Sciptural Advertising

"A city that is built upon a hill cannot be hid."

"Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good y761fts."-\,{atthew V. 14-16

There you are !

One of the finest authorities for advertising your business that has ever been written. If Matthew had lived in this day and generation he lvould be one of the biggest boosters the advertising game could have.

If a dealer wants authority for advertising his business, for visualizing it, and for keeping it before the attention of his trade, grab these two splendid scriptural injunctions.

"A city that is built upon a hill cannot be hid." Certainly not. And a retail lumber business that is operated upon so high and intelligent a basis that it demands and commands the attention of the community, cannot be "hid" either.

"Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works." How is that for directions for running

When you grow weary of the boasts of men, Go to a tree, myfriend-one that has stood Long patient years within a silent wood. Beneath its branches you will find again

Anything long 1ost. Trees are content to be

As God created them. No bough that turns Its golden thoughts to autumn ever yearns

Beyond a hillside immortality.

Go to a tree in silence, you will find

In the soft eloquence of brrd and leaf

Serenity beyond the voice of grief

And faith beyond the reach of human kind.

Man spends his noisy days in search of gain, While trees fiind God in sunlight, soil, and rain.

Man has ever hastened to cover barren coldness, first with skins, next with hangings, and then with wood, the intimate, sympathetic material that has been man's friend since the beginning of time, used in the peasant's humble cot, ceiled with wood and decorated r'vith quaint carvings, yet deemed noble enough to house his God. For Solomon, even though stone and clay lay at his feet, searched the almost treeless area of the Promised Land that he might have wood for the Temple.

Rome used to give her soldiers a daily ration of salt as part of their pay. "Sal" is salt, and rvhen the salt was com-

puted in terms of money, money. Thus weget our worth his salt' came from thing definite.

National Forest Products Week will be observed this year October 15-21. It is a time set aside to call attention to the importance of wood. Hoo-Hoo has adopted this as a project. Several associations are contributing their efforts in that direction.

In calling attention to wood it is well to contemplate the part it plays in the lives of every man, woman and child. We live under it, we sit on it, we read from it, we dress with it-we even eat it. Molasses has long been made from it, and only recently a nerv cellulose non-calory food substance has been developed from it. Wood provides us houses, furniture. newsprint. and clothes

*>k*

Remove wood from our lives and the 5,000 or so products derived from it, and we rvould live drab lives. Imagine life without mu5i6-ns pianos, no violins; without newspapers, books, magazines (especially your fireside favorite, the CLM) ; without boxes, wrapping paper, canoes, barrels, bowling alleys. Yes, life without wood would be as unthinkable as breakfast ham without eggs.

Nation's Oufstanding New Junior College Uses Fire-Protecfed Wood

NTEW CONCEPTS in education

^ \ and educational facilities are making Foothill Junior College, Los Gatos, California, the most talked-about institution of its kind in the nation.

This month, Foothill occupies its new educational plant-36 buildings atop a knoll rising in the Los Altos foothills. It will become the new academic home of 3,500 youths and adults, yet Foothill Junior College came into being only three years ago with only an antiquated grade school as its "campus."

Foothill is truly a community college. Voters of the community college district approved a $10.4 million bond issue for the new camDus. Its curriculum and its educational philosophies are geared to the needs of this northern Santa Clara County area, providing business and technical training in tw6 years that far exceeds normal trade school training, or providing two years of training in the arts which qualifies the graduate well for entrance in a four-year college.

The nerv concept in design provided by architects Ernest J. Kump and Masten & Hurd, won two coveted

architectural awards even before ground was broken in Jrly, 1960. Buildings are in study-area groupings, mainly of redwood exteriors set off by exposed concrete piers and with redwood shake roofs with parapets that conceal all external vents, fans and utility connections. Glued-laminated wood beams support the roofs with broad overhangs extended over walks that surround the buildings. Larger buildings include a two-story library, three large octagonal lecture halls and two large physical education buildings.

With its extensive use of wood to p rovi de outstanding architectural beauty in such a wooded setting, Foothill alsohas planned carefully for safety. In major buildings where there may be heavy occupancy, exposed wood in what might otherwise be critical locations is NON-COM fireprotected wood. Fire-protected chemicals were driven deeply into its fibers in huge pressure-cylinders of Koppers Company, Inc. wood-treating plants at Wilmington, California and Everett, Washington. The NON-COM wood passed IJnderwriters' Laboratory tests, and approval for its use also was given

by the California State Fire Marshall and the California Division of Architecture.

Approximately 45,000 square feet of fire-protected plywood and 165,000 board feet of fire-protected lumber was used at Foothill, including 100,000 board feet of Douglas fir and 65,000 board feet of rough-sau'n redwood exterior siding.

Newmqn Lumber to Open New Store This Month

Finishing preparations are now under way on Newman Lumber Company's new 3000 sq. ft. showroom which will be "oDen for business" in Newman, California, by the middle of this month. The completion of the store will be celebrated by a tu'o-day grand opening engineered by manager Al Togni and assistant manager Tony Mendonca.

The showroom is new in every respect including all new fixtures and and displays. In addition to regular fluorescent lighting, manager Togni has also installed severai adjustable spotlights in the ceiling which can be focused on any "special" display or item the yard might be featuring. The spotlight idea should lend itself nicely to the advertising of "specials" : "This week Newman Lumber's spotlight is on XYZ Roofing-just $$ a roll, etc."

"Operation Willow Glen"

I\TATURALLY, most of us are hesitant to probe into I \ anybody's financial affairs, so when we were down San Jose way covering the recent grand opening of Willow Glen Lumber Company's big new showroom, we merely asked general manager Bill Mitchell what he figured his total attendance ran for the three-day opening.

