GSP Iloilo - SCPB launches Eight Point Challenge, Activity kicks off with Challenge of Preparedness written by Sr. GS Leanna Grace L. Oro he Iloilo Girl Scout Council – Senior and Cadet Planning Board T launched on January 2021 the Eight-Point Challenge activities on various virtual platforms. The one-month-long event features different challenging activities which aim to adequately prepare Filipino girls and young women on how to face and cope with the changing times.

The first activity was the Challenge of Preparedness that was held on February. It highlights the meaning and importance of survival in different circumstances. It converts the Girl Scout Motto of "Be Prepared" into actual action not only at home, but also in school and the community to emphasize Baden Powell's teachings of being in a "state of readiness in mind and body" to do one's duty.

The activity’s program began with a heads-up, then an introduction of the girl-leaders, namely Sr. GS Leanna Grace Oro, Sr. GS Ianah Marie Basug, Cdt. GS Assyria Khassandra Landero, and Cdt. GS Angelica Rendaje. They prepared two different activities for the girls and this was announced through a pre-recorded, interactive Orientation Video that was posted on the GSP Iloilo Council’s YouTube Channel.

The first activity was entitled “Maggayak: Handa Ka Na Ba?”. The girls had to make a video or vlog about disaster preparedness and their alert responses when it occurs.. “Be Prepared: Build a Kit” was the second activity. It requires the preparation of an emergency kit consisting of things that a person or a family would need in times of emergency. The 197 girls who participated were monitored in the Facebook search box through the hashtags designated for the challenge: #SCPBILOgoesVirtual, #ChallengeOfPreparedness, #EightPointChallenge, and #GirlScoutsPH. The activity’s finale was a Digital Training on Emergency Preparedness in the New Normal with resource person, Yerma Anne Castro Ariston, a registered nurse and Unit Chief of Iloilo City Emergency Response of the Iloilo City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office.

All participants submitted an accomplishment form including their very excited feedbacks and constructive suggestions.

ne of the most important things in the world is FAMILY. In March of this year, the

Iloilo Girl Scout Council along with the Senior and Cadet Planning Board held the Challenge of Family Life Activities & Webinar, wherein girls were encouraged to bond, grow, and appreciate the time, stories, and memories that their family had.

Not only was it a challenge to teach the importance of familial ties, but it was also a challenge for girls to improve their social and listening skills through conversations or activities with their families. This event aims to train the girls to prepare and cope with challenging situations.

This pandemic calls for many health protocols including quarantine, thus shifting most activities online as a new normal even for scouting.

The online event was not only a new experience for the girls who joined but also for the evergreen ladies who made this challenge possible. Holly Dei Syree Fundal, Janelle Sargado, Iana Grace Montoya and Vivien Ysabelle Tañagras were the enthusiastic manangs who struggled through the new normal with determination to show that even in the face of opposition, the love you get from your family makes any dreary situation escapable. With the leadership skills and well laid-out plan that the girl-leaders prepared, the Challenge of Family Life Activities began.

On Saturday, March 13, 2021 the Challenge of Family Life began with a webinar about elements of family relationship, treasuring memories, expressing feelings of love to the family and many more related topics. This was to orient the girls in understanding the purpose of this challenge and to take those lessons into action, especially with the activities prepared.

The first activity was about the “Tree of Heritage”. Participants made pictures or videos showing the different characteristics of each family member.

The next activity was “Honor the Past, Imagine the Future''. The participants made artwork based on their discussions about family with special focus on how their grandparents lived.

The last activity was called “Priceless Moments”. The participants commemorated precious personal experiences with creative artworks.

The success of this month-long event is best captured in the outputs of the girls which they shared and posted on their personal Facebook accounts and the GSP Iloilo Council social media accounts.

The girl-leaders who spearheaded this activity are to be commended for successfully meeting the goals of creating strong familial ties and improving social skills. It is also very effective and has gained positive feedback through social media

This was emphasized by the learning facilitator, Francis Ray D. Subong, resource speaker for the digital training dubbed as “Flourishing and WellBeing Amidst the Pandemic”.

Subong pitched that each person’s current situation is best described as a VUCA world or a world with many unexpected changes due to Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, and Ambiguity.

Subong’s presentations, which included readings of international materials noted that these are factors which impact one's physical health, economic status, and mental health. These may cause waves of crises if not managed properly.

He also pointed out that physical and mental health is greatly affected by lack of sleep and increased use of digital gadgets. A longer screentime exposure is also linked to an increase in depression, anxiety and perceived attention problems.

Subong advised that “in this pandemic, we must be MAD, or Mindful, Attentive, and Discipline.”

