Working Near Water The danger of falling into water and being carried away by currents or drowned is ever present when working over or adjacent to water. It is necessary therefore to take the following precautions:

¡ Make sure that the platforms are secure and level to avoid tripping.

¡ Make sure that the toe boards and handrails are fitted

and firmly fixed to prevent dislodgement in high winds and swell conditions.

¡ Make sure that ladders are securely lashed to prevent movement.

¡ Safety harnesses must always be used. ¡ Safety helmets must always be used. ¡ Life jackets of an approved type and rating must be used. ¡ Make sure that life buoys are placed near at hand ready for immediate use, and fitted with grab lines.

¡ Make sure that a rescue boat of suitable size is available and manned at all times.

Remember: Keep the site tidy and remove trip hazards. Remove oily and slippery substances from all walkways. Wear nonslip footwear. Remove flotsam where practical.
