A PRECIOUS GIFT WE CAN’T AFFORD TO SQUANDER

AS I SIT HERE writing this, flying home across the country from an industry event, I can’t shake the thought: should I even write this? Would it be easier to stay with safe topics—family, business, gratitude for this industry I love? Probably. But silence feels dishonest.

This week, a tragedy claimed the life of a young man, leaving his wife and children behind. On flights like this years ago, I’ve often wondered if I would make it home myself. That sobering thought makes me grateful for the freedoms I enjoy—freedoms made possible because others before us stood for ideals greater than themselves, sometimes at the cost of never coming home. That is the very essence of this experiment called the United States of America: imperfect people willing to sacrifice for something better.

And yet, what I see today doesn’t always resemble that America. We’re letting ourselves be divided by the loudest voices with the biggest megaphones. We’re told we’re enemies of one another, when in truth the things we’d truly die for—the things that unite us—are the same. Family. Safety. Opportunity. Hope. The noise convinces us otherwise, but we are not at war with each other unless we choose to be. Those who have not been to war should not ask for it.

When I’ve traveled beyond the well-marketed destinations, I’ve seen children playing in the dirt with joy that mirrors my own kids—yet with less food, less comfort, and far less certainty about tomorrow. I’ve seen parents looking at them with the same love I feel, but carrying a heavier burden of stress and doubt. That perspective reinforces how extraordinary this country really is, not just for us but for the world, as proof of what’s possible.

The America I know and love is still here, in the quiet strength of citizens who don’t make the headlines. It is in

the perseverance of people who build businesses, raise families, and do their best in tough conditions. It is in the belief that, even when we stumble, we are capable of more. Like my own children when they throw a tantrum, our country may act out of character at times, but the values underneath remain. I love my kids no less in those moments, and I believe we should love this country no less, even when it disappoints us.

It’s up to each of us to protect this gift. Not with louder arguments or deeper divisions, but with patience, humility and courage. Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about. Those words ring truer than ever. We cannot know the burdens others carry, but we can choose to ease them rather than add to them.

I know this industry is full of some of the most remarkable people I’ve ever met—people who have proven again and again that perseverance, grit and values make the impossible possible. If we can embody those same qualities in how we treat one another, then the America I love will not just endure—it will thrive.

I am grateful for the honor of serving you through these words, and grateful in advance for the grace of reading this with an open heart. May we remember that this country is a precious gift, bought with sacrifice, and best honored by how we live each day—with kindness, patience and gratitude not only for what we have, but for each other.

Thank you for the gift and honor of allowing me to be a part of this great industry, and for serving each of you in our own pursuit of something better.

CUSTOMER SNAPSHOT

3. Eco-friendliness. Hardwood companies have been promoting their green credentials for decades, yet even tighter environmental laws, like the U.S. Lacey Act and the EUDR (European Union Deforestation-free Regulation) and changes—including overseas—are transforming how. We’re seeing stricter traceability, higher compliance costs, and evolving sourcing and certification strategies.

“Sustainability and certifications are becoming more and more concerning as the EUDR and others try to get away from risk-based models that FSC, SFI, CSA and PEFC use,” notes Dallin Brooks, executive director of the National Hardwood Lumber Association. “They are moving to more stringent GPS maps, and blockchain that show the deforestation and forest degradation in real time, but have other major shortcomings. This will come to play in the USA if manufacturers and wholesalers distribute overseas.”

4. New technology. In an effort to increase efficiency in production and distribution, hardwood companies are investing in a host of new tech tools, including AI, IoT and predictive analytics.

Perhaps most noteworthy, AI grading is finally coming on stream for the hardwood industry, promising increased speed, accuracy, consistency and yields. However, since there’s less human involvement, lumber buyers should make sure they get what they ordered. (See related story on next page.)

5. Mass timber. While the vast majority of mass timber utilizes softwood lumber, an increasing number of hardwoods are finding use in “niche” applications, including recent multi-story, high-profile projects build of red

oak, white oak, and tulipwood.

According to the American Hardwood Export Council, using higher-strength hardwoods would require significantly less wood to produce a cross-laminated timber than with traditional softwoods. CLT comprised of softwood would require seven layers to achieve the strength of just five layers of hardwoods such as tulipwood. The same holds true for other types of engineered wood products, including glulams and laminated veneer lumber. BPD

GET THE LUMBER YOU ORDERED IN AN AGE OF AI GRADING

FOR MORE THAN a century, lumber buyers have relied on trained human graders to determine whether boards meet industry standards. Now, as artificial intelligence systems increasingly step in to assist with grading, buyers face a new challenge: how to make sure the lumber they receive lives up to the specs they ordered.

AI grading brings significant advantages. Cameras and sensors can scan lumber faster than the human eye. They can measure tiny defects with precision, and apply consistent rules without fatigue. Mills adopting AI often tout increased efficiency and uniformity. Still, buyers should remember that every grading system—human or machine— has limits. If you’re purchasing AI-graded lumber, here are steps to protect yourself and ensure quality.

1 Understand the System Being Used

Not all AI graders are the same. Some are designed to exactly match standards set by agencies such as the National Hardwood Lumber Association, while others are optimized for mill-specific tolerances or proprietary grading schemes. Ask suppliers which system they use, how

it’s calibrated, and how often it’s checked against certified human graders.

2 Request Transparency and Documentation

AI grading machines usually record data for every board they scan. Buyers can—and should—ask for access to reports that document the yield and defect breakdown. Detailed reports can give you confidence that the system is classifying lumber as ordered.

3 Ask About Human Oversight

The best operations use AI in tandem with human graders. Machines handle the bulk of the scanning, but trained inspectors audit results and intervene if something looks questionable. Confirm with your supplier that humans remain in the loop.

4 Verify With Spot Checks

Even with AI, buyers should continue to perform random inspections on incoming shipments. Spot checking a small percentage of the load helps verify that grading matches the order and provides a baseline for trust with the supplier.

5 Establish Clear Contracts

Make sure purchase agreements specify the grading rules being applied—whether NHLA, proprietary or otherwise—and what recourse you have if material arrives out of spec. AI grading may reduce disputes, but clear agreements still matter.

6 Build Relationships, Not Just Transactions

Ultimately, trust remains key. Work with mills and distributors who are transparent about their technology and willing to back up their claims. Buyers who build strong relationships with suppliers will have an easier time addressing any issues if discrepancies arise.

Bottom line: AI grading offers tremendous benefits for the lumber industry. But buyers who take a proactive approach—asking the right questions, checking the data, and maintaining clear expectations—can make sure that “AI graded” doesn’t mean “buyer beware,” but rather “better consistency and confidence.” BPD

DO IT BEST MARKS FIRST FALL MARKET WITH TRUE VALUE

DO IT BEST and True Value opened the doors to their first fully integrated Fall Market in Indianapolis, In., drawing record-breaking attendance. Thousands of independent dealers gathered for four days of buying, learning and networking—making it the largest independent event in the industry.

“This market is proof of what independents can achieve when two industry leaders come together with a shared vision,” said Dan Starr, CEO of Do it Best and True Value. “Our investments in branding, merchandising, and vendor partnerships are designed to help independent dealers grow bigger, stronger and faster in their communities.”