We received somewhat of a shock when the affable manager replied: "Well, we took in just over $15,000, some $13,500 cash and the rest in credit card purchases. Figuring a buck a head I'd say we easily had 15,000 visitors during the three days."

One quick look around the brand-new Willow Glen plant would convince anyone thatBill's estimate was probably conservative. One of the most noteworthy assets of the new layout is its parking lot, one of the largest-if not the largest-parking area we've ever seen at a yard operation. Buiit to accommodate over 300 autos, the parking lot is completely blacktopped and looks just like a big shopping center lot, complete with marked lanes and attendant ! \Arillow Glen's huge grand opening was held on July 14-16 to coincide with the firm's 29th birthday. Willow GlenLumber Company was established by Arthur S. NlcKinnev on Auguit l-, 7932, in the then incorporated town of Willow Glen (since 1937 a part of San Jose). In 194$ McKinney sold Willow Glen Lumber to a group of San Jose businessmen headed by Ray Sandkuhle, who prior to buying the McKinney yard were owners of Victory Lumber Company, then located on Willow Glen's present site.

At the time of the hase, Willow Glen Lumber Com- trme the purchase, Wrllow pany was located on the site of what is now Kincaid Lumber Company, located at 720 Lincoln Avenue. Shortlv after the Shortly after Lompany, rocateo /zu Llncoln purchase, Willow Glen Lumber was moved toits present location. the name Victorv Lumber sivins awav to Willow location, Victory giving away Glen Lumber Company.

Present officers of the corporation include : Sal M. Sanfilippo, president; Dr. S. V. Campise, vice-president; and Sam Della Maggiore, treasurer. Della Maggiore is also a member of the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors.

Active manag'ement of the firm, however, rests in the capable hands of Bill Mitchell, who has been associated withWillolv Glen for more than 10 years. Bill's assistant manag'er is Dick Mendence, also a veteran of the Willow Glen organization.

Besides running an all 'round do-it yourself shopping pavilion and building materials one-stop shop operation, Willow Glen is also active in fence contracting in the area. The firm regularly employs some 30 men in the field in its fencing division, 80 to n% of this work being done for tract developers in the Santa Clara Valley region. Other than fencing, however, Willow Glen's yard and store business runs almost 1.OO% with the shoulder trade and small remodeling contractors.

The owners and members of Willow Glen Lumber Company are to be complimented on the development of an unusually fine one-stop building materials center second to none in the area. One has but to remember the former modest showroom andlayout replaced by the new to realize what a tremendous amount of caoital and labor have gone into the project-"Operation Wiilow Glen."

The Wisdom of Solomon

ft was in an English city, the place a local theatre. In the play the king, old and infirm, had two sons, and was debating which should succeed him. He paced up and down the stage, weary and troubled. He asked aloud: "On which of my two sons should I bestow my crown ?"

And a Cockney voice from the gallery called out, "Why not arf a crown apiece, Govner?"

Ingersoll on Childish Loughter

"Strike with hand of fire, O weird musician, thy harp strung with Apollo's golden hair; fill the vast cathedral aisle with symphonies sweet and dim, deft toucher of the organ keys; blow, bugler, blow until thy silver notes do touch the skies with moonlit waves, and charm the lovers wandering on the vine-clad hills; but know your sweetest notes are discords all, compared with childhood's htppy laugh; the laugh thatfills the eyes rvith light and every heart with joy; on,rippling river of life, thou art the boundary line between beasts and men, and every wayward wave of thine doth drown some fiend of care; Oh laughter, divine laughter of joy, make dimples enough in the cheeks of the world, to catch and hold and glorify, all tears of grief ."

H'is Wqs Reolly ATop Line

A party of traveling men seated in the lobby of the hotel, got to bragging about the firmsthey worked for, the goods they sold, each trying to out-talk the others. Finally, a man in the corner who had notyet been heard from, spoke up. He said:

"No house in the country, I am proud to say, has as many people pushing its line of goods than mine."

"What do you sell ?" he was asked.

"Baby carriages," he ansrvered.

No Honest Working Girl

The scene was in a restaurant, The lights were shining fair, A girl sat at a table, And two men were sitting there. Said one man to the girl "Let's have a little drink, or two, And say, kid, take a little booze, It never will hurt you."

But she was an honest working girl,

And quick came her reply, And this it was her answer, As a tear bedimmed her eye: "No honest working girl don't drink no booze, I'm sorry that I have for to refuse, I may not get a cheer, But I'm going to stick to beer, For no honest working girl don't drink no booze."

Nikkel Will Disrribute New Sheet-Boord Product

R. F. Nikkel Lumber Company, Sacramento, has been named exclusive distributor for a new Sheet-Board plant recently constructed in Sacramento. The new plant, Versa Products, is the only other Sheet-Board plant in California, according to president Tom Bird, veteran Sheet-Board operator.

A relatively new produit, SheetBoard is a workable, nailable, solid lumber panel in rigid, strong "sheet" form. Manufactured in 2'xLC sections. the FHA-approved product is becoming increasingly popular for roof, floor and sidewall sheathing, as well as for many other uses in home, farm, commercial and industrial construction.

"Sheet-Board by Versa" is manufactured in accordance with WPA rules for Sheet-Board. Sheathing grade or No. 4 Common & Better is used in the lumber "core" and a "veneer" of 42 lb. Kraft paper is bonded to each side of the panel under pressure and heat to insure a permanent bond between the paper and wood. The product is manufactured with lap-joints which eliminates the necessity of using building paper (FHA-approved) and individual boards in the panel having lengths less than the full length of the panel are finger jointed and glued.

