Jacqueline Hernández has made her path in the media, while Fidel Vargas has made his professional life in the education sector. Both stand out for their contributions from a Hispanic American vision in the United States.

Regarding the National Hispanic Heritage Month, AL DÍA recognized them at The Archetypes event, precisely because they are an example for society.

Jacqueline Hernández, daughter of Spanish parents, has had a successful career in the media. She was born and raised in New York. She graduated in English Literature and Art History from Tufts University in Massachusetts, and then got a Master of Business Adminis tration (MBA) from Baruch College in New York.

She worked at The Boston Globe, The Village Voice and TIME magazine, where she supervised international marketing for global operations. She served as Vice President at CNN International, TNT Latin America and Cartoon Network.

She later moved to People in Spanish to attract new audiences, as always. She was Director of Operations at Telemun do Media and then at NBC Universal. She now has her own company.

Since an early age, Fidel Vargas has stood out for his interest in the Latino community’s access to higher education. Today he is CEO of the Hispanic Schol arship Fund. He is the son of Mexican immigrants.

He graduated with honors from Har vard University, where he got a degree in Social Studies and an MBA from the Business School. Later, at the age of 23, he was elected Mayor of Baldwin Park, one of the youngest elected officials in this type of role. One of his priorities at the time (1992-1997) was the inclusion of Latin people in public office.

In 1995 he was chosen by Times maga zine as one of the 50 most promising lead

ers. In 2006 he was partner in the creation of Centinela Capital Partners. He has served on several boards of directors.

In 2013 he became executive director and CEO of the Hispanic Scholarship Fund (HSF), which financially supports Hispanic students for higher education.

LIFE ON THE BORDER

This edition also includes an article about Cuando llegues al otro lado, a novel by Mexican-Cuban writer Mariana Osorio, which tells the story of two brothers who want to cross the United States’ border.

Una de sus prioridades de entonces (1992-1997) fue la inclusión de la tinas y latinos cargos públicos.

En 1995 fue elegido por la revista Ti mes entre los 50 líderes con mayor proyec ción. En el 2006 fue socio para la creación de Centinela Capital Partners. Ha sido parte de varias juntas directivas.

Despite making up nearly one-fifth of the U.S. population, Latinos only make up about 4% of the legal field. For Latinas, the number is cut in half to about 2%.

Gelvina Rodriguez Stevenson is one Latina lawyer who has set out to provide avenues for oth ers in the Hispanic community to enter into the legal profession.

As the daughter of two parents who were so cial activists, Rodriguez Stevenson wanted to find a way to give back to her community, and thought law was an effective way to do it.

Rodriguez Stevenson attended New York Uni versity Law School, where she would later earn a joint degree — a juris doctor in law and a master’s degree — in public policy.

While she finished law school, her experience there wasn’t without a glaring discovery.

“I felt like I was maybe one of five Latinx stu dents in law school, so I always spent a lot of my time trying to find my people and my community,” said Rodriguez Stevenson in an interview with AL DÍA.

Originally intimidated, she would soon discov er the NYU Law alumni association, now called the Law Alumni of Color Association (LACA).

There, she learned there was a much greater group of individuals of Latinx descent who had graduated from NYU Law School, but not without their own challenges of underrepresentation with in the program.

More importantly, it set forth her mission.

A TRUE PASSION

Rodriguez Stevenson’s career has seen her work at law firms, a District Court, New York City Council, colleges, a hospital, and a research insti tution.

However, her advocacy work remains of ut most importance to her.

She became regional president for the New York chapter of the Hispanic Bar Association in 2008.

Even after her term as president ended, she re mained committed to the organization, providing avenues for more young Latinx and other diverse individuals to pursue legal careers.

We’re getting more diverse students into law school and they’re graduating, but... we’re just not getting all the way through.

Apesar de constituir casi una quinta parte de la población estadounidense, los latinos solo representan alrededor del 4 % del ám bito jurídico. En el caso de las latinas, la cifra se reduce a la mitad: al 2 %.

Gelvina Rodríguez Stevenson es una abogada latina que se ha propuesto ofrecer vías para que otros miembros de la comunidad hispana entren en la profesión jurídica.

Como hija de dos padres activistas sociales, Ro dríguez Stevenson quería encontrar una forma de devolver algo a su comunidad, y pensó que el dere cho era una manera eficaz de hacerlo.

Rodríguez Stevenson asistió a la New York Univer sity Law School, de donde obtuvo la doble titulación de doctorado en derecho y maestría en política pública.

Intimidada al principio, pronto descubrió la asociación de exalumnos de Derecho de la New York University (NYU), ahora llamada Law Alumni of Color Association (LACA). Allí se enteró de que ha bía un grupo mucho mayor de personas de ascenden cia latina que se habían graduado en la Facultad de Derecho de la NYU, pero no sin sus propios retos de subrepresentación dentro del programa. Y, lo que es más importante, estableció su misión.

UNA VERDADERA PASIÓN

En su carrera, Rodríguez Stevenson ha traba jado en bufetes de abogados, un tribunal de distri to, el ayuntamiento de Nueva York, universidades, un hospital y una institución de investigación. Sin embargo, su trabajo como abogada sigue siendo de suma importancia para ella.

En el 2008, se convirtió en presidenta regional de la sección neoyorquina de la Hispanic Bar Associa tion (HNBA).

As the toll of Hurricane Ian becomes clearer by the day, it will likely be one of the cost liest and deadliest storms to ever hit the mainland U.S. in modern history. A death toll of over a hun dred continues to rise as rescuers dig through more rubble looking for survi vors and early estimates put the cost at $60 billion in losses.

But who’s leading the recovery ef forts on the ground?

Yes, FEMA is there providing relief and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and President Joe Biden visited some disaster zones last week before putting their political differences aside for the good of Florida’s suffering population, but another significant portion of re lief workers are migrants — mostly from Latin America.

As crazy as it sounds given DeSan tis’ extremely public chartered flight of Venezuelan migrants from Texas to Martha’s Vineyard, they are also arriv ing to the Sunshine State in droves to help the recovery effort.

RECRUITED FROM NEW YORK

There have even been reports, like one from the New York Post, that docu ments migrants that were sent to New York from places like Texas, being re cruited for cleanup work in Florida and being driven there in a van.

“I’m going for the work. It’s been hard for us migrants to find work here in New York, that’s why a lot of us are going. How’s the work in Florida?” 37-year-old Javier Moreno, a Venezu

The vans and trips were supposedly commissioned by a water and debris company. A driver of one of the vans also confirmed that Florida was the destination for those catching a ride.

“I don’t know how many people have left or how many more vans are coming,” he told the New York Post.

FEMA and New York City Mayor Eric Adams also confirmed that they had no involvement in the trips South for work.

Like those taking work for the unnamed water and debris company in Florida, most migrants that are working in Ian’s disaster zone now are also there on behalf of private companies. That’s been an often unseen reality for the last two-plus decades in the event of natural disasters.

Take the experience of Johnny Aburto, who was recently interviewed by TIME Magazine not long after arriving in Port Charlotte, Florida to help with the cleanup efforts. He is 42 and originally from Nicaragua.

In the past, Aburto was in New Orleans for Hurricane Katrina cleanup, Baton Rouge following Louisiana’s 2016 floods, Panama City, Florida in 2018 after Hurricane Michael, and in Lake Charles, Louisiana in 2020 after Hurricane Laura.

