What are these? They are the Lewis Chessmen. Where are they from? It says here that they were made in Norway. Really? How old are they? Let’s see. They are from 1150–1200 AD. That means they are at least 800 years old. I didn’t know that people played chess 800 years ago. Me neither. What do you think they are made of? They are white, so I don’t think it’s wood. It can’t be chalk? No, it says here in the brochure that they are made of walrus tusks and whale teeth. That makes sense. You know, I feel like I have seen them somewhere ... I think you have. Do you remember the movie Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone? Of course I do! What about it? Well, Harry Potter and Ron Weasley played a game of wizard chess using copies of these very pieces. Really? Now I am amazed. Let’s go and see the Sutton Hoo treasure.