The half-day digital training was attended by more than 500 girl scouts and titas.

The digital training project is a series of coping mechanism lectures conducted for the benefit of the girl scouts and adult members of GSP since it gives awareness on how to cope up with the current state of the world right now.

BUILDING YOUR FUTURE : FINANCIAL LITERACY WEBINAR

T he Iloilo Girl Scout Council hosted a Financial

Literacy Webinar entitled "Building Your Future" with Evelyn Josue as the resource speaker. This was done through Zoom and Facebook on October 24, 2020.

Tita Bingbing, as she is fondly called by girl scouts, is the Chairperson of the Associates Committee and a certified financial educator of the International Marketing Group. IMG is a distributor of financial services from its corporate partners advocating financial education as a marketing strategy.

The one-day webinar was empowering for the 5,000-strong Girl Scout attendees who was challenged by Tita Bingbing with these words: "If you want to be wealthy, don't let other people do it for you. Do it yourself."

She then tackled personal budgeting and shared steps to build a solid financial foundation stressing that "Control your present, the future is in your hands.” This was to emphasize that one's finances is not all about the money she may have right now but it is all about building one's future.

Tita Bingbing’s final advice was to "Commit to yourself, dream big, work for it so that in the future you will achieve."

IGSC Joins First Virtual VRSCC

Virtual Visayas Regional Senior and Cadet Conference written by Sr. GS Carlyn Claire Fullente

Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, the GSP - Visayas Region held its first-ever virtual Regional Senior and Cadet Conference via Zoom on February 13, 202. Under the theme of "Create Awareness for a Better World", it gathered 110 girls from the 14 councils of Visayas Region.

As pictured in this year's event-logo, the Senior and Cadet Girl Scouts come together like puzzle pieces to overcome and break barriers in order to raise awareness for a better world.

The Opening Ceremony was followed by sessions on mental health with Janette Jane Pasicaran, BA in Physcology, University of The Philippines - Cebu. She stressed on the importance of mental health validating the different emotions felt as a matter of selfawareness and self-love.

This was followed by a one-on-one session about starting a small business with the Co-Owner and Executive Manager of Fangasm Cebu,Cristina Grace Morgia. She emphasized the significance of starting a micro-enterprise to help support our needs because the country's economic status suffered a deep recession due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The last session was conducted by Cadet GS Stephanie Lorraine Ignas. She shared her expertise in graphics designing and video editing to help girls be more digital tech-savvy especially under the current situation.

The event concluded with a masquerade-themed acquaintance party online.

Participants creatively designed their masks and everyone enjoyed the group presentations showcasing talented performances.

The Iloilo Girl Scout actively participated in this event with the representation of eight Senior Girl Scouts, namely: Louise Antoinette Daquilanea, Jannah Marie Lyn Baldevieso, Holly Dei Syree Fundal, Gwyneth Amber Aguilos, Angelica Mae Tabul, Leanna Grace Oro, Carlyn Claire Fullente and Janelle Sargado.

Cadet Girl Scout Honey Parreño was also on the Working Committee as the Program Lead while Tita Akeena Rosalie Siladan gave the Inspirational Message during the Opening Program. Tita Hyacinth Bangero was the Guest Speaker during the Acquaintance Night.

VRSCC helps the participants to develop self-confidence and the ability to relate with Girl Scouts from other Councils; acquire basic knowledge and information regarding Financial Literacy, Mental Health, and Graphic Designing; become more aware and responsible individuals, and to share and discuss with peers and co-girls scouts on issues that greatly affect girls and young women.

The event motivated the girls to translate all the learnings and experiences they gained from this virtual event, into spreading awareness for a better world.

Nutrition Advocate Champions

2 Ilongga scouts chosen as GPN Advocacy Champions in the Philippines written by Sr. GS Milca Jane Cameseria

“Good nutrition helps every girl to thrive and reach her full potential.” - WAGGGS Cdt. GS Mary Divine de Villaluna and Sr. GS Milca Jane Cameseria were chosen early this year as the country’s Girl Powered Nutrition Program Advocacy Champions for the Visayas region.

The GPN advocacy campaign is initiated by the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) through its member organizations in Madagascar, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, and the Philippines where adolescent malnutrition cases amongst girls are very high. The campaign is supported by Nutrition International, a global organization dedicated to human development and progress by eradicating malnutrition.

As champions of the campaign, De Villaluna and Cameseria joined 24 other girls in the online training sessions to tackle the root causes of malnutrition, raise awareness about the social issues caused by malnutrition and help empower young girls towards realizing their dreams.