“These kinds of events really affect people. We do our bit to help them,” Aburto told TIME.

WELCOME WITH A CATCH

That help comes regardless of how those being helped feel about mi-

On Wednesday, Oct. 5, a three-judge panel in the U.S. Fifth District Court of Appeals sent a chill down the spines of every DACA recipient in the country as it ruled the Obama-era program “unlaw ful,” affirming a previous ruling by a Texas judge that said the former president overstepped his author ity when he created the program through a memo.

In light of recent efforts by the Biden administration to put fur ther executive protections in place for the program, the panel sent the case back to a lower court for con sideration of those new elements.

Like Texas Judge Andrew Hanen that ruled before, the entire three-judge panel that called DACA “unlawful” was also made up en tirely of Republicans.

Also like Hanen, the panel did not shoot down the program in its entirety, mandating that the gov ernment should not “take any im migration, deportation or criminal action” against DACA recipients that it “would not otherwise take.”

A FRAGILE FUTURE

Renewal requests for DACA can continue for the time being, but no new applications will be accepted. Given its current trajectory, it is very likely the DACA program will get another date with a much more conservative Supreme Court in the near future. The last time the pro gram was debated in the highest court in 2020, the justices ruled 5-4 in favor of overturning the Trump administration’s termination of DACA, with Chief Justice John Roberts joining Justices Stephen Breyer, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Ele na Kagan and Sonia Sotomayor.

In response to the Fifth District Court’s opinion, Biden said he was “disappointed.”

“The court’s stay provides temporary reprieve for DACA recipients but one thing remains clear: the lives of Dreamers remain in limbo,” he continued.

The president and many Democratic members of Congress also used the appeals court’s decision to reignite calls for legislation to provide a pathway to citizenship for DACA recipients and the wid-

er undocumented immigrant population.

“This decision makes 100% clear that the options for preserving DACA in the courts are dwindling and essentially nonexistent at this point. We really need Congress to step up,” said Jess Hanson, a staff lawyer at the National Immigration Law Center.

BIPARTISAN TO POLARIZED

Regarding the children of undocumented immigrants, the legislation journey in Congress has been an ongoing discussion for the last two-plus decades.

Now, on the other hand, we saw Blinken sign an agreement with Vice President Francia Márquez, promising that the United States will be ‘the first international guarantor’ of the ethnic point of the Peace Agreement [...]. Analyst Rafael Ernesto Góchez recalls that “according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), 2021 was the year with the highest number of deaths of migrants recorded in the Americas. [...] These deaths are mostly related to the lack of options for safe and regular mobility, which causes many people to use irregular migration routes that put their lives at risk. [...] The problem is complex and requires joint action by countries of origin, transit and destination [...] The Salvadoran migration phenomenon should be addressed in a comprehensive manner (causes and e ects), given that 1) three out of every ten fellow citizens live abroad and 2) about 450 Salvadorans have emigrated daily in recent decades and have done so mainly undocumented and to the United States. More than 47,000 Salvadorans were detained at the southern border of the United States between January and June 2022. [...] the U.S.-Mexico border is the third deadliest border region in the world after the Mediterranean and the Sahara Desert”.

Carlos Ruiz González, in his analysis, raises the implications of Mexican migration to the United States. “There are many Mexican products in New York. In medium-sized supermarkets you can see Herdez sauces and almost all brands of Mexican beer [...] Why have they done so well? [...] Perhaps it is the quality of the beer, which is very well cared for [...]. In terms of processes, Mission tortilla brand caught my attention [...] Once again we have a process capable of meeting the demanding quality requirements of the health authorities and, above all, of the customers. It is not a matter of improvisation, but of constant and innovative work [...] Finally, between processes and culture are people and their ideas. There are millions of Mexicans who migrate to the United States, most of them face tremendous dangers, and perhaps that is why they are so successful later on. These migrants have been tempered by adversity [...] Their case is that of many fellow citizens who, despite the enormous risks involved, are making their way in a di cult society, but one that gives them opportunities [...]”.

Jaime Zambrano’s analysis refers to the causes of migration: “International migration and the flow of people seeking the so-called ‘American dream’ will not stop until the causes that originate the departure of thousands of people from their communities of origin in search of a better reality are addressed [...], families are facing economic problems and, at the same time, those who live in the United States are letting their family and friends know that there are sources of work, money and even a place to sleep for those who decide to cross the border illegally. Migrants who begin their journey in search of a better present know that their lives are at risk; however, in the face of the circumstances they leave their wives, children and friends, with the hope that nothing will happen to them and that they will fulfill their dreams. Some plan to stay in the United States for two, three or four years, to generate savings and then start a business in Mexico and pay o their debts, while others think that, at some point, they could take their family to the area where they are working”.

The world of media, business can be a fierce world. But it is also a place where major influence is won and harnessed.

Given that influence, it helps to have people in positions of power who reflect the growing diversity of the country.

Jacqueline Hernández is a real life representative of that.

A Latina in the media business whose career expands over a quarter century, through tireless work, Hernández has helmed some of the biggest names in the corporate media and publishing worlds.

THE CLASSIC ‘AMERICAN DREAM’

Born and raised in New York City to immigrant Spanish parents, her father from Cartagena Murcia and her mother from the small town of Guernica in the Basque region of Spain, they were the classic example of the American Dream.

They were honest, humble, and hardworking people who came to the U.S. for a better life and opportunity, and looked to give her and her sister a life they never had. That kind of drive is what ultimately led to her father building from the ground up and running a successful contracting company.

Education was heavily encouraged as the ticket to a better life. Like most children of immigrants, Hernández was a first-generation student who was the first to attend and graduate from college and graduate school in her family. She even graduated a year early in both high school and college.

“I love studying to be honest with you. Even to this day,” she told AL DÍA

ENGLISH ESPAÑOL

Hernández got her Bachelor’s Degree from Tufts University in Massachusetts in English Literature and Art History, and had initially gone with plans of going into international relations before everything changed with one marketing class.

“I tell young people that are going to college to really use the experience to find what you like and what you don’t like and learn from that because it’s very important for you to be passionate about what you do if you want to be successful,” she said.

BOSTON TO NYC, AND THEN TIME

Hernández remained in Boston after getting her bachelor’s degree, where she worked at The Boston Globe for two years. After the Globe, she missed her home of New York City and her family, and decided to go back where she got a job at The Village Voice. It was there that Hernández realized she loved the media, but also its business side. She decided to matriculate and began taking night classes at Baruch College in NYC in pursuit of her Master of Business Association (MBA).

“I really love how business is like a puzzle where you put the pieces together. And if you really have a vision and you execute it, it’s incredible how you can see businesses grow,” Hernández said.

In 1995, Hernández began working at TIME Magazine, at the time known as Time Warner. She oversaw all international marketing for their global operations and magazine, which included Time Atlantic, Asia, and Latin America to bring them to the international audience.

“It was a great pleasure for me because it was the first time in my career that I was using my Spanish. Being able to travel across the region, especially in Mexico and speak Spanish was not only an asset, but it was a great joy,” she said.

Through Time, she began working on a protocol program with CNN and Turner Broadcasting, owned by Time Warner/Warner Brothers Discovery. Hernández was eventually recruited to the Turner side of Time at the beginning of the TV and digital tech boom in the news industry.

