In the Philadelphia 2023 mayoral elections, not only the future of the city is at stake, but also the legacy of William Penn, which serves as a guide to evaluate the actions of those who has the responsibility to manage it. is is well explained by Hernán Guaracao, Founder and CEO of AL DÍA, in his analysis in Al Cierre.

In addition, whoever is elected will become the 100th mayor, a symbolic and not insigni cant gure.

An independent poll by the Committee of Seventy concludes that it is not clear who the mayor will be. e mathematics establishes that anyone can make the leap this May 16th when the primary is held. e Republican card in the home stretch is David Oh.

In the meantime, AL DÍA presents in this edition the similarities and di erences between the aspirants. At the top of the list is Rebecca Rhynhart (18 %), who has positioned herself between progressivism and moderate arguments. “We need a mayor who has courage” was one of her phrases in an interview with AL DÍA. He has a progressive view on issues such as public safety and the opioid crisis. And she is moderate on issues such as increasing employment opportunities.

Cherelle Parker, with 17 %, has the broadest support. She has the backing of Maria Quiñones Sánchez. For public safety, she proposes “zero tolerance for any misuse and abuse of authority”. She has insisted on a “greener, cleaner Philadelphia” environment to help reduce crime in the city.

ird is Helen Gym, with 15 %. She is a long-time supporter of public schools, immigrants and progressive policies. is year she has proposed changes from law enforcement to school funding. On the issue of public safety, she has called for a state of emergency. On education, she has said she would “ ght like crazy” at the state level to get more funding for city schools.

Fourth is Allan Domb, the real estate mogul, with 14 %. He has been the candidate who has invested the most resources in the campaign, to the tune of $7 million.

He is considered a moderate. His security proposal calls for a gun violence emergency, with action against illegal guns, as well as a public health emergency in Kensington. His education proposal includes schools teaching technology and entrepreneurship to better prepare students.

Je Brown is h in the poll (11 %) and is considered the only non-politician among the candidates. He has reiterated that poverty is the main problem facing the city, which includes all of today’s other di culties. Among other things, he proposes cutting red tape for businesses.

Last in the poll are Amen Brown and Warren Bloom (2 %), and Judge James DeLeon (1 %). z

Una encuesta independiente, del Comité de los Setenta, deja como conclusión que no está claro quién será el alcalde. Las matemáticas permiten establecer que cualquiera puede dar el salto este 16 de mayo cuando se realicen las primarias. La carta republicana en la recta nal es David Oh.

Mientras tanto, AL DÍA presenta en esta edición las similitudes y diferencias entre los aspirantes. La primera de la lista es Rebecca Rhynhart (18 %), quien se ha posicionado entre el progresismo y los argumentos moderados. “Necesitamos un alcalde que tenga coraje”, fue una de sus frases en una entrevista con AL DÍA. Ha insistido en una “Filadel a más verde y limpia” en lo ambiental para ayudar a reducir la delincuencia en la ciudad.

La tercera es Helen Gym, con 15 %. Es defensora por años de las escuelas públicas, de los inmigrantes y de políticas progresistas. Este año ha propuesto cambios desde cómo se aplica la ley hasta la nanciación de escuelas. En el tema de la seguridad pública, ha planteado la declaratoria del estado de emergencia. Para la educación, ha manifestado que “lucharía como una loca” a nivel estatal para conseguir más fondos para las escuelas de la ciudad.

El cuarto es Allan Domb, el magnate inmobiliario, con 14 %. Ha sido el candidato que más recursos ha invertido en la campaña, llegando a 7 millones de dólares. Se le considera moderado. Su propuesta de seguridad plantea una emergencia contra la violencia armada, con acciones contra las armas ilegales, además de una emergencia de salud pública en Kensington. Su propuesta educativa incluye que las escuelas enseñen tecnología y espíritu empresarial, para preparar mejor a los estudiantes.

Je Brown aparece en el quinto lugar de la encuesta (11 %), considerado el único no político entre los candidatos. Ha reiterado que la pobreza es el principal problema que tiene la ciudad, en donde se incluyen las demás di cultades de hoy. Entre otras cosas, propone la reducción de los trámites burocráticos para los negocios.

Dr. Maria Elena Bottazzi is a microbiologist who studies and has helped create treatments for various neglected diseases over her career.

In 2022, she and her science partner Dr. Peter Hotez were nominated for a Nobel Prize for their open-science, patent-free COVID-19 vaccine.

PATH TO HER PASSION

Bottazzi was born in Italy, but raised in Honduras.

During an interview with AL DÍA, she explained that since she spent her entire life — from childhood to university graduation — there, “my roots are very Central American.”

Her interest in medicine started young, while her entry into microbiology came later.

Bottazzi studied microbiology at Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Honduras before studying cell regulation at the University of Miami. It was there that she met and befriended Dr. Jessie Villanueva, who was also interviewed.

Bottazzi noted that she and Villanueva complement each other well in the lab. e multiculturalism between them and other scientists in the lab made the environment interesting, both in terms of their backgrounds and their training.

Bottazzi and Villanueva’s closeness led them to work as lab mates with Dr. Rick Assoian at the University of Pennsylvania.

A er she nished her education, she was introduced to Dr. Hotez, who was building a team for a new microbiology department he was launching at George Washington University.