The Versa panel normally comes in %" thickness, two-feet wide and sixteen feet long. However, the panel can be supplied in any width up to 8', and there is no limit to length other than maximumhandling facilities. Like "endless wood," Sheet-Board is also t'endless."

G-P in LA-A Model Disfribution Cenfer

NCE UPON a time-as most 1-f happy-ending stories used to begin -factories and warehouses were grimy, dark, box-like affairs with four walls and a roof for keeping the weather out and the employees in. If they were efficient unto their purpose, it was probably more by accident than by design. You had a building, and you shaped your production layout to fit into the box.

Today, as most businessmen know, the story is drastically changing. Today's factory or warehouse is funtionally designed for its purpose, attractive in appearance, light and airy, and representative of the best in industrial architecture and planning.

Georgia-Pacific Corporation's new distribution center and office for the Greater Los Angeles area is an admirable example of what modern industry, through such planning, can

achieve in efficient utilization of space, flow of work, service to its customers -and, finally, in visually being one of the best advertisements for itself.

Opened in late summer, the G-P building is located at 7240 Crider Avenue, Pico Rivera. Note from the sketch left that it is just a couple of short turnsfrom the iunction of Rosemead and Washingion Boulevards, convenient to reach from almost any section of the vast metropolitan afea.

The new Georgia-Pacific plywood and lumber center is a two-storv structure of contemporary design,- of reinforced concrete. It provides 61,000 square feet storage under cover, over 4,000 square feet of office space, plus several thousand more feet of outside yard and loading area. Ample parking is available for both customers and employees.

This is the second largest distribution center for the huge building materials firm-the largest being in South Chicago-and, we understand, has been planned as a model for all future facilities. Certainly it isa model in every sense, one thatthe company can be proud of and that should serve it well.

Large double plate glass doors open intoa light and attractive foyer, one wall of which is adorned with a "conversational piece" of a small tree, complete with acorns. To the right is the receptionist's counter, and beyond this a large work area which is the hub of operations of the sales order desks and automatic inventorv control.

HAROID E. SAND Wcltcrn Rcaionol l/lcnogcr

Ground floor offices are devoted to operations of the building materials warehouse activities of Georgia-Pacific. In addition to the large general office, there are those of the executives, an outside salesmen's office, a coffee room for the convenience of employees and other utility rooms.

The Lumber Division of G-P keeps things humming on the second flodr, with again all offices and furnishings being "showcases" for wood. Also here is a large display room where retailers may bringtheir customers for selection of the plywoods and paneling which will best suittheir tastes and purposes. One end of this room is attractively furnished with a sofa, easy f'

Naturally, wood has been used most effectively in paneling and trim throughout the entire ofifice area. \&'e saw probably over 20 different varieties, each enhancing the area or office where used; and it becomes something of a problem to determine which kinds you like best. In fact, if a woodpecker wandered in there, he might well suffer a complete collapse frominability to decide the wood rnost to his taste !

(Continued from Preuious Page) work, and the wheels go round.

Behind this is the huge two-storied warehouse, wide-aisled, amply sprinklered for fire protection, stacked high with all of the many plywoods, doors, interior and exterior finishes and varied products which create G-P's fine reputation-and all as immaculate and orderly as grandma's pantry. A normal inventory encompasses about 100 carloads of building materials. Running the length of the warehouse isa rail siding which accommodates six cars; the covered dock provides convenient unloading during all kinds of weather. (Yes, Southern California will sometimes have weather which isn't always "good, better, or best.")

A large customer loading area assures ample and efficient access and fast loading. Modern materials handling equipment and methods complete the operation designed to keep overhead down and service up.

Georgia-Pacific executives who make their offices in the new building are: Harold E. Sand, recently transferred from the Portland ofifice, Western Regional Manager; R. J. (Bob) Heberle, Manager, Lumber Division; and Virgil Oliver, Jr., a pioneer G-P man in the development of plywood, Pacific Southwest District Manager.

Also important to the area operation are Frank E. Bergstrom, regional credit representative, and William C. Holzer, branch manager. Both of these gentlemen were away from the building on the day of our visit and so do not appear in our pictorial presentation on these pages.

We understand that Georgia-Pacific plans a grand opening of their attractive, service-oriented distribution center in the near future. We think it will be well worth your while to attend. Not just to have a good time-which undoubtedly you will have. But, more importantly, to inspect this outstanding plywood and lumber sales and distribution center for the progressive firm of Georgia-Pacific.

Life Begins oil79

Behind the scenes of the program for Forest Products Day, September 9th at the 1961 California State Fair in Sacramento was C. D. LeMaster.

This was his third year as secretarymanager of the event, having initiated it when he was 79 years of age.

LeMaster, whose appearance and activities belie his 81 years, says he is "just beginning."

"Le" began his lumber career in 1897. He is, of course, remembered as having been publisher and editor of Western Building Review for a number of years.

At present he is hard at work creating a technique to improve lumber processrng.

Much of his time is devoted to International Hoo-Hoo.

NORTHER,N CAT]FORNIA TUMBERTilEN'S 6TH ANNUAL GOIF TOURNAMENT

Hats off once again to George Duff, general manager of Cal-Ida Lumber Company, for his fine work in organizing the 6th Annual Northern California Lumbermen's Golf Tournament ! Enjoying the largest turnout of golfers and dubbers yet, the tourney was played at the Sierra View Country Club in Roseville on Septembbr 8. Nearly 200 lumbermen participated in the event which included a banquet that overflowed the club's big dining room and soilled out into the terrace area where-the late comers enioved the balmy weather and excelfent vittles.

