Alex (10): I make my bed every morning after breakfast, I make my own breakfast and packed lunch, I clean my room and the bathroom once a week. I also help an old lady who lives next door and do some shopping for her. I get £6 every week and I am saving the money to buy a computer. I only need about £150 more!

The house is quiet. Mum and dad are sleeping. Baby Ben is sleeping. Their dog Muffin is snoring. No cars or buses are passing in the street. The rooms are dark.

Josie is in the kitchen. She takes out a glass and opens the fridge.

“That’s strange,” she thinks. “No milk left.”

In fact, the fridge is all empty. No eggs, no cheese, no juice, no ham, no vegetables, no apples, no yoghurt, no potatoes, no leftovers from supper, no jelly or jam, no ketchup. And no milk.

Josie wants to call for her parents, but she doesn’t want to wake them up.

I took a photograph of the monster. It had a long neck and a thick body. The London Daily Mail newspaper published my photograph. Some people did not believe this was the monster.

I said to the monster: “Do not touch that man. Quick, go back!”

The monster obeyed me. I knew then that nobody would ever be hurt by the monster.

The UK is home to many mysteries and legends. We asked people to vote on the UK’s greatest mysteries. The story of the Loch Ness Monster came first. I think this is because people are fascinated by things we do not understand.

In 1975 people found out that Kenneth Wilson’s photograph of the monster was a hoax. It was made with a toy submarine and a carved monster’s head.

I hope there is good stuff to buy.

The people in Northern Ireland respected him, so there was no one to fight there. He looked across to Scotland which was only 13 miles away. There were giants there, too. The Scottish giants were also big and strong and liked to fight.

Finn wanted to fight him and show him who was best, so he started to build a path to Scotland. He took enormous rocks that were six-sided in shape and hammered 38 thousand of them together and made a path so that Angus could now walk to Northern Ireland.

Angus was quick and crossed to Northern Ireland on Finn’s new path. When Finn saw him coming, he was frightened. Irish giants were big, but Scottish giants were enormous. Angus was twice the size of Finn! Finn was really tired after building the path so he wanted to rest, not fight. He turned and ran home.

“Oona, what shall I do?” asked Finn. He told her his problem.

“Wrap this sheet around you and get into the bathtub. Suck your thumb and pretend to be a baby,” Oona told him.

Thump, thump, thump! That was angry Angus, pounding on the door.

“Where is Finn?” he roared. Oona invited him in and offered him some food. She quickly put some iron into some bread and gave it to Angus. When Angus chewed it, he broke several teeth.

“Finn must be tough if he can eat bread as hard as iron without breaking his teeth,” thought Angus.

“Let me show you Finn’s things,” said Oona. She pointed to a huge fir tree. “That’s his spear.” Next she pointed to a large block of oak. “That’s Finn’s shield.” Finally she pointed to Finn lying in the bathtub and sucking his thumb. “That’s our little baby in his cradle.”

Angus was terrified. “If that enormous baby is Finn’s baby, how big is Finn himself? I’d better get out of here before he comes back and fights me.” He ran back to Scotland as fast as

How to Recognise a Witch The Witches is a book written by the author Roald Dahl. The book is about a boy who lives with his Norwegian grandmother.

The boy’s grandmother tells him the story about the witches and how they disguise themselves as lovely ladies, when they secretly want to get rid of all the children in the world. Luckily, the boy and his grandmother know how to recognise these evil creatures, but can they get rid of them for good?

Before reading

Oliver Twist Oliver Twist is a book written by the famous British writer Charles Dickens (1812–1870). We meet Oliver as a young child.

He is an orphan and lives in a workhouse. The children are treated badly and they don’t get enough to eat. The children are desperate. One evening they decide that one of them should ask the terrible master for more food. No one had done this before, and now Oliver has been chosen to ask for more food.

The evening arrived; the soup was served, and the bowls were empty again in a few seconds. Oliver went up to the master, with his bowl in his hand. He felt very frightened, but also desperate with hunger.

“Please, sir, I want some more.”

The master was a fat, healthy man, but he turned very pale.

He looked at the little boy in front of him with amazement.

Nobody else spoke.

“What?” he asked at last, in a faint voice.

“Please, sir,” replied Oliver, “I want some more.”

The master hit him with the serving spoon, then seized Oliver’s arms and shouted for the manager. The manager came quickly, heard the dreadful news, and immediately ran to tell the board.

“He asked for more?” Mr Limbkins, the fattest board member, asked in horror. “Is this really true?”