Villanueva is now an associate professor of the molecular & cellular oncogenesis program at the Wistar Institute’s Melanoma Research Center.

La Dra. María Elena Bottazzi es una microbióloga que estudia y ha ayudado a crear tratamientos para varias enfermedades olvidadas a lo largo de su carrera.

En el 2022, ella y su socio cientí co, el Dr. Peter Hotez, fueron nominados al Premio Nobel por su vacuna COVID-19, de ciencia abierta y sin patentes.

EL CAMINO HACIA SU PASIÓN

Bottazzi nació en Italia, pero se crió en Honduras. Durante una entrevista con AL DÍA, explicó que, dado que pasó allí desde la infancia hasta su graduación universitaria, sus raíces “son muy centroamericanas”.

Su interés por la medicina comenzó joven, mientras que su entrada en la microbiología llegó más tarde.

Bottazzi estudió microbiología en la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Honduras antes de estudiar regulación celular en la Universidad de Miami. Allí conoció y entabló amistad con la Dra. On Tuesday, April 25, 2023, President Joe Biden ocially announced his 2024 reelection bid, which will see him climb the ranking to number three on the all-time list of oldest presidential candidates in U.S. history. He’ll be 81 years old in November 2024.

With that age, Biden brings decades of experience to government leadership, but on the campaign trail it’s all about the team a candidate can assemble around themselves that is the key to their success.

CHAVEZ RODRIGUEZ AT THE HELM

Leading Biden’s 2024 reelection campaign as the chief of sta is longtime White House sta er Julie Chavez Rodriguez. e granddaughter of legendary labor leader Cesar Chavez, Chavez Rodriguez rst got her start in D.C. as part of the Obama White House and should Biden win in 2024, would be the rst Latina to ever lead a successful presidential campaign.

“It makes sense to bring someone with her bona des to Biden’s campaign leadership team,” Maria Teresa Kumar, president and CEO of Voto Latino, said about Chávez Rodriguez’s appointment.

Her roots go back to Delano, California where her grandfather led his successful grape strike between 1965 and 1970. Chavez Rodriguez was born there eight years a er the strike concluded, in 1978, to Linda Chavez Rodriguez and Arturo Rodriguez, both full-time volunteers with the United Farm Workers of America (UFWA).

She grew up in nearby Tehechapi, attended high school there, and then went on to the University of California at Berkeley, where she got

a degree in Latin American Studies. During her Summers, Chavez Rodriguez would get a taste of her organizing roots, working with both UFWA and AFL-CIO at di erent times.

Between 2001 and 2008, Chavez Rodriguez was also the program director at UFWD before being tapped by the Obama White House in 2009. From there, she rose the ranks of Obama’s administration, eventually serving as a Special Assistant to the president.

When Donald Trump came into o ce, Chavez Rodriguez went to work for Kamala Harris when she was a U.S. Senator, and then was hired to her short-lived presidential campaign in 2019.

As Joe Biden emerged as the 2020 Democratic nominee, Chavez Rodriguez took another campaign post as a senior advisor overseeing Latino outreach. With the title, she was the highest-ranking Latina on the campaign and took that into a job at the White House, most recently rising to be senior advisor to the president ahead of the 2022 midterm elections.

Much like her political career, María Quiñones Sánchez did not immediately side with her fellow Democrat establishment upon dropping out from the 2023 Philadelphia Mayor’s race. She took her time announcing who she would eventually endorse to be the city’s 100th mayor.

In the end though, it was the same as the party establishment. On May 2, 2023, Quiñones Sánchez joined her fellow current and former Philly Latino public o cials in endorsing Cherelle Parker to be the next mayor.

LIVED EXPERIENCE WAS KEY

In explaining the decision to AL DÍA, Quiñones Sánchez leaned heavily on lived experience, which she said best quali es Parker to take on her Agenda Latina and lead the city of Philadelphia.

“I felt it was important that the next mayor knows, feels, and has lived the challenges but also understands the opportunities for the city. Cherelle Parker represents the person closest aligned to why I made the decision to run for mayor and why she should be mayor,” said Quiñones Sánchez.

Parker, like Quiñones Sánchez, was a protégé of Marian Tasco, who “represented the progressive movement of the 80s and 90s in the city of Philadelphia.”

“We share many of our experiences, how we entered politics, who we learned from and who we value, and their ability to create a really broad base coalition,” Quiñones Sánchez said.

Of the other candidates she sought to interview, Quiñones Sánchez said she was le with the impression that their approaches fell short of awareness and urgency to not only lead a diverse populace but to bring them into the mayor’s cabinet.

“When you come from a historically marginalized community, and you get into government, you understand and value how important it is to have access,” she said.

In joining Parker, Quiñones Sánchez completes the North Philadelphia Latino coalition of support for her campaign. Prior to Quiñones Sánchez announcing her support, Parker picked up endorsements from State Reps. Jose Giral, Danilo Burgos and former State Rep. Angel Cruz. It’s arguably the rst time in two decades that Cruz and Quiñones Sánchez have been on the same page about something involving local politics.

GYM’S NATIONAL LATINO COALITION

But while Parker has seen her broad Latino support come from within Philly — the only independent poll conducted gave Parker the most Latino support of any candidate — she’s not the only one to get the attention (or endorsement) of Latinos in general in the race.

