300 000 people came to California in the USA during the Gold Rush. The gold diggers in the California Gold Rush were called forty-niners.
The gold diggers used a pick, a pan, and a shovel to find gold. Rocks and gravel from the river were put into the pan. When they washed the rocks and gravel, the gold sank to the bottom, because gold is heavier than rocks.
A sluice led water away from the riverbed and made it easier to spot the gold. The men used denim work pants. Denim pants became popular and were the first edition of what we call jeans.
