Weil’s Disease (Leptospirosis) Weil’s Disease is a bacterial infection, caused by the Leptospirosis bacterium, and is spread by the urine of rats. The bacteria can enter your body through cuts, scratches, the mouth, throat or eyes after contact with contaminated water. An attack of Weil’s resembles a cold or flu in the initial stages. The incubation period is from 3 to 19 days. Early symptoms are: fever, muscular aches and pains, loss of appetite and nausea when lying down. Later symptoms may include: bruising of the skin, sore eyes, nose bleeds and jaundice. Any illness of this nature should be reported to your supervisor IMMEDIATELY, and you should visit your doctor. Remember you must always:
¡ Get cuts and grazes properly cleaned and treated
immediately and keep covered with a water proof dressing.
¡ Wash thoroughly before eating, drinking or smoking. ¡ Use protective clothing and replace any damaged items immediately.