Helen Gym has also picked up some major endorsements from both national Latino leaders and organizations.

Back on March 15, Gym was endorsed by Make the Road Action, the political arm of the larger Make the Road, which is the largest Latino organizing group in Pennsylvania, with more than 13,000 members across the Commonwealth. A little more than a month later, Gym went national with the endorsement of United We Dream Action, the political arm of one of the largest immigrant advocacy groups in the U.S. It supports all immigrants across the U.S., but does skew toward youth and Latinos.

Polls weren’t really a thing in 2023’s Philadelphia Mayoral Election until around two weeks ago, as the good government group Committee of Seventy dropped the rst independent survey of the race.

e results con rmed what many have already known to be true — no one knows who will be the 100th mayor of Philadelphia and those that guess are just taking a shot in the dark.

Of the nine candidates that will be on the ballot in another week, ve came out of the independent poll in a dead heat and undecided voters represented 20% of those that responded — a higher percentage than any single candidate garnered. e margin of error for the poll was plus or minus 3.8%. It means in theo-

ry, everyone on the ballot still has a chance to win, even those that got 1%.

AL DÍA interviewed six of those remaining on the ballot — Cherelle Parker, Rebecca Rhynhart, Allan Domb, Helen Gym, Je Brown, and Judge James DeLeon. It did not interview Amen Brown, Warren Bloom or Delscia Gray.

In total, AL DÍA interviewed nine candidates, including Derek Green and María Quiñones Sánchez, who have dropped out, and the sole Republican candidate David Oh.

THE CONTROLLER

At the top of the pack by just one percentage point (18%) is former City Controller Rebecca Rhynhart, who has run a campaign walking the line between progressivism and the moderate talking points of

more conservative Democratic candidates. In the process, she’s also leaned heavily on her prior experience as both City Controller and its budget director.

“We need a mayor that has courage,” she said in an interview with AL DÍA back on Friday, Feb. 17.

at “courage” is something Rhynhart showed in her time as City Controller, as her reports revealed the frequent oversight in city government operations. It didn’t make her many friends in that same city government — especially Mayor Jim Kenney — but Rhynhart said it has made her plenty of fans on the campaign trail to replace the outgoing leader.

As mayor, Rhynhart proposes a mix of both progressive policies regarding things like public safety and the opioid crisis, and more moderate approaches to equitable economic development and increasing job opportunities.

On public safety, Rhynhart has a sixpoint plan that calls for a state of emergency, evidence-based violence intervention programs, and using her 2022 police department audit to inform more reforms — like bringing back more o cers that were found to be abusing the department’s injured leave policy, auditing its Operation Pinpoint strategy to target violent o enders in communities and implementing civilianization to boost o cer numbers on the street.

For the opioid crisis, Rhynhart o ers a vision of better inter-departmental coordination under the direction of what she’s calling an “opioid czar.”

“We, as a city, fund signi cant operations, but they’re not coordinated for the best care for those that are on the street and su ering from substance use disorder,” she told AL DÍA

Using her nancial background, Rhynhart also proposes a city that cuts red tape for small businesses, tax reform and a promise of 40% of the city’s contracting dollars going toward minority-owned businesses.

THE PARTY’S CANDIDATE

Coming second (at 17%) in the independent poll was Cherelle Parker, who has built arguably the broadest support coalition in the race among establishment wards and major unions.

Among Latinos, the poll found Parker was favored the most, at 28%. All of the Latino old guard in politics — including María Quiñones

Sánchez — have also thrown their support behind the former Majority Whip in City Council and PA State Rep. from Northwest Philly.

Parker’s message on the campaign trail has been shaped by more than a few catchphrases when discussing the major issues. For example:

Public safety — a community policing approach that will bring 300 more uniformed o cers to neighborhoods across the city, but “zero tolerance for any misuse and abuse of authority.” She emphasizes it because she’s been called out on the campaign trail for her appeared comfort with a return to a form of stop-and-frisk.

Opioid crisis — no “youse people policy making,” which is a direct reference to her opposition to safe injection sites.

Environment+street cleaning: Parker speaks of a “greener, cleaner Philadelphia,” which she says will also reduce the city’s crime problem.

On economics, Parker told AL DÍA of leveraging more investment in technology to make the process of working with the city more seamless and developing more private-public partnerships to further her mission for Philly.

“We have to stop thinking that we need everything done via legislation. We have a strong mayoral form of government. If I thought that the only thing we could do to move Philadelphia forward was to enact it through legislation, I would still be a member of the City Council,” Parker told AL DÍA

THE PROGRESSIVE POWERHOUSE

In third place on the poll, but only three percentage points behind Rhynhart (at 15%) is Helen Gym. e twoterm City Councilmember, former teacher and longtime advocate for public schools, immigrants and progressive policies has seen a lot of hate (some warranted, some not) on the campaign trail, but more than anything, it’s a testament to the movement she leads and the power it’s garnered since she was rst elected to City Council in 2016.

“In 2016, I ran for a very speci c reason. And that was largely because the city had just closed down 30 public schools,” she told AL DÍA. “And I felt like this city was actually not going to be able to rise if it le the core functions of government behind.”

e message for Gym’s campaign for mayor in 2023 is all about systems change — from the way the city approaches law enforcement to school funding. Much like Rhynhart, much of Gym’s solutions also hinge on her being a better coordinator of city departments.