EL CLÁSICO ‘SUEÑO AMERICANO’

Hernández nació y creció en Nueva York. Sus padres, españoles inmigrantes —su padre de Cartagena, Murcia, y su madre de la pequeña ciudad de Guernica, en la región vasca de España—, eran el clásico ejemplo del sueño americano.

Honestos, humildes y trabajadores, llegaron a Estados Unidos en busca de oportunidades y de una vida mejor. El deseo de dar a sus hijas aquello que nunca tuvo fue el empuje que llevó al padre de Hernández a construir desde cero y a dirigir una exitosa empresa de contratación.

Se fomentaba mucho la educación como billete para una vida mejor. Como

bió con una clase de marketing. En sus palabras, “Les digo a los jóvenes que van a la universidad que aprovechen la experiencia para encontrar lo que les gusta y lo que no, y que aprendan de ello. Es muy importante que te apasione lo que haces, si quieres tener éxito”.

DE BOSTON A NUEVA YORK, Y LUEGO A TIME

Tras obtener su licenciatura, Hernández se quedó en Boston, y allí trabajó en The Boston Globe durante dos años. Luego, echó de menos su casa de Nueva York y su familia, y decidió volver. Allí consiguió un trabajo en The Village Voice, donde descubrió no solo que le gustaban los medios de comunicación, sino también su faceta empresarial. Así, empezó a tomar clases nocturnas en el Baruch College de Nueva York, en busca de su Master of Business Administration (MBA).

“Me encanta que los negocios sean como un rompecabezas, en el que vas encajando las piezas. Y si realmente tienes una visión y la ejecutas, es increíble cómo puedes ver crecer los negocios”, dijo Hernández.

En 1995, Hernández empezó a trabajar en la revista TIME, entonces conocida como Time Warner. Supervisó todo el marketing internacional de sus operaciones globales y de la revista, que incluía Time Atlántico, Asia y América Latina, para llevarla al público internacional. “Fue un gran placer para mí porque era la primera vez en mi carrera que utilizaba mi español. Poder viajar por toda la región, especialmente por México, y hablar español no solo fue una ventaja, sino también una gran alegría”, dijo.

“It’s about educating and celebrating cultures, diverse cultures, countries and people and their heritages,” said Hernán dez. “And it’s really the key to any busi ness’s success now and into the future as we continue to become even more and more diverse as a world.”

JACKIE IN CHARGE

After five years at CNN/Turner Broadcasting, Hernández hit a point in her journey that she deemed to be “a real career changing moment,” when she went to work for People en Español.

For the first time in her career she was asked to run the entire P&L (profit and loss statement), overseeing every little detail of the business operation. During her four years there, Hernández was also asked to take on a second job running Teen People Magazine for an interim year in which she drove the publication to immediately grow advertising revenue and improve the pub lications operating cash flow.

Again, it was also about attracting the Gen Z and growing Latino population to the publication.

“It really started my passion for al ways being on top of the next generation. Ten years ago, I was very focused on being a millennial expert. Now I’m extremely deep in understanding Gen Z, because it is the next generation that is defining the future of businesses, future trends, and culture that we live in,” she said.

TELEMUNDO AND NBC TRIUMPHS

Her successes at those two publica tions led to her next position as Chief Operating Officer at Telemundo Media. She came to the company at a time when Telemundo was second to Univision and ultimately looked to close the gap between the two Hispanic media giants, and furthermore, develop a vision that would take them to number one.

By the time she left six years later, Hernández had done just that.

Another key highlight of her career at Telemundo was acquiring the television

rights to the FIFA World Cup. They’re rights Telemundo still holds to this day.

“When I went to Telemundo, the first thing my parents asked was — ‘Are you going to get the World Cup?’ said Hernán dez. “It was a highlight of my career to get the phone call from Zurich saying we won the rights.”

Following her time at Telemundo, she made the jump to NBC Universal, where she looked to increase the Latino audience and viewership among younger generations.

There, she created an initiative called America Reimagined. It looked at the population changes in diversity, multiculturalism, and with the younger generations in mind. It was extremely successful in driving growth in those ar eas, which she said was a big reason she eventually started her own company be cause of the impact she witnessed when working with leaders and companies on how to engage, connect, and bring new audiences to businesses and platforms.

After NBC Universal, she started that company, but was soon asked to helm the Hispanic MMA Sports Fran chise Combate Americas. She did for two years, growing it into a global com bat sports brand, and went on to sit on the board of directors for multiple com panies, including Redbox, Isos Acquisi tions, and Estrella Media.

NEW MAJORITY READY

But back to her own company, Hernández said it was started as a result of her more than a quarter century mov ing up the corporate ladder and guiding other massive entities in the media space.

Over three years ago, Hernández founded and is the current CEO of New Majority Ready. It’s a firm that is focused on strategic marketing, consulting, and helping businesses expand with the ev er-growing multicultural and Latino pop ulation. Her previous work helped her find that passion.

At the center of that love for multi culturalism and entrepreneurship is her father, the original business founder in her life.

“In my office, on my bulletin board, I have my father’s self-employment card. I was always very motivated by someone who came to this country speaking very little English, and was a blue-collar work er and ended up running his own busi ness very successfully,” said Hernández. Because of that, I knew I had an entre preneurial DNA in me.”

The name of the game now in media, and something Hernández hears a lot from clients is “transformation” when it comes to whose attention is desired.

With diversity, that also includes the need for more Latina and multicultural females to strive for and thrive in the business sector to further drive its own growth and diversity. The arena can be cut-throat for all Latinas and other fe males of color like Hernández, but she offered some advice for the next genera tion for AL DÍA to pass on.

“I remember once someone saying to me, ‘you’re gonna have to work twice as hard as a man and even three or four times harder than a white man.’And I said: ‘You know what? I’m in. Sign me up. I love to work hard,’” said Hernández. “Pre paring yourself, doing the work that you need, being diligent about it, and having a bar of excellence.”

As for her own future, Hernández will continue to run and grow New Majority Ready and has lots of plans. The compa ny recently launched what it hopes to be a multicultural streaming service called New Majority Storytelling. It hopes to “au thentically represent America, rich with diversity,” while “celebrating our cultur al fusion of people from different back grounds and ethnicities,” through scripted TV shows and more.

“We like to say, ‘Multicultural Content for Mainstream America,’” she told AL DÍA. “Our aim is to bring multicultural voices from incredible creators to the fore front.”z

JACKIE AL MANDO

Después de cinco años en CNN/Turner Broadcasting, Hernández llegó a un punto en su trayectoria que consideró “un verdadero momento de cambio en su carrera”, cuando entró a trabajar en People en español.

Por primera vez en su carrera le pidieron que dirigiera toda la cuenta de resultados, supervisando cada pequeño detalle de la operación comercial. Durante sus cuatro años allí, a Hernández también le pidieron que asumiera un segundo trabajo dirigiendo la revista Teen People durante un año interino, en el que impulsó la publicación para aumentar inmediatamente los ingresos por publicidad y mejorar el flujo de caja operativo de las publicaciones. De nuevo, la misión era atraer a la publicación a la generación Z y a la creciente población latina.

“Realmente comenzó mi pasión por estar siempre al tanto de la próxima generación. Hace diez años, estaba muy centrada en ser una experta en millennials, ahora estoy interesada en entender a la generación Z porque es la que está definiendo el futuro de los negocios, las tendencias futuras y la cultura en la que vivimos”, dijo.

