where it will be exhaled from the body.  White blood cells fight infection and can rapidly multiply when needed to protect the body from invading organisms. White blood cells produce antibodies to fight infection or devour germs directly. Respiratory  The respiratory system provides oxygen to the body’s cells. This is why muscular comfort and movement efficiency in the trunk and sinus areas are important. During breathing, these areas help pass oxygen into the muscles and the rest of the body and remove the toxin carbon dioxide. A veterinarian visit may be indicated to rule out infection.  The respiratory system consists of the nose, pharynx, larynx, trachea, and lungs.  IPTouches to the face, head, and ear can relieve headaches and sinus complaints for animals. (Clear infection concerns with vet first.) Animal Crossing IPTouch can open tense chests and backs for more comfortable breathing patterns.  An animal’s ability to smell is very important to its physical and psychological senses.  Be aware of animal breathing patterns, as this can mean the difference between life and death. Emergencies that affect the respiratory system are head injuries, allergic reactions, poisoning, near-drowning, and smoke inhalation. Do you know what to do? Innovative Pet Therapy

Body Cleansers Skin-Hair-Fur-Scales-Feathers  These all protect animals from elements of life such as injury, temperature changes, water loss, and sun damage.  The skin is the largest organ of an animal’s body and contains two principle layers of protection.  Melanin pigment granules and blood capillaries close to the skin surface account for an animal’s skin color.  Whiskers and paw hairs are sensory hairs and can be ticklish and sensitive to touch.  Guard hairs are longer and stronger and usually carry an animal’s coat color. The under fur between the guard hairs provides insulation.  Finger Fur IPTouch can release fascia and help activate an animal’s relaxation response. Senses  The senses are vision, taste, smell, touch, hearing, and telepathic… Use your independent research to learn how important and complex these systems are. Innovative Pet Therapy

206

Body Cleansers Glands  Glands are used in most animals for defense or to attract the opposite sex and are located near the skin surface. They can be found around the eyes, anus, under hooves, on soles or palms, and on muzzles.  Glands enable sweating, temperature control, waste elimination, and produce earwax to protect the ear canal from insect entry and other irritants.  IPTouch will continue to ‘CARE’ for animals as a whole and direct these

glands to assist the rest of the system.

Lymphatic  This system is the body’s cleansing system, which drains waste products from tissue. The lymph recycles proteins and maintains fluid balance in the cardiovascular system. The immune system and the lymphatic system work as a team.  The lymph nodes, most easily felt, are under the armpits and in the groin and neck regions. When visiting a vet, ask her to show you how to palpate these areas. Look for them in your animal anatomy books.  Lymph nodes produce lymphocytes that destroy bacteria. Lymph swelling can mean the body is trying to rid itself of infection. IPTouch will give you this information early enough for a visit to the vet. DO NOT proceed with IPTouch if you feel swollen lymph nodes. Innovative Pet Therapy

207

Body Cleansers

Digestive  This is the body’s food processor and waste eliminator. The mouth, esophagus, stomach, large and small intestine, pancreas, and liver are all parts of the digestive system.  An animal’s nutritional intake has much to do with its health, comfort, and longevity. In fact, just as in humans, questionable nutrition, artificial coloring, and minimal vitamin and fiber input can influence dis-ease in an animal. There is a lot of information written about animal nutrition. Locating a vet well versed in this area is well worth the time and money.  Outer stomach temperature and tension are important indicators of whether an animal is relaxed or ill. A tight, rigid stomach can be a sign of poisoning, internal bleeding, or simply a stomachache or constipation. A fever will show as heat increases on the skin of the stomach, groin, or ears. Consult your vet if the animal’s stomach feels unusual.  Gentle IPTouch can help relieve gastritis and diarrhea (with vet clearance). If the animal is vomiting or has diarrhea, a fresh stool or vomit sample brought with you to the initial vet visit will expedite medical tests if needed. Use a very clean food bag or container.  IPTouch is one of the best ways to know animal norms. Use your animal anatomy books to find locations of the organs in the abdominal area, like the stomach(s), spleen, liver, kidney... Innovative Pet Therapy

208

Body’s Cleansers Endocrine  This is a system made up of glands that handle the body’s homeostasis, or the balance of an animal’s body functions and health. It is the body’s thermostat. The endocrine glands are the hypothalamus, pituitary, thyroid, parathyroid, pancreas, and adrenal.  The endocrine system regulates your animal’s hormones and sends them directly into the blood stream. Environment, animal stress levels, temperature changes, and even nutrition tell the endocrine system whether to increase or decrease hormone production. Exocrine  This system regulates and secretes saliva, sweat, mammary gland fluid, and pad suppleness. This system includes the stomach, mouth, and esophagus. Do animals sweat? Rabbits don’t. Urinary  This system excretes cellular waste. If this waste remains in an animal’s system, dis-ease can occur.  The color and amount of urine are important information your vet needs to know to determine whether the animal has healthy kidney functions. If you suspect animal illness, use a clean pie tin to collect a clean urine specimen for your vet (a fourth of a cup). This will expedite medical testing if needed.

IPTouch Reproduction

In this day and age, planned reproduction is unnecessary for most animals. There are MANY Dogs, Cats, and other animals available for adoption. “Papers” are for peeing on.

Spaying Dog is best before the female’s first heat and when the male is at least six months old. Spaying your male Dog as early as medically possible will give him a longer attention span (better cooperation goals) and will calm alpha tendencies within the household. He is also less likely to roam and be hit by a car, as statistics have proven.

IPTouch will help relax animals after surgery, help them recover from the anesthesia more quickly, and calm the general achiness of the procedure. It also helps you monitor incision sites that may have required suturing (with vet ‘s clearance)
