Home Fixup lncenlive

/^lNE OF THE major problems in getting more \,t people interested in home improvement for their own homes is that they lack motivation to spend all that money fixing up the kitchen or add' ing another room. A recent pioposal by John R. Livingston before the National Home Improvement Council came up with that dandiest of all incentives money.

We think that incisive thinking is needed to get the home improvement business off its heels and on the run. Home improvement, for all its present millions of dollars spent, still has only scratched the surface of its potential.

The idea is to ofier the homeowner a tax credit if he fixes up his house. Something he can take off his income tax. Livingston called it a "homeowner inveshent tax credit." Another possibility he men' tioned was an allowance for depreciation of the homen as landlords do with apartnents and homes they renL

Under the present laws the man who rents out property has an advantage over Harry Homeowner. Real estate taxes and interest paid for money invested in your property can be deducted by ,both a landlord and a homeowner. The amount of this tax credit is the same for both depending on income.

But the difference begins when the matter concerned is maintenance, repair and depreciation. The landlord can deduct (tax credit) these from his taxes, but the homeowner cannot. So it pays the landlord to keep up his place and it also helps him keep down his costs and his tenants' cost by charging lower rents than he could without this advantaoe,

The old saw about renting-that all you'll have after 20 years is a handful of receipts-is true. We believe firmly in the great American dream of €veryone being able to own his own home, And we also believe that som, ething ought to be

done so that once the homeowner buys he is able to keep the house in good shape.

The figures on home maintenance and repair point out rather starkly the need for incentives to get the public improvement and repair-minded. Last year $12 billion was spent. Plenty of money you say? Sure, but divide that 'by 6O million homes and it's only $200 per year. Not enough to main' tain and improveo that's for sure. But the real picture is seen by further studies which show that 43 percent, or almost half, spend less than $100 per year to keep up tleir homes. Many spend nothing.

The case for a tax credit to help along business and the home owner in the vital job of keeping our nation's homes in good repair is a strong one and one that we endorse. While details will difrer on the exact route to take. the direction is clear. And the need immediate.

Contact your association and/or your congresspan and request that the necessary steps be taken to get this idea in motion.

It's Where you Find lt

Good ideas on how to make more money through promoting home improvement are apt to pop up anywhere.

A case in point is a recent missive from (of all people) Postmaster General Lawrence F. O'Brien, who declared May 16 through 2l as "Mailbox Improvement Week." Well, why not. It's legal, and who knows, it might even be the starting point of doing over the whole place.

The Postmaster General declared with straight face that they hope to promote the best possible appearance for the ten million rural and seven million city mailboxes. You can tie in with the First Lady and the President's efforts to beautify the nation by painting, putting flowerboxes around, and just generally sprucing up the old mailbox, O'Brien concluded.

nNE FINE SPRING day recently. we v amhled over lo Sausalito to see Bob Cehring, owner of Service Lumber Co., to get a little dope and a few pictures of his new four acre yard located 17 miles north at a sleepy little town called Black Point (honest, look on your map-it's along the highway connecting Novato to Vallejoi.

Bob Gehring is a fine lumberman and husinessman who is not iust satisfied bv "being where the action ii." Bob wants to be where the o'action is going to be."

But a funny thing happened as we started to write this about Service Lumber's move to Black Point. Digging into our trusty re{erence file {or a little additional background material, \r,(' came upon this sterling quote, dateline April 16. 1955 (exactly 1l years ago) :

"More and mort. we have come to believe that Marin County will soon be the

55Be Where the Action is GOING to be tt

hub of the whole Bay Area,o' Gehring explained. "That fact, and the fact that we now have more room and considerably better operating adlantages, were the main reasons that motivated our move."

This was written as part oI a CLXI spread covering the relocation of Service Lumber Co. at Sausalito after ll years of operation at 255 Bayshore Bouler, ard, San Francisco.

Now, exactly another Il years later, we still couldn't explain Gehring's latest move hetter. Southern Marin County has filled up and Boh has again moved his operation to "where the action is going to be."