The show, held Sept. 5-8 at the Indiana Convention Center, showcased the combined strength of Do it Best and True Value. Dealers experienced firsthand the significant investments being made in branding, marketing and merchandising across both banners. New brand initiatives included expanded consumer marketing programs from Do it Best and the unveiling of the 2026 True Value national brand awareness campaign featuring the chain’s new celebrity spokesperson, actor Nick Offerman (Parks and Recreation).

“This market showcases our continued investment in building strong in-store experiences,” True Value president Dent Johnson said. “An exciting highlight is

the return of Destination True Value, a revitalized and reimagined store design featuring modern layouts, updated signage, and curated assortments. Dealers can walk through the refreshed concept in Assortment City on the market floor, gaining inspiration on how to elevate customer experiences, strengthen brand visibility and drive sales.”

Alongside True Value’s brand enhancements, Do it Best featured its award-winning store design solutions in Solutions in Action, together reinforcing a shared commitment to equipping independents with powerful branding tools that preserve their local identity while amplifying their market presence.

Outdoor living took center stage with the expansion of Broil King and Napoleon to the Do it Best and True Value assortments. The premium grilling brands bolster a “good, better, best” strategy, creating grilling destinations in each store. At the high-energy Power Preview, dealers saw these products in action—complete with live cooking, exclusive dating terms, and deep discounts.

“Our Fall Market also puts a big spotlight on lumber and building materials, a cornerstone of independent growth,” said Do it Best president Nick Talarico. “Our Do it Best and True Value dealers are exploring all the can’t-miss LBM VIP Deals. These are exclusive in-person

strengthening private label brands like Easy Care, Green Thumb, Best Look and more.”

Talarico continued, “In addition to products… over the next few years, our back-end systems, teams, catalogs and pricing strategies will come together as one to give you better buying power, better tools, and more consistency across the board.”

Do it Best is also rolling out three new marketing “easy buttons,” designed to help members quickly drive awareness, traffic and sales:

(1) The easy promo plan, allowing retailers to enroll in promo pricing and marketing for monthly promos all at one time.

(2) An ecommerce ignition kit—a total package solution including marketing vehicles, and store operations instructions to really get the ecommerce program off to a great start.

(3) The postcard power pack, which will send out two postcards a month on behalf of enrolled stores to their local communities. The program offers multiple options for postcards, so retailers can pick and choose which ones they think will work best for their audience.

In addition, True Value is getting a national ecommerce engine that can show member retailers’ inventory and pricing, provide the opportunity for it to be bought online, and allow customers to either pick up their purchases in store or have them shipped directly to them.

The market floor was packed with immersive displays, vendor showcases, and new product launches. From the Solutions in Action and Assortment City storefronts, and pro-focused planograms in Contractor Solutions, to over 800 Market-only VIP Deals, the event highlighted the breadth of opportunities available across both brands.

“With record-breaking attendance, a unified market floor, and an expanded lineup of vendor partnerships and programs, the first integrated Fall Market sets a powerful tone for the future of Do it Best and True Value,” Starr said. “As independent dealers explore new products, strategies and solutions, the message is clear: The combined strength of the company is fueling a new era of growth.” BPD

WHEN SHOULD WE GIVE THE PRICE?

WE GIVE OUR PRICE to our customers when they ask for it. We must structure our calls so that the customer does ask for our price.

Many sellers enter conversations with customers giving them every detail of their (the seller’s) proposal, including price, leaving the customer with nothing left to ask. The customer then says, “Thanks, I’ll get back to you.” We, as sellers, are left frustrated.

When we discuss the positives of our proposal, leaving price out, the customer who is interested is compelled to ask, “What’s your price?” From here, we are in a selling conversation. We are in a dialogue. Isn’t dialogue what we want with our customers?

As sellers we are not information dispensers. We are information sharers. We share information with customers who are willing to share their interest or desire with us. (I’ll share my price if you share some interest in my offering.)

In competitive markets, often the price we give is only used to keep our competition honest. We should only give prices to customers who are thinking of buying from us, not to customers who are “shopping our number.” We have nothing to hide, but we don’t need to advertise our price to non-customers who are going to take our price to our competitors and use it against us. We give price after building value

Seller: “John, I’ve got a great deal on sheathing today. We are selling it well and the market is moving in our favor. We feel the market is strong and have many customers who are buying.”

Buyer: “That sounds good. What is your price?”

We give price after establishing customer need

Seller: “John, we’ve got a great deal on sheathing. Are you needing any sheathing right now?”

Customer: “I may, what’s your price?”

Seller: “John, the price is the icing on the cake, but before we go into that, how much are you going to need in the next week or two?”

If the customer is king, then what are we?

Many sellers have the attitude that the customer is king. This attitude is fine. This tells us what the customer means to us. But what do we mean to the customer? What is our role in their mind? Are we just someone they are using to keep their favorite supplier honest? Is that the position we want to be in?

Absolutely not. We want to be an equal with our customers. We want to be their trusted advisors. We want to be kings also. We are in competitive markets. Holding price gives us the opportunity to compete. Holding price creates a “vital tension” that is good for a sales call. Giving price before interest has been shown eliminates the possibility of us even competing for the order.

Giving price to customer’s before they show interest makes selling a oneway street. It is our responsibility as sellers to make selling a two-way street. Holding price will help us do that.

When we are in the middle of building value or trying to establish need, many customers will interrupt and ask, “What’s your price?” Here are a few responses we can use to hold the

customer off until we have built value/ established need with our customers:

“That’s the good part, John, but let’s discuss the other points of this item first. You’re going to love the price.”

“That’s the icing on the cake.”

“You’re going to love the price, but let me tell you the details first and see if this item will work for you.”

“Do you need it?”

“The price might vary depending on when you need it to ship or how many you need. When do you need it to ship? How many do you need to buy?”

Some customers will become irritated when we don’t give them a price immediately. Holding the price can be a delicate move. But it is necessary. We need to deal with our customer’s irritation in a positive, confident way. Won’t we be irritated if we give a price and the customer says, “Thanks, I’ll let you know”?

The structure of a sales call is important. Holding price until our customer shows interest creates a structure that is more advantageous to us as sellers. It doesn’t guarantee victory, but it does guarantee we will be in more sales calls and fewer “thanks for the information” calls. BPD

MAKING EMPLOYEE DECISIONS

I SPEAK WITH clients every day who want to terminate an employee for poor performance, unacceptable attendance, or personality clashes. They are concerned, rightfully so, about the impacts on their business by either keeping an employee who is not meeting expectations or by letting them go in this litigious time. It can seem like a no-win situation, which can paralyze employers, leading to problems such as low productivity or sales and increased turnover of valuable employees.

I often hear, “It’s employment-at-will, right? Doesn’t that mean I can fire someone at any time for any reason?” While this is technically accurate, I remind them that it must be a non-discriminatory reason and that anyone can “sue-at-will” claiming to have been discriminated against, despite the facts of the case. If a claim is filed, the employer must be able to prove why they took the action and that it had nothing to do with the individual having a characteristic (such as race, color, religion, sex [including pregnancy, sexual orientation, and gender identity], national origin, age, disability, genetic information, and military or veteran status) protected under federal, state, or local law.