TRIUNFOS EN

TELEMUNDO Y NBC

Sus éxitos en esas dos publicaciones la llevaron a su siguiente puesto como directora de operaciones en Telemundo Media. Llegó a la empresa en un momento en que Telemundo era el segundo medio de comunicación después de Univisión, así que su objetivo fue cerrar la brecha entre los dos gigantes de los medios de comunicación hispanos y desarrollar una visión que los llevara al número uno. Cuando se marchó, seis años más tarde, Hernández lo había conseguido.

Otro punto clave de su carrera en Telemundo fue la adquisición de los derechos de televisión de la Copa Mundial de la FIFA, derechos que Telemundo conserva hasta hoy. “Cuando entré en Telemundo, lo primero que me preguntaron mis padres fue: ‘¿Vas a conseguir la Copa del

Mundo?’. Recibir la llamada telefónica de Zúrich diciendo que habíamos ganado los derechos marcó mi carrera”.

Tras su paso por Telemundo, dio el salto a NBC Universal, donde trató de aumentar la audiencia latina y los espectadores de las generaciones más jóvenes. Allí creó una iniciativa llamada America Reimagined, con miras a analizar los cambios de la población en cuanto a diversidad y multiculturalidad, teniendo en cuenta a las generaciones más jóvenes. Tuvo un gran éxito a la hora de impulsar el crecimiento en esas áreas, lo que, según ella, fue una de las principales razones por las que acabó fundando su propia empresa, debido al impacto que presenció al trabajar con líderes y empresas sobre cómo atraer, conectar y llevar nuevas audiencias a las empresas y plataformas.

Después de NBC Universal, puso en marcha esa empresa, pero pronto le pidieron que dirigiera la franquicia deportiva hispana de MMA Combate Americas. Lo hizo durante dos años y la convirtió en una marca mundial de deportes de combate. Después pasó a formar parte del consejo de administración de múltiples empresas, como Redbox, Isos Acquisitions y Star Media.

Actualmente sigue formando parte del consejo de administración de Victoria’s Secret.

LA NUEVA MAYORÍA ESTÁ LISTA

Volviendo a su propia empresa, Hernández dijo que se inició como resultado de su más de un cuarto de siglo ascendiendo en la escala corporativa y guiando a otras entidades masivas en el espacio de los medios de comunicación.

Hace más de tres años, Hernández fundó y es la actual directora general de New Majority Ready, una empresa centrada en el marketing estratégico, la consultoría y la ayuda a las empresas para que se expandan con la creciente población multicultural y latina. Su trabajo anterior la ayudó a encontrar esa pasión.

En medio de ese amor por la multiculturalidad y el espíritu empresarial está su padre, el fundador original de la empresa en su vida. “En mi oficina, en mi tablón de anuncios, tengo la tarjeta de autoempleo de mi padre. Siempre me motivó el hecho de que alguien que llegó a este país hablando muy poco inglés, y siendo un obrero, acaba-

ra dirigiendo su propio negocio con mucho éxito”, dice Hernández. “Por eso, sabía que había un ADN empresarial en mí”.

El nombre del juego ahora en los medios de comunicación, y algo que Hernández escucha mucho de los clientes, es “transformación”, cuando se trata de la atención que se desea.

En cuanto a la diversidad, esto también incluye la necesidad de que más mujeres latinas y multiculturales se esfuercen y prosperen en el sector empresarial para impulsar su propio crecimiento y diversidad. La arena puede ser muy dura para todas las latinas y otras mujeres de color como Hernández, pero ella ofreció algunos consejos para la próxima generación para que AL DÍAlos transmita.

“Recuerdo que una vez alguien me dijo: Vas a tener que trabajar el doble que un hombre e incluso tres o cuatro veces

más que un blanco’, y yo le dije: ‘¿Sabes qué? Me apunto. Apúntame, me encanta trabajar duro’”, dijo Hernández. “Prepárate, haz el trabajo que necesitas, sé diligente en ello y ten una meta de excelencia”.

En cuanto a su propio futuro, Hernández seguirá dirigiendo y haciendo crecer la New Majority Ready, y tiene muchos planes. La empresa ha lanzado recientemente lo que espera ser un servicio de streaming multicultural llamado New Majority Storytelling. Espera “representar auténticamente a Estados Unidos, rico en diversidad”, al tiempo que “celebrar nuestra fusión cultural de personas de diferentes orígenes y etnias”, a través de programas de televisión con guiones y más. Fidel Vargas started to make his way into higher education as soon as he received his admission letter from Harvard University. The first person to read it was his mother, who took it to the baseball field where Fidel was practicing for his championship as a senior student in Baldwin Park, California.

Her mom parked in a hurry on the grounds of the baseball field, kicking up sand and upsetting Fidel’s coach and everyone practicing there. Inside the van were his seven siblings and her, who was moving the letter of admission back and forth. From the batting green, Fidel couldn’t imagine what the envelope was about.

“She told me ‘open it, open it’... although the envelope was already open (he said with a chuckle). The letter said ‘Congratulations, you were accepted to Harvard’ and I ran to my coach”, Vargas said during an interview conducted by the SchermCo organization.

By 1986, Fidel started his first year as a student at Harvard in Boston, Massachusetts, becoming the first generation in his family to get a college degree. By Christmas of that year, he had his first contact with the Hispanic Scholarship Fund (HSF), where he works as CEO. At that time, he received a 1,000 dollar scholarship from HSF. With that money, Fidel was able to pay his way from Massachusetts to California to spend the traditional Christmas holidays with his family.

“I had only bought a ticket to Harvard, but I hadn’t bought a return ticket. And I didn’t know that I couldn’t stay for Christmas in the Harvard dorms... From that moment on, HSF has had a warm place in my heart”, Vargas admitted to SchermCo.

The letter came from HSF founder Ernest Robles, who passed away on September 5th.

CAREER PATH

At the age of 23, Fidel was elected Mayor of Baldwin Park and became one of the youngest elected officials in history. In addition to being the city where he grew up, Baldwin Park was and continues to be a region with a high Latin population. During his term as Mayor, from 1992 to 1997, his mission focused on the inclusion of the Latino community in political posts, a situation that made many conservative citizens in the area uncomfortable.

His first and perhaps most notable changes in the Mayor’s office were replacing several commissioners, committee and board members to create a workforce that better reflected the local demographics of the time: 70 % Latin, 12 % Asian American and 5 % African American. Today, the DATA USA portal claims that 74 % of the population in Baldwin Park is Latin.

“My friends didn’t have the courage to tell me I was crazy to run for Mayor. A lot of people told me after I was elected: ‘I didn’t think you had a chance’”, Vargas confessed in an interview in 1994 with Los Angeles Times. That year, he was selected by the prestigious TIME magazine as one of the 50 most promising leaders for the future. Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates and philanthropist Oprah Winfrey also made the list.

By 2006, Vargas became a founding partner of Centinela Capital Partners, a New York-based private equity firm. He remained there until 2012, where he managed nearly 1 billion dollars in minority-owned funds.

Fidel Vargas comenzó a abrirse camino en la educación superior tan pronto recibió la carta de admisión de la Universidad de Harvard. La primera persona que la leyó fue su mamá, quien se encargó de llevársela al campo de béisbol donde Fidel practicaba para su campeonato como estudiante senior en la ciudad de Baldwin Park, California.