An outstanding part of this year''s tournament was the awarding of trophies rather than golf balls, etc., to the tournament winners. Figuring that a trophy would give a fella' something a little more permanent for his efforts, Duff personaily awarded some 53 trophies to the tournament "deadeyes."

From start to finish it was fine. wellorganized tournament with just about everyone in there swatting away from

the mid-7O's to, shall we say, the "low 100's."

SolidPly-lntersfqle Contqiner's New Concept

2-4-l Tongue & Grooved 4 Edges SOLIDPLY, manufactured by Interstate Container Corporation, Red Bluft, California, introduces an entirely new concept in a complete plywood panel floor system.

Because the first two plies are solid wood, punch-through by pointed or heavy objects is eliminated. SOLIDPLY is tongue and grooved on all four edges, assuring an unbroken floor surface.

4 Edge SOLIDPLY eliminates protruding edges caused by twisting and shrinking. This product is fully sanded on the face. Because the sanded surface provides a smooth panel, plaster, dust, and other dirt do not cling to the floor installation. This means easier clean-up and minimizes printthrough, even with pliant floor tile.

Most lumber grading in the \Mestern Pine region is done u_nder a special lighting arrangement worked out by the Western Pine research laboratory. It combines side and overhead lighting in exactly the right proportion for showing all lumber characteristics. "If we don't see them now, they aren't there," one grader declared after his shdkedown shift under the new lights.

Weyerhoeuser Exponsion

Weyerhaeuser Company will open a new wood products distribution warehouse this fall to serve the greater Buffalo marketing area, it has been announced by Vice President John L. Aram.

The 30,000-square-foot building is now under construction in the Buffalo Industrial Park. It will serve as a distribution center for Weyerhaeuser plywood, lumber and manufactured panel products as well as hardwood doors.

C. R. llenderson, formerly manager of distribution centers at Pittsburgh and Cincinnati, has been appointed wood products division manager for the Buffalo area.

"The new warehouse demonstrates our faith in the continuing growth of the Buffalo area," Aram stated, "and will also provide better service to our customers."

Seiling The Record Slroight

The California Redwood Association, perhaps because their product is so resistant to decay, has given advice to a doctor who gives advice to people worrying about their teeth.

Burton H. Fern, M.D., writer of a column called "'Inside You and Yours," distributed by King Features, told his readers in a recent column "decay spreads through the leathery tooth pulp like termites in a California redwood" after exposure to lactic acid.

A member of CRA's staff read the column and choked on his redwood toothPick. Recovering, he informed Dr. Fern that his figure of speech would cause confusion in the Redwood Region, where every citizen knew a termite would never take more than one bite out of the heart of any of their Sequoia semPervirens -let alone spreading through one like decay through leathery tooth pulp.

"If lactic acid causes tooth decay to spread 'through the leathery tooth PulP like termites in a California redwood' " the CRA's letter to Dr. Fern read, "we'll have to look elsewhere for the cause of decay. Termites just don't cause damage to redwood -though perhaps lactic acid does damage teeth."

The CRA went on to inform the doctor that redwood is one of the few woods in the United States known to be naturally resistant to termites. It ended with a plaintive appeal to correct the misapprehension caused by the smile in a future column, should an apportunity arise.

Perhaps Dr. Fern, in a future column, could say something like "Clean teeth resist decay like the heartwood of California redwood ."

TWENTY.FII'E YEARS AGCD TODAY

As Reported in The California Lumber Merchant, October l, 1956

San Francisco-Announcement was made today by Moore Mill and Lumber Co. that their mill and logging camp has escaped the disastrous fire which practically destroyed the town of Bandon on Saturday night. The fire caused the deaths of nine lives and an estimated property loss of $1,500,000.

LeRoy H. Stanton, E. J. Stanton and Son, Los Angeles, is back at his desk following a vacation spent in the Northwest.

Geo. Gerlinger, president of Willamette Valley Lumber Co., Dallas, Ore., spent several days in San Francisco on a business trip.

That group of lumbermen known as the Soracity Club around the San Francisco Bay area recently made their annual trip to the High Sierra. Included in the group were Clem Fraser, Loop Lumber and Mill Co., Alameda; Jerry Bonnington, WendlingNathan Co., San Francisco; Eddie Tietjen, Sudden and Christenson, San Francisco: Larue Woodson, Wheeler-Osgood Sales Corp., San Francisco; and Earle Johnson, Watsonville.

Fred Johnson, West Coast Screen Co., Los Angeles, recently returned from a business trip to the Northwest. He reports that W. P. Fuller and Co. are now distributors in Seattle, Tacoma, and Portland for their well known Hollywood combination screen door.

The annual meeting of the California Retail Lumbermen's Association will be held at the Hotel Del Monte on Monterey Peninsula. J. O. Handley, M. J. Murphy, Inc., Carmel, is chairman of the Convention Committee.

R. M. Morriss, of Chicago, president of the American Lumber and Treating Co., is a California visitor at the present time, dividing a couple of weeks between Los Angeles and San Francisco.

C.B. McElroy, comptroller of E. K. lVood Lumber Company, has been transferred from the San Francisco office to the Los Angeles office.

Effective last month, Lumbermen's Credit Association Inc., Chicago, publishers of the

Lumbermen's Red and Blue Book Service, will send Special Reports by air mail to all subscribers located outside the territory in which regular mail is delivered the following day. This new service means remarkably quick delivery of credit information.