Making these employment decisions even more challenging is the heightened political debate and disagreement around discrimination and protected status, including:

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI): President Trump’s executive orders rescinding DEI programs in the federal government, along with the ongoing culture clash between DEI and “anti-woke” philosophies, have created distinct “sides” to each situation. Often, complex decisions are (fairly or unfairly) reduced to one characteristic, such as race or sex. The potential heightened sensitivity on either side of an adverse employment situation increases the likelihood that a terminated employee will sue for discrimination, even with legitimate factors behind the decision.

Reverse discrimination claims are increasingly being filed, pursued, and won by employees who argue that they were discriminated against based on a non-protected characteristic, claiming that they were adversely impacted or held to a higher standard because they do not claim a protected status. The recent unanimous United States Supreme Court decision in Ames v. Ohio Department of Youth Services clarified that Title VII does not impose a higher standard for people in majority groups and negated the additional requirement of “background circumstances” many lower courts have imposed upon reverse discrimination claims to succeed. Instead, Title VII focuses on individuals, not groups, so every case should be judged based on the individual circumstances.

At the end of the day, there is no guaranteed way to prevent an employee or applicant from filing a discrimination claim or lawsuit, regardless of the reason behind adverse employment action, nor how frivolous a claim might appear. The best thing an employer can do is build and gather evidence to support their defense throughout the process, in the hope of defending their decision if needed. This includes:

Developing accurate and comprehensive job descriptions, customized for every position, to define what is truly required in that position. Good job descriptions should not only include required job duties, experience, and/or education but should also include the essential requirements of the job such as the physical (i.e., weight to be lifted, standing, sitting, using hands or fingers, etc.), mental (i.e., ability to read, speak, or comprehend instructions in a specific language; perform math computations; or make analytical decisions), and environmental (i.e., outside, non-climate-controlled, hot, humid, cold, etc.) factors along with the specific expectations and frequency of each. These must be critical to the job duties of each

position and not just a wish list to make things easier for the company. Occasionally, certain jobs may also require that an employee possess a particular characteristic that is usually protected by law. These bona fide occupational qualifications (BFOQ) are permitted but only when necessary. For example, the requirement for only a male to be placed to serve as an attendant in a men’s locker room could be acceptable, as would requiring only a female to be placed in a women’s lounge. These situations are extremely limited, so they should be reviewed carefully and defined accurately.

Hiring well by using a practical and unbiased hiring process and training interviewers and selectors on compliant practices. Know who you are hiring by conducting thorough background checks, including criminal history checks, credit checks, and reference checks. Follow employment law to determine what information can be used to exclude a candidate from further consideration. Expand your insight into potential employees through valid behavioral assessments to ensure they have the profile ideal for success.

Documenting every employment action, positive or negative, minor or severe, first incident or last chance. While not needed to take an employment action, this documentation may be required as part of your defense if faced with a lawsuit and cannot be created after the fact. Whether using an evaluation as part of your regular performance review process or using warnings through your progressive discipline process, each document should show the ongoing conversation to define expectations,

Q. We have a remote workforce. One of our employees just moved to a different state. It does not impact their job performance or schedule, but is there anything we need to do?

A . Having remote employees does not negate an employer’s obligation to follow the laws of the state and city where their employees work. This means that not only do companies need to comply with regulations in the state where their corporate office is located, but they also need to follow those wherever an employee works, including from a home office and, in some cases, where they will be working for an extended period.

Since your employee has moved, you will need to enroll with their new state of residence to ensure that proper payroll taxes are withheld and unemployment records are maintained. You will also need to ensure your Workers’ Comp coverage is valid for that state. Since all states and some cities have unique employment laws, you also need to research applicable employment laws, such as breaks, paid and protected time off, leaves of absence, and wage-and-hour laws. If you do not have the capacity to expand into other states or do not want to be obligated to follow the more restrictive or beneficial laws of certain states, you can restrict where an employee is permitted to work from, either for a short or extended period of time. You can require them to get permission before working in a new location and reserve the right to deny such requests.

assess an employee compared to those expectations, explain how they need to improve while offering resources to help them do so, and detail the repercussions for their failure to improve. It should be detailed in writing and signed off by both the supervisor and the employee (or by a manager serving as a witness if the employee refuses to sign). Allowing the employee to add their comments is also a strong practice to prove the conversation took place.

Being consistent is critical. You always need to adjust your expectations or actions based on each situation. That said, you should also set the same or similar expectations for each person within the same or similar position. You need to treat all employees the same whether they are your favorite person or someone who drains your enthusiasm and patience. Be as consistent as possible but do not be so rigid as to not provide employees with the variation needed for them to accomplish their jobs given their circumstance.

While my general advice—consistency, documentation, and focusing on essential job requirements—has been the same over my 25 years as an HR consultant, current factors such as recent legal decisions, executive orders, government agency guidance, and our contentious and litigious society in general have made that advice even more critical for every company to follow every day for every employee. FOR THE BEST LUMBER, STICK WITH LOCAL

WHEN CUSTOMERS WALK into a lumberyard, what drives their choice? Do they grab what’s on sale, stick with something they’ve used before, or simply choose the pile closest to the checkout? At first glance, lumber might look interchangeable—but looks can be deceiving. Not all boards are created equal, and the differences matter more than most people realize.

The truth is simple: where your lumber comes from makes a huge difference. Choosing local, geographically relevant wood is not only better for performance, but also for your community, your wallet, and the planet.

Why “Geographically Relevant” Matters

Geographically relevant means buying local or regional products that support your area’s economy and environment. In lumber, this principle is especially powerful. Locally grown species are adapted to the climate, naturally durable, and often processed by mills that reinvest in the community.

Let’s take a closer look by comparing eastern white pine, a well-known species with deep roots in New England, to radiata pine, a fast-growing species imported from places like Chile and New Zealand. The contrast is striking. Ready?

The Growth Cycle

Eastern white pine is a tree of patience. It grows slowly and evenly, producing tight growth rings, a uniform grain, and natural resilience. Its strength and character come from nothing more than sun and rain, creating lumber with beauty and staying power.

Radiata pine, on the other hand, grows quickly and unevenly, resulting in weaker fibers, poor decay resistance, and wood with little natural character. The difference is clear the moment you put the two side by side.

The Carbon Footprint

Buying local lumber isn’t just a practical choice, it’s an environmental one. Locally grown pine only travels short distances to reach the mill, then the lumberyard, and then the jobsite. Less transportation means fewer trucks and ships pumping CO2 into the atmosphere.

Compare that to radiata pine, which often travels thousands of miles by sea and land before it ever reaches a customer. That journey leaves behind a carbon footprint the size of Bigfoot.

Meanwhile, most modern U.S. mills maximize sustainability by using every part of the tree for lumber, fuel, mulch or

other byproducts, ensuring nothing goes to waste. Supporting these mills keeps the environmental footprint low and the benefits local.

Durability and Performance

Eastern white pine has stood the test of time. Builders have trusted it for more than 300 years in applications ranging from homes and barns to trim and paneling. It naturally resists decay, holds up well against pests, and boasts a straight, strong grain. Plus, it’s gorgeous!

Radiata pine, in contrast, offers little natural resistance. To make it viable, it is sometimes chemically treated just to compete. Without those treatments, failure could happen much earlier than with real, naturally grown wood.

Safe and Sustainable

Another advantage of local lumber like eastern white pine is what it isn’t treated with. The wood is naturally resilient and requires no harsh chemicals. That makes it safer for the environment, for lumberyards and builders handling it, and for the families who will live with it in their homes.