“That is why Nutrition International worked with girl guides and girl scouts from around the world to build the Girl Powered Nutrition program. A curriculum built by girls, for girls to give them the tools they need to make their own decisions, take control of their own lives and reach for their dreams,” cited Joel Spicer, President and CEO of Nutrition International in the company website.

The nutrition advocates serve for 1 year.

ILONGGA SCOUT SNATCH THE 2ND PLACE IN GLOBAL U-REPORT COMPETITION written by Cdt. GS Carmela Jade Cortez

Last January 19, 2021, Cadet Girl Scout Mary Divine de Villaluna was named as the 2nd Place winner of the Global U-Report Competition, where she was able to gather 102 girls and young women between ages 13-25 years old to join the campaign on giving the girls a chance to amplify their voices in regards to the issues in their society.

She was awarded with £100 gift voucher for the WAGGGS shop, a role on the WAGGGS U-Report Youth Steering Committee who creates the U-Report polls and a WAGGGS UReport t-shirt. Cdt. GS de Villaluna was also invited to become a U Report Global Ambassador.

“I felt so happy seeing the result as being granted such prizes and opening my door to more international opportunities “, de Villaluna’s answered when asked about her reaction upon receiving the award.

This U-Report Competition is a project of WAGGGS in partnership with UNICEF to give an online space for the girls and young women around the globe to voice out about the issues or concerns in their community and give them the opportunity to grow and become good leaders of the future.

“Together with my fellow U-Report Ambassador, Dorothy, we are currently planning to have a U-Report Team here in the Philippines. This is to expand our network so that we could reach more girls and young women to participate and engage with us in this project, “she added when asked about her future plans as a U-Report Ambassador.

OUTSTANDING DFA & OUTSTANDING TROOP LEADER written by Sr. GS Danielle Bautista and Sr. GS Leanna Grace Oro

“While there are many unsung heroines in Girl Scouting, efforts have been made to recognize the exemplary work of girls, leaders and troops. Excellence in Girl Scouting includes not just what was accomplished but how the performance was done and, more importantly, the effect on the whole person,” wrote Girl Scouts of the Philippines on their official webpage as an introduction to the National Awards that they give annually.

Last January 6, 2020, two leaders from the Iloilo Girl Scout Council were named National Outstanding Troop Leader 2020 and National Outstanding DFA 2020. These were Tita Ghia Joy Bermejo, troop leader of CPU Cadet Troop 23 and Tita Glenda Tanchuan, City Proper I, District Field Adviser, respectively.

The announcement was made through an E-mail sent to Regional Directors that was then forwarded to each awardees’ Council Executives. There were 3 awardees chosen for each award.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and travel is still restricted, they were awarded last Friday, May 7, 2021, 4:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m., virtually, via Zoom and Facebook Live. Cdt. GS Honey Parreño, also from the Iloilo Girl Scout Council, was one of the Masters of Ceremony of the said awarding.

Aside from the Certificate of Recognition, it was also stated during the virtual awarding ceremony that they will also receive an international travel grant in the amount of PHP 50,000 from the Josefa Llanes Memento Fund.

The awardees were determined and chosen through a set of nominations, endorsements, criterias, evaluations, selection procedures and forms.

This momentous event was commemorated on7th of January, 2021 with the theme: “Molded, On-the-Road, Refined, Equipped Iloilo Girl Scout Council: MORE Amidst Adversities”.

GSP Iloilo Council President Gudelia V. Coo, Membership Committee Chairperson, Dr. Xz B. Dignadice, and Maura I. Gellangarin, Chairperson of the Personnel Committee joined the Iloilo Council Staff in conducting a simple celebration to commemorate the event.

The rise of COVID-19 has affected us greatly from last year and we are still challenged as we live in this so-called "new normal". However, we still remain steadfast throughout this pandemic.

With the help of the girls, troop leaders, titas, and board members, we were able to adapt and rise against the challenges it brought us, and the GSP Iloilo Council is grateful for that.

"We hope we can still go on as an organization helping girls and young women achieve their dreams and become vigorous leaders for this country," said the Council President, as she expressed her gratitude for the 71st Anniversary of the council.

GSP Iloilo initiates charity sale to aid typhoon victims In relation to the typhoons that struck several regions of the Philippines and caused the people to lose not only a number of their belongings but also the lives of the individuals who are close to them, the

The online selling activity was by-lined as ”A GSP Iloilo Council Charity Sale for the victims of Typhoon Ulysses and Typhoon Rolly."

Tita Charisma Alagao, Associates Committee treasurer, explained that the activity was initiated in response to the needs of those afflicted by typhoons Ulysses and Rolly, which badly hit the country in the month of November.