For public safety, Gym said she’d call a state of emergency and organize weekly cabinet meetings with department heads and target blocks where violence is the worst. In terms of approaches, Gym told AL DÍA she’d expand her previously-piloted mobile crisis response units to respond to instances of mental health crises encountered on the beat.

On education — her bread and butter — Gym said she’d “ ght like hell” at the state level to get more funding for the city’s schools, especially a er it was determined PA’s previous funding model was unconstitutional. Her approach is “investment-based,” and involves making the superintendent “a lead part of the mayor’s cabinet and vice versa.”

“I do want the city and the school systems to be united and to be held accountable for one another,” she said.

Part of the investment also includes a 10-year school modernization program and a new database for facility issues.

DARK HORSE DOMB?

Coming in fourth in the independent poll was real estate magnate Allan Domb (at 14%). Of any candidate, Domb has poured by far the most money into his campaign — $7 million of his own personal fortune per the last campaign nance reports.

Policy-wise, Domb is a moderate, but does agree with his more liberal counterparts on some things. His 10-point public safety plan calls for a crime emergency for gun violence, “aggressively” cracking down on illegal guns, a public health emergency and Kensington, and tripling funding to recruit more police o cers, to name a few.

“I will have a public safety cabinet consisting of the District Attorney, the police commissioner, the Attorney General,, FBI, ATF, security for PATCO and SEPTA,” Domb said in an interview with AL DÍA

Domb’s other major talking point at AL DÍA was education, which addresses the root problem of poverty and lack of opportunity that leads to people engaging in illegal activity. In a Domb Philadelphia, he envisions schools that teach both technology and entrepreneurship to better prepare high school students for the ever-digitizing world of 2023 to compete for jobs, or create something on their own.

ICARUS BROWN?

In polls commissioned by his own campaign, Je Brown is ahead in the race, but the independent one by Committee of Seventy put him in h at 11%.

ere’s still a major chance the only non-politician in the race could be Philly’s next mayor, but the constant blows to his campaign — whether an investigation by the Philly Board of Ethics or his “lynching” comments — have taken a toll and made him the most common target of all the candidates.

When he spoke to AL DÍA, Brown leaned into his outsider label and pushed the di erent vision he could o er with his non-politician experience.

“I feel we need a bolder mayor that is going to push through the politics of things that tend not to like changes, that they have their own deals, their special interests and the things that aren’t necessarily helpful to the citizens,” he said.

Brown’s platform puts poverty as the top issue, and solving it would address the city’s other issues.

e solution he o ered to AL DÍA was through getting more support to Black and Brown businesses with creating micro grants at the city level, and cutting down red tape to operate a business in the city.

On gun violence, Brown proposed more investment into forensics to help solve more crimes and to better train ocers to deal with mental health crises.

THE REST

Amen Brown and Warren Bloom came in at 2% in the poll and Judge James DeLeon, who told AL DÍA about his silver-bullet Local Incident Management System, was bottom with 1%.

It’s anyone’s election on May 16.

THE REPUBLICAN CHALLENGER

Whoever wins next Tuesday will face o with Republican nominee David Oh in the November general election — on Nov. 7. Oh’s message, while representing the Republican Party, is very similar to the more moderate Democrats in the race. He calls for police to be empowered to enforce “laws on the books” regarding gun violence and wants expanded city services for those struggling with opioid addiction.

Like many Democratic candidates — from progressive to moderate — Oh is also in favor of major tax reform to make the city friendly for small business and residents alike.

He can relax next Tuesday and begin to plan for his opponent. z

Los sondeos no eran relevantes en las elecciones a la Alcaldía de Filadel a 2023 hasta hace unas dos semanas, cuando el grupo de buen gobierno Comité de los Setenta lanzó la primera encuesta independiente de la carrera.

Los resultados con rmaron lo que muchos ya sabían que era cierto: nadie sabe quién será el alcalde número 100 de Filadel a, y los que lo adivinan se limitan a lanzar un tiro al aire.

De los nueve candidatos que estarán en la papeleta dentro de una semana, cinco salieron de la encuesta independiente en un empate. Los votantes indecisos representaron el 20 % de los que respondieron, un porcentaje más alto que el obtenido por cualquier candidato. LA CANDIDATA DEL PARTIDO

En segundo lugar, con el 17 % en la encuesta independiente, se situó Cherelle Parker, que ha construido posiblemente la coalición de apoyo más amplia en la carrera entre los distritos del establecimiento y los principales sindicatos.

Entre los latinos, la encuesta reveló que Parker era la más favorecida, con el 28 %. Toda la vieja guardia latina de la política, incluida María Quiñones Sánchez, también ha dado su apoyo a la exportavoz de la mayoría en el Ayuntamiento y diputada estatal por el noroeste de Filadel a.

“Tenemos que dejar de pensar que necesitamos que todo se haga a través de la legislación. Tenemos una sólida forma de gobierno municipal. Si pensara que lo único que podemos hacer para que Filadel a avance es promulgarlo a través de la legislación, seguiría siendo miembro del Ayuntamiento”, declaró Parker a AL DÍA

LA FUERZA PROGRESISTA

En tercer lugar en la encuesta, pero solo tres puntos porcentuales por detrás de Rhynhart , está Helen Gym con 15 %. La concejala durante dos mandatos, antigua profesora y defensora desde hace mucho tiempo de las escuelas públicas, los inmigrantes y las políticas progresistas, ha visto mucho odio (algunos justi cados, otros no) en la campaña electoral, pero, más que nada, es un testimonio del movimiento que lidera y del poder que ha acumulado desde que fue elegida por primera vez para el Ayuntamiento, en el 2016.

