Group: 25 Inlet and exhaust system

Design and function

Turbocharger The turbocharger consists of an exhaust turbine section, bearing housing, compressor and a vacuum capsule. When exhaust gas flows into the turbine housing on its way out of the exhaust system, it causes the turbine wheel to move. The turbine wheel then drives the compressor turbine since it is installed on the same shaft. When the compressor turbine rotates, air is sucked in from the air filter, after which is compressed by the compressor turbine and is forced under pressure (charge pressure) into the cylinders of the engine, via an intercooler. The additional air allows the quantity of fuel injected to be increased, at the same time as combustion of the fuel becomes more efficient. The turbocharger is lubricated and cooled by the engine lubrication system. Oil is supplied and drained via external pipe connections. The turbine housing is provided with an external heat shield.