Su mamá se estacionó con prisa en los predios del campo de béisbol, levantando la arena y alterando al entrenador de Fidel y a todos los que allí practicaban. Dentro de la camioneta estaban sus siete hermanos y ella, quien movía la carta de admisión de un lado para el otro. Desde el campo de bateo, Fidel no podía divisar bien de qué se trataba ese sobre.

“Me dijo ‘ábrelo, ábrelo’… aunque el sobre ya estaba abierto (dijo entre risas). La carta decía ‘felicidades, fuiste aceptado en Harvard’ y salí corriendo donde mi entrenador”, aseguró Vargas durante una entrevista realizada por la organización SchermCo.

Para 1986, Fidel arrancó su primer año como estudiante de Harvard en Boston, Massachusetts, convirtiéndose en la primera generación de su familia en obtener un grado universitario. Para las Navidades de ese mismo año, tuvo su primer acercamiento con la organización Hispanic Scholarship Fund (HSF), donde funge como CEO. En ese entonces, recibió una beca de $1,000 por parte de la HSF. Con ese dinero, Fidel logró pagar su pasaje desde Massachusetts a California para pasar las tradicionales fiestas de Navidad junto a su familia.

“Había comprado sólo un pasaje para ir a Harvard, pero no había comprado pasaje de vuelta. Y yo no sabía que no podía quedarme en Navidad en los dormitorios de Harvard… Desde ese momento, la HSF ha tenido un lugar cálido en mi corazón”, admitió Vargas para SchermCo.

La carta venía de parte del fundador del HSF, Ernest Robles, quien falleció el pasado 5 de septiembre.

Vargas se graduó con honores de la Universidad de Harvard, donde obtuvo un bachillerato en Estudios Sociales y un MBA de la Escuela de Negocios.

TRAYECTORIA PROFESIONAL

Con 23 años, Fidel fue elegido alcalde de Baldwin Park, convirtiéndose en uno de los funcionarios electos más jóvenes de la historia. Además de ser la ciudad que lo vio crecer, Baldwin Park fue y continúa siendo una región con una alta población de latinos. Dentro de su periodo como alcalde, de 1992 a 1997, su misión se enfocó en la inclusión de la comunidad latina en puestos políticos, situación que incomodó a muchos ciudadanos conservadores de la zona.

Sus primeros cambios en la alcaldía, y quizás los más notables, consistieron en sustituir a varios comisionados, miembros de comités y de juntas directivas para crear una fuerza de trabajo que reflejara mejor la demografía local de ese entonces: 70% de latinos, 12% de asiático-americanos y 5% de afroamericanos. Actualmente, el portal DATA USA asegura que el 74% de la población en Baldwin Park son latinos.

“Mis amigos no tuvieron el valor de decirme que estaba loco por presentarme a la alcaldía. Mucha gente me dijo después de ser elegido: ‘No creí que tuvieras posibilidades’”, confesó Vargas en una entrevista para Los Angeles Times en el 1994. Para ese mismo año, fue seleccionado por la prestigiosa revista Times como uno de los 50 líderes más prometedores para el futuro. El cofundador de Microsoft, Bill Gates, y la filántropa Oprah Winfrey también formaron parte de la lista.

Para el 2006, Vargas se convirtió en socio fundador de Centinela Capital Partners, una empresa de capital privado con sede en Nueva York. Allí se mantuvo hasta el 2012, donde gestionó casi $1.000 millones en fondos para propietarios de minoría.

THE HISPANIC SCHOLARSHIP FUND

In 2013, Fidel Vargas joined the HSF as Executive Director and CEO. Since he started, he has focused on creating the technology infrastructure the organiza tion needed to extend the scope in terms of programs, information and resources.

HSF is a non-profit organization founded in 1975 with the mission to em power, educate and financially support Hispanic students on their path to higher education. It offers a variety of scholar ships to as many exceptional students, scholarship recipients and alumni as possible.

Since its inception, the organization has awarded about 675 million dollars in scholarships to more than 65,000 scholar ship recipients, including U.S. Treasurer Rosa Gumataotao Rios and American Civil Liberties Union Director Anthony Romero.

HSF currently has 530 advisory board members throughout the United States and 25,000 scholarship recipients at more than 1,200 universities.

HSF scholarship amounts range from 500 to 5,000 dollars, but the actual amount a student might earn will vary based on the financial need. Scholarship funds can be used for tuition, books and other ac ademic expenses. It can also be used to pay for housing, food and transportation expenses.

HSF offers programs for organiza tions, businesses and institutions, as well as support services for parents of K-12 and college students. “We need to be a source not only for students, but also for parents to help them prepare, plan and pay for college”, Vargas told The Alumni Society.

THE VARGAS FAMILY AND THEIR LOVE FOR EDUCATION

Vargas was born in the state of Cali fornia, in the city of Lynwood. He spent his childhood and youth in Baldwin Park,

a city located in the central San Gabriel Valley region of Los Angeles County. He is the son of immigrant parents and the oldest of eight children.

As he confesses in most of his inter views, he learned the value of education from his parents, who migrated from Mexico to the United States in the sixties.

His father was a carpenter and his mother was a homemaker, but in her spare time she enjoyed volunteering as a school organizer. Her two sisters work as elementary school teachers. Both par ents were instrumental in inculcating in their children an interest in higher education.

“The love for education is huge in my family”, Vargas confessed to Scher mCo. Fidel is also a certified high school teacher. He earned his certification during his senior year at Harvard.

LATINOS AND EDUCATION

Vargas is a staunch advocate for access to education in the Latin and Hispanic community. However, he ac knowledges that there is still a lack of information about the financial aid that exists for young Latinos to continue their college studies.

“For a while, I stopped telling peo ple I wanted to go to Harvard because everyone looked at me like I was crazy or said: ‘You’re not going to be able to do it’”, Vargas said about his experience as a Latin in higher education.

According to the HSF CEO, many of the challenges faced by first-generation students revolve around the “subtle un familiarity with things” and financing their studies. As an example, Vargas shared that most parents are unaware that there are universities in the United States, like Harvard and Stanford Uni versity, that cover tuition costs for any student whose family earns less than 150,000 dollars. If they earn less than 65,000 a year, some universities may cov er all the student’s college expenses.

“If you’re a young Latin in middle school and you think no Latin goes to col lege, you accept that that’s your destiny”, Vargas concluded for The Alumni Society.

SU LLEGADA AL

En el 2013, Fidel Vargas se unió como director ejecutivo y CEO del HSF. Desde que comenzó, se ha centrado en crear la infraestructura tecnológica que la organización necesitaba para ampliar su alcance de programas, información y recursos.

La HSF es una organización sin ánimo de lucro fundada en 1975 con la misión de capacitar, educar y apoyar económicamente a los estudiantes hispanos en su camino hacia la educación superior. Ofrece una variedad de becas al mayor número posible de estudiantes, becarios y ex alumnos excepcionales.

Desde sus inicios, la entidad ha concedido unos $675 millones en becas para más de 65,000 becarios, entre quienes se encuentran la tesorera de Estados Unidos, Rosa Gumataotao Ríos, y el director de la American Civil Liberties Union, Anthony Romero.