“That boy will be hanged!” said another board member.

“You see if I’m not right.”

Oliver was led away to be locked up, and a reward was offered to anybody who would take him away and use him for work.

Part of Charles Dickens’s life was very like Oliver’s.

After many hardships, they both had a happy life in the end.

Dickens grew up in London. He enjoyed reading and making up stories with his brothers and sisters.

Sadly, his father lost all his money and was sent to prison because he could not pay his debts. At the age of 12, Charles had to work to help the family.

He worked all day in a dirty factory with other boys.

In those days, many children had to work.

Later, Charles’s father was given some money and he sent Charles back to school again. Charles became the most famous writer in England, but he never forgot what life was like when he was poor.

Charles Dickens’s book, Oliver Twist has been performed in theatres all over the world. It has also been filmed several times and made into musicals.

When King Uther died, Merlin was the only one who knew about Arthur. Merlin placed a mysterious stone with a huge sword sticking out of it in a churchyard in London. Nobody knew this was one of Merlin’s magical tricks. There was a message on the sword, saying that the person who pulled the sword from the stone was the rightful king of Britain. Many people tried to pull the sword out, but it was stuck, as if by magic.

Many years later, Kay was to fight in a tournament. Arthur had forgotten to bring Kay’s sword, so he went to look for another one. He found the sword in the stone and pulled it out easily. Arthur gave the sword to Kay, who noticed the message.

Everyone wanted to know who had pulled the sword out of the stone. In the beginning, no one believed that Arthur had done it. The sword was placed in the stone again and he had to pull it out one more time. Everyone was amazed. This is how Arthur became King of Britain.

He took Arthur to a magical lake where Merlin’s friend “the Lady of the Lake” lived under the water. She gave King Arthur a magical sword called “Excalibur”.

King Arthur lived in a palace called Camelot. He married a princess called Guinevere. As a wedding present, her father gave them a huge round table.

All the knights in the country wanted to become King Arthur’s soldiers. The bravest of them were allowed to sit at the round table. They were known as “the Knights of the Round Table”. Because the table was round, no one could sit at the end of the table and no one could say they were more important.

King Arthur never had a son. When he knew that he was going to die, he gave his sword “Excalibur” to Sir Bedivere, one of his knights. He told him to return the sword to the magical lake. Beach Cleanup Day Sometimes we see plastic bottles or sweet papers lying on the ground. These are some examples of everyday litter. Scientists say that people use more than one million plastic bags every minute! Many of these bags end up in places where they do not belong: in parks, on beaches or in the sea.

When plastic ends up in the ocean, it will last a very long time. It is dangerous to many sea animals. It kills a million birds every year, over 100 000 seals, turtles and whales and a huge number of fish. Norwegian scientists found a very sick whale with 30 plastic bags in its stomach off the island of Sotra.

The company Keep Norway Clean organises Beach Cleanup Day on 5 May each year. It is Norway’s biggest organised cleanup using volunteers. More people want to clean up every year.

Some families spend the day at the beach and bring rubber gloves and rolls of garbage bags so that they can collect the rubbish that they find. Many pupils also pick up rubbish from their school playground on a regular basis.

Everyone can take part: families, friends, neighbours, sports teams and schools.

Q: What is the first film about?

A: The first film is called Plastic is Forever. I asked myself the question: What happens when we throw away plastic?

My mom and I travelled across the USA to find the answer to this question.

Q: Tell us about the award that your first film won.

A: When I made Plastic is Forever, I never thought about entering it into a film festival. One of the people in the film told me to send it to the International Ocean Film Festival. It won the Environment Award. It also won Best Children’s Film at the International Wildlife Festival.

The Sutton Hoo Treasure The year was 1938. Mrs Pretty lived on a farm in England, in a place called Sutton Hoo. There were many mounds on her farm, and she thought there was gold inside them. She asked archaeologist Basil Brown to open them.

Basil worked and dug for one year. And then ...

Mrs Pretty: What has happened, Mr Brown? You look very excited!

Mr Brown: I have found it! I have found the grave.

Mrs Pretty: Fantastic! What is inside the mound?

Mr Brown: A man buried in a boat.

Mrs Pretty: In a boat, you say?

Mr Brown: Yes. Which means he must be an important person, maybe a king.

Mrs Pretty: How can you tell?

Mr Brown: There are lots of objects buried with him: weapons and different things made of gold and silver.

Mrs Pretty: I can’t believe it. Hidden treasure, right here on my farm! How old do you think it is?

Mr Brown: I found a beautiful helmet. It must be more than a thousand years old.