“En el 2016, me presenté por una razón muy concreta: la ciudad acababa de cerrar 30 escuelas públicas. Y sentí que esta ciudad no iba a poder levantarse si dejaba atrás las funciones centrales del gobierno”, manifestó a AL DÍA. El mensaje de la campaña de Gym para la Alcaldía 2023 gira en torno al cambio de sistemas, desde la forma en que la ciudad aborda la aplicación de la ley hasta la nanciación de las escuelas. Al igual que Rhynhart, gran parte de las soluciones de Gym también dependen de que sea una mejor coordinadora de los departamentos de la ciudad.

En cuanto a la seguridad pública, Gym dijo que declararía el estado de emergencia, organizaría reuniones semanales del gabinete con los jefes de departamento y se centraría en las zonas con mayor violencia. En cuanto a los enfoques, Gym dijo a AL DÍA que ampliaría sus unidades móviles de manejo de crisis para responder a los casos de salud mental que se produzcan en las calles.

El otro gran tema de conversación de Domb con AL DÍA fue la educación, que aborda el problema de fondo de la pobreza y la falta de oportunidades, que lleva a la gente a dedicarse a actividades ilegales. En la Filadel a de Domb, imagina escuelas que enseñen tecnología y espíritu empresarial, para preparar mejor a los estudiantes de secundaria en un mundo digitalizado, para competir por puestos de trabajo o crear algo por su cuenta.

¿ICARUS BROWN?

En las encuestas encargadas por su propia campaña, Je Brown va por delante en la carrera, pero la independiente del Comité de los Setenta le sitúa en el quinto lugar, con el11 %.

Todavía hay muchas posibilidades de que el único no político de la carrera sea el próximo alcalde de Filadel a, pero los constantes golpes a su campaña —ya sea una investigación de la Junta de Ética de Filadel a o sus comentarios sobre el “linchamiento”— le han pasado factura y le han convertido en el blanco más común de todos los candidatos.

En cuanto a la violencia con armas de fuego, Brown propuso invertir más en medicina forense, para ayudar a resolver más delitos, y formar mejor a los agentes, para hacer frente a las crisis de salud mental.

EL RESTO

Amen Brown y Warren Bloom obtuvieron 2 % en la encuesta y el juez James DeLeon, que habló a AL DÍA de su Sistema de Gestión de Incidentes Locales, quedó en último lugar con el 1 %. Cualquiera puede ser elegido el 16 de mayo.

EL ASPIRANTE REPUBLICANO

Quien gane el próximo martes se enfrentará al candidato republicano David Oh en las elecciones generales del 7 de noviembre. El mensaje de Oh, aunque representa al Partido Republicano, es muy similar al de los demócratas más moderados. Pide que se faculte a la Policía para hacer cumplir “las leyes en vigor” relativas a la violencia armada y desea que se amplíen los servicios municipales para quienes luchan contra la adicción a los opiáceos.

Chasing the American Dream, Filimón Alvarez was born in Zacatecas, Mexico, and moved to Aurora, Colorado. A er completing high school, the low-income student con icted about how to pay for college, joined the U.S. Marines, where he says, “I felt I could give back to the country that offered my family a better life.”

Alvarez spent eight years in the military, serving in the Iraq War (Operation Iraqi Freedom) and the war in Afghanistan (Operation Enduring Freedom) and leaving in 2014 to help his family while his father was sick.

He explains, not wanting to be “stereotyped as just a construction worker,” a er leaving the military and decided to obtain a higher education at the Community College of Aurora—excelling academically, he was able to transfer to the University of Colorado Denver (CU Denver), and becoming the rst college graduate in his family.

“A signi cant achievement that I am incredibly proud of,” assured Alvarez, who received the Alpha Rho Chi Award, which is given to graduating students from a school of architecture and has demonstrated leadership, and performed willing service for the school and department. He adds that this award is “a testament to my dedication and hard work, and it motivates me to keep pushing boundaries and strive for excellence.”

Today, he works for Alan Ford Architects and specializes in designing educational spaces for pre-K to 12 graders that inspire creativity and innovation in children. To Alvarez, architecture is “a way to give back to the community and create spaces that make a di erence in people’s lives.”

He is currently studying to be a licensed architect, and he credits much of his success to his studio professors, “who believed in me and saw my potential.”

Alvarez is the father of two young children, ages one and ve, and he is determined to set an example for them and inspire them to pursue their dreams— he is excited to continue to make a positive impact in the community and beyond.

OFF-GRID CONSTRUCTION IN ANTARCTICA

e National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), National Marine Fisheries Service (NOAA Fisheries), Antarctic Ecosystem Research Division (AERD), located at the Southwest Fisheries Center (SWFSC), has conducted ecosystem assessments since 1986.