Ambrose Halstead. Phoenix retail lumberman, has been visiting his father, J. D. Halstead, of the J. D. Halstead Lumber Co., Los Angeles.

Jack Dionne, publisher of California Lumber Merchant, will be the speaker at the regular weekly luncheon meeting of the San Francisco Lumberman's Club.

J. F. Slater, sales manager for Dant & Russell, Inc., Portland, spent a few days at the company's Los Angeles office. He traveled both ways by airplane.

N. J. Sorenson, Pacific Coast Manager of United States Plywood Co., Los Angeles, and Langford W. Smith, district manager at San Francisco, have returned from a business trip to Seattle. They visited the company's Douglas Fir plywood plant there.

Philippine mahogany and Philippine hardwood imports into the United States, consigned to all ports for the month of September, totaled 3,023,000 board feet, 2 per cent of which was logs. Total imports into the United States for the first nine months of the year are 2(193,000 board feet, 3 per cent being logs.

Collins to Produce New Flokeboord

"Collins Flakeboard" will be the trade name of a new flakeboard to be produced at the newly completed $2,000,000 Chester, California, plant of Collins Pine Company, one of the nation's oldest lumber firms.

Elmer R. Goudy, general manager of the company, said that exclusive use of selected Sierra softwoods will give the new Collins flakeboard an exceptional machineability and ultra-smooth faces and edges. The recently developed machinery used by the Collins company will produce a board with outstanding uniformity. Around-the-clock quality checks will ensure an unvarying standard of high quality.

The flakeboard will be made in thicknesses of from % to 7%-inches and in sheet sizes up to S-feet and l0-feet.

Seven years of market research and product study and over a year of testing in the Collins laboratory in Chester have preceded the flakeboard designed especially for use by manufacturers of furniture, cabinets, and similar products.

The highly automated plant will begin turning out the new flakeboard in October.

Reading of the trip to the Soviet Republic of two Northern California lumbermen, Wendell Robie of Auburn and LeRoy Miller of Sacramento, who were a part of a group of 25 industry and business executives visiting Russia this last summer, we are reminded of the following story. Two gentlemsn-lsf'5 call them Smith and Joneswere discussing Jones' projected visit to the land of the Iron Curtain.

Said Smith, "Aren't you a bit afraid of going beyond the Iron Curtain? I'll bet you $100 that you will somehow or other be picked up by the secret police for questioning during your stay."

"Nonsense," replied Jones. "I have no qualms at all. I'll take your bet, and expect to collect when I return to the U.S."

The gentlemen shook hands on the bet, and soon Jones departed by jet for Russia. He had been in Moscow only a few days

when he received the following cablegram from his friend, Smith. It read:

"If you can't get Khrushchev, shoot Molotov."

Education in forestry took another step forward with the appointment of Dr. Nicholas Muhlenberg, forest economist, to the University of California School of Forestry at Berkeley. Beginning this fall semester, he is teaching an undergraduate course and a graduate s€minar on forest economics.

Norman E. Bjorklund, Portland, has been promoted to Chief Forester, Industrial Forestry Association, announced W. D. Hagenstein, Executive Vice' President. Keith Petrie succeeds Bjorklund as District Forester. Hewill work with private forest landowners throughout the Columbia River area west of the Cascades to bring them into the IFA tree farm program and solve problems concerning public timber supply for the forest industry.

"With Petrie's addition to our staft, we now have 10 professional foresters working for a permanent timber supply for the Douglas Fir region," Hagenstein explained.

National Association of Home Builders and building materials manufacturers have

appointed Paul C. K. Smith, New York advertising executive, to direct its Housing Industry Promotional Operation. The program is designed to expand the housing market across the nation.

Roseville Lumber Company had a close call during the first part of September when a fire broke out near its log deck. Fortunately, damage was confined to a small amount of inventory through prompt action on the part of employees and the local fire department. The mill and planing mill were ttot damaged and continued operation after only a short interruption.

We were sad to learn that Lakeside Lumber Company lost its planing mill in a fire during early September. The rest of the plant, luckily, was saved from destruction and plans are currently underway to rebuild the planing mill.

Edo Lumber Company, San Carlos, has taken over the yard formerly operated by O'Neill Lumber Company, also in San Carlos. The O'Neill yard which is located on rail will be used as a storage yard by Edo Lumber.

After nearly 40 years in the lumber business, C. L. "Connie" Anderson has retired

frlcgic Words-lteoning Economy

"Strappack" "Bagpack" "Shakepack" are the magic words in NRLDA's IDEAS IN ACTION show, scheduled for November 4 through 7 at McCormick Place, Chicago.

Nor are the words as "far out" as they sound. They are, in fact, the essence of economy in mechanized loading and handling of lumber shipments as developed by the Hallinan Lumber Company of Portland, Oregon.

Every dealer unloading six cars per month cannot afford to miss this thought-provoking Modern Merchandising exhibit qThere full size units of packaged lumber, plus scale model yard unloading operations will be featured.

Economy keynotes the exhibit-economy of motion, plus a basic money economy, since pre-tallied, pre-banded paper-bagged lumber units can be unloaded for only l5c per thousand.

Hallinan Lumber Company will also demonstrate the palletizing of red cedar shakes and actual carloads and yard inveniories wiii be on display at the all day tour as planned bi NRLDA. The new fiqure 68 and proposed 6C flat car loads can be seen at a prominent Chicago yard,, along with "strappack,' lumber units shown as they arrive in double door box cars.