Mrs Pretty: Oh please, will you show it to me?

Mr Brown: I would like to, Mrs Pretty, but the helmet is in a very bad state. We have to keep it in a box so it doesn’t break. But you may see the silver plates!

One night at The Red Lion Inn, Captain Blood was in a bad mood.

Thomas Blood, an Irishman and Captain in the army, was drinking with his son, Holcroft. Also at their table were their two friends, Perrott and Hunt. Captain Blood was telling them about his enemy, King Charles.

“Why do you hate him so much, dad?” asked Holcroft.

“He took away my land in Ireland. I lost everything!” yelled Blood.

“Well, you should take something from him,” said Perrott with a smirk.

“Yes. You are right, Perrott. I will take the most precious thing he has!”

The others looked at Captain Blood. They could see a plan forming in his mind.

“Lads! We are going to steal the Crown Jewels!”

They clinked their jugs and cheered, “Hurray for Captain Blood!”

Talbot Edwards, the keeper of the Crown Jewels, had just finished his supper. He had sworn to protect the jewels with his life. So far, he had never been in danger.

“It’s a good life here in the Tower,” he said to his wife.

She smiled and carried his plate out into the kitchen.

Suddenly, there was a knock on the door.

“Who might that be?” Mr Edwards said to himself.

He opened the door and saw a priest and his wife. The priest had a long black cloak. The woman had a silk dress and a purple hat. They looked like very nice people.

“Good evening,” said the priest. “I am sorry to disturb you so late in the evening. Is it possible to look at the Crown Jewels tonight?”

“Yes, of course. The tickets are £1.50 each. Since you are a man of the church, you may get the tickets for one pound.”

“Thank you very much, good man,” said the priest.

Mr Edwards was very happy. He got one shilling for every visitor that came to see the Crown Jewels. What he didn’t know was that the priest was not really a priest. He was, in fact, Captain Blood in disguise!

But that night Blood was not there to steal the jewels.

He just wanted to check out the security.

Fooled by the Disguise Captain Blood and his friends laughed and cheered. He told them all about his visit to the Tower. He told them how Mr Edwards thought they were good friends. He told them how he was invited into Mr Edwards’ home.

The day had come. Blood and his friends were going to steal the Crown Jewels. Once more, he dressed up as a priest, and Mr Edwards welcomed him heartily.

“Come in, dear friend.”

“Thank you. How are your wife and son?” asked Blood.

“Fine, thank you for asking. Here to see the jewels again, are you?”

“Yes, I am. But do you really have to carry those pistols when we go into the vault?” Captain Blood asked carefully.

“I have sworn to protect the jewels ... But I can always trust a man of the church. You are right, priest. I will leave the pistols here on the door step.”

Talbot Edwards just made a terrible mistake. Blood’s son and friends jumped out of the shadows. They hit poor Edwards over the head and tied him up. They broke into the vault, and

filled their pockets with gold, diamonds, silver, rubies and sapphires.

Talbot Edwards woke up and screamed: “Treason! Murder!”

His son, the young Mr Edwards, heard his father’s screams and ran to the vault. The other guards heard the noise, and came running. Shots were fired. Blood and his gang could not get away. They were captured.

This happened in 1671. Do you know what happened to people who stole in 1671? They would be hanged. What did the King do? Did the King hang Captain Blood?

The answer is no. The King gave him a big piece of land in Ireland, like the one he lost. After the robbery, Captain Blood was both free and rich. Nobody knows why.

The Tomb of King Tut Howard Carter was an archaeologist. He had worked in the desert in Egypt for more than ten years. He was looking for the tomb of a king who ruled Egypt 3000 years ago. The King, or Pharaoh, died young. His name was Tutankhamen. A rich man called Lord Carnarvon was paying for the excavation of the tomb.

In November 1922, a telegram came to the Lord’s home in England. It was from Carter:

The Lord and his daughter travelled to Egypt as quickly as they could. When they arrived, Carter and his workers started to dig away the sand and rocks that hid the entrance.

They walked down the steps to the first door. They followed a passage to a second door. They opened it and Carter lit a candle to see what was inside.

“Do you see anything?” the Lord asked.

“Wonderful things ...” Carter whispered.

The room was filled with statues and figures of strange animals, gold-covered furniture, chairs, jewellery, chariots, oils, perfume, food and wine. It took him two months to clear the room and write down all the objects.

The most exciting object was the gold coffin with the mummy of King Tut himself. Carter was on the front page of newspapers all over the world.