“This is our simple way of helping when our kababayans are overwhelmed by such calamities,” she Iloilo Girl Scout Council’s Associates said while busy with tagging items and selling online thru Facebook Live.

Committee along with the Council Executive Staff, launched their take A call for donations of new or preof virtual marketing on December loved clothes, wardrobe accessories, 2020. housewares, toys and other stuff to be sold online was made prior to the event. It also attracted online buyers with a publication material bannering “Saan aabot ang P50 mo?”

Tita Joy de Leon, Council Board Treasurer also explained that the Iloilo GSP Council have sent boxes of emergency relief donations to GSP Councils in typhoon-ravaged areas.

“Aside from clothes, housewares and other things, the typhoon victims will also need money for their special personal needs like maintenance medicines, personal hygiene and rebuilding homes.

Whatever amount we can raise from the generous donation of goods to be sold will be sent also to the distressed families of girl scouts.”

Tita Claire Escuadra Laruan, Council Chief Executive also expressed gratitude not only to the people who donated goods and cash but also to the people who bought the items on sale.

The funds raised were coursed through GSP Councils of Isabela, Cagayan, Albay, and Catanduanes.

Tulong sa Pagbangon Relief Operation 2020 is a tough and remarkably difficult year. We battled many challenges, not only the pandemic that forces people all over the world to contend with a new normal but we also faced some calamities that affected many Filipino families. One of these calamities is Typhoon Rolly that happened on November 1, 2020 and Typhoon Ulysses which crossed the same track and made landfall on November 11, 2020.

November 12, 2020—Iloilo Girl Scout Council conducted a five days donation drive called “Donasyon Para sa Pagbangon” for the families affected by Typhoon Rolly and Typhoon Ulysses in Isabela, Cagayan, Albay and Catanduanes Girl Scout Council.

The donation drive is an initiative project of the Service Auxiliary Volunteers for Emergency and Relief (SAVER Team), SeniorCadet Planning Board (City and Province), and Cadet Girl Scouts Troop 1 & 17.. Many donors from different places donated canned

goods, noodles, sacks of rice, clothes, face masks and cash donations. Titas and girls from different schools also volunteer to repack the donations received.

November 21, 2020—The donations collected were sent to different councils that were badly hit by the typhoons. PassFast Cargo offered free delivery of the donations to the beneficiaries. The Iloilo Girl Scout Council is truly grateful to all the volunteers and kind donors that became part of the donation drive.

Together We Rise:

18-Day Campaign for the elimination of VAWG written by Cdt. GS Niella Jean Llado

The Iloilo Girl Scout Council joined the 18day campaign to end Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) in support of the government’s goal of protecting the human rights of women and girls and addressing all forms of gender-based violence as enshrined in the 1987 Constitution. By virtue of Republic Act 10398 or the Act declaring November 25 of every year as the National Consciousness Day for the Elimination of VAWC, government agencies are mandated to raise awareness on the problem of violence and the elimination of all forms of violence against women and girls.

The United Nations define VAW as “any act of gender-based violence that results in, or likely to result in, physical, sexual, or mental harm or suffering to women, including threats of such acts, coercion or arbitrary deprivation of liberty, whether occurring in public or private life.”

Violence and the threats of violence can be experienced by every woman of any age, skin color, gender, ethnicity, religion, disabilities, economic, and social status.

VAW is one of the country’s pervasive social problems. Various measures and mechanisms have been employed

and implemented to address it. One of these is an advocacy campaign that is observed annually from November 25 to December 12 as mandated by Proclamation 1172 s. 2006 or the so-called “18-Day Campaign to End VAW”.

This campaign aims to: Promote awareness on the forms of violence women and girls experience; Provides information on lawns protecting women and girls; Feature VAW-related services that people can access and avail; Promote the strengthening of a prevention and response system on VAW; and Gather public support for the campaign.

Together, let us continue to support this campaign. As for my fellow girls out there, let us empower ourselves. Speak out and encourage others to fight for their rights.

Balancing Academic Life and Social Life During the Pandemic written by Jr. GS Frenzylle Daine Lulyn Balogo We all know that it is hard to balance our academic and social life especially in this pandemic. Every one of us is having a hard time coping up with our studies and communicating with your friends, looking at what's happening on your Social Media accounts. So how do we balance our academic and social life?

Time Management. All we need to have is time management. We should do the most important things first then proceed to do the least important things. You can also have a routine. You schedule everything you need to do for the day and follow it.

In studying, use the ‘pomodoro technique’ so that you can focus on studying more.