Actualmente, la HSF cuenta con 530 miembros del consejo asesor alrededor de todos los Estados Unidos y 25.000 becarios en más de 1.200 universidades.

LA FAMILIA VARGAS Y SU AMOR POR LA EDUCACIÓN

Vargas nació en el estado de California, en la ciudad de Lynwood. Pasó su niñez y

juventud en Baldwin Park, una ciudad situada en la región central del Valle de San Gabriel, en el condado de Los Ángeles. Es hijo de padres inmigrantes y el mayor de ocho hermanos.

“El amor por la educación es enorme en mi familia”, confesó Vargas para SchermCo. Fidel también es maestro certificado de escuela secundaria. Obtuvo su certificación durante su último año en Harvard.

LOS LATINOS Y LA EDUCACIÓN

Vargas es un fiel defensor del acceso a la educación en la comunidad latina e his-

pana. Sin embargo, reconoce que aún falta información sobre las ayudas económicas que existen para que los jóvenes latinos continúen sus estudios universitarios.

“Por un tiempo, dejé de decirles a las personas que quería ir a Harvard porque todo el mundo me miraba como si yo estuviera loco o me decían: ‘Tú no lo vas a poder hacer’”, reveló Vargas sobre su experiencia como latino en la educación superior.

Según el CEO de HSF, muchos de los desafíos que enfrentan los estudiantes de primera generación giran en torno al “sutil desconocimiento de las cosas” y la financiación de sus estudios. Como ejemplo, Vargas compartió que la mayoría de los padres no saben que existen universidades en los Estados Unidos, como Harvard y la Universidad de Stanford, que cubren los gastos de matrícula a todo estudiante cuya familia gane menos de $150,000. De ganar menos de $65,000 al año, algunas universidades podrían cubrir todos los gastos universitarios del estudiante.

“Si eres un joven latino en la escuela intermedia y crees que ningún latino va a la universidad, aceptas que ese es tu destino”, concluyó Vargas para The Alumni Society.

Mariana Osorio Gumá was born in 1967 in Havana, Cuba, but when she was still a child, her family emigrated to Chile, then to Italy and finally to Mexico, where she currently resides.

“I usually say that I am Mexican by choice,” explains this Cuban-Mexican psychoanalyst and writer, who has just published in English for the U.S. market her most recent novel, When You Get to the Other Side (Cinco Puntos Press, 2022). The book follows the adventures of a twelve-year-old Cuban girl named Emilia and her fifteen-year-old broth er Gregorio who lose their curandera grandmother and have to scrape to gether the only money they have to pay coyotes to cross over to the U.S. to meet their father.

“Of course the experience of exile (from Cuba to Chile and from Chile to Mexico) has impacted my existence deep ly, therefore it is reflected in my writing,” admits the author.

“Surely that has made me particular ly interested in giving voice to migrant

children, because I have experienced firsthand everything that such a situa tion impacts on the life of a human be ing. Writing about it is a way of reliving it and also of creating a memory through fiction,” she adds.

When You Get to the Other Side was born not only from her interest in giv ing a voice to migrant children - “To go deeper inside, to imagine their desires, their motors, their fantasies, their ori gins” - but also from a certain desire to denounce circumstances that are erased from memory.

“I think fiction is the best way to ac count for reality. It is the way the psyche tolerates it better and, thus, whoever reads, eventually, will be able to empa thize with the pain and difficult circum stances of others. Especially children im mersed in very complicated situations,” she says.

In addition to the two brothers, one of the most prominent characters in the novel is their grandmother, Mama Lochi, an elderly healer. And this is no coinci dence.

M ariana Osorio Gumá nació en 1967 en La Habana, pero cuan do era aún una niña, su familia emigró a Chile, después a Italia y finalmente a México, donde reside.

“Suelo decir que soy mexicana por elec ción”, explica esta psicoanalista y escrito ra cubano-mexicana, que acaba de publi car en inglés para el mercado de Estados Unidos su novela más reciente, Cuando llegues al otro lado (When You Get to the Other Side, Cinco Puntos Press, 2022).

El libro sigue las peripecias de Emilia, una niña cubana de 12 años, y de su her mano Gregorio, de 15, que tras perder a su abuela curandera se ven forzados a reunir el único dinero que tienen para pagar a los coyotes con el fin de cruzar a los Estados Unidos y reunirse con su padre.

“Por supuesto que la experiencia del exilio (de Cuba a Chile y de Chile a Méxi co) ha impactado mi existencia profunda mente, por lo tanto se refleja en mi escritu ra”, admite la autora.

“Seguramente eso ha marcado que me interese particularmente por dar voz a las infancias migrantes, pues he experimenta

do en carne propia todo lo que una situa ción como esa impacta en la vida de un ser humano. Escribir sobre ello es una mane ra de remontarlo y también de crear una memoria a través de la ficción”, añade.

Cuando llegues al otro lado nació no solo de su interés por darles voz a las in fancias migrantes, “adentrarme, imagi nar sus deseos, sus motores, sus fantasías, sus orígenes”, sino también de cierto deseo de denunciar circunstancias que quedan borradas de la memoria.

“Creo que la ficción es la mejor manera de dar cuenta de la realidad. Es la manera en que la psique lo tolera mejor y, así, quien lee eventualmente podrá empatizar con el dolor y las circunstancias difíciles de otros, especialmente de los niños y niñas inmersos en situaciones muy complicadas”, comenta.

LA SABIDURÍA

DE LOS ABUELOS

Además de los dos hermanos, uno de los personajes más destacados de la nove la es su abuela, Mamá Lochi, una anciana curandera. Y no es algo casual.

THE WISDOM OF GRANDPARENTS

“I believe that the wisdom of the elderly, of grandparents, is often close to the wisdom of children. Maybe that’s why there are so many communicating vessels between them. Mama Lochi embodies that wisdom. As a grandmother, as an elder and as a healer,” Osorio explains.

According to the author, healers (curanderos) are living and active characters in rural Mexican communities. They transmit visions of the existence of the world or worlds that is very enriching even if it is not the “official” vision. Or just because of that. “When a healer is really a healer, you have to believe him or her: he or she will always have an unpublished view of the inner truths, of the body, of the soul, and will also have something relevant to say about some situations that concern the community,” she says.

A passionate reader since childhood, Osorio began writing poetry and short stories for herself, until, at her thirties, she enrolled in the Dynamic School of Writers directed by Mario Bellatin in Mexico. “Then I took ownership of my vocation. And I fully understood that a vocation is a call that seems to come from outside, but that comes from the deepest and truest part of one’s being. Without writing and reading, I couldn’t live”.

She is the author of several books, including the novels El Paraíso de las moscas (2010), published in Mexico and Spain; Tal vez vuelvan los pájaros (2014), winner of the 2013 Lipp Brasserie Prize, an award given to the most outstanding emerging novels in Latin America; Escucha las sombras bajo el palmar (2015), as well as the book of short stories Las siete vidas de un gato (2019). She is now working on a noir trilogy about child trafficking. “There is a lot to say about that topic from fiction, and personally, I find it fundamental to explore it from literature,” comments Osorio, who defines herself as a passionate about books and a fervent defender of the transformative power of reading. In her spare time, she is dedicated to the coordination of the Colectivo Lucha Libris, a traveling and self-managed library, which travels some roads in Mexico, creating community libraries and sharing readings from around the world, especially in rural areas, and quite devastated, of this country. z

“Creo que la sabiduría de los ancianos, de los abuelos, suele aproximarse a la sabiduría de los niños. Tal vez por eso hay tantos vasos comunicantes entre ellos. Mamá Lochi encarna esa sabiduría. Como abuela, como anciana y como curandera”, explica Osorio.