However. Sausalito and southern Marin County liusiness will not suffer. Service Lumber's headquarters will remain at 3030 Bridgeway with Bob, olfice manager Harrf Hill. salesmanager Bob Strahle, and Gehring's son (would you believe Bob?) hold(Continued, on Page 66)

SERVICE TUMBER'S Sausalito command oost (1) at 3030 Bridgeway is where you'll find salesmanager Bob Strahle, owner Bob Gehrrng and office manaser Harry Hill. Strahle is a graduate of the old Smlth Lumber Co. betore joining Gehring and Hill when Service was first established. Service is a LMA member of long standing and Gehring is currently servrng on the association board. Service Lumber's new Black Point yard (2) is located iust off Hiehwav 37 at Grandview Avenue and Harbor Road. The-four-acre spread is completely graded and is served with a

five-car spur. (3) Are these guys lumbermen? You better believe it! This is Tom Gehring and George Krings who run the new Black Point operation. Diy shed (4) is all metal and adjoining office is Gehring's favorite building material . . -wood. Second floior of office will soon be converted into meetins room. Service Lumber has some pickup trade (5), but here again the products are strictly lumber, plywood, mouldlngs and heavy building materials. Thioirghout his 22 years in business, Gehring has concentrated on the builder. Interestingly, Rolando Lumber in

San Francisco, which Bob managed before starting Service, has successfully operated in a similar manner for a half decade. And if you happen to be out at Black Point about lunch time. try the historic Black Point Inn (6) right next to 56rvice Lumber. 0riginally established during the 1860's as a stagecoach stop, the Inn and Service's new yard appear to be just about in the center of "where the action is going to be." (7) This is a lumberyard, and no foolin'. Gehring caters exclusively to the contractor trade including old S.F. builder customers.

Mother Nature puts her best into it. But Palco improves it with a series of manufacturing processes to produce a superior product-"palco Architectural Quality Redwood." One is "taper sawing." Logs are sawn parallel to the bark, producing straight-grained lumber-stronger, more stable, and capable of the finest machining. Many other steps are taken, too, to give you

important "extras" in every shipment of "Palco Architectural Quality Redwood." And at competitive prices. Why settle for less?

lirif'1g9,,i DtAtER 0E0RGE CALLAWAY (uooer left) demonstrates Drift Log fences, a new product developed at C&E, shown n use at center. Manufacture of pallets (upper right) is another big source of income for the yard. "Red barn" color scheme (center left) attracts attention of passers-by. Wood preservative treatment and staining is another side'line of ihe yard. Jack Russi (center) demonstrates dip tank operatior. Linrited showroom space is overcorne through the use of compact displays, such as ihe Clopay Door Center (center right) and Alax hardware display (lower left), demonstrated by Dale Fahndrich.

putting up their first building they were joined by Jack Russi, a youngster who had formerly worked with Callaway at the Hammond yard. Russi is now a stockholder in the firm, which has since incorporated. EIse retired from active operation of the firm several years ago.

Capitalized at $35,000, the company had been in operation only one month when their accounts receivable exceeded their capitalization. A bank loan provided some badly-needed working capital.

"The payroll in those lean days was just whatever it took to meet household expenses,t' 'Callaway temembered. One entry in the firm's books during those first months listed "salary . . $13 (groceries)."

ttW'e've come a long way since then," the dealer continued. "This year we're shooting for the $l million mark in gross sales." The firm serves a marketing area that has ex. panded to a population of 150,000.

The Roman philosopher Utica ofiered an observation that aptly describes the C&E operation. He said, "Economy is in itself a great source of revenue."

Nothing is wasted at the yard, evidenced by the always-empty scrap bin. Warped and checked lumber is cut up and sold as dunnage to industrial customers. Cut-ofis are sawed up into stakes and sold to a local paving company. Scrap lumber and other waste is included in the manufacture of pallets, a sideline that has developed into a source of steady income.