Imported radiata often relies on chemical immersion to extend its lifespan, adding cost, complexity and risk.

Supporting Local Communities

Every board of local pine sold represents more than just a building material. It represents jobs in the woods, in the mills, in transportation, and in retail. It keeps dollars circulating in local economies instead of sending them overseas. That kind of impact has never been more important than it is today.

The Clear Choice

So, which lumber would you rather offer your customers: wood that’s durable, beautiful, and sustainable? Lumber that has been trusted for centuries, which supports local economies, which carries a fraction of the carbon footprint, and that can be easily customized and worked with? Or imported wood that arrives with environmental baggage?

When you and your customers choose lumber that’s geographically relevant, the benefits are immediate and lasting. You protect the planet from unnecessary carbon emissions, you invest in your community, and you deliver a product with proven performance.

At the end of the day, there isn’t much of a debate. For quality, sustainability, and local pride, the best choice is clear: stick with local. BPD

HOOD BUILDING HIGHER-TECH MISSISSIPPI SAWMILL

Hood Industries will invest $245 million upgrading its existing sawmill operations in Waynesboro, Ms., to enhance the facility’s capabilities.

Built in multiple phases on the existing site, the project will be executed in close collaboration between the Hood team, Comact and Piche to ensure the existing facility remains operational throughout the construction process. This phased approach is designed to keep production losses to a minimum, providing as little disruption to employees, timber suppliers and customers as possible.

Operations at the modernized mill are set to begin in early October 2026, after which demolition of the existing facility will commence.

“We have partnered with both Comact and Piche on a successful modernization project at our facility in Bogalusa, La.,” says Jay Galloway, president of Hood Industries. “As we began to explore our options for upgrading the Waynesboro facility it became obvious to continue the partnership with these two companies. Their technical expertise, collaborative approach, and proven ability to deliver cutting-edge and reliable solutions made them a natural fit as we continue to invest in the future of our operations.”

The Waynesboro facility will

feature a fully integrated sawmill provided by Comact along with two new continuous dual path kilns and a new gas burner installed on the existing continuous dry kiln will increase drying capacity and energy efficiency. The planer mill will be upgraded with lumber handling equipment from Piche to include a planer infeed system, trimmer and sorter line with a lumber stacker. In addition, Comact will provide a Miller planer and GradExpert system in the planer mill. Comact’s AI-powered Smart Vision tools will be integrated throughout the process to continuously monitor operations and optimize throughput.

Mississippi Development Authority is providing assistance through the Mississippi Flexible Tax Incentive, or MFLEX, program. MDA also is providing assistance for road and infrastructure improvements. Wayne County and AccelerateMS are assisting with the expansion, as well.

Based in Hattiesburg, Ms., Hood Industries operates wood manufacturing and distribution concerns, including two plywood and three lumber manufacturing plants and 23 specialty wood product distribution operations, located in 18 states serving the Northeast, Southeast, Midwest and Southwest U.S., employing more than 1,300 people.

NORTHERN CROSSARM CHANGES HANDS

Northern Crossarm Co., Chippewa Falls, Wi., has been sold after 103 years of Bischel family ownership.

Peder Anderson, a longtime employee with over 30 years of experience and who shares the same family values, has purchased the business from Pat Bischel, who is retiring.

Bishcel started helping out at the company at the age of 8, sweeping floors, picking up trash, and performing other light-duty jobs. From there, he had the opportunity to be a part of every aspect of the business.

“For the last 65 years, it is the only job I have had,” Bischel said. “When I first started with Northern Crossarm, we were involved in the manufacture and sale of wood crossarms to telephone and power companies. Eventually we became involved in the wood preservative industry. It has been an amazing experience, being part of a growing company in an exciting industry. I could not have asked for a better place to spend my career.”

A retirement party will be held for Bischel on Oct. 16 for customers, suppliers and friends.

COURT RULES FOR MOSO BAMBOO

The United States District Court for the District of Delaware has ruled in favor of MOSO North America, Inc. and MOSO International B.V. in a patent contempt case brought by Dasso International, Inc. and Easoon USA, LLC.

The court concluded that MOSO’s Bamboo Thermo and the redesigned Bamboo X-treme products, along with their manufacturing processes, are colorably different from the previously adjudicated infringing products and do not infringe the relevant claims of U.S. Patent 8,709,578. As a result, the court denied Easoon’s motion to hold MOSO in contempt.

To satisfy earlier patent infringement litigation brought by Dasso, MOSO agreed to modify its manufacturing process and product design. The decision affirms that MOSO’s modifications effectively addressed the prior findings, allowing the company to continue its operations without further legal impediments.

Brett Kelly, CEO of MOSO North America, Inc., expressed optimism following the ruling: “Now we can focus on selling bamboo building materials rather than these needless distractions.”

GENERATION 7: Kevin Hancock (center), sixth-generation owner of Hancock Lumber, Casco, Me., welcomed his daughters, Abby Doherty and Sydney Hillman, to the company’s board of directors.

FIRE STRIKES WEABER ON EVE OF LAYOFFS

Authorities are investigating a late-night fire Sept. 8 at Weaber Inc.’s sawmill and headquarters location in Lebanon County, Pa.

The company had filed a WARN notice in July at its nearby distribution center, indicating that 145 employees would be laid off from July 26 through Sept. 9. On Aug. 1, Weaber filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

Firefighters spent eight hours battling the fire well into the next day before they were able to get it under control.

The hardwood lumber and millwork manufacturer was founded in 1941.

VENERABLE MAINE YARD LIQUIDATED

Rathbun Lumber Co., Presque Isle, Me., has been shuttered and its assets sold at auction to help pay off creditors.

The nearly 80-year-old lumberyard quietly closed late in the spring after its property was foreclosed upon. Its equipment, inventory and fixtures were sold in a timed online auction that began on Aug. 17. The real estate and building went under the auction block on Sept. 8.

The business was run by the Rathbun family until 2016, when owner Alden Rathbun sold it to longtime employee James McLaughlin.

DO IT BEST TEAMS UP WITH TOOLBX

To stress its commitment to providing independent LBM dealers with innovative digital tools to support pro contractor customers, Do it Best is now offering exclusive pricing for Toolbx—a B2B solution designed to help contractors approve quotes, place orders, and pay their bills online.

Professional contractors account for over 60% of sales at independent lumberyards, and Do it Best is making this strategic move to help dealers capture even more of that revenue. Toolbx connects directly to each yard’s ERP, giving on-account customers instant access to invoices, statements, credits, and order history.

Toolbx users can filter transactions by job tag, approve change orders on their phones, and settle balances via ACH or credit card in seconds. Behind the scenes, Toolbx pulls a live aging report, creates one-click payment links, and triggers automated email or text reminders—features that have the ability to cut days-sales-outstanding by roughly 25%.

On the sales side, the Pro Digital Quote and Order platform pulls real-time pricing, stock levels, and lead times straight from each yard’s ERP, while a smart AI-powered search bar, trained on construction terminology, helps pros find items fast. Digital credit applications and esignature capability let dealers approve terms and lock in signed quotes with no paperwork required. A built-in platform messaging feature centralizes all text conversations in one place so any team member can respond, and also serves as a quick way to send payment reminders when staff review overdue accounts.

