A year has passed since the last face-to-face activity was held by the GSP Iloilo Council. But despite the pandemic’s restrictive situation, a number of Ilongga scouts who strive to make a difference in their community redefined the so-called “New Normal” and used this time to pursue their project with dedicated time and effort.

Everyone’s hard work paid off as the Iloilo Girl Scout Council once again produced 36 Senior and Cadet Girls Scouts as recipients of the Chief Girl Scout Medal Award. This was learned during the announcement of the official results on April 5,2021.

The Chief Girls Scout Medal is the highest and the most prestigious award given to a girl by the Girls Scouts of the Philippines. These awardees were able to acquire this award through their commitment, leadership and sense of duty in implementing an annual community project that may be under ecology, health, livelihood and cultural heritage.

The new normal added to the challenge for this year’s awardees but this did not dampen their spirits in continuing the community projects with positivity and perseverance.

The burning passion of these girl scouts were encouraged by their supportive troop leaders, family and barangay leaders and folks.

B

eing part of an influential organization such as the Girl Scouts of the Philippines is definitely a rich code to live by. To be part of a significant event where leaders hone their talents, showcase their skills and allow them to experience a lot is a great privilege to all the people in the organization. Amidst all the challenges we experienced, it did not stop the girl scout volunteers’ burning passion to continue the legacy of the movement especially to Iloilo Council.

Every three years, the Iloilo Girl Scout Council holds a council convention and election to give honor to the people who have been a significant part of the success of IGSC and to elect a new set of leaders for the Council Board Triennium 2021-2024.

Due to CoViD-19 health and travel restrictions, the event was conducted for the first time via Zoom on March 6, 2021. Adult Leaders, District Committee Chairpersons, District Commissioners, District Field Advisers from Iloilo and Guimaras Islands were in attendance and participated. The IGSC also gave awards to the districts and schools which performed excellently during the event.

It was followed by the singing of the Philippine National Anthem, with Tita Akeena Rosalie Siladan leading the Panunumpa sa Watawat ng Pilipinas. The Girl Scout Promise and Law was executed

by Eiana Lyca Eucareza. Council Executive, Mrs. Marie Claire Laru-an gave warm words of welcome. The Council President, Mrs. Gudelia V. Coo presented her report and the program concluded with a heart-warming message from Mrs. Aida C. Saromines, Regional Executive Director.

Triennium 2018-2021 can be described as amazing and unforgettable. These were the years that we celebrated our 70th anniversary and mark new milestones for the Council as we transition to the the new normal; another way of life and another kind of excitement, that God has deemed for us to experience but because of it we learn to become better volunteers, better girl scouts; more imaginative and resourceful, because we were able to become resilient and be true to our vocation as servant leaders.

The legacy of the movement is within the hands of the newly elected council board members and officers to create new experiences, learnings, and memories as it serves to mold and shape girls and adults to be the better version of themselves as they live with the Girl Scout promise and law.

CHIEF GIRL SCOUT EVALUATION

The rage of the pandemic never stopped the determination of 32 aspiring Chief Girl Scout applicants for the year 2020-2021 of the Iloilo Girl Scout Council.

According to Council Executive, Tita Marie Claire Laru-an, "Usually the chief girl scouts applicants are more responsible, more mature and more confident after they finish their projects.

Along the process, they develop their leadership and communications skills.

They are not only helping their communities but also themselves. That's actually the essence of being a chief girl scout, helping communities while discovering and developing one’s self into a better person."

On April 23, 2021, while following the safety health protocols, Tita Claire and 9 other evaluators conducted a council evaluation to the 6 applicants of Mostro National High School, namely; 1. Cdt. GS Ma. Bhea Novem S. Aritalla said, "We did a lot of preparation before the evaluation. But I still felt nervous during the evaluation. After that, I was so grateful for everything that I have done. I can't explain my happiness after coming up with a community project. For me, I did an accomplishment not just for our community but for myself as well.”

The Chief Girl Scout Medal Scheme (CGSMS) is the scheme that is built on the concept of the total development of the girl: Spiritual, Mental, Physical, Social and Emotional.

Tita Frem Sette Nazareta or "Tita Candy'' said, "As a Troop Leader, the first thing ko gid ginahambal sa mga girls is, "NEVER say NEVER" without giving it a try or doing something. If you have goals, you will do your best to achieve or reach those goals. Pero syempre, one step at a time lang. Learn to prioritize things, then focus sa kon ano ang priority mo at the moment. Kon gusto mo mag Chief Med, well then, let it be your priority for now, focus on a project and manage your time. Kay honestly, indi well off akon mga girls, pero gina encourage ko gid sila to make a difference, think outside the box, kag it doesn't mean nga kon pigado kamo, you can do less sa community mo. It is always based on a person's attitude and perseverance. I always remind them as well that ang ma awardan ka as Chief Med bonus na lang gid na, what is more important is the values you learned along your journey, and syempre kon ano man na mga na learn nyo bring it as your guide sa life nyo. I just really wanted to tell you girls that I am so proud of you and may you continue to be an agent of change.”