Según la autora, los curanderos son personajes vivos y activos en las comunidades rurales mexicanas. Transmiten visiones de la existencia del mundo o de los mundos que es muy enriquecedora aunque no sea la visión “oficial”. O justo por eso. “Cuando un curandero lo es de verdad, hay que creerle: tendrá siempre una panorámica inédita sobre las verdades interiores del cuerpo, del alma, y también tendrá algo relevante que decir sobre algunas situaciones que atañen a lo comunitario”, dice.

Lectora apasionada desde niña, Osorio empezó escribiendo poesía y relatos cortos, hasta que al cumplir los treinta se matriculó en la Escuela Dinámica de escritores que dirigía en México Mario Bellatin: “Entonces me apropié de mi vocación y entendí plenamente que una vocación es un llamado que parece provenir de afuera, pero que viene desde lo más profundo y verdadero del propio ser. Sin escribir y leer, no podría vivir”.

Es autora de varios libros, entre los que destacan las novelas El Paraíso de las moscas (2010), editada en México y España; Tal vez vuelvan los pájaros (2014), ganadora del Premio Lipp Brasserie 2013, otorgado a lo más destacado de la novela emergente en América Latina; Escucha las sombras bajo el palmar (2015) y el libro de cuentos Las siete vidas de un gato (2019).

Paris spoke to Al DÍA News about the difficulties she expe rienced during the pandemic, when all her processes came to a halt along with the rest of the world. Her brand, which had already begun exporting to oth er countries, was put on hold due to the coronavirus, but her dreams never stopped growing.

“I always dreamed of help ing Latinos with my brand”, said the designer, who traveled to New York after the isolation measures were lifted to contin ue learning about the fashion world.

portunity to meet with important people in the industry, who opened doors for her to continue with her projects in the new country. “In one month, I set up my com pany in the United States and in half an hour I managed to get the funds to do my catwalks again”, Paris mentioned. “It was there when I understood that my purpose was to help Latinos formalize their busi nesses here”.

It is from that personal experience that she decided to create the “Emprende con Paris” program, as part of the “Empren de hoy”platform, an initiative that seeks to support Latino entrepreneurs in the United States who want to get ahead with their business ideas. “For me it is import ant that everybody can fulfill their dreams,

and through fashion I have been able to connect with many of them”, said the Co lombian.

During the New York Fashion Week, Paris presented her DREAMS collection, inspired by the dreams of each of the en trepreneurs she worked with to bring it to life. From patterns to colors, each gar ment conveyed the designer’s message.

The Colombian also told Al DÍA News that through fashion she seeks to create a community of dreamers who can transmit their essence in each gar ment, as she has managed to do.

With her new project, she not only seeks to inspire Latinos, but also to give them the right tools so they can achieve all their goals in the land of dreams.z

The Garces Foundation gala is a showcase of the region’s gastronomy scene, but what is most important is what the fundraiser supports. The Garces Foundation was founded in memory of a butcher named Felipe who while working at the restaurant Tinto succumbed to thyroid cancer in 2010. The Garces Foundation ensures that the immigrant community has access to and knows where to find the resources needed to live healthy, educated, nutritious lives. They be lieve everyone should have access to the affordable healthcare and educational resources they need.

Over 20 restaurants and chefs volunteered their time to not only to share samples of their flagship cuisines, but to support Garces and his mission. Hundreds of people came for the festiv ities and participated in silent auctions and two huge live auctions which raised thousands of dol lars. In the first auction, bidders had a chance to have a meal prepared by three James Beard Award winners: Michael Solomon, Marc Vetri, and Jose Garces. The second auction was the chance to participate in a private cooking class for several people taught by James Beard Award-winning chefs Cristina Martinez, Greg Vernick and Jose Garces. INFLATION REDUCTION ACT INCLUDES HISTORIC MEASURES TO LOWER PRESCRIPTION DRUG PRICES

At a time when so many Amer icans are struggling with rising costs of everyday essentials like groceries and gas, the In ation Reduction Act of 2022 recently passed by the Senate is historic legisla tion that will lower the prices of prescrip tion drugs and put money back in the pockets of seniors. Millions of American seniors will see lower prices as a result of this bill, which requires Medicare to start negotiating the price of certain drugs, penalizes drug companies that increase their prices faster than in ation, caps se niors’ annual out-of-pocket costs for pre scription drugs in Medicare Part D, limits cost-sharing for insulin in Medicare drug plans and extends nancial assistance to help people afford health insurance.

The legislation will help revolu tionize the prescription drug mar ket and nally hold drug companies accountable for their prices. Some policies will take effect almost imme diately this year while others will be phased in. Here’s a quick rundown of what consumers can expect and when, if the bill is enacted.

back to the government. This provision will address brand name drug companies’ long-standing practice of increasing their prices year after year—often at more than twice the rate of in ation—and help reduce the amount seniors pay for their drug plan premiums and cost sharing.

Keeping Health Insurance Affordable for Millions. In addition to the prescription drug-related provisions, the In ation Re duction Act will also help adults under age 65 to purchase affordable health insurance. The legislation would continue current nancial assistance for low-income adults who purchase health insurance through state and federal exchanges. This assis tance completely covers the costs of pre miums for people with the lowest incomes and ensures that no one buying coverage on the exchanges pays more than 8.5 per

cent of their income towards premiums. Without this support, more than 3 million Americans might lose their health cover age because they could no longer afford it – especially those who are 50 and older, who pay the highest rates (up to three times more) for their coverage. This nancial as sistance would have expired at the end of 2022 but will now be available through 2025.

Overall, the In ation Reduction Act includes numerous provisions to make historic improvements in the health and wellbeing of older Americans, particular ly when it comes to affording prescription drugs. AARP worked for years supporting these provisions and helping to push them across the nish line, and we will continue to work to ensure that this law bene ts old er Americans for decades to come. z

Beyond the need to improve quality of life and pay for utilities, one of the most important things to do as an employee is to have a plan to save for retirement.

The plan has to be indicative of where that individual stands nancially in relation to factors such as life expectancy, quality of life and health, and then move forward accordingly.

The rst step is knowing how much you have in assets and what your spending rate is. From there, you can get an understanding of a target asset mix of cash, stocks, and bonds that work best.

For most, the best course of action is investing.

WSFS suggests that a key is making a list of your post-employment income sources — such as 401(k)s, IRAs, Social Security, and any taxable accounts.

A consultation with a nancial advisor can serve as an invaluable endeavor to help provide an objective understanding of what you have available and what is realistic moving forward. The advisor can also help you avoid any severe missteps that could throw off your retirement plans.

For cash investments, it is recommended to have cash on hand for emergencies, as unforeseen circumstances are always a possibility.

It may be a good idea to look for high-yield savings accounts, which are FDIC-insured and earn more than regular savings accounts.

Fixed income investments and bonds are another option. They are less volatile than stocks often are. You can look to the U.S. Treasuries, investment grade corporate bonds, and low-cost index ETFs (exchange-traded funds) to see if bonds are the best option for you.