WESTLAKE ACE BUYS 2-UNIT KANSAS DEALER

Westlake Ace Hardware has agreed to acquire Olson’s Ace Hardware, a family-owned hardware retailer with two locations in Kansas—Coffeyville and Parsons. The deal is expected to close on Nov. 2.

Following the acquisition, the stores will be rebranded as Westlake Ace Hardware and remodeled later in 2026. The terms of the sale ensure a smooth transition, with the majority of current employees being retained and minimal disruption in day-to-day operations.

Charlie and Rosie Olson founded Olson’s Ace Hardware in 1956 in Parsons. Ben and Beth Ryan purchased the business in 2007. In 2019, Olson’s Ace added a second location in Coffeyville.

“Throughout our history, providing outstanding customer service has always been at the heart of what we do,” said Ben and Beth Ryan. “We make sure that every customer is taken care of, and our employees are the number one reason for that.”

They added, “Westlake Ace Hardware is the best choice for the next phase of Olson’s Ace because they will not only take care of our employees, but under their ownership, the stores will continue to prosper and make a meaningful impact on the communities we serve.”

SouthernPine.com

Westlake Ace has been part of the Ace Hardware Cooperative since 1959. From its headquarters in the Kansas City area, the company currently owns and operates more than 175 stores in 13 states. Westlake Ace is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Ace Retail Holdings, a division of Ace Hardware Corp.

MITER BRANDS CLOSING FLORIDA PLANTS

MITER Brands, Harrisburg, Pa., is consolidating its operations in Florida.

The window and door manufacturer will be closing its facility in Medley, Fl., in fourth quarter 2025 and in Hialeah, Fl., in first quarter 2025, while relocating production lines to other MITER plants in the state.

MITER will also be opening a new, advanced glass manufacturing plant in Pembroke Pines, Fl.

The Medley and Hialeah facilities were among those MITER acquired early last year from PGT Innovations.

The efforts are said to align with the company’s focus on efficiency, innovation, and long-term growth.

As part of the transition, MITER Brands will relocate production of its high-demand product lines to its other Florida facilities and sunset two product lines. This decision reflects the company’s ongoing efforts to streamline its offerings and focus on delivering market-preferred solutions that align with evolving customer needs and industry trends.

“By retiring certain product lines, our team is able to concentrate our resources on the products and technologies that offer the greatest value to our partners,” said Brian Covey, VP of sales for MITER Brands. “With this focus, we’ve made substantial investments in nearby facilities to ensure we maintain the highest quality standards, while continuing to deliver the exceptional value our customers expect.”

The new glass plant is expected to open in 2026 and will feature advanced glass manufacturing processes that will enable MITER Brands to build the next generation of residential window and door products.

Founded in 1947, MITER is a residential window and door producer offering a portfolio of window and door brands for new construction and replacement markets.

Traders Market 2025: An opportunity for connection

We’re just months away from gathering in Kansas City, Mo., for Traders Market 2025, and the excitement is building. Since its start in 1996, Traders Market has established itself as one of the premier events in the lumber and building materials industry—and this year will be no exception.

Traders Market isn’t just a meeting point—it’s where our industry advances. In a time of both opportunity and challenge, it’s more important than ever that we lean into what defines NAWLA: uniting the industry, not only during times of growth, but when it matters most.

Whether it’s your first Traders Market or your 20th, you can expect a week filled with innovation, networking and meaningful conversations. Building on feedback from members and past attendees, we’ve made important enhancements to the 2025 experience, with even more improvements already planned for 2026 and 2027. This year’s event features 12 hours of networking time on the tradeshow floor—that’s four extra hours to get business done—and new engaging activities including a biergarten and golf simulator.

Our commitment to continuous improvement means every year Traders Market delivers greater ROI: stronger connections

that translate into partnerships, richer content that fuels smarter strategies and a tradeshow floor designed to drive opportunities well beyond your time in Kansas City.

One of the highlights we’re looking forward to is Thursday’s featured educational session, “Innovating the Business: RealWorld Tools, Smarter Operations and Leading Through Change.” With insights from industry leaders Sarah Smith of Roseburg Forest Products, Carl Lamb of Snavely Forest Products and Henry German of DMSi, this session promises to deliver practical strategies for navigating today’s evolving business environment.

We’re also extending tradeshow floor hours this year—giving you more time to connect, explore and do business. With more than 200 exhibitors and 12 hours of floor time, you’ll have the chance to discover new products, share ideas with suppliers and customers and strengthen partnerships that drive our industry forward.

And let’s not forget the excitement of being in Kansas City—a city rich in culture, music and legendary food. Between sessions, you’ll have the chance to explore world-class jazz, vibrant neighborhoods and some of the best BBQ and breweries in the country. It’s in these moments—whether over coffee, at dinner or

while taking in the local flavor—that the most meaningful connections often happen. These informal conversations often spark the most valuable ideas and collaborations.

Contents NAWLA TRADERS

2025

As our industry continues to face shifting markets, regulatory changes and broader economic pressures, Traders Market is a timely opportunity to share insights, support one another and plan for the future. You’ll also have the chance to connect directly with NAWLA’s leadership team—our board, volunteers and staff—and share your feedback to help strengthen both this event and the value you receive as a member yearround.

Let’s make the most of the days ahead as we gather to celebrate successes, tackle shared challenges and invest in the

relationships that keep our industry strong.

I look forward to seeing you in Kansas City. If you have any questions before the event, please reach out to the NAWLA team at info@nawla.org.

Sincerely, Kyle Little Sherwood Lumber Corp.

The Montréal Wood Convention will take place from April 14 to 16, 2026, at the Fairmont The Queen Elizabeth in Montréal.

After seeing strong attendance numbers in 2025, the MWC team is preparing another three-day gathering in Montréal next year. Attendees can look forward to a trade show, informative conferences on important topics, keynote presentations, and plenty of chances to network. More details about the event will be released later this fall.

As Canada’s largest meeting for the wood products industry, the Montréal Wood Convention usually attracts around 1,100 participants from North America and beyond. The event has steadily expanded over the years, with its program and participating companies showcasing evolving market trends and developments in the wood sector.

Originally stemming from the Canadian Lumbermen’s Association Convention of 1908, it was re-launched in 2013 by four Eastern Canadian industry associations: the Maritime Lumber Bureau (MLB), Ontario Forest Industry Association (OFIA), Québec Forest Industry Council (QFIC), and Québec Wood Export Bureau (QWEB).

See you in Montréal!

Established in 1933, the Northeastern Lumber Manufacturers Association (NELMA) is the rules writing agency for eastern white pine lumber and the grading authority for the SPFs-grouping of species that includes the Eastern Spruces, Balsam Fir, and Red Pine.

NELMA is one of six agencies in the U.S. and Canada that publishes rules for lumber grading used by the industry. The association is a non-profit organization with member mills located in the Great Lakes and Northeastern regions that manufacture over 1.5 billion bd. ft. of lumber in construction and appearance product grades. NELMA’s staff includes 12 inspectors that provide quality control assistance to help ensure on-grade lumber is being sold in the marketplace. NELMA is a leading agency for export wood packaging certification and the marketing voice for the wood products industry in the Northeast and Great Lakes.

Go to www.nelma.org for an extensive library of resources that will assist in the sale and use of wood products manufactured by NELMA’s mills.

