Recognizing those who have the challenge of saving lives and promoting health is a task for AL DÍA in Philadelphia and the region. We aim to highlight the Latinos who have been contributing their knowledge for years, as well as those who are just starting out in this highly socially signi cant work.

On this occasion, professionals such as Dr. Daniel Schidlow and Dr. Jordan Juarez, who are at opposite ends of the time of experience in their careers in the health sector, have been honored. However, they, like the other professionals who will be recognized on June 12, have the same mission.

Dr. Schidlow, who has been part of AL DÍA’s Top Doctors since its inception, will be rewarded with the Lifetime Achievement for his more than 50 years of medical practice. “ e recognition of my fellow Latinos means more to me than perhaps the recognition of anyone else,” he said in an interview with AL DÍA.

But this is not the rst time he has been honored. Drexel College of Medicine, which he led for eight years, has an award named a er him. He is currently Dean Emeritus there and returned to mentor to students and teachers alike, he also teaches, both at the main campus in Philadelphia and at the regional campus in Reading, Pennsylvania.

Schidlow arrived in the United States from Chile when he came to complete his residency at Bronx-Lebanon Hospital in New York. Like him, many Latinos come to broaden their education, but the number of those who were born and educated here has also increased. Dr. Schidlow says he has even seen Latino leadership in the eld increase. And he recognizes the importance: “Being a Latino physician, especially if you speak Spanish, is a great advantage.

At the other end of the spectrum in experience in terms of experience is Dr. Jordan Juarez, who will be honored with the Emerging Leader Award. He is a Latino born and raised in the United States. He’s native in Chula Vista, California, and comes from a family with origins in Mexico.

It’s the story of his grandmother that would motivate him to pursue a career in medicine, who in the 1960s immigrated to the United States from Escuinapa de Hidalgo, in Sinaloa, Mexico. She su ered from type II diabetes. e hard path she went through led him to make decisions. “It was an inspiration for me, thinking back then that there are certain people who are underserved, who don’t have the same resources that other members of society may have, and that puts them at greater risk of developing these conditions,” Juarez told AL DÍA.

El reconocimiento a quienes tienen el reto de salvar vidas y de promover la salud es una tarea de AL DÍA en Filadel a y la región. Se busca exaltar a los latinos que llevan años aportando su conocimiento, como también a quienes están empezando en esta labor de gran trascendencia social.

En esta ocasión, se ha exaltado a profesionales como el doctor Daniel Schidlow y Jordan Juárez, que están en extremos opuestos del tiempo de experiencia en sus carreras en el sector de salud. Sin embargo, ellos como los

otros profesionales que serán reconocidos este 12 de junio, tienen la misma misión. El doctor Schidlow, quien ha sido parte de Top Doctors de AL DÍA desde su inicio, se le premiará por sus más de 50 años de actividad médica con el premio a toda una vida. “El reconocimiento de mis compañeros latinos signi ca más para mí que quizá el reconocimiento de cualquier otra persona”, a rmó en una entrevista con AL DÍA.

Pero no es la primera vez que se le honra. La Facultad de Medicina de Drexel, que dirigió por ocho años, tiene un premio que lleva su nombre. Actualmente es Decano Emérito allí y regresó para ser un mentor de profesores y estudiantes y enseña, tanto en la sede principal de Filadel a como en el campus regional en Reading, Pensilvania.

Schidlow llegó a Estados Unidos procedente de Chile cuando vino a realizar la residencia en el Bronx-Lebanon Hospital de Nueva York. Como él, muchos latinos llegan para ampliar su formación, pero también ha aumentado la cifras de quienes han nacido y se educan aquí. Incluso, cuenta el doctor Schidlow, ha visto aumentar el liderazgo latino en este campo. Y reconoce la importancia: “Ser médico latino, sobre todo si habla español, es una gran ventaja”.

En el otro extremo en experiencia está Jordan Juárez, quien será galardonado con el premio Líder Emergente. Es un latino nacido y educado en Estados Unidos. Nació en Chula Vista (California) y hace parte de una familia con orígenes en México.

La motivación para estudiar medicina fue su abuela, quien en los años 60 emigró a Estados Unidos procedente de Escuinapa de Hidalgo, en Sinaloa (México). Ella sufrió diabetes de tipo II. El duro camino que trasegó ella lo llevó a tomar decisiones. “Fue una inspiración para mí, pensar entonces que hay ciertas personas que están desatendidas, que no tienen los mismos recursos que otros miembros de la sociedad pueden tener, y eso les pone en mayor riesgo de desarrollar estas condiciones”, dijo Juárez a AL DÍA.

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania has a new Chief Diversity O cer, and he’s Latino.

On May 31, Governor Josh Shapiro and Secretary of Administration Neil Weaver announced Norman Bristol Colón as the Commonwealth’s Chief Diversity O cer.

In the role, Bristol Colón will lead all diversity, equity and inclusion programs across all state agencies.

He is Pennsylvania’s rst statewide diversity o cer in over a decade since Governor Ed Rendell completed his two terms in 2011.

A LONGTIME DEDICATED ADVOCATE

A Native of Puerto Rico, Bristol Colón moved to Lancaster County in 1992 and has distinguished himself as a multi-faceted advocate and leader.

Whether he’s worked in higher education, the nonpro t sector, or in government, Bristol Colón has always made his presence known.

“Norman Bristol Colón has years of experience working to advance equity and inclusion… and together, we will work to make sure no community in our Commonwealth is le behind as we continue bringing people together to deliver real results for Pennsylvania,” said Governor Shapiro in a statement.