"These are primarily salvage operations, but when you're totalling figures at the end of the year every little bit helps," says Callaway.

A big source of revenue is provided by a new product which is manufactured from lodgepole pine, a weed species fourrd in thick growths in Idaho and Montana. The species has litde commercial value.

Callawan who had fornerly lived in Idaho, hit on the idea of using the trees tq. make rail fences. Since the natural bole of the tree could be used, all that was neces-' sary was to cut them down and debark them.

,Callaway decided to buy a carload of tle pine trees and try to sell them for fencing. He called on Jack Russi to design a machine to dowel the ends and drill the posts. .,,.; Jack took his ideas to a local welder who put the machine together. , lj

Larger trees are drilled and used as the fence posts. Medium ones are doweled for the rails, and small ones are sold as treo stakes, which customers use as supports for' ..t young trees.

Last year, C&E sold eight carloads of the lodgepole pine, which they merchandise as ".,; Driftwood Rail Fences. Their marketing area for the product now extends from San Diego to San Francisco, and they eventually plan to try national distribution. Next year tlrey expect to sell 12 carloads.

All the fencing rnaterials and tree stakes are dipped in a Kenite preservative treating tank, which turns the wood a rustic brown.

The treating operation represents another direction in which the firm has diversified. : They do a booming business in custom ;l treating and staining.

Now in their 13th yearo C&E has 11 employeeso half of whom are stockholders ini the corporation. A healthy profit-sharing and retirement plan makes for a well-satis-, fied group of workers.

OU'LL SPEND many evenings looking at house plans before you locate one with more outstanding characteristics than the one illustrated here.

The exquisite rustic ranch exterior results from a symphony of such features as attractive diamond pane windows; the exlension of the main house roof past the bay at the front o{ the bedroom-bath wing; the use of corbels and shutters at the bay; the used brick planters and chimney and the repetition of the shutter design on the garage door.

Most of the 'outdoor soil can be washed ofi at the service bath before it can be brought into the house-a great worksaver for any homemaker. The family bath is in the bedroom wing as well as the master bedroom private bath. Both of these baths have pullman lavatories with an abundance of storage.

The kitchen has absolutely everything, including a very generous-sized dining area. An unusual extra is the table-or desk-with overhead cabinets that partially separate the kitchen from the family room.

The laundry as well as broom and pantry closets are in the service.

Outdoor living has been fully provided at the rear of the home where utmost privacy is assured. Sliding glass doors open to the huge patio from the family room, living room and master bedroom. The roof projects seven feet past the rear wall of the familyJiving rooms. This has been accomplished without the necessity of using posts.

This compact four-bedroom home proves that comfortable and gracious living depends more on thoughtful planning than it does on the size of the home.

The bedrooms, with their multitude of wardrobes, are zoned for privacy and quietness. They are completely separated from the remainder of the home bv the hall and a wardrobe.

Get In On Home lmprovement Month

It/fAY has been named "\ational Home lvL lmprovement ]lonth" and even now. during May, it is not too late to take step-* to promote the event. Remember, if you can once get your customers interested in improving their homes. it can turn into yeararound, big ticket business for you.

Home owners are expected to spend in excess of $f3l2 billion fixing up the old homestead this year, according to remodeling experts' estimates. Though many dealers are now enjoying their slice of this cake, many are not. Use this spring promotion to

either get in on the potential or expand your current volume of home remodeling husiness.

Following below are some of the steps you can take to help spur interest in home improvement. Any or all will be helpful, hut of course, the more you can get accomplished, the more interest will be created and in turn the more potential customers witl be developed.

(I) Check to see if your governor or city mayor has issued a National Home Improvement Month proclamation. NHIC has

requested proclamations from governors of all the states and mayors of the fifty leading cities in the nation. Response has been excellent. NHIC reports.

