He is one of the world’s best-known Australian actors, part of a very small circle which includes Nicole Kidman, Mel Gibson and Russell Crowe. He is also one of the very few actors to have been awarded, over his career, an Oscar, an Emmy and a Tony Award. He is the actor who amazed the audience at the Venice Film Festival in 1997, at the premiere of Shine, the film in which he portrayed David Helfgott, the prodigious concert pianist who struggled his whole life with manic behavior, anxiety, nervous breakdowns, always on the brink of plunging into the abyss of mental illness. He is Geoffrey Rush. A degree in English Literature, a theater internship in Paris, Mel Gibson as flat mate when they were both broke and trying to make a name for themselves. For over twenty years, he has been playing the role of pirate Hector Barbossa in the Pirates of the Caribbean series. But he also played Colin Firth’s speech therapist in The King’s Speech and starred in The Best Offer by Giuseppe Tornatore. His latest film, Storm Boy, opened in movie theaters in Italy on June 24, distributed by Medusa. It is the story, based on a very popular novel in Australia, of a young boy who forms a very close bond with a pelican. Geoffrey Rush plays the grown-up boy, in a film shot along the wild Australian coasts which somehow recall the Island of Capri, the ongoing dialogue between the rocks and the sea, with man witnessing the conflict between the elements of nature. We did the interview via Zoom. And we learned that Geoffrey Rush is madly in love with Italy, mostly SouthernItaly, mostly the Campania region. Is there a film, a character that transports you to Capri? There is an actor, who played in a film titled L’imperatore di Capri: he is Totò, and I would so want to know how to speak Italian to be able to fully understand his humour. But by simply observing his mimicry and gestures, I realize that he was one of the world’s greatest actors. I never tire of watching him. What is your relationship with Italy? Italy made me what I am today: my career as an international actor began with Shine, which premiered at the Ven-

È uno dei pochissimi al mondo ad aver vinto, nella sua carriera, un Oscar, un Tony Award e un Emmy Award. È l’attore che ha sorpreso tutti, quando alla Mostra del cinema di Venezia fu presentato, nel 1997, Shine, il film in cui interpretava il genio, i tic, le ansie, il bisogno d’amore, i crolli psichici di David Helfgott, pianista prodigioso, sempre sull’orlo della caduta nell’abisso della malattia mentale. Il suo ultimo film, Storm Boy - il ragazzo che sapeva volare, è approdato sugli schermi italiani il 24 giugno, distribuito da Medusa. È la storia, tratta da un romanzo molto celebre in Australia, di un ragazzino che ha un rapporto speciale, di affetto e di sintonia, con un pellicano. Lui interpreta quel ragazzino divenuto adulto, in un film girato in scenari selvaggi delle coste australiane che ricordano, per certi versi, l’isola di Capri, il dialogo delle rocce con il mare, con l’uomo spettatore dello scontro degli elementi. Incontriamo l’attore via Zoom. E scopriamo che Geoffrey Rush ha un grande amore per l’Italia. Soprattutto per il Sud. Soprattutto per la Campania. Un film o un personaggio che la portano a Capri? C’è un attore, che ha interpretato un film che si chiama L’imperatore di Capri: è Totò, e io vorrei tanto sapere l’italiano per poter capire completamente la sua comicità. Ma anche per quello che riesco a intuire nei suoi gesti, capisco che è stato uno dei più grandi del mondo. Non mi stancherei mai di vederlo. Che rapporto ha con l’Italia? L’Italia mi ha reso quello che sono: con Shine, che fu proiettato alla Mostra del cinema di Venezia, è iniziata la mia