• People ve to 11 years old should only get the original, monovalent booster shot, when eligible. At this time, it is not recommended that this age group get the new bivalent booster.

• People who are moderately or severely immunocompromised have different recommendations for COVID-19 vaccines, including boosters, and you should discuss these with your provider.

3. The right time to get a COVID-19 booster depends on two things: When you got your most recent COVID-19 shot (vaccine or booster) and whether you recently tested positive for COVID-19.

• You should be at least two months out from your last COVID-19 shot (vaccine or booster) before consid ering the new booster.

• If you have or are recovering from a COVID-19 infection, the CDC rec ommends that you rst complete your isolation period. The CDC also advises that you may delay the booster by three months from when your symptoms started or, if you had no symptoms, when you received a positive test.

4. The new shot is now the only avail able booster for people 12 and older. If you have not yet received a COVID-19 booster, the CDC recom mends you get the new booster shot. It provides better protection because it targets the original strain as well as the Omicron subvariants (BA.4 and BA.5).

5. There is no recommended waiting period between getting a COVID-19 booster shot and other vaccines.

That means you can get a COVID-19 booster and other vaccines, including a u vaccine, at the same visit.

WHAT HAPPENNED at Holmesburg

The apology from Philadelphia comes way too late, and it should be Penn that offers the real apology.

ast week, Philadelphia issued an apology that many have been waiting on for more than 50 years. The apology addressed the human experiments that were carried out by the University of Pennsylvania between the 1950s and 1970s on the predominantly Black population at Holmesburg Prison in the city’s Northeast.

For more than 20 years, the inmates at Holmesburg represented test subjects for a number of experimental pharmaceuticals, viruses, fungus, asbestos and dioxin — a component of Agent Orange, which ravaged generations after its use in the Vietnam War.

I first learned about what happened at Holmesburg Prison during my first journalism internship in 2018 when I sat in on an interview with Allen Hornblum, the writer behind Acres of Skin, the first book to ever lay bare what happened at the prison.

It tracks the more than 20 years that Penn dermatologist Albert Kligman used the prison’s predominantly Black population to test and observe a number of experimental dermatological treatments and diseases.

The book’s title is even a reference to what Kligman reportedly said upon first entering the prison in the 1950s, when the experiments began.

“All I saw before me were acres of skin,” he said. “It was like a farmer seeing a fertile field for the first time.”

That statement itself says all it needs to about the kind of person Kligman was.

When Hornblum first arrived at Holmesburg in the 1970s to lead an adult literacy program, he noticed an unusually high number of inmates covered in gauze pads and medical dressing. Upon deeper inspection, he learned the details of Kligman’s and the University of Pennsylvania’s dermatological experiments that were carried out over the previous two decades.

During the interview I got to observe back in 2018, Hornblum told me and my editor at the time who was conducting

the interview that the whole experience of going to Holmesburg was “shocking.”

“That experimentation business hit me hard immediately,” Hornblum said.

It was a combination of both the inhumanity on display in using actual humans for experiments, but more so the complete disregard for that lack of humanity on display from other people that worked in the prison.

“If there’s anything I want to stress to you is my frustration that — and I won’t say it happens all the time, but very frequently when I give a talk at a university, medical school, or doctors forum — somebody gets up and applauds my effort and wants to thank me for being the only one to recognize the problem. It flatters me, but it also irks me because the real question is: why did so many people for years, in fact, decades, observe it, be involved with it, and never think it was problematic?” Hornblum said.

I choose to take that viewpoint when thinking about what happened at Holmesburg to countless inmates over decades. The city’s apology is just a single band-aid on a gash that cuts down to the bone.

But it’s not just the city that needs to be held accountable.

It took the University of Pennsylvania until Aug. 21, 2021 — more than 70 years after Kligman first stepped foot in Holmesburg — fto finally take steps to sunset its lectureship in his name and change the name of the professorship that bore his name.

The University also announced a new effort to offer more opportunities and recruit more students from the surrounding community into its dermatology department, but it’s all minimal to the damage Kligman waged over decades.

To achieve a real solution, they should listen to the more than 200 that signed a petition in 2021 to pay reparations to Kligman’s surviving victims. That request unsurprisingly remains unanswered. z

La primera vez que me enteré de lo que ocurrió en la prisión de Holmesburg fue durante mis primeras prácticas de periodismo en el 2018, cuando me senté en una entrevista con Allen Hornblum, el escritor detrás de Acres of Skin, el primer libro que puso al descubierto lo que ocurrió en la prisión.

En aquel, el autor hace un seguimiento de los más de veinte años que el dermatólogo de Pennsylvania Albert Kligman utilizó a la población predominantemente negra de la prisión para probar y observar una serie de tratamientos y enfermedades dermatológicas experimentales.

El título del libro es incluso una referencia a lo que Kligman habría dicho al entrar por primera vez en la prisión en la década de los cincuenta, cuando comenzaron los experimentos: “Todo lo que vi ante mí fueron hectáreas de piel. Era como un agricultor que ve un campo fértil por primera vez”. Esta afirmación dice todo lo necesario sobre el tipo de persona que era Kligman.

Cuando Hornblum llegó por primera vez a Holmesburg, en la década de los setenta, para dirigir un programa de alfabetización de adultos, observó un número inusualmente alto de reclusos cubiertos de gasas y vendajes médicos. Tras una inspección más profunda, se enteró de los detalles de los experimentos dermatológicos de Kligman y la Universidad de Pensilvania

que se llevaron a cabo durante las dos décadas anteriores.

Durante la entrevista, Hornblum nos dijo a mí y a mi editor de entonces, que era quien realizaba la entrevista, que toda la experiencia de ir a Holmesburg fue “impactante”. Fue una combinación de la inhumanidad mostrada en el uso de seres humanos reales para los experimentos con la completa indiferencia por esa falta de humanidad expresada hacia otras personas que trabajaban en la prisión.

Según Hornblum, “Si hay algo que quiero recalcar es mi frustración por el hecho de que —y no diré que sucede todo el tiempo, pero sí con mucha frecuencia cuando doy una charla en una universidad, una facultad de medicina o un foro de médicos— alguien se levanta y aplaude mi esfuerzo y quiere agradecerme por ser el único en reconocer el problema. Me halaga, pero también me irrita porque la verdadera pregunta es: ¿por qué tanta gente durante años, de hecho, décadas, observó el problema, se involucró en él, y nunca pensó que fuera disputable?”.

He decidido adoptar ese punto de vista al pensar en lo que ocurrió en Holmesburg a innumerables reclusos durante décadas.

La disculpa de la ciudad es solo una curita en una herida que llega hasta el hueso. Pero no es solo la ciudad la que debe rendir cuentas. La Universidad de Pensilvania tardó hasta el 21 de agosto del 2021 —más de setenta años después de que Kligman pisara por primera vez Holmesburg— en tomar finalmente medidas para poner fin a la cátedra que dictaba en su nombre.

La Universidad también ha anunciado un nuevo esfuerzo para ofrecer más oportunidades y reclutar a más estudiantes de la comunidad circundante en su departamento de dermatología, pero todo es mínimo ante el daño que Kligman causó durante décadas.

Para lograr una solución real, deberían escuchar a las más de 200 personas que firmaron una petición en el 2021 para que se pague una reparación a las víctimas supervivientes de Kligman. Esa petición, como es lógico, sigue sin respuesta. z