(2j If no proclamation has been made. prepare a proclamation and take it directly to your city mayor. In some instances, it might be better to join with other members in your community-bankers, other dealers, utilities, contractors-and request your mayor's endorsement. No matter what the size of your town, it would not be wasted effort to request the proclamation be made.

(3) Once the proclamation has been issued, then follow-up by contacting your local newspaper editor for publicity and possible editorial comments.

(4) Request public service announcements to be aired over the local radio and tclevision stations. See the station managers about your request.

(5) Utilize the proclamation in your advertising. Develop promotional materials such as (a) inexpensive lea{lets calling attention to the Month, distributed through Itanks and neighlrorhood stores. or mailed directly to your customer; (b) posters, signs and in-store displays; (c) door prizes can he given away daily, weekly or on special days-days that normally are slow; (d) clip out money-saving coupons in your newspaper advertising are worthwhile. LIse as many variations of this proven theme as you can-offer cash reductions on particular items or offer additional men.handise as a bonus if the pr,rrchaser spends a certain amount.

(6) Special sales will not only bring in your steady customers, but will open your doors to new buyers.

(7) Ask for tie-in material from your manufacturer representatives.

(8) Work closely with local lending institutions, utilize civic organizations and others in your community involved in home improvement and community fix-up pro€ilams.

(9) Sponsor "how to" programs for the do-it-yourself customer.

(I0) Utilize other promotional methods to capitalize on National Home Improvement lVlonth; such as remodeling model homes, home improvement idea libraries, home improvement schools, home improvement contests, high school class projects, etc.

The promotion is sponsored nationally by {our national trade associations whose members are closely associated with the remodeling market. They are the National Lumber and Buildins Material Dealers Association; National lssociation of Home Builders; National Established Repair, Service and Improvement Contractors Association, and National Home Improvement Council-originators and sponsors of the nationwide promotion.

N EVERY WAY the March Management Development Seminar by WRLA was a notable success! The fifth straight annual afiair of its kind, this five-day seminar produced some firsts:

It was the first cooperative affair with the Green River Community College in Auburn, Washington, a two-year school anxious to work with the association in educational efforts.

Faculty, distributive educational administrators, WRLA staff and the seminar participants hammered out the initial steps of a short- and long-range program of industry training. This will be piloted at the Auburn College and then be made available to all similar community colleges in the Western's four-state region. comprehensive educational effort

consists of four primary categories de' signed to meet the retail building material industry's urgent training needs:

( I ) Attract and train young men and women. A two-year curriculum of basic classroom industry orienta' tion coupled with 12-20 hours per week in "trainee" lumber and building material yards nearby, all coordinated for maximum results. A degree will be offered at the close of the two-year Period'

(2) Upgrade present employees. This to be accomplished (a) through the availability of once-a'week three-hour evening industry'sponsored training and (b) through a tuition refund €oncept for at' tendance at distributive educa' tional offerings and (c) through an individual company training program sponsored and checked by the association.

(3) Develop management replacement and improved assistants. This is to be the focal point of specialized management development.

(4) Executive Conference, generally of a weekend nature, with industrY and other successful business resource.

The Western's committee on education will meet this month to engineer the final details for implementation. While this takes time and continuing refinement, we feel that we are now on the high road to sucEess.

This is truly a 'opeople" business and we are elated at the prospect of this program!

Here's Hqwoii

TYIOOD PRODUCTS Association of W Hawaii has iust celebrated a birthday. As of April '1, we started our sixth year of wood promotion.

In these past five years we have spent nearly 200,000 lumber industry dollars on wood products' promotion. What has been accomplished ? Has this expenditure of lumber industry dollars been worthwhile to those supporting the expense?

As an organization, WPAH is set up in a fairly efficient manner. Last year for example, 69/o of our expense was for advertising and promotion, 25/o {or administralion, 6c/o for m,iscellaneous, including taxes, travel and dues.

Since WPAH has employed a stafi o{ director and secretary (early 1962) they have accomplished: nearly 1,000 specific calls; 7,800 column inches of publicity; 350 ad-

vertisements; 1,100 inquiries plus the public relations and goodwill that comes {rom maintaining an office and an active place in industry and community affairs. So what?

have sales increased?