This "Idea in Action" is a must-see for those yards planning to remodel for mechanical handling, for Hallinan Lumbei Compiny, manufacturers and marketers, are considered outstanding in the fleid of packaged lumber shipment.

Miniature,"Bagpack" samples will be given away at the Hallinan booth, and "Miss Hallinan" will award an exciting grand prize at the show's conclusion.

"By Hook or Crook"

Do you ever use the term "by hook or by crook"? If you do, you. have b_een using an old forest.y .*p..s.ion. Forestry -experti explain it this way: In feudal times peasants were not peimitted to cut trees but had to request permission to secure for heating and cooking what limbs and twigs they could not reach by hook -or by crook. The hook was a pruning hook. The crook: a shepherd's crook.

Work will begin at once, according to Mr. Ilarvey, and should be completed in about a year.

Frederic R. Harris of Canada Limited, of Toronto, will handle engineering for the pier, while Giffels and Valley of Windsor will supervise the balance of the engineering.

Flintkote earlier this year signed an agreement with the province of Newfoundland permitting Flintkote under a 99-year renewable lease rights to develop gypsum deposits in the Flat Bay area having proven reserves of 45 million tons of gypsum and subsequently to an area comprising nearly 3,000 square miles.

Hordwood Plywood Industry RevisesCommerciol Stqndnrd C535

The Technical Committee of the Hardwood Plywood Institute has revised the Commercial Standard for hardwood plywood for the first time since 1956. The new standard applies to all hardwood produced as of March 31, 1961.

Commercial Standards are not set up by the government, but are written by interested groups, with the U.S. Department of Commerce, Commodity Standards Division acting as the clearing house and moderator for these groups. After these groups have agreed on its terms, the standard is distributed by the Department of Commerce, but enforced by the Industry.

It was through the Plywood Manufacturers Association, the predecessor of the HPI, in 1931, that the industry took its first steps toward a Commercial Standard for hardwood plywood. After acceptance by the distributors and users, it was promulgated as CS35-31. The "3l" stands for the year of promulgation.

Thenew Standard is designated as CS35-61. Special reprints carrying facsimiles

of HPI Labels are available free from the Hardwood Plywood Institute, P.O. Box 6246, Arlington 6, Virginia in single copies. In quantity the folder with CS35 sells for 25c. The Hardwood Plywood Institute is the national trade association of hardwood plywood manufacturers with 57 members 1ocated in 15 states from coast to coast. The Institute's office and laboratory is located in Arlington, Virginia. The folder includes the following information not contained in CS3561: 1. Four simple steps to install and finish hardwood plyryood. 2. Information on Strength-Weight Ratios, flexural strength properties, and bending properties of hardwood plywood. 3. Check list for specification writers.4. Illustrations of types of veneer arts and veneer figure types. 3. Illustrations of veneer matching including vertical butt and horizontal bookleaf, book, slip, random, diamond, reverse diamond, "V" herringbone, and four-way center and butt. 6. Facsimiles of HPI's Certificates and Labels.

GRADES

Grade descriptions of all species have been changed to more nearly conform to grade descriptions of the hardwood veneer and flush door industries. New grades are

Premium (l); Good (l); Sound (2); Utility (3); Backing (4), and Specialty (SP). The difference between Premium (1) and Good (1) is that in Premium grade when the face consists of more than one piece, it must be matched for color; in Good (1) grade the pieces need not be matched, but sharp contrast is not permitted.

The new Specialty grade inciudes plywood that does not conform to any of the other five grades such as architectural plywood, matched grain panels for special uses and special veneer selections. Both user and maker should agree in description and characteristics of the Specialty grade.

SIANDARD SIZES

Under standard sizes and thicknesses, 16" and 32" widths have been added and 30" and 4U' widths have been deleted. Under lengths 120" lengths have been added.

NEW CORE MATERIAT

For the first time, particle board and wood composition board and softwoods have been written into CS35-61 as a core material for hardwood plywood. Softwood plies must conform with their applicable plywood standard

folds face paper under the screwhead, and minimizes cutting. Added corrosion resistance is supplied by the cadmium coating.

Although outstanding results have been achieved with the original U.S.G. drywall screw, research and extensive field experiences have enabled the company to further improve the design of its exclusive product.

N.H.t.C.

The familiar initials H.LC. will become N.H.I.C. as a result of action taken by the Board of Dircetors of the Home Improvement Council at its July meeting.

On recommendation of the Council's new chairman, Carroll O'Rourke of the Weyerhaeuser Company, the "National" was added toits officibl name. O'Rourke emphasized that the name "National Home Improvement Council" more efiectively suggests the Council's role as "the only truly

national and industry-wide voice for the home improvement business."

In addition, the Board approved a new schedule of membership fees and plans for an intensive drive to broaden membership support. Under the new rates, the top fee for a national manufacturer's annual membership is $1,000. Fee for a typical dealer or contractor is $25.

Five leading manufacturers, among others, have renewed their N.H.I.C. membership to get the membership drive underway, O'Rourke revealed. They are: Georgia-Paci- fic Corp., Masonite Corp., Owens-Corning Fiberglas, United States Plywood Company and the Weyerhaeuser Company.

Other actions of the Board included reelection of James M. Lange, executive editor of Practical Builder magazine as a member of the Board, and the decision to seat presidents of all local N.H.I.C. chapters as national directors.