In 2021, NOAA Fisheries awarded a contract for the replacement of the facilities at Cape Shirre , now called Holt Watters Field Camp, and the Colorado Building Workshop program at CU Denver, allowed students pursuing a Master of Architecture degree to design the rst buildings— Phase I, built at CU Denver campus in 19 weeks by 22 graduate students (40% woman) under the direction of Rick Sommerfeld, an associate professor in the College of Architecture and Planning.

However, Filimón shares that out of 40 students, only seven got chosen. Filimón was one of them.

e project was to design and construct green buildings to improve living conditions for four to eight rotating environmental scientists with the NOAA Fisheries that research the population dynamics, behavior, diet, and survival of Antarctic seabirds and pinnipeds. e scientists spend four to ve months conducting research. Filimón was one of the members that helped with the reassembly in Antarctica.

e materials were shipped to Antarctica for reassembly— a living area with a kitchen in one building, personal space, and sleeping quarters in a separate building—a 30-day process to reassemble the weather-resistant construction with an o -grid power system. Structural Insulated Panels (SIP); were used for the walls, oors, and ceiling due to the structural insulating capabilities and ease of construction—factoring the harsh climate of Antarctica, the buildings are equipped to collect rainwater and have photovoltaics.

Some design features include a mudroom entry, sleeping quarters, personal storage space, an open state-of-the-art kitchen and food storage areas, and windows deliberately positioned to capture stunning views of humpback whales, seals, and penguins,” reported CU Denver News.z

CONSTRUCCIÓN FUERA DE LA RED EN LA ANTÁRTIDA

La División de Investigación de Ecosistemas Antárticos, de la Administración Nacional Oceánica y Atmosférica (NOAA por sus siglas en inglés), Servicio Nacional de Pesquerías Marinas (NOAA Fisheries), situada en el Centro de Pesquerías del Suroeste (SWFSC), lleva realizando evaluaciones de ecosistemas desde 1986.

En el 2021, NOAA Fisheries adjudicó un contrato para la sustitución de las instalaciones de Cabo Shirre , ahora llamado Holt Watters Field Camp. El programa Colorado Building Workshop, de la CU Denver, permitió a los estudiantes que cursaban un Máster en Arquitectura diseñar los primeros edi cios (Fase I). Fueron construidos en el campus de la CU Denver en 19 semanas por 22 estudiantes graduados (40 % mujeres), bajo la dirección de Rick Sommerfeld, profesor asociado de la Facultad de Arquitectura y Plani cación.

“Algunas de las características del diseño son la entrada por un vestíbulo, los dormitorios, el espacio de almacenamiento personal, una cocina abierta de última generación y zonas de almacenamiento de alimentos, además de ventanas colocadas deliberadamente para captar impresionantes vistas de ballenas jorobadas, focas y pingüinos”, informó CU Denver News.z

The 23-year-old rapper released his sophomore album Laughing So Hard It Hurts last October, which landed on Pitchfork’s and The New York Times’ Top Albums of 2022 lists.

In January, MAVI launched a 40+ city international tour for the album, and will be making his second-to-last stop of the circuit at Philamoca on May 19.

MAVI’s considerable growth in popularity over the last few years can be attributed to the upstanding character conveyed in his music and public image. The Howard University undergrad continuously displays his knowledge of, and personal experiences with, the historic plight of Black people. He uses music to express moments of calmness and clarity within the systematically chaotic environment of Black communities in the U.S. MAVI is candid and blunt when breaking down the issues around him, but steers clear of glorifying or wallowing in it. He instead inspires listeners to change these circumstances themselves. This lyrical balance has given the rapper a sizable fansbase, with 2.3 million monthly Spotify listeners, and earned him respect among contemporaries. He’s worked with up-andcomers Tony Shhnow and Pink Siifu, as well as rap veterans Earl Sweatshirt and The Alchemist.

MAVI experienced the passing of multiple family members, getting an entire album shelved, and a serious car crash, while growing his fanbase exponentially, going on tour with Jack Harlow, and turning his passion of rapping into a viable career. He uses the album to explore both his joy and sorrow during this formative time.

Tracks like “Quiet On Set” show this dichotomy where MAVI confronts his emotions as he processes painful and joyous moments. “Reason!” explores another polarity, lled with subtle exes of his accomplishments that are followed by confessions of shortcomings in previous relationships. Keep stretch times short to start. Pick a few to do for just ve to 10 minutes total. You should also be gentle - stretching too hard might be painful, so just ease into it! Instead of reaching for your toes, start by going for just below your knee while sitting or standing. Breathe slowly and hold each stretch for 30-60 seconds. Try to do at least ve repetitions of each kind, and pay attention to your body – if something hurts, don’t push it!

If mobility issues prevent you from moving and stretching certain joints on your own, using stretch bands – aka resistance bands - is a wonderful option. Cleveland Clinic offers some easy leg and upper body stretch band instructions.

STATIC VS. DYNAMIC STRETCHING

SWIM, DANCE, OR ZUMBA

Why not have some fun while you stretch? Swimming, dancing, and Zumba combine stretching with physical exercise. Since you’re weightless in water, stretching is generally easier while swimming. Doing different strokes also lengthens multiple muscle groups with low joints impact. Another fun way to improve your exibility is dancing. You can take a class, watch a video, or put on your favorite music at home and dance your heart out! A bonus - remembering and performing a sequence of dance steps is good for your mind. Finally, Zumba combines dance and tness routines, and there are many types of live or at-home classes to suit every age group.