As best we can figure with rather limited and sometimes conflicting statistical data, the wood products market has increased from around 90 million feet o{ lumber and plywood in 1962 to 125 million feet of lumber and plywood in 1965. In this same period residential and commercial construction has increased from $125 million to $147 million annually while total construction has jumped from $264 million to $338 million annually. Based upon these statistics it looks as if the wood products industry in Hawaii has increased sales 38/o, kept pace with construction increases and even made a nice gain.

MARKETING SUCCESS

Has S'PAH had anything to do with this marketins success? Yes! United effort by the major wood suppliers through a local trade association has opened many doors. Codes have been modified to benefit wood, specificrs have becn made aware of the wide range of wood products avail' able and suitable to their needs; and the public, including building officials, architects and builders, have been exposed to wood promotion and industry image build-

ing. Five years of wood promotion and some success is behind us. What lies ahead? In one man's opinion, unless our industry can begin to pull together again and continue the work of solving our customers' needs our future is black.

We need better agreement between the wood products and the wood treating industries with meaningful standards that will provide customer satisfaction.

W'e need quick action on rebirth of a national wood promotion program that will benefit all areas and all organizations willing to work with it. Now that NWPP is finished we find a big gap for literature and promotional data on the general 'ouse wood for -" thsms. A local wood promotion group cannot afford to produce the quality material of a national grotp. Thank Cod that the "Carauan" idea ol Wood' X[a,rketing, Inc., has been dropped. Hawaii as well as many other "unimportant" mar' ket areas would have sufiered. National advertising reaches farther plus it serves to make some points with the magazine and Madison Avenue people whom n'e cannot afford to overlook.

As stated in the beginning, these are one man's opinion based on the experience of one market area wood promotion group. I don't think we are so difierent that most of this wouldn't apply to you and your area. What do vou think?

SEMI-TRANSPARENT T(' ACCENT WOOD GRAINS

Here is a new stain you'll sell with confidence. It's the new approach to that "efiective weathered appearanoe on wood." Semi-transparent stain provides a tint of color to accent the grain and texture of natural wood. Made especially for cedar and redwood, though it works equally well on other woods, too. It-r eight colors, and one' or fivegallon containers. Attractive label sells on sight.

HEAVY-DUTY STAINS FOR SOLID GOLOR COVERAGE

Here is a companion stain that rounds out the line, opaque stain for full couerage. Proven in years of use on Shakertown's pre-finished cedar shingles and shakes. Its special formulation brushes on wood evenly and easily. there's no dripping! It's a great way for adding or changing color to previously stained surfaces also.

COMPLETE MERCHANDISING PROGRAM

Proven advertising for this proven stain. Throughout the nation, Shakertown dealers will tell you of the Shakertown success it sells without a comeback, and you get repeat sales! The merchandising program to architects and builders lets you tie-in with window banners, radio spots, and in-store promotion pieces to cash in on Shakertown's multi-media advertising. Accident Prevenlion Associotion Noses Iniury Rote is ltnProving

The California Lumbermen's Accident Prevention Assooiation has held its forty' ninth annual meeting and elected Alden Ball of the Pacific Lumber Company as president. Others elected were: Ed. Norby, Norby Lumber Co., North Fork, vice president, and Dwight C. Steele, secretary.

Elected to the board of directors were: D. R. Mitchell, chairman, Georgia Pacific; Stanley W. Hulett, Willits Redwood; Foster Morrison, Diamond National Corpora' tion; Ed O'Connor, Stockton Box Com' pany; S. T. Pipkin, General Box Distribu'

tors; T. L. Taylor, American Forest Products Corp. and Alder Thurman, Union Lumber Company.

Arthur I. Winston of the California Highway Patrol was the main speaker at the March 25 session. He summed up the working of the regulatory bodies ahd stated that regulation will not work if industry will not accept it.