The HPI stamps may be withdralyn if a manufacturer fails to meet these requirements. The Institute has a strict policy for qualifying manufacturers for their use by plant inspection and sampling. HPI's plant inspector visits the manufacturing plant at any hour of the day or night unannounced. During his visit, the inspector carefully checks each manufacturing step and makes a report to the mill and to the HPI laboratory. The Institute's inspector sends the random plywood samples he has selected in the mill and in the warehouse to the HPI laboratory in Arlington, Virginia, for speedy glueline testing. Results are returned to the plant.

In order to assure the purchaser that he is getting hardwood plywood of the quality specified in CS35-61, producers may, in concert with HPI. issue certificates for each shipment or label each piece of plywood as conforming to CS35-61.

The HPI is your guarantee that the plywood is bonded as specified in the commercial standard 35-61. Look for this HPI Seal on your plywood panels. It is your assurance of dependable quality glueline.

For Fire Proteclion, Reod This

A completely revised edition of the NFPA standard dealing with fire safe practices for retail and wholesale lumber storage yard has just been issued by the National Fire Protection Association.

The safe practices recommended in this standard (NFPA No. 47) apply to: (a) retail lumber yards handling forest products and other building materials; (b) wholesale lumber storage yards including distribution, holding and trans-shipment areas; and (c) buildings in the above yards used for storage of forest products including buildings used for auxiliary operations.

The complete rewrite of this standard was done by the NFPA Sectional Committee on Storage of Forest Products chairmanned by W. G. Schultz of the Lumbermens Mutual Insurance Company, and was adopted at the recent annual meeting of the National Fire Protection Association.

Also adopted at the Association's annual meeting was partof another standard prepared by this committee. "Recommended Safe Practices for Outdoor Storage of Forest Products" (NFPA No. 46) is in two parts.

Part I-"Outdoor Storage of Lumber and Timber at Other than Retail or Wholesale Yards"-was adopted by the NFPA in 1960.

Joints Reploce Blocking on Roof, Woll Sheothing

Tongue and grooved joints that can eliminate blocking for edge support of plywood roof and wall sheathing have been developed by the Douglas Fir Plywood Association and will soon be "pp..rirrg on panels marketed by association members. A laboratory report giving performance details is available free from Te-chnical Department, Douglas Fir plywood Association, Tacoma 2. Wash.

The joints were developed in response to wide acceptance to a similar one perfected f.or 2.4.1., the l%-inch thick combination sub- floor and underlayment panel. The 2.4.1. joint eliminates the need for cross-blocking in floor installations and reduces framing require- ments to girders 4 feet on center. Similar refinements in wali and roof construction are expected with the new joints on fu-inch, ft-inch and fi-inch panels.

off eleven per cent from the preceding month and were one per cent below July a yeai ago. New orders received by themills during July 1961 decreased eight per cent fiom June and three p-er cent from the corresponding month in 1960.

For the first seven months of 1961, an estimated national production of 18,227,@0,000 board feet of lumber was 13 pef cent less than in the corresponding 196O period. Shipments of lumber to date in 1961 were ofi eight per cent from 1960, and new orders u'ere down five per cent.

DuringJuly 196I, shipments of softwood lumber were three pei ceni above the 2,128,000,000 board feet of production, while new orders were four per cent greater than the softwood outout. For hardwoods in Tulv 1961, production was estimated to be 381,000,000 boar<i feet, with-shipments six per cent more than the output and new orders one Per cent above production.

Total unfilled orders for lumber at the end of July were three per cent above year-ago levels. Gross mill stocks of lumbei on July 31, 1961, totaled 7,559,000,000 board feet, two per cent less than at the end of July 1960.

Increcrsed Soles qnd Eqrnings Promised U.S. Plywood Holders

Improved sales and earnings was the outlook ofiered to United States Plywood Corporation stockholders at their annual meeting in New York on September 21.

"We expect our total sales volume w;,ll approach the $300 million mark," said board chairman S. W. Antoville, who presided over the session held atop company headquarters in the Weldwood Building off Fifth Avenue on West 44th St.

Improved general economic conditions, expectation of easier mortgage financing-in the home improvement areaandgreatei emphasis on quality building materials .as "houslng becomes more and more a discretionary item with people, iather than a necessity" were cited as reasons for his optimism.

Foi its first fiscal quarter, terminating July 31, U. S. Plywood reported $72 million sales, and earnings_.of 96 cents a share as compared with 83 cents a year earlier.

Mr. Antoville informed the meeting that the upward trend had carried over into August to produce an all-time company record for one month of $26 million sales.

A hint as to how the company is accomplishing its objectives was included in the remarks of Gene C. Brewer, president.

"Greater emphasis," he said, "is being directed at producing and marketing specialty items-whether plywood or othermaterials-that come closer to the end user's requirements."

Eighty-five per cent of the huge building materials firm's research efforts are being concentrated in the product development area. he added. As examples he pointed to the upgrading of fir plywood with a line of exterior sidings the company brought to market a few seasons ago, and which have showed a steady and substantial sales increase despite the relatively soft new housing market.

Although individual housing has been one of the company's primary outlets, the firm is not overlooking predictions that a larger percentage of new housing.construction over the next decade will be in the multiple unit category.

"Our Glasweld, an exterior asbestos mineral panel offering the architect a wide range of permat-reni colors, is moving very well in the low-rise apartment market," he said.

Mr. Brer, ver also discussed an experimental application of the firm's products in a luxury resort project at Lake Tahoe, Nevada. He also announced the completion of plans to erect an eastern facilitv of the comDanv's Weldwood Structures Division, formeily Berkeley Piy#ood Company, Inc.. in New Jersey.

"Here we are looking particularly at the farm building market that has been estimated in excess of $700 million a year, as well as the production of component, prefabricated parts for light commercial construction," he explained.

