are currently holding their activities virtually due to the COVID 19 restrictions. Sessions, events and even camping were held online to be safe from the public virus. This proves that being an active scout does not have to be done face to face, but can be done if there is determination and attentiveness in one individual no matter what the situation she is in. This may not be our permanent situation but this is our current normal, we need to accept that this is the new

normal and not to be scared.

The Girl Scout organization is making sure that even if there were many complications from the outside world, there is always a way to make anything happen.

The organization is also holding different virtual events like, SPB election, Girl Scout week 2020, and Kamping sa Balay held by the Girl Scouts organization, may it be a Star, Twinkler, Junior, Senior or Cadet scouts, giving up was not in their vocabulary.

PROJECT BABAE.LAN Akeena Rosalie Siladan, a participant in the Juliette Low Seminar of WAGGGS last November 2019, launched Project Babae.lan to encourage girls to exercise leadership and to see themselves as leaders. Pronounced as Babaylan, someone who has the ability to mediate with the spirit world, has her own spirit guides, and is given gifts of healing, foretelling, and insight in the Philippines during the pre-colonial era.

The challenge was open to all Iloilo Council's star, junior, senior, and cadet girl scouts, as well as adult leaders. Since the Covid-19 virus has spread in our world, and there are newly implemented health guidelines to keep us healthy and away from the virus. The activity was done virtually with girls posting their tasks or challenges on Facebook, for monitoring purposes. The seven week long project started on June 2 until last week of July 2019

One on One with aBabae.lan What was your inspiration in conducting this project?

After JLS 2019, I was inspired to share my learnings about the WAGGGS Leadership model. I was so excited to implement the project since it was the first time for me to conduct sessions on leadership and I usually do advocacy work such as the FBM-ABC program. The project would also be very helpful for the girls to improve their leadership skills and practice them for their respective troops and community projects.

How did you feel about having this online project a success?

I really felt relieved and at the same time happy. I felt relieved because I did the project earlier so my volunteer work would not conflict with my professional work and master’s degree work. I also felt happy because I was able to pull off a virtual event back when organizing such activities were very nonexistent.

Though we had some setbacks, we managed to make the project a success. I couldn’t have done this without the core team with me. Shout out to these girls and titas (you know who you are)

Project Babae.lan, also known as the 100 girls implementation project, was established to provide 100 or more girls aged 12 and up with additional opportunities to exercise leadership and see themselves as leaders. The project also has the theme "Lead Out Loud," which reflects on gender obstacles to leadership (WAGGGS Leadership Model) and Sustainable Development Goal number 5 (gender equality).

Inside every Girl Scout, there’s a green fire that will continue burning despite whatever obstacle she may face in life. As the pandemic continues to lurk around, Girl Scouts all over the country remain set on participating as much as they can, despite the coronavirus. With their actions that not only inspire other girls, but allow the Girl Scout way to thrive within their deeds, they have helped in the conservation of our Promise and Law. Registered or not, the Girl Scout way lives on.

No one expected that the pandemic would get out of hand. People thought that this whole lockdown would be over in a week. Everyone expected that everything would get back to normal. Now, here we are, one year into lockdown. The restrictions in place have affected everything around us. To our work, education, and even leisure. One of the things that have changed tremendously is the Girl Scout experience.

Even in times of crisis, The Iloilo Girl Scout Council saw the pandemic as an opportunity. With the Council Board and many of its motivated girls, they carried on with the Girl Scout way, just virtually. With 23,813 registered girls, the IGSC remains as the council with the most number of registered girl scouts in the whole region of Visayas.

This number is already high as it is, but unbelievable as it may be, the pandemic has decreased the membership count of said council. In 2019, the total of registered members was 102,415. This circumstance is due to: first, there are girls who live in areas where the internet is considered a “once in a blue moon” privilege, which makes it difficult to spread information to them. Second, some do not own electronics or have any social media accounts. Third, traveling during this time is challenging because of the strict implementation of health protocols which leaves people with no choice but to stay inside their houses rather than go out. The list goes on and on, but to summarize: it is plainly because of the pandemic.

Every girl has to face the realization that we live in a time of change. With this in mind, many have questioned if this decrease in membership, makes it still an exciting or worth-it experience to join the organization. There have been concerns and questions, mostly from family members asking, “Is it still worth it to join the GSP?”’ With events like the Kamping sa Balay, Eight-Point Challenge, and Girl Scouts Week that still give girls the same experience, just within the safety of their homes, most girls would respond with a big “YES”. This “yes” is backed by the effective results and outputs of the many online events and activities our girls join.

Jr. GS Yelah Blythe Estrada stated, “I have difficulty with online meetings. I barely attend the meetings due to internet problems.”

Sr. GS Iana Grace Montoya said, “I hate power outages! One time I was in a virtual event, I was really enjoying the discussion then all of a sudden, a blackout! It was really unexpected, and such a mood killer.”

Both these girls have experienced the transitional phase from face-to-face events, to virtual ones. Just like many other girls, they too have difficulty with online activities.

Even with these experiences and struggles, they described membership amidst the pandemic with two words, “Inspiring and Thriving”. Though there are difficulties and challenges, the determination and efforts of the Iloilo Council and its girls have made Girl Scouting stronger than ever. With its many online events, it still gives girls the same opportunities for self-improvement and societal service.