He further stated that under the new regulation requiring truck driver's be given physical examination, 2,000 drivers have been examined and ,14 have been rejected.

IVinston said anyone wishing a copy of the Proposed Lumber and Log Regulations should write Captain W. Eugene Beck,

commander, administrative section, Depart' ment of California Highway Patrol, P. O. Box 898, Sacramento 95804.

Maurice I. Gershenson, chief of the Di' vision of Labor Statistics and Research for California" pointed out that the estimated work injury frequency rate of 46.3 is an all time low. If this trend continues it should go down to 45. in the next two months *tti.h it better than the national average.

Duiing the years 1950-57 the industry's frequency rate was reduced by 24 percent and then for the next seven years by only 412 percent. Greater progress was made in 1965 than in the entire preceding seven vears. ' Had the 1950 injury rate remained un' changed there would have occurred 32'600 additional injuries during the 15 year periodf951-1965.He congratulated the California Lumber' men's Accident Prevention Association on its all-time record frequency tate of' 29.25.

Geo. A. Sherman, the chief of the Divi' sion of Industrial Sa-fety for California, said that the Calilornia Lumbermen's Ac' cident Prevention Association has proved that ,by intelligmt and concertod drive, ac' cidents can be reduced. Other factors ef' fect this record but the reduction is clearly measured by the uniformly accepted system of statistical analYsis.

The chiefs recommendation was to spread the effort throughout the industry to help bring the total industry accident trend downward until both the total indus' try curve and CLAPA's become the same and decreasing.

rfHEY SAY LIBERACE never stops smiling, especially when he r picks up his check at the end of an engagement after he has smiled and incidentally, played the piano. How's it with you? Unfortunately, not too many lumber dealers wear a smile all the time and some seem never to show their teeth except to report on how bad things look o'and they can only get worse."

We all realize that picking up those checks can put a smile on the most dour face if the check represents a profit and not just a temporary means of keeping the wolf from the door for another week or month. The Lumber Merchants Association is most knowledeeable about this situationand we hopJ to help the matter for oll dealers.

A Ctlt{lC on Financial managment is coming up that all dealers may attend. Bob gives details.

Ot Jun" 7th and 8th at Fresno. we will open a 2-dav Financial Management Clinic developed expressly and sol"ly for retail lumber dealers. This program has been tried and it is successful. Dealers across the country have put it to work and have increased their net profit. In short, it's not pie in the sky, it's cash in the little tin box.

LMA members have received full details on this program and dealers who do not belong to LMA are encouraged to give me a call in Los Altos at (area code) 4I5 94I-L6L7 for full particulars. We are anxious that all dealers in northern California imnrove their financial picture in these days of increased competition. Just dial the number we'll O: h"OOJ to include you in this program.

It must be meeting time of the year again for one seems to folIow another and all add up to increased activity for LMA. The biggest of the year, of course, was the annual convention at Lake Tahoe May I.3. More on this in the next issue of Calilorniu Lumber Merchant.

Among the other meetings we have held recently have been the highly successful o'Dynamics of Selling" Seminars for retail dealers. Those who have attended have gone back to their stores and yards with a greater respect for and devotion to sales. As the old saying goes: Everything starts with a*sale. And it's true.

As executive vice president of LMA, I would like to add my personal thanks to the men who have made the last fiscal year of LMA the success it was. President Charlie Dart. Vice President Homer Hayward, Treasurer Stan Gustafson and all our board and committee members are to be consratulated. And thanked!

Long-Bell has a new-style door for their 9O-degree Lazy Susan conler cabinets, a bifold door that swings wide open, free of the shelves, for total accegg. With the door closed, the front looks like any other LongBell cabinet.

This eliminates the two most common irritants of ordinary 90-degree Lazy-Susan cabineLs-pinched fingers and unsightly gaps'

The door is not attached to the shelves, but is hinged in the middle. The door opens wide and lies flat in front of the adjacent cabinets. Only the shelves, not the door, rotate.