Stockholders expressed their confidence by returning all officers and directors to their posts, and added Raymond T. Heilpern, corporation general counsel and secretary, to the board.

Childish Proyers

The little girl rvas visiting for the first time in a home where grace was said by the entire family in unison at the beginning of dinner. The little girl looked with open-eyed interest while the family prayed "give us this day our daily bread," but did not joinin. When prayer tvas ended the lady of the house said-"Edith, why didn't you pray for your daily bread?" "I don't need to," replied little Edith; "we buy our bread."

And then there was another little girl who attended the Episcopal Church for the first time. Up to that time her experience with praying was her little prayer beside her bed at night. So, when the congregation knelt in unison and bowed their hea.ds, she asked: "Mama, what are they doing?" "Hush, dear," said the mother; "they're going to say their prayers." "What !" exclaimed the little one; "with their clothes on?"

Definition of o Sowmill

There are undoubteillg numerous definitions of a sawmill bd one of the most eniogable of such is this one uritten bg some annonAnxous author and reprinted bg the Mgron C. Haines Wholesale Lumber Compang of Roseburg, Oregon,

A saamill is a pooilE anangeil colleciion of in^ailequate and, obsolete machinerg used to conoert Ings irrto saudust and. slabs. It is constantlg submerged in a series of cataclgsmic d,isasters of fluctuating intensitg, some of uhich haae disturbed seismographs as far east asWoonsocket. Owned bg one or more optimistic id,iots and operated under a thin gnise of respectabilitE known as "Lumber Com.panE," it prooides for a Godawful mnnber of families, all local, state and, federal gooemmentq seoeral machine shops and. a bookkeeper. Its onlg income is derioed from the sale of a bi-prod.uct of sorne odd,-shaped. pieces of roood knoun as lumber rohich is sold to people of questionable intellect-rnortIrJ in the miildle uestem part of the United States.

The gross income of ang sawmill is d.iaided approrimatelg as follou:s: Sirtg percent for logs or rau material. Thirtg percent for lnbor. Ten percent for maintenance. Point zero zero three percent for management. One can easilg see that this all adds up to some of the most beautiful cases of stomach ulcers in the historg of medical science. lt has been estimated bg good authoritg that if all the sausmills in Douglas Countg alone roere laid end to end it uould, be prettg honible and. there still uouldit be cars for shipment.

There are four basic tgpes of sawmills and I name them in the order of their m,ost flagrant stupidity.

7. Neu mills under construction----+tothing good can be said for this group.

2. Those usho made enough credits during the summer run to cold.-deck enough logs to run all ointer in order to ytag for them.

3. Those usho ran all summer and, expec't to run in the u;inter on logs hauled ooer a usirter road rohich theg aill neoer pag for.

4. Those uho sag to hell uith it and, take up truck farming.

Wood is ldeol for Kitchen Cqbinets

"Why Wood Is Best for Kitchen Cabinets" is the title of the latest in a series of colorfully illustrated booklets explaining how wood can be used to enhance the appearance and operating efficiency of the home. Issued by the National Lumber Manufacturers Association, the booklet points out that the modern kitchen must be both functional and attractive and that woodbecause it can be shaped so easily, comes in such a variety of grain patterns and colors, and fits so many decors so well-is the material best fitted to meet both objectives.

"The kitchen is probably altered more often than any other room in the house," the booklet adds. "Alterations become prohibitive in cost unless the cabinets and other fixed furniture in the room are of such material that they can be revamped, added to,

or otherwise changed. Wood is the only material with the versatility to accomplish such changes economically."

Wood cabinetry can be built to accommodate just about any set of dimensions, the booklet points out. As a result, it's generally easiest and most economical to use wood to convert small or oddly shaped spaces into storage. Often the difierential is so great that, if wood isn't used, the space goes to waste even though the homemaker's existing shelves and drawers are overloaded.

The low cost of wood cabinetry is due largely to the fact that it is built with simple tools. It is an ideal medium for the home handyman. His best source of supply-a local lumber dealer or architectural woodworking firm-is seldom very far way and is happy to provide advice as well as materials.

Wood possesses a number of other inherent advantages-such as superior sound and heat insulation-that increase its usefulness in the kitchen, the booklet explains. The slamming of a cupboard door is muted to a bare whisper; for example, the clatter of pots and pans, and the vibrations of highspeed mechanical equipment are also largely eliminated.

Because wood cabinetry is so popular, even stock units offer the buyer an unusually wide choice at modest prices.

For a free copy of "Why Wood Is Best for Kitchen Cabinets," write to the Wood Information Center, National Lumber Manufacturers Association, 1319 lSth Street, N.W., Washington 6, D. C. Earlier booklets in the series covering cabinetwork and built-ins, doors, windows, flooring, siding, paneling, framing, and sheathing are also available.

The Brand New Strait SPIRAL CORE DOOR is presently being produced in VOLUME at our El Monte plant for the western market at the rate of SIX doors per minute.

We have the exclusive contract for the KONSTANDT machine, which is made in Germany and produces the wood spirals that form the CORE of the modern, new fush doors automatically.

This new method of production has many desirable features including the elimination completely of the telegraphing of ribs, even if the doors are coated with a high gloss ffnish.

And the r$e of spiral core assures complete sealing, as all plywood door-skins are coated with glue and structurally better, a desired feature in areas of extlemc weather changes.

The next time you order STRAIT FLUSH DOORS examine them closely. YOU'LL SEE THE DIFFERENCE-THEY SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES-because nothing, absolutely nothing, is too good for our customers.
