Colors and sweet scents. The essence of Capri poised between the sky, the sea and the rocks. A breathtaking view. Just a few steps away from the Piazzetta, in the island’s most relaxing spot. Welcome to the Gardens of Augustus. Laid out on terraces dropping sheer to the sea, the Gardens were established in the 1930s by the German steel magnate Friedrich Alfred Krupp within the property he purchased to build his mansion in Capri, which was never built. The Gardens’ flower-beds are filled with geraniums, dahlias and Spanish broom and are surrounded by pine trees, junipers, palm trees and holm-oaks. A variety testifying to Capri’s rich vegetation. Friedrich Alfred Krupp was also a marine biology expert and he enjoyed going to Capri on his yacht, lain at anchor in the Marina Piccola Bay. He commissioned the construction of the beautiful scenic route named after him to easily reach the yacht from his suite room at the Quisisana Grand Hotel, where he used to stay. And in order to admire the incomparable view and his engineering feat, he also commissioned the construction of terraced gardens above the steep and winding Via Krupp. The view gives, to the left, onto the Certosa Valley, located between Mount Tuoro, Mount Tiberio, Mount San Michele and the Faraglioni. To the right stands Mount Solaro, dominating the Marina Piccola Bay and the spectacularly winding Via Krupp, a “work of art”, as the great architect Roberto Pane used to describe it.

About ten thousand square meters of local flora spread over

10 terraces and are enriched by neoclassical statues found in an ancient villa which once housed the Fascist party’s headquarters, and then placed in the Gardens. Careful restyling works have restored to their original splendor the statues representing the four seasons in the guise of human beings and decorating the space around the central fountain. One can also admire the “Landing of Citrus Fruits on the Isle of Capri”, a majolica bench by the artist Franco Calise. Lenin lived on the island in 1908 and one of the terraces features a commemoration stone by Giacomo Manzù dedicated to him. The Gardens of Augustus are part of Capri’s unique heritage. It is estimated that over three hundred thousand visitors walk the Gardens’ grounds every year. Colori, profumi. L’essenza di Capri sospesa tra cielo, mare e roccia. Una vista che leva il respiro. A pochi passi dalla piazzetta, nel luogo più rilassante dell’isola. Benvenuti ai Giardini di Augusto. Strutturati in terrazze a picco sul mare, sono stati realizzati negli anni ’30 per volontà dell’industriale tedesco Friedrich Alfred Krupp e nascono nell’antica proprietà che il magnate dell’acciaio acquistò per costruire la sua dimora caprese mai realizzata. Gerani, dalie e ginestre affollano colorate le aiuole. Pini, ginepri, palme e lecci le circondano. Un esempio d’organizzazione botanica in stile caprese. Friedrich Alfred Krupp, proprietario delle grandi acciaierie tedesche, era un appassionato di ricerche biologiche marine, e amava recarsi a Capri con il suo panfilo, che ormeggiava nella Baia di Marina Piccola. Per raggiungere facilmente l’imbarcazione, dalle suite del Grand Hotel Quisisana dove soggiornava, fece costruire la splendida strada panoramica che porta il suo nome. Per ammirare l’ineguagliabile panorama e il suo capolavoro d’ingegneria, commissionò la costruzione dei Giardini sui terrazzamenti che la sovrastano. Il paesaggio si apre a sinistra sulla valle della Certosa, che si trova sui Faraglioni, tra il Monte Tuoro, il Monte Tiberio e il Monte San Michele. Sulla destra si erge il Monte Solaro, sopra la baia di Marina Piccola e si ammirano gli spettacolari tornanti di via Krupp. Un’opera d’arte, come la definì il grande architetto Roberto Pane.

Circa diecimila metri quadrati di flora isolana distribuita su

oltre 10 terrazzamenti e impreziosita da statue neoclassiche, collocate nei Giardini dopo essere state rinvenute in un’antica villa di Capri che ospitò la casa del fascio. Un’attenta opera di restyling ha riportato all’antico splendore le statue raffiguranti le quattro stagioni sotto sembianze umane, che adornano una delle piazzole intorno alla fontana centrale. Passeggiando si può ammirare “lo sbarco degli agrumi sull’isola di Capri”, originale panca in maiolica, opera del poliedrico artista Franco Calise, ischitano di nascita e caprese d’adozione. Lenin soggiornò sull’isola nel 1908, e su una delle terrazze è collocata una stele di Giacomo Manzù che lo ricorda. I Giardini di Augusto sono un patrimonio unico dell’isola e si stima che ogni anno siano oltre trecentomila i visitatori che girano tra le sue aiuole.