Every year, all registered junior,senior and cadet girl scouts from all over Iloilo and Guimaras are gearing up with their bags and GSP uniforms to attend the annual encampment in Camp Pasica. But since World Health Organization declared a global pandemic in 2020due to Covid-19,mass gatherings including camping were prohibited .

As Camp Pasica cannot be used for scouting activities,Dingle municipal officials identified Camp Pasica of the Iloilo Girl Scout Council as a quarantine facility.The Camp located at the town's Brgy.Tanghawan was requested by Mayor Rufino Palabrica lll from the Iloilo Girl Scouts Council to be used in compliance with the Covid-19 health protocols as a holding area for concerned Dingle residents,especially their inbound Overseas Filipino Workers.

The activity centers were converted into rooms and divided into sections. Each room has a bed, table, electric fan and other basic comforts for locally stranded individuals or returning residents.

Medical practitioners monitor them for possible symptoms during the required 14 daysquarantine. Security of the camp area and now as a quarantine facility has always been provided by the barangay tanods and police personnel of Dingle.

Use of the campsite as a quarantine facility is only temporary and those who avail of the facility may roam around and enjoy the ornamental plants as well as trees that can provide relaxation to them, provided that they observe the proper health protocols of wearing masks and social distancing.

“We can do more and we will do more.” The year 2020 did not go easy

upon us all. We faced a lot of overwhelming changes that challenged our faith, courage, dedication, patience and hope. But these happenings in our world did not stop the scouting movement, especially the Iloilo Girl Scout Council.

Every year, the Iloilo Girl Scout Council conducts a Senior Cadet Planning Board election but the 2020 election was different due to the COVID 19 pandemic. On September 5, 2020, the Iloilo Girl Scouts had its first-ever virtual election via Zoom for the new SCPB officers with a different set of officers representing the Iloilo City and the Province of Iloilo.

Senior and Cadet Planning Board officers are the chosen scouts under Iloilo Girl Scout Council. to lead on event implementations and projects such as ,virtual camping ,tree planting,relief operations and more .

The SCPB officers were divided into two sets, the SCPB Province and SCPB City respectively.

On the 17th of October 2020, the new set of Officers were announced.

These sets of Officers were composed of 14 dedicated girls from the City, 14 brave girls from the province and with 2 supportive advisers.

A specific theme marked the days which were dubbed as the Environment Day, Faith Day, Family Day, Community Day, and Troop Leaders Day. The week ended with the Girl's Day.

How does it feel to lead the Girl Scout Week 2020 for the Iloilo Council?

Precious :I am glad and honored to be part of the Girl Scout Week Project Team 2020 for the Iloilo Council. I found myself enjoying the activity. From planning the activities to making pub mats, to the actual day, I am delighted to see the girls enjoying our activities.

Ella: To be chosen as the project lead during the Girl Scout Week 2020 was a valuable experience for me. Even I encountered doubt and challenges .All of those were combated with the motivation and drive we have. Because of the support of the titas and my active members, I became more inspired to lead them towards a successful and fruitful girl scout week.

What's the best response from the girls you had received?

Ella: The best response I received from the girls was the one that stated that our activities were complete and organized, and the girl leaders replied immediately to queries. This is because this statement proves that we achieved our goal. . We were even told by titas that

the girls enjoyed communicating about the activities in their group chats.They couldn't resist doing the tasks because they said that the activities we prepared were so enjoyable and cute. They helped each other and became productive together.

Precious: It’s the “Manami inyo pub mats manang!”.

For me, that was the best response since we put our effort into making and designing it. But as long as the girls are enjoying the activity, it’s a more than enough response.

What is your message to inspire the girls?

Precious: To all inspiring girls out there, just wait for the right time. Don’t take the opportunities for granted. If there is one, then grab it. Claim it because it’s yours! Don’t lose hope kay “kaya ta ini.”

Remember to shine, dream and smile. Stay Safe!

Ella: Learn to take control of your own life.

New Normal insigths A GIRL SCOUT’S WAY OF FIGHTING STRESS

Since we are used to doing things face to face, dealing with this pandemic and trying to adjust to it is very stressful. To help with this problem, here are some tips on how to fight with stress in this time of pandemic.

First, follow a proper daily routine. Maintaining a healthy daily routine has a significant effect on your lifestyle and health, and it will aid in the development of a strong body capable of

What do we need to do to save our Mother Earth? Most of us know that our planet is suffering due to the pollution that we are giving it every day. Some of us just forget about it and leave like nothing happened.

So what can we contribute to save our home? There are many things that we can do, like planting trees or plants. By planting trees, it can help reduce the risk of landslide, flooding, and many more. Trees also provide a clean breeze of oxygen.

Trees also is also a source of lumber for construction of houses and buildings. Another way to save Mother Earth is helping in cleaning the streets. There are some organized events which help in cleaning the streets, the schools, malls, and other community places. We can volunteer in these sort of activities.

Biking for some is a way they can achieve peace, a sense of freedom, sometimes a time when they can reflect, or test someone's endurance when coming home late. Biking has made other people healthier and stronger, some of which even have much clearer skin due to biking, or have even more scars and wounds.

Biking is a way where people can find new adventures, new places, and friends. Biking is also a way to spend a good time with family members and friends.

Seek professional advice and help when going biking, get the right gears and tools and make sure your seat level is ok. Stay safe and wear your helmets. See you on the road, friends!