Rosboro’s service and support set us apart from other glulam producers. We have representatives in the field to work directly with you and your customers. Partap Forest Products is a primary manufacturer of Pacific Hemfir and western red cedar products. As a family-owned and operated business, Partap thrives on its commitment to product quality and customer satisfaction. Throughout our many years in business, we have invested in ourselves to better serve the needs of our customers in all product markets including but not limited to siding/fascia, decking, fencing, appearance grade timbers, export clears, and export dimensional products.

West Bay Forest Products

Since 1988, West Bay Forest Products has built our business on western red cedar. We’ve grown from a single remanufacturing operation to become a multi-faceted cedar supplier, and now own and operate two primary breakdown facilities along with two remanufacturing plants across the Pacific Northwest.

With the ability to cut our own logs, West Bay is able to better control our fiber supply, positioning us to oversee the entire manufacturing process right from first cut to order fulfillment. The result? Unmatched consistency, timely delivery, and a wide variety of tailored patterns and dimensions to give our customers improved flexibility in their cedar programs.

One of West Bay’s specialties are appearance grade cedar timbers. These timbers are highly sought after by distributors and builders for their exceptional beauty and versatility, and we do our part to develop timbers that can be used in a wide variety of indoor and outdoor applications.

West Bay bucks our logs to prioritize ideal timber lengths, enabling us to deliver premium tallies to our customers. Once cut, all timbers are end-waxed and packaged carefully to minimize iron-stain or other damage that could occur in transit or during manufacturing. The end result is a high-end timber delivered on time and in pristine condition.

The Industry’s Most Valuable Meeting Ground

Traders Market is the lumber industry’s most efficient, high-impact networking event. Why spend months chasing down the right connections when you can meet 1,200+ buyers, suppliers and decision-makers in just a few days!

species into an elegant material that meets the demands of both aesthetics and responsible sourcing.

Thermally modified hem-fir is not only aesthetically pleasing but also versatile. The thermal modification process deepens its color into a warm hue, reminiscent of western red cedar and high-end tropical hardwoods like ipé. Over time, it naturally adjusts to its environment, making it a perfect fit for modern design trends. The intense heat treatment alters hem-fir at the cellular level, making it resistant to rot, decay and infestation. This durability makes it ideal for various applications, from sunsoaked decks to storm-battered siding.

Thermally modified hem-fir is stable and perfect for areas with changing weather and humidity. The heat treatment reduces its tendency to absorb water, ensuring that the boards remain straight and reliable.

The Thermal Modification Process

The thermal modification process involves heating the wood at very high temperatures in an oxygen-starved environment. This process reduces moisture absorption, improves decay resistance, and offers long-lasting durability without chemicals.

We invite you to visit our booth 403 at NAWLA to learn more about Thermally Modified Hem-Fir and how it can benefit your projects. Stay tuned for more details!

Transform your lumber handling operations with Combilift Combilift, the material handling specialist, has been providing custom-made and space-saving solutions for over 27 years, prioritizing safety while enhancing productivity and efficiency.

The Combi-CSS (Container Slip Sheet), with a maximum capacity of 65,000 lbs., is designed for the fast (and safe!) loading and offloading of long products, such as lumber, into containers. The electro-hydraulically powered Combi-CSS can fully load a 40' container in under six minutes with just one operator. The load is moved into the container on a Hardox 500 steel sheet by our patented push-pull mechanism. Once the container is fully loaded, a hydraulic rear barrier gate, fixed to the end of the platform, secures the goods inside while the metal sheet

smoothly slides out during offloading, ensuring a seamless transition of materials without any risk of damage.

Combilift is renowned for its constant innovation, and one of the latest additions to the ever-growing electric forklift range is the CombiCB155E, a compact, multidirectional forklift that’s winning both industry awards and operator loyalty.

With a 15,500-lb. lifting capacity, the CB155E stands out as the most compact counterbalance forklift on the market. Its small footprint and sideways movement enable effortless navigation through tight spaces and narrow aisles, making it ideal for transporting long and bulky loads, such as lumber or wooden panels—a task that is challenging with traditional forklifts.

The spacious operator cab features floor-to-ceiling panoramic visibility, enhancing the operator’s safety and providing exceptional visibility. A notable highlight is the Auto Swivel Seat, which automatically rotates 15° to the left or right based on the forklift’s direction of travel. This significantly reduces strain during reversing maneuvers—a common source of operator fatigue and injury.

This model received the prestigious Ergonomic Innovation of the Year award at the UK Materials Handling Association Awards last September and has recently won the Red Dot Award for Product Design 2025, highlighting its dedication to exceptional design, performance and innovation.

Check out combilift.com and visit our booth at the Traders Market to see how Combilift can transform your wood and lumber handling operations!

Powell Valley Millwork, with two manufacturing sites located east of Lexington, Ky., was CMPC’s first acquisition in the U.S., serving as the foundation of our expanding presence in the North American market.

This makes CMPC the first manufacturer to offer both poplar and radiata pine products in the region.

With over 30 years of industry experience, Powell Valley Millwork has consistently excelled at crafting top-tier poplar mouldings and millwork for a diverse customer base. By combining CMPC’s global manufacturing capabilities with Powell Valley Millwork’s domestic production, we offer a broader range of products, streamlined logistics, and exceptional customer service—strengthening our commitment to partnerships across North America.

Hardel Mutual Plywood Corp. is celebrating 70 years as a cooperative in the plywood industry—the only cooperative plywood mill in the U.S. Since opening in 1952, Hardel has grown from the capability of making 12 different types of panels to now carrying over 1,000 different plywood products.

Its production is more than eight times of what it was then, and has more than doubled in the last seven years.

The company recently installed a new state-of-the-art press for Medium Density and High Density Overlays. The chrome platen overlay press is capable of producing the smoothest possible finishes in MDO and HDO, helping Hardel to maximize its product line.

Offering such a vast product line of over 1,000 different plywood product makes it easier for customers to mix loads. This saves them time and money by being able to buy all their plywood needs in one place. The company is like a “Super Market” for plywood. It also has the capability to build and customize panels specific to a customer’s needs.

As the country’s only cooperative plywood mill, Hardel has 124 working shareholders and consequently experiences very little turnover. Most employees have more than 15 to 20 years of experience. Hardel employees are highly experienced in the mill and have a strong sense of pride in the work they perform. They literally take ownership in their work.

Hardel continues to look to future growth and adapt where there is need in the plywood industry. That’s why Hardel has grown and evolved into one of the most diverse and state-of-the-art plywood mills in the U.S.

ROOTED IN EXCELLENCE. DRIVEN TO SERVE.

EXPO 2025 packed 243 exhibitors into an expansive 61,440 sq. ft. of display space. Booth sales for the next edition, EXPO 2027, open in June 2026, with attendance registration beginning in March 2027.

SFPA EXPO BIGGEST SINCE 2000

“EXPO 2025: Fine Tune Your Strategy.” That was the agenda for the 38th Forest Products Machinery & Equipment EXPO from Aug. 6-8 at the Music City Center in Nashville, and early feedback shows exhibitors and attendees alike were able to successfully collaborate to drive their operations forward.