SOBRE EL CAMBIO DE TARIFAS PROPUESTO POR

PHILADELPHIA GAS WORKS 23 Y 24 DE MAYO DE 2023

A los clientes de PGW: Philadelphia Gas Works (PGW) presentó una solicitud ante la Comisión de Servicios Públicos de Pensilvania (PUC) para cambiar sus tarifas base de gas a partir del 28 de noviembre de 2023. Hearings on PGW’s Proposed Rate Change Scheduled

The PUC is the state agency that approves rates for public utilities. The PUC will investigate and hold hearings on the Company’s request. PGW must prove that its request is reasonable. After examining the evidence, the PUC may grant all, some, or none of the request or may reduce existing rates.

The PUC has scheduled four public input hearings, listed below, to take public testimony on PGW’s proposed overall rate increase. At these hearings, you can present your views to the PUC Administrative Law Judges (ALJs). Testimony given “under oath” is subject to cross-examination, recorded by the court reporter, and will be reviewed by the ALJs. Unsworn testimony will be “o the record” and not subject to cross-examination. Unsworn testimony will not be transcribed by the court reporter and will not be considered by the ALJs in their Recommended Decision. You do not have to be an expert. You can make the PUC aware of problems about PGW’s service, management, or discuss any issues related to the increase or other aspects of the case. You may also testify in support of the Company or its requested rate increase. This information can be helpful when the PUC investigates the rate request.

You will be asked to provide your name, phone number, email address, and the date and time of the telephonic public input hearing you wish to attend, and if you require an interpreter to participate in the hearing. Customers preregistered to testify must call into the hearings by dialing 1-866-560-8322 and entering PIN number 36676820. Customers do not need to pre-register in order to listen to a telephonic public input hearing, or to testify or attend an in-person public input hearing.

Month here again, the time has come to recognize and celebrate these institutions for their role in building diversity, equity, and inclusion in our workplaces and communities.

Diversity has been proven time and time again to improve outcomes in the business world. According to one study, diverse teams outperform individuals about 87% of the time when making business decisions. Gartner research recently found that “differences of age, ethnicity, gender, and other dimensions foster high performance.” And according to the World Economic Forum, companies with above-average diversity scores drive 45% average revenue from innovation, compared to just 26% from companies with below-average diversity.

It’s clear that prioritizing diversity in business is correlated with superior performance, which in turn can lead to more prosperous and stronger communities. But in order to continue this trend, local educational institutions must play a larger role in training a new generation of diverse individuals with the skills and opportunities necessary to thrive in today’s economy.

anks to their accessibility and affordability to diverse groups, community colleges are extremely well- positioned to advance diversity and inclusion in our local workforce. For starters, 51% of community college students in the U.S. identify as a race other than white, and 12% of students have a disability. Community colleges are also signi cantly less expensive than traditional four-year universities, making them more a ordable to all groups.

Community colleges also o er fast tracks to leadership positions and high-paying careers. By training students with the skills required by employers today in their own hometowns, community colleges can better align curriculum with local economic needs. is mutually bene cial approach allows minority students to gain access to attractive careers and enables companies to ll open positions with quali ed workers. Community colleges also leverage workforce development programs as an e cient way to quickly guide students not just to

a job – but to a lasting career. ey’re designed to o er students employment opportunities in positions that are in high demand and provide family-sustainable wages.

Apprenticeship and internship programs are other e ective ways for community colleges to engage with employers and determine their needs, then connect them with a diverse group of students eager to learn and take on jobs upon graduation.

is collaborative approach ensures educators are providing relevant opportunities that bene t students, businesses, and the broader community.

For those with the goal of eventually earning their bachelor’s degree, that option remains open for community college students. e quality of education at community colleges is extremely high and transferring to four-year colleges is simple and easy. However, the many that choose not to are also well-positioned for success.

At Montgomery County Community College, our commitment to equity runs deep. We recently held our annual three-day Presidential Symposium with an “Inspire Beyond Inclusion” theme and named two new Equity, Diversity and Belonging team leaders to advance the College’s ongoing efforts to make its campuses a place for all.

As an immigrant myself, I know rsthand the value higher education can o er our region’s citizens from all backgrounds. Getting the opportunity to provide pathways to a better life for people of color like me was a big part of what attracted me to my role at the College. We’ll never stop pushing for greater inclusion within our own four walls and across our communities. With the buy-in from our local governments and community members, I know community colleges across the country can continue doing the same.

Con el Mes de los Colegios Comunitarios, ha llegado el momento de reconocer y celebrar estas instituciones por su papel en la construcción de diversidad, equidad e inclusión en nuestros lugares de trabajo y comunidades. Se ha demostrado una y otra vez que la diversidad mejora los resultados en el mundo empresarial. While we remember this wondrous History facing the landmark election of this coming May 16th, 2023, for the number 100 Leader of Penn’s “Holy experiment,” the 4th Mayor of the City in 21st Century Philadelphia, we must re ect one single minute what got us started 341 years ago.

William Penn Was Not Wrong

In the year number 1682 of our Lord, a young man, only 38 years of age, arrived at the Delaware River Port, today known as Penn’s Landing.

