Permits to Work Any task involving specific hazards and requiring unusual control measures will be carried out using a ‘Permit to Work’ system. A ‘Permit to Work’ includes the precautions to be taken and is issued by a competent, trained person. The permit will give an allotted time in which to complete the work. If the work is not completed within that time, it must cease until a new permit is issued. The permit will be signed by the issuing authority, usually the client and the person responsible for carrying out or supervising the work and will be retained by the issuing authority. A copy of the permit will be held at the work area. Typical tasks requiring a permit include:

Hot work – welding, burning etc. Entry into confined spaces. Work on electrical apparatus. Breaking into joints. Working at height or on roofs.