(Pomodoro Technique: 25 minutes of studying, 5 minutes of rest) You should also read some topics in your book in advance so that you can learn a thing or two. After studying, you can sleep or do everything that you want.

After doing every single thing on the schedule, you can sleep, eat, breathe without worrying about anything, unless you forgot to do something.

Managing Mental Health During written by Jr. GS Rhoda Michelle Peregrino the Pandemic Many people have developed stress as a result of the pandemic, which may lead to depression, anxiety, and other problems. The causes included school pressure, separation from loved ones, illnesses, hardship, and other factors. We must support each other in times of trouble, so here are some tips on how to handle mental health during a pandemic.

To begin, create a balanced schedule. Sleep is essential, so make sure you have enough time to rest and enough time to complete your responsibilities. This will allow you to alleviate stress while still completing your duties. Second, eat healthy; during a pandemic, good health is highly important, so always ensure that you are consuming a well-balanced meal. Third, chat with others. Even if you don't see other people in person very much, you can always connect with them online. Don't be afraid to make friends online, but be careful not to spread too much information because it may be dangerous. Fourth, exercise will help reduce the risk of some diseases. Exercising also helps you maintain a healthy body weight.

Lastly, don't be afraid to tell someone you trust if you're experiencing stress, depression, or anxiety. Do not self-harm, seek assistance, or reach out to others.

Be strong and do what makes you happy, not what makes others happy. As Paul Coelho put it, “Stress, anxiety, and depression are caused when we are living to please others.” Do what you love, don't worry about what others think, just do what is right. Don't put too much pressure on yourself. Love and accept yourself throughout all times.

One of the most important problems facing this generation in today's world, or what most of us refer to as the present, is the lack of equality in the world.

Many people are suffering as a result of this; black people have been treated unfairly because of the color of their skin, Asians have been targeted because of the appearance of their eyes, there are more cases relevant to this issue which is a big deal. Imagine being treated unfairly by just the way you are.

One of the simplest ways you can help to solve this issue is to spread the word and treat others equally. These actions would contribute to a better and more peaceful world.

As far as we’ve progressed in society, racism has always been present and has gotten worse over the course of the years. To think that people would discriminate and shame other people just because they’re of a different color, have different eye shapes, with different cultural background, and even how their food smell is utterly stupid.

Last year, the Black Lives Matter movement made its mark across the world as the death of George Floyd and many others made people stand by each other to protest against the police brutality that black people experienced. Long before BLM started, black people have been discriminated far worse than today, without saying that the discrimination they experience today isn't bad too.

When the Covid-19 pandemic started, the racial discrimination against Asians have risen as people would blame them as if they were responsible for the virus, calling them names and racist remarks. And just recently, the death of the six Asian women who were attacked inside a spa has led to many other attacks on Asians or Asians in America, to be exact.

As for stereotypes of racists, a few examples are people thinking that Asians eat dogs and cats, that brown people smell, that black people are criminals and many more. Other racist things people do are pulling their eyes to imitate Asian eyes (fox-eye trend, taping the eyes back), people saying the N-word when they aren't black, calling Asians L and C (censored for reasons), doing cultural dances, mocking other people's accent, etc.

Doing these things are harmful to the people experiencing it and should not be the norm. I haven't experienced any sort of racism but as a person who has a platform to educate others about these things, I'll do my best to help out others and myself. If you don’t see any of this as a problem, you might be part of the problem.

"Protect Yourself While Also Protecting Others"

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected and is still affecting thousands of people.

And this caused a massive effect on each of us. It has rapidly affected our daily life and businesses. Many of us had suddenly been forced to adjust to a “new normal” way of life. Brave people survived and some lost their lives fighting against this deadly virus. To fight it, we needed to make sacrifices and develop a coping mindset.

The cases are still arising so we should do our own part to prevent it from winning over everything. Always observe proper health protocols and follow the advice provided by our local health authority are among the things that we could possibly do to lessen the spread.

Here are some health protocols to protect ourselves and others around us by knowing the facts and taking appropriate precautions: • Clean your hands often. Use soap and water, or an alcohol-based hand rub.

• Maintain a safe distance from anyone who is coughing or sneezing.

• Wear a mask when physical distancing is not possible.

• Don’t touch your eyes, nose, or mouth frequently especially when you haven't sanitized your hands.

• Cover your nose and mouth with your bent elbow or a tissue when you cough or sneeze.

• Stay at home if you feel unwell or obtain medical care right away.

• If you have a fever, cough, and difficulty breathing, immediately seek medical attention.

We should help each other because no one is safe until everyone is safe.

We’re all in this together.