He had a mandate from the King of England, Charles II, to establish a new British colony in the Americas that was going to be known later as “Pennsylvania” — because the ambitious new immigrant chose to use his father’s family name: e land of Mr. Penn, or Pennsylvania.

is stretch of new land, pretty simple and squarish, took the Delaware River as its Eastern border, and the Ohio River, near today’s Pittsburgh, as a marker for its Western border — natural frontiers of the small nation where great episodes of the U.S. history were about to unfold.

Gettysburg, for example, where 53,000 men killed each other during only three days, consecrating the battle eld President Abraham Lincon blessed with his secular prayer standing in this Holy Ground, indeed where the bloodiest clash of our Civil War, over 160 years ago, took place in Central Pennsylvania, starting one sunny day, on July 1, 1863.

171 years before, in 1682, the young man sent by the King of England, by the name of William Penn Jr., set his boots on the ground, and judged the land was good enough. He immediately pictured in his enlightened mind, while looking at the swamps and open elds by the Delaware River, the axis of a new city, one he decided to call the City of Brotherly Love, borrowing from the old Greek Language — two key elements of the new word: Phileo (Love) and Adelphos (Brother).

e City where Brother and Sisters Embrace Each Other and are Strong Enough to Love Each Other — no matter their di erences in the practice of their religious faith, which also later created tolerance for political a liation, although color of skin has proved to be intractable to resolve and settle.

e was, to put it in the simple manner needed for this simple op-ed article, the genesis of our city, which William Penn, a man who professed the Quaker religion, saw every one of his political steps as if inspired by Heaven or mandated by God.

He called Philadelphia, “ e City of Brotherly Love,” but furthermore went to say his city, which existed only in his imagination, was also a “Holy Experiment” where God will rejoice to see his creatures building together, not just houses, but homes — warm places where children now born in America, not in the oppressed neighborhoods of the European cities where previous generation their families lived before in abject poverty and with a total lack of education.

Delaware, the neighboring State to the South, was later called the “First State” because it was the rst to ratify in 1787 the U.S. Constitution written in Philadelphia.

Pennsylvania, on the contrary, picked up the greater honor of being called “ e Keystone State,” because a nation was imagined here and the written documents that materialize it in people’s imagination were dra ed here:

All 15 others, from Guatemala down to Argentina, gained their own independence from the Spanish Empire, and nally the U.S., the older sister republic to the North, nally recognized them, granting full legitimacy to their existence as new and independent republics. Cuba was the last one in 1899.

While we remember this wondrous history facing the landmark city election coming on May 16, 2023, for the 100th Leader of Penn’s “Holy experiment,” the fourth Mayor of the City in 21st Century Philadelphia, we must re ect one single minute what got us started 341 years ago:

Here in America, on the contrary, they could aspire to nobility status as long as they could prove their worth through individual e ort.

e bottom line is that those immigrant parents who dared to cross the Atlantic Ocean did for the same reasons as the Latinos living in the Caribbean are also willing to risk their lives, attracted to the powerful promise and magnet America still represents: e better lives for my children and grandchildren, now U.S. citizens since their birth and with the capacity to rebuild America, our common home, once again.

e tradition survives to the day, wave after wave of uninterrupted immigration ows from all over the world, as constant throughout our history as the gentle waters that caress the beaches near the Delaware River’s mouth, where the sweet waters from our main Philadelphia river nally reach the salty Atlantic Ocean, near the City of Wilmington, less than 32 miles from South Philadelphia.

e Declaration of Independence, signed by a group of courageous men, and made public on July 4, 1776, declaring war against the greatest Army of the World at that time, the British Empire infamous Red Coats. e U.S. Constitution, approved by 13 initial states on September 17, 1787, and, even more importantly, that cornerstone of our Democracy and brand new Republic — the Constitution’s First Amendment — the one that gave legitimacy to the simple right of individuals to free expression and practice of religious faith, without interference of the government, as only William could have dreamt it. at was four years later, on December 15, 1791.

e model was adopted here, and from here it was replicated throughout Western Civilization, even back to the monarchical powers of Europe, as a foundation mainly of the Republics born throughout the Americas — starting with those established in the Southern part of the American Hemisphere following the American Revolution example, ignited on Market and 5th Street, in Old City Philadelphia.

La Gran Colombia, in 1819, recognized by President James Monroe, and Mexico in 1825.

“William Penn’s “Holy Experiment” was a “pluralistic approach that attracted a diverse range of people from many faiths,” respecting each other and coexisting civilly, one next to the other, as we read today in an encyclopedia entry.

While this urban center, sustained perhaps by the good seed planted by our Founder, has become three centuries later one of the most diverse in the United States, the sad reality no one can deny is that it remains one of the most segregated and poorest among the U.S. largest cities.

Regarding Pennsylvania, the Colony founded by William Penn, was called the “Keystone State” because the founders imagined “the central, wedge-shaped stone in an arch, which holds all the other stones in place.”

Quite a responsibility for whoever obtains the favor of the voters this coming Tuesday, May 16.

Good luck Mr, Mayor or, for the rst time in our history, Mrs. Mayor, inheritor of this great burden from our rich history, but otherwise a fascinating responsibility to do great things for its needy 1.6 million very diverse residents.

As diverse as we were in 1776, although better educated then and, therefore, able to contribute to the amazing transformation in the history of humanity the American Revolution was.z