“The Southern Forest Products Association hosting the Forest Products EXPO in Nashville for a second time continued to far surpass our expectations,” said Eric Gee, SFPA’s executive director. “Seeing and talking with so many members of the forest products industry was truly energizing. I’m beyond proud of our exhibiting companies, whose creativity and hard work transformed the exhibit hall into an outstanding hub of innovation, connection, and opportunity.”

The final floorplan topped out at 243 exhibiting companies, a record number of exhibitors since 2000, representing 185 product categories spread over 61,440 sq. ft. of machinery, innovation, and solutions to

meet with nearly 1,000 attendees. EXPO 2025 also welcomed 60 firsttime exhibitors.

Early survey responses from attendees were positive, with many lauding the location and Music City Center, the opportunities for networking with industry colleagues and meeting new vendors, and the variety of exhibits.

“Forest Products EXPO is a specialized trade show, and while attendance may have been down in 2025 after a near-record-breaking show in 2023 because of various economic conditions, it continues to attract the highest-quality decision-makers from sawmills throughout North America,” Gee said. “More than one-third of attendees at EXPO 2025 serve in a president and/or owner capacity, representing nearly 100 sawmills.”

Since 1950, Forest Products EXPO has provided a place for both hardwood and softwood sawmillers to gather, celebrate new technology, network, and learn about the industry’s latest machinery and

equipment. And as the industry and workplace evolve, so does EXPO, Gee said. “The SFPA and EXPO teams are always soliciting and reviewing feedback from exhibitors and attendees to ensure Forest Products remains the premier forest products industry event and that it provides plentiful opportunities for growth among that industry.”

The three-day show provided attendees with solutions for nearly every stage of manufacturing. From raw material handling to crane operations; metal detection and scanning technologies; log optimization; lumber drying, grading, sorting, packaging, and distribution; engineering and AI solutions.

During the event, Southern Forest Products Association announced the 2024 John Edgar Rhodes Sawmill Safety Excellence Awards during the Sawmill Safety Awards & Summit. For the fourth year in a row, at least seven mills received Sawmill Safety Awards with zero incidents among them.

EXPO 2025 was also the location for the inaugural SFPA Safety Summit, moderated by Dale Bracken with National Assessment, who is a management consultant and former consumer products division manager with the world’s largest pulp and paper maker.

Bracken led a conversation with 2024 Safety Awards recipients Vince Almond of Almond Brothers Lumber Co., Stephen Peskar of Weyerhaeuser, and Johnny Sauls of West Fraser. Topics covered all things safety, from discussing each mill’s safety culture, how they approach safety training and address safety issues to tactical strategies that helped them and their teams achieve zero incidents.

“In an industry where worker safety is paramount, achieving a record with no reportable incidents is truly remarkable,” Gee said.

“To be able to bring these safety leaders together to share expertise and help other mills improve safety cultures is an amazing opportunity for SFPA to deliver on its mission of being better, together so that all mills, members or not, can learn from each other and grow with safety at the forefront.”

Another first in 2025 was the SFPA Women’s Leadership Summit, held Aug. 7.

“We all know leadership has looked a certain way for a long time. But the truth is, we’re changing that with events such as the Women’s Leadership Summit,” Gee said. “We’re not waiting around for change. By showcasing successful women leaders, we’re not just clapping for achievements—we’re lighting the way for others to follow. We’re creating space for mentorship, for connection, and for the kind of career growth that breaks down old barriers.

Donna Whitaker, former vice president with Interfor and former board chair with SFPA, served as moderator as Dr. Heidi Adams, associate professor and Frank Merritt Endowed Professor of Forestry at Louisiana Tech University; Heidi Danbrook, sales manager with Gilbert, an SFPA associate member and EXPO 2025 exhibitor; and Kim Drew APR, president of Drew Public Relations discussed mentorship, education and advancing women in the forest products industry, sales and marketing excellence strategies, and strategic communications and public relations, respectively.

“This amazing panel didn’t just discuss theory,” Gee said. “They shared real-world strategies—what they’ve lived and experienced out there—and gave attendees inspiration, empowerment and practical tools to lead with confidence.”

SFPA posted recordings of the Safety and Women’s Leadership Summits on the association’s YouTube channel.

Registration for the next show—Expo 2027—is scheduled to open in March 2027. BPD

DERBY REBRANDS

TANDOSHAKE, ROLLS OUT DEALER EXPRESS PROGRAM

TandoShake, the original polymer shake on the market, pioneered over four decades ago, has been rebranded QCshake by parent company Derby Building Products.

While the name has been changed, QCshake’s performance and style will remain the same for its Hand Split, Rustic Cedar 9, RoughSawn Cedar Single & Dual, and Cape Cod Perfection products. And, to improve speed to market, a new QCshake Dealer Express program will launch in September.

“The name change will identify our five polymer shake products in the market,” said Ralph Bruno, CEO, Derby Building Products. “This rebranded line will continue to deliver the same durability and curb appeal they’ve always been known for—with a fresh look—and a new, easy way to get them into the hands of installers who have trusted these products for decades. That’s where QCshake Dealer Express comes in. All profiles, all colors, and all accessories are always in stock and will ship to the dealer within 48 hours. This program will simplify the entire process—from order entry to shipping.”

Launched in September, the QCshake Dealer Express program is based in Lexington, Ky. It features all five QCshake product lines and color options. With the program, installers order QCshake products through their local lumberyard. The yard then places an order with a Derby distributor, which triggers a direct shipment from Derby to the yard within 24 to 48 hours.

ACE HARDWARE FALL CONVENTION SHINES LIGHT ON STORE TRANSFORMATIONS

Taking place Aug. 12-14 in downtown Chicago, this year’s Ace Hardware fall convention brought together thousands of Ace retailers and vendors for the industry’s largest hardware event.

A highlight was the return of a full-scale, 10,000-sq. ft. Elevate3 Ace “Store-on-the-Floor” model, featuring expanded Power and BBQ brand destinations.

This show marked the one-year anniversary of introducing its Elevate3 Ace experiential store format. Unveiled at last year’s fall Convention, Elevate3 Ace reimagines the traditional hardware store by creating immersive brand experiences in four key areas: Paint, Power, Backyard & Barbecue, and Home Preservation, turning these sections into inviting destinations that make shopping easier and more inspiring.

The concept has since moved out of pilot mode and into full roll-out, with more than 130 Elevate3 Ace stores completed so far. The results speak volumes: these stores are growing +12% in sales and +10% in gross profit dollars compared to non-implementing stores.

“Elevate3 Ace is experiential retail wrapped in the servant-hearted humanity that’s made Ace famous,” said John Venhuizen, Ace president and CEO. “These stores let customers see, touch and try the best of Ace, while staying true to our mission of serving neighbors. A year in, they’re driving strong growth for our retailers and making Ace an even more valuable part of the communities we serve.”

Category highlights vs. non-implementing stores include:

ACE HARDWARE executive VP/chief growth officer John Surane kicked off the fall convention’s general session by stressing that Ace retailers are in the business of serving others.