'With the door closed on an ordinary cabinet, there is a space between each edge

of the door and the cabinet frame. The cabinet looks different. Uneven loading of

shelves can tilt the door, further detracting from cabinet appearance.

There is no such gap in the Long-Bell cabinet.

One of the unusual new ideas in building materials unveiled at the National Housing Center's "New Products for 1966" show is a low-budget hardwood wall paneling designed to beautify homes at sharply reduced cost.

The paneling has a solid clear vinyl sheet bonded to its woodgrained surface. The plywood veneers are real Philippine lauan hardwood, according to Georgia-Pacific. Decorative choices range from "iced" teak, walnut and pecan to natural teak and oak.

New Double Four Siding Pqnels

A line of double four inch Cape Cod style siding panels has been introduced in three embossed designs by U.S. Aluminum Cor"p. The aluminum panels, called the Jam-

boree economy line, are being produced in rigidized striated, basket weave and stucco

patterns. This selection of designs will blend harmoniously with both colonial and contemporary style architecture.

This is the first time that the double four inch aluminum clapboard is being offered in a striated pattern.

The Jamboree panels are coated with Permlar, an exclusive acrylic enamel finish. They carry a lifetime guarantee against chipping, flaking, peeling and blistering.

Double four construction and deep embossing of the metal provide extra structural strength to this product. This timesavings feature allows the installer to lock in a panel with both hands free for nailing'

The home siding comes in white, sandalwood and a new olive "Colony Green" colot.

Dear Mr. Cutler:

You might try to imagine the deep shock I experienced when I read your "Win A Real Live Girl" story in your April issue. How a reputable lumberman can promote his "product" with such a disgraceful theme is quite beyond me.

I really wonder what the industry must think of Cooper Lumber's salesmanship after their last-resort use of sex to sell their wanes!

Sincerely,

Don Linford

Ilditor,

Sir: Congratulations on a fine article as re Cooper Lumber's new store "grand opening." The prizea grand one indeed - leads me to ask a question: What did Walter Hennig do with "Miss Grand Prizet' after he won her ?

Wish I'd won her!

ing down that part of the business.

A direct line ties headquarters to the new yard at Black Point, where the action is gonna' be, believe us. Here we find yard manager George Krings and another son, Jom Gehring, ironing out the wrinkles at the new yard, complete with a 5 car spur and located right next to the main NWP track. '

Again leaning on our trusty file, we see that Bob Gehring had been with Rolando Lumber Co. and its predecessor for 25 years before establishing Service Lumber Co. in San Francisco in l9zA. In the en-

CARGO_RAIL-TRUCK

A. YU NETH LAilBER SATES

suing years, we see that Bob also operated a sawmill, Mills Creek Lumber Co., near Healdsburg for many years, a remanufacturing plant built at Healdsburg in 1946, and a smaller sawmill at Healdsburg started in 1951. The latter mill was built for Bob's four boys-Bob, Don, Tom and Jim Gehring-and operated as Gehring Bros. Lumber Co.

The manufacturing end of the operation was successfully concluded several years ago and Gehring, along with sons Bob and Tom, has again narrowed his sights on the huge building potential in northern Marin County.

"Go where the action is gonna' be." That makes sense anyway you look at it.

Eugene Club Hos Drowing

C. Dan Christensen of Eugene's Christensen Lumber Co. did the honors at the HooHoo-Ette Clu,b Two drawing at the club's annual Bosses Night dinner, and drew the name of Betty Jones of Foster Lumber Co. in Vallejo, Calif. as the winner of a brand new television set.

The Eugene club will present the set to winner Betty when she and other lumbergals from Arizona, California and Oregon cohverge on Eugene for the national HooHoo-Ette convention May 20-22.

Nearly half-a-hundred attended the March l4th event. The entertainment was the Timberettes, a fine barbershop quartet, led by Bud Leabo of Mills Creek Lumber.
