Important notes on the steering system The dimensions of the steering system and the mechanical steering transmission ratio were designed such that, in the event of a malfunction in the hydraulic power steering system, the effort required to turn the steering wheel would not exceed a specific value deemed by legislators to be the maximum reasonable force. For vehicles above 12 t this force is 450 N (400 N for vehicles between 3.5 t and 12 t) applied to the steering wheel circumference when turning the vehicle from straight-ahead driving into a circle with a 20 m radius at a road speed of approximately 10 km/h. No more than 6 seconds must pass from the start of turning to reaching the 20 m radius. The driver must be aware that, in the event of a sudden failure in the power steering (e.g. due to a pump drive malfunction), the bus will remain steerable but considerably more effort will be required.
Since there is an extremely low probability of this situation occurring - but if it does occur, it often does so completely unexpectedly - the driver could wrongly assume that the steering system has been blocked. In fact, the driver merely has to use the level of effort required to continue steering. This important information is intended to clarify the scenario described and prevent the driver from possibly misjudging the situation. Danger. In the event of a power steering failure, the bus becomes very difficult to steer. Have the malfunction rectified immediately at an EvoBus Service Partner.