• Power: +25% sales (Craftsman, DeWalt, EGO, Milwaukee, Stihl, Toro)

• BBQ: +22% sales (Big Green Egg, Blackstone, Traeger, Weber)

• Backyard: +6% sales (Lodge, Solo Stove, Stanley, YETI)

• Paint: +6% sales (Benjamin Moore, Clark+Kensington, Magnolia Home)

• Home Preservation: +8% sales (Scotts)

New Elevate3 Ace enhancements introduced a pilot

“Sun & Shade” department offering premium sunglasses from Costa, Native and Oakley, along with lifestyle apparel, hydration products, and outdoor audio equipment. Also new was a refreshed lighting aisle with adjustable white lighting in bulbs and fixtures, as well as an Ace-exclusive Kohler faucet, further reinforcing Ace’s commitment to delivering a distinctive in-store experience for both retailers and customers.

Elevate3 Ace will continue to transform new and existing Ace Hardware stores over the next several years, supported with a $1 billion investment.

ACE RETAIL HOLDINGS TO REMODEL 80+ STORES OVER NEXT FIVE YEARS

Ace Retail Holdings has launched a multi-year initiative to remodel its stores with a new brand-centric design aimed at creating an enhanced hardware shopping experience. The company, which owns Westlake Ace Hardware and Great Lakes Ace Hardware, among other retail hardware brands, plans to make a significant investment in the initiative over the next five years.

Ace Retail Holdings’ goal is to install the new store concept in approximately 20 locations annually. The Great Lakes Ace in Shelby Township, Mi., was remodeled in 2024 as part of the successful pilot of the Elevate3 concept. The first Westlake Ace store to be remodeled is located in Raleigh, N.C.

“The new Elevate3 Ace store concept delivers a game-changing, transformative, and memorable retail experience,” said Joe Jeffries, president and CEO of Ace Retail Holdings. “In addition to providing a fresh showcase for the Ace Helpful Promise, the design allows us to better serve our customers and neighbors by creating distinctive spaces that elevate and showcase best-in-class brands across the store with feature presentations in BBQ and Power.”

BBQ Department

In the new layout, fuels and accessories will be merchandised alongside branded grill offerings to ensure customers leave with everything they need for an unforgettable outdoor cooking experience. BBQ brands such as Blackstone, Weber, Traeger and Big Green Egg will be prominently featured in an inspiring “showroom” environment that is fresh, inviting and uniquely Ace. Store associates will be equipped with a specialized Mobile Grilling Digital Assistant, a smart tool that helps them confidently match customers to the perfect grill for their needs.

Power Tools and Outdoor Power

Brand name is the leading decision driver for consumers when it comes to purchasing power tools and outdoor power equipment. They also increasingly prefer rechargeable (and in some cases, interchangeable) battery power across a wide swath of products such as power tools, outdoor power equipment, and lifestyle accessories. Those insights were instrumental in the new design of the Power Tools and Outdoor Power department.

Home Preservation and Paint

Fasteners, hand tools, and paint are the lifeblood of any hardware store and must-haves for customers to complete their projects. The new store design takes that into account but optimizes and streamlines the product assortment, creating an easier and more productive shopping experience. The Paint Studio will be centrally located, featuring top brands like Benjamin Moore and Magnolia Home by Joanna Gaines, and will continue to offer expert color matching and paint mixing services.

Select Westlake Ace and Great Lakes Ace locations will feature The Kitchen Connection and Apparel Shops as store-within-a-store concepts. The Kitchen Connection will showcase gourmet foods (with frequent samplings and seasonal tastings), and cookware, kitchen utensils, and linens from such leading brands as Joseph Joseph, Lodge, Now Designs, OXO, USA bakeware, and Soda Stream. The Apparel Shops will offer popular workwear and lifestyle clothing brands, including Carhartt and Ariat.

Ace Retail Holdings operates over 250 hardware stores throughout North America, doing business under the Westlake Ace Hardware, Great Lakes Ace Hardware, and other store brands. A wholly-owned division of Ace Hardware Corp., the company is headquartered in the Kansas City area. Westlake Ace has more than 170 stores in 13 states. Great Lakes Ace Hardware has more than 70 stores in four states.

REVAMPED BBQ SHOWROOMS are coming to 80+ Ace Hardware stores.

FBMA TO COMP DEALERS

FLORIDA BUILDING Material Alliance made a groundbreaking announcement during its recent annual expo, unveiling a new membership structure that allows retail dealers to join the association for free.

Effective immediately, LBM dealers with a brick-andmortar location in Florida can be members without charge if they register on the FBMA website, are registered with SunBiz, have a website, and sell 51% or more to the public. FBMA will also offer dealers a paid level that carries additional benefits for $195 a year.

FBMA said the drastic change comes after years of trying discounts, extra “benefits,” mail campaigns, and email blasts. Indeed, the recent expo appeared to draw more associate members than retailers.

As FBMA explained, “If we’re fighting for retail dealers, we’re fighting for all retail dealers. Associates join FBMA

because they want access to retail dealers. By growing this membership base, we create more value for every member.”

Associate members will still have to pay dues. More membership levels have also been added (Auxiliary, Retired Professionals, and Collaborating Associations).

The expo was held Aug. 21-22 in Lake Buena Vista, Fl. During the event, Betsy Bagwell of Bagwell Lumber, Avon Park, was elected to the FBMA Hall of Fame. H. Dan Pugh of Residential Building Supply, DeBary, received the Charles Harnden Industry Service Award.

The most eye-catching displays took home Best Booth awards. Among single-booth exhibitors, Global Fireproof Solutions won 1st place; All Points, 2nd place; and Home Aid, 3rd place. For multiple booths, Simpson Strong-Tie won 1st place; Great Southern/YellaWood, 2nd place; and Ponderosa Wood, 3rd place.

F BMA’S 2025 Building Products Expo featured a full slate of fascinating presenters, including [1] Jeff Tweten, discussing “If You Want to Grow Your Business, You Need to Get Your RAS in Gear.” [2] Executive industry panel discussion—with moderator Don Magruder and (l-r) Jim Kerkvliet, Shyam K. MASSIVE SHOWING FOR NELMA MEETING

NORTHEASTERN Lumber Manufacturers Association’s recent annual meeting enjoyed its strongest attendance in over 25 years.

Themed “NELMA Family Reunion” and held Sept. 10-12 at Hyatt’s The Lodge at Spruce Peak Stowe, Vt., the 92nd annual meeting brought networking opportunities galore, along with informative presentations, exhibits and golf scramble. Speakers included Forest Economic Advisors’ Paul Jannke, with a forest products economic forecast; BPD publisher Patrick Adams, discussing substitute materials’ challenges to wood; Madera Wood Tech’s Russell Edgar, sharing NELMA’s five-year SPFs lumber testing results; and Alden Robbins and Ryan Flom, with a Softwood Lumber Board update.

To capitalize on the high membership crossover, North American Wholesale Lumber Association held its Northeast regional meeting during day two of the NELMA meeting.

PURLIN SPLICE CONNECTOR

Designed to simplify roof purlin connections, the PFPS24 splice connector from Simpson Strong-Tie eliminates the need to offset and overlap purlins, keeping them in line along the entire length of a gable roof.

The connector’s design enhances purlin and roof panel installation efficiency in post-frame construction and improves fastener alignment. It also reduces material costs by allowing the use of shorter purlin stock.

With minimum and maximum fastener options, it offers value engineering opportunities depending on load requirements; a minimum fastener pattern can reduce installed fasteners by up to four per connector. They can also be doubled up for increased capacity.

In addition, by keeping purlins aligned, the connector eliminates staggered roof panel fasteners, reducing risk of misinstallation.