80 NATIONAL YOUNG ACHIEVERS AWARDEES

Akeena Rosalie Siladan, a troop leader from the Iloilo Girl Scout Council was chosen as one of the 80 National Young Achiever awardees of Girl Scouts of the Philippines last August 10, 2020 Since the girl scouting movement has been alive for the past 80 years here in the Philippines, the Girl Scouts of the Philippines conducted the search for GSP 80 National Young Achievers last 2019, with the theme: “GSP@80: One Family, One mission”.

The nominations recognizes former and active Girl Scouts for their notable achievements within and outside the GSP movement as well as their continuous efforts to contribute positively to the social, economic, environmental, and cultural development of their communities and the country as a whole.

he Girl Scouts of the Philippines had successfully elected the new officers and 37 members of the Central Board headed by Dr. Cristina “Nina” Lim-Yuson as the recently elected national president for Triennium 2021-2024.

The election was virtually held via Zoom with 300 selected delegates from all over the country. The election was held on the day of the 25th National Convention last May 22-27, 2021 and was also recorded live on Facebook.

Among the 19 nominees for the board members, two ilongga scouts were elected as part of the new Central Board Officers.

Ms. Hyacinth B. Bangero ranked first and was also elected as the GSP National Secretary for the Triennium 2021-2024. She is a Chief Girl Scout Medalist batch 2009 from Banate, Iloilo. In 2010, Ms. Bangero was chosen as one of the Most Outstanding Girl Scouts and she attended the 13th International Girl Scout Camp held at Gangwondo, South Korea in 2011. She was also one of the 75 awardees for the National Young Achievers Award last 2015 on the celebration of the 75th anniversary of the Girl Scout of the Philippines.

Because of her great leadership and exemplary accomplishments, she was given the opportunity to be one of the chosen adults by the executive committee of the GSP to represent the Philippines in the triennial gathering of the 150 countries in 2015. Ms. Bangero is also part of the creative team for the 2020 World Thinking Day Activity held in Pune, India.

The other Ilongga Scout who made it to the Central Board is Ms.

Rose Jade Eugene S. Delgado. She placed fifth in the election and was consequently elected as the GSP National Assistant Treasurer. She was a Chief Girl Scout Medalist in 2013 and was also the chairman of the Senior Planning Board of the Iloilo Girl Scout Council in 2013-2014.

She was a Girl Representative of the Visayas Region of the Iloilo Council and an Alternative Girl Representative of the Visayas Region in 2012-2015.

During her active Girl Scout years, Ms. Delgado was appointed as the Presidential Appointee of the Former President Benigno Aquino III as a National Youth Sector Representative to the Board, Council for the Welfare of Children in 2015-2018. She is also part of the GSP International Affairs Committee (2019-2020) and Global Youth Leader for Nutrition in line with the GPN Programme in 2018 up to the present.

In line with their new positions, Ms. Bangero and Ms. Delgado had media interviews starting with Radio Mindanao Network’s Sunday Special on June 31 with host Double M.l .

These two Ilongga scouts inspired many people including those outside the Girl Scout organization. They are one of the exemplary professionals the GSP honed from childhood. The accomplishments of their works and training from council to international activities greatly contributed to the organization.

to Turn an Eyesore into a

Beautiful Spot

roject Magic Spot is a community development program with the goal of converting an "eyesore" area into a magnificent spot with the partnership and cooperation of the girls within the community. This also aims to enhance the girl's individual planning skills as well as their ability to work with one another in carrying out the said project.

On April 7, 2021, Cadet Troop No. 17 Everlasting has made history as the first ever troop in Iloilo Council to win the 2020 National Outstanding Magic Spot Project with Mrs. Marie Claire E. Laru-an and Mrs. Desiree Balasaa as the troop leader and co-leader respectively. This was adjudged by the National Evaluators, namely; Program Committee Chairperson Dr. Josephina M. Parentela; Program Committee Vice Chairperson Dr. Christina L. Yuson; and Program Committee Member Ms. Alice Am Pañares. The troop will receive a Plaque of Recognition and a cash prize of ₱10,00.00 which the troop can use for their necessary needs.

The winning Magic Spot, also known as the Bingauan Hidden Park is located at Brgy. Bingauan, Badiangan, Iloilo which is 41 kms. away from the city. It has an area covering up to 3,500 sq. meters. The hidden park contains two bahay kubo, a comfort room and various species of ornamental plants and fruit-bearing trees to beautify the surroundings.

Recyclables such as old tires and empty soft drinkbottles were also used. Being located on the hill where internet connections are very strong, it is currently used as a study area during online classes for students who do not have internet connection at home.

The efforts of the 15 cadet-girls from different schools and with the help of the barangay officials, tanods and members of the 4Ps made the eyesore area, which is now known as Bingauan Hidden Park, become a huge success.

INTERNA WOMEN'S

"She remembered who she was and the game changed"  - Lalah Deliah March of every year is International Women's Month. A celebration that not only recognizes the accomplishments and successes of women, but also

recognizes and brings awareness to the continuing social injustices and gender equality issues that women face every day in order to challenge and correct them.

The Iloilo Girl Scout Council commemorates International Women's Month, by honoring women all over the globe. Starting with a pledge, Titas and Manangs posted all over social media their promises and pledges in hopes to inspire women to take action and choose to challenge societal norms and gain change within themselves.

The celebration also coincided with The Challenge of Family Life, one of the Eight-Point Challenge projects, which focused on familial bonds, that occurred within the same month. International Women's Month activities were then merged with “The Challenge of Family Life” by the Iloilo Council to create the hashtag, “#IWDxFAMarch” which started a trend of stories and posts allowing girls to share experiences with a special woman in their lives.

TIONAL ATIONAL S MONTH A mother-daughter or girl scout-sister interview was featured in one activity, which showed the impact of how they were empowered by influential women in their families. Many Manangs and Titas were given an opportunity to highlight the stories of those who guided and inspired them.

The girl scouts were also encouraged to use the hashtags: #ChooseToChallenge, #ForHerWorld and #IWD2021 to create awareness through social media, with the goal of empowering and inspiring other women to take action in their lives and to grow for the better. Proof of this overwhelming support is in the shared posts from the Iloilo Girl Scout Council’s Facebook Page.

As March came to a close, the support and love that came from every girl through their social media accounts was very heart-warming to read. These were in the form of comments or likes and other positive emojis on posts, sharing interest or discussing social issues.

The Iloilo Girl Scout Council ended the year’s International Women’s Month with a post to remind every girl that despite the end of this celebration, they should continue to choose to challenge and take action for all women of any age.

Reminders to continue to grow together, to protect one another and to never forget that behind every successful woman is a tribe of other successful women, who have each other's back, were prominent on all the girls’ faces.

“The Earth will not continue to offer its harvest, except with faithful stewardship. We cannot say we love the land and then take steps to destroy it for use by future generations” – John Paul II. To celebrate the 2021 Earth hour on March 27, 2021, the Cadet Troop 23 of Central Philippine University organized a conference dubbed as “Envirotalk: Climate Change to Save Earth”.

Dr. Jaspare V. Barrido was the resource speaker who tackled climate change and global warming for at least an hour via the online communication app of Zoom.

This forum emboldens not only the youth but every person to gain awareness about the world’s current climate situation and educate them about how to contribute in reducing the disturbing state of our environment.

After the session, everyone was encouraged to switch off the lights for an hour to minimize electric consumption as the first simple step to decrease the effects of climate change as well as acknowledge the annual Earth Hour Celebration.

GIRL SCOUTS LAW : TO GOD AND MY COUNTRY By: Cadet Girl Scout Carmela Jade Cortez

The Challenge of Spirituality and Well-being is a Girl Scout activity which contributes to the making of a well-rounded girl with a sound mind, body and spirit. This was the focus on the fourth month of the online activity dedicated to the Eight-Point Challenge.

The fourth challenge was launched on April 10, 2021 withSenior GS Amber Gwyneth Aguilos and Cdt. GS Emelyn Sua-an Bagsain as leaders.

The three exciting activities they prepared were Chain of Hearts, Pledge of Commitment

and Through the Lens.Chain of Hearts is

about letting the girls remember the things they had been through.

Then they cut out hearts where they could list the names of people who helped them go through that situation. The second activity is the Pledge of Commitment where the girls are tasked to list their bad habits. They then wrote a pledge for themselves to correct those bad habits and to discover better ways that will lead them to the right path. The last activity is Through the Lens. The girls had to choose three muses, namely: animal, object, and person that had an impact on each girl’s well-being .

To cap the month-long activity,, the girl leaders organized on May 8, 2021 a digital training entitled “Finding Your Purpose in the Pandemic”. Pastor Lloyd U. Basco, a values education teacher from Central Philippine University was the guest speaker. Pastor Basco gave advice and shared ways to find one’s purpose in life. He highlighted four steps to find one’s devotion in life . First is to start with Jesus. Second, is to seek Godly counsel-encouragements. Third, is to study the Bible, and lastly,

acknowledged that girl scouting is a good organization in which young girls are trained to be God-fearing which can help in their everyday life and to maintain their well-being.

Tita Helen H. Deguma, our Council’s Diplomat Trainer concluded the event with these words, “we (Girl Scouts ) are made to open our eyes and our awareness to find what we can do to our surroundings not only for us but also for others”.

Due to the pandemic, scouting activities like campings cannot be held as we usually do. However, the Iloilo Girl Scout Council conducted “Kamping sa Balay” on May 28 - 30, 2021. This was a virtual way for girls to have fun while learning and feeling the vibe of camping outdoors, from the comforts of their homes.

Under the theme of “Padayon sa Tunga sang Pandemya”, there was nothing stopping us from gaining knowledge and enjoying ourselves through this virtual camping.

Kamping sa Balay 2, was open to all twinkler, star, junior, senior, and cadet girl scouts. Each day, the girls must accomplish the tasks given to them in their schedule of activities.

Once a Girl Scout, Always a Girl Scout!

This three-day camp was filled with activities that brought enjoyment to the girls who participated. It gave them a chance to acquire knowledge and skills from the activities given.

They helped the girls become productive throughout the day. Some activities, such as tiedye, poster making, TikTok challenge, and many more helped to showcase their talents and creativity.

The “Kamping sa Balay 2”, was a successful event that made the girls realize that the pandemic we are dealing with, can not hinder us from doing what we love. This odd situation just opens a new opportunity for us to discover more things. Kamping sa Balay 2 helped us realize the possibility of doing what we love amidst this pandemic.

Due to a turn of unfortunate events, many of our activities and plans were shifted to virtual ones. As we are all locked up in the comfort of our homes, the Girl Scouts of Iloilo Council found a way to continue its services, but this time, behind screens.

The Ilongga Scout TV was launched by the Iloilo Girl Scout Council earlier this year. Many of you may be wondering what this is or where we can access it.

The Ilongga Scout TV can be found on YouTube. With its own channel on the said social media platform, the Council has been able to showcase the girls’ works. It is a great avenue for the girls to share their projects and community works. The Iloilo Council can also keep everyone informed of its activities and achievements through this program.

YouTube has always been known to many, especially to the younger generation. Because of the pandemic, its fame and popularity increased. Now, it has become a platform where individuals could even earn money.

The Iloilo Girl Scout Council is continuously widening its reach and utilizing possible resources. Ilongga Scout TV will continue to feature the wonderful doings of the girls with the hope that they can continue to inspire the community amidst any circumstances.

It looks like we won’t be hearing much of those “thank you songs” but more of like, share, and subscribe!

COMMUNITY PANTRY PH Girl Scouts continue to uphold promise and law despite pandemic thru community pantries Sr. GS Leanna Grace L. Oro "Give according to your means; take according to your need," wrote Ana Patricia Non, 26, who organized and spearheaded the Maginhawa Community Pantry which was a bamboo cart packed with rice, veggies, milk, vitamins, face masks, canned goods, soap, and other necessities.

A community pantry is a movement that aims to dispense food to locals experiencing food insecurity. The supplies can be from local donations, food banks, or organizations.

With the Maginhawa Community Pantry being the first to gain media attention through candid photos taken by passersby and uploaded on social media, hundreds of others across the country followed suit, each giving their own interpretation of the pantry.

We all know that everytime a lockdown is declared, what comes to mind are ‘This will be boring’ or ‘I won’t be able to go out again’. Since it is the time of pandemic, here are some fun ways to do while on quarantine or just at home:

You can learn a lot from books, depending on your interest. One of the fun ways to ease boredom is you laugh, cry, smile, feel anger, you feel pain based on what the characters are doing.

WATCHING MOVIES/ SERIES

If you’re a bookworm, and your favorite book has a movie adaptation, you’d be really happy. By watching movies/series, the time will pass without you noticing.

You will also enjoy it.

BIKING

Every morning or afternoon, we have nothing to do but just look at our phones, watch Tiktok or Youtube videos, and listen to music. Biking helps us lose weight, you’d also enjoy biking if you have a companion. Just wear a mask.

EXERCISE

Just like what’s stated in #3, exercising helps you lose weight. It can also help you prevent getting the virus by boosting your immunity.

It also helps to have a healthy lifestyle. Just eat healthy foods.

COOK/BAKE

By knowing how to cook, you won’t need to call somebody just to cook for you. If you don’t know how to cook or bake, just watch cooking tutorials on YouTube or Google-search on what to do or buy.