Bristol Colón is currently the chief diversity o cer for the Department of Community and Economic Development and the chair and founder of the Pennsylvania Latino Convention (PALC).

e latter was created to serve as the annual gathering to ignite positive change in local communities across the state while ensuring that key stakeholders are accessible, accountable, and responsive to the needs of the ever-growing Latino community.

PALC is an opportunity to assemble the state’s professionals and emerging leaders to tackle issues impacting the fastest-growing segment of the population.

“Norman’s working knowledge of Commonwealth operations and our workforce, combined with a proven history of working collaboratively across departments, have prepared him to succeed in this new role in the Shapiro Administration, said Secretary Weaver”

In moving forward to a shared prosperity, embracing diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging values is fundamental to our Commonwealth’s future.

El puertorriqueño Bristol Colón dirigirá todos los programas de diversidad, equidad e inclusión en todas las agencias estatales. Es el primer o cial estatal de diversidad de Pensilvania en más de una década desde que el gobernador Ed Rendell completó sus dos mandatos en 2011.

UN DEFENSOR DEDICADO DESDE HACE MUCHO TIEMPO

ere’s Secretaries Xavier Becerra and Alejandro Mayorkas, SBA Administrator Isabel Guzman, and a host of Latino, Latinx and Latina judges Biden has appointed in his time as President.

His latest move is to appoint Anna Gomez to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Not only would Gomez’s successful appointment by the Senate make the FCC whole with ve commissioners, but she would also be the rst Latino to sit on the commission in 20 years.

“For far too long, the Biden administration and Senate leaders have le us without a full, ve-person FCC while important issues are in front of the agency,” said Chris Lewis, President and CEO at Public Knowledge in a statement.

Public Knowledge is a nonpartisan, nonpro t organization lobbying Congress for a ordable broadband and internet services.

THE NEEDED EXPERIENCE

e organization lauded Gomez’s nomination as a win for broadband authority and oversight over issues such as net neutrality, universal service, a ordable broadband access, and “broader public interest protections.”

“Anna Gomez has deep, demonstrated experience working for the public on telecommunications and technology issues,” said Public Knowledge in a statement.

Before being tapped by the president, Gomez served in a number of policy and communications roles, most recently as Senior Advisor for the Bureau of Cyberspace and Digital Policy at the U.S. Department of State.

Spending decades in the telecommunications sector, Gomez served as Deputy Administrator for the National Telecommunications and Information Administration, in addition to holding multiple positions in the FCC.

She was Deputy Chief of the International Bureau and was Senior Legal Advisor to former FCC Chairman William Kennard.

“Her decades of experience in the telecommunications sector, most of those spent serving the public interest, will allow Ms. Gomez to get right to work at the FCC, which is critical to help the FCC move forward with its agenda of ensuring all people have access to communications services,” said Lewis in a statement delivered Monday.

Lewis said Gomez’s “work for the FCC and the NTIA will be bene cial as the administration and Congress increasingly look towards these two agencies to coordinate efforts to close the digital divide.”

THE FIRST LATINO IN TWO DECADES

e Congressional Hispanic Caucus had urged the administration to tap a Latino in March. No Latino has served on the commission in over two decades.

“In today’s digital era, the Internet is necessary for work, education, and more. Yet, the digital divide continues to a ect the Latino community at disproportionately higher rates – with 40% of Latino households lack-

Should North Philly State Rep. Donna Bullock get her way, disobeying the city’s instructions for dumping waste could run perpetrators up to $20,000, risking more jail time and community service through a new bill passed recently in the Pennsylvania House.

ILLEGAL DUMPING IN PHILLY

Maria Gonzalez, president of HACE, felt optimistic about the new levies.

“ ese nes can be used for a greater purpose,” she said, pointing to a ordable housing or supporting recreation centers from the revenue usually shouldered by taxpayers and not nes.

For years, Gonzalez said, HACE has grappled with dumping on plots that it acquired for development. In the last eight years, the organization began to fence o areas where they demolished buildings to avoid the lots from becoming dumping sites.

“As soon as [the building] was demolished, we fence that up. Because then people start coming onto our lot, dumping…doing stu that they shouldn’t be doing.”

When the area isn’t fenced, as is the case for most vacant lots that aren’t poised for development, HACE becomes responsible for the litter to not inherit a lien on the property, something they take up in court.

The EMERITUS AND EMERGING LEADER

Dr. Daniel Schidlow has been a part of AL DÍA’s Top Doctors ceremony since its inception more than ve years ago. At the 2023 ceremony on June 12, 2023, he will be part of it in a way he never has before.

In the years since Schidlow helped conceptualize the Philly region’s premiere recognition for Latino physicians of all specialties, he’s sat on many advisory boards, nominated more than a few of his fellow doctors and personally honored them at ceremonies in the past as an MC or special speaker.

But in 2023, o of any advisory board duty, Schidlow will be recognized with the AL DÍA Top Doctors Lifetime Achievement Award for a career that’s spanned more than 50 years as a physician.

“It is a lifetime,” Schidlow re ected in a recent interview with AL DÍA, and one he has been honored for before. He even has a faculty award named a er him at Drexel’s College of Medicine, which he led for eight years between 2011 and 2019, for transformational leadership.

Schidlow is grateful for them all, but there’s something extra special about the AL DÍA award and it’s not because he helped create it.

“ e recognition of my Latino peers means more to me than perhaps the recognition of anybody else,” he said.

In doing so, it also puts his name rightfully in the overarching Latino narrative of Philadelphia, which to him is “truly moving and signi cant.”

THE DEAN WHO STAYED

It’s also a narrative Schidlow continues to tell at Drexel himself and through the aspiring Latino doctors he mentors.

“I feel very strongly about the College of Medicine and my commitment to it,” said Schidlow.

He’s Dean Emeritus these days, but before leaving his leadership post in 2019, Schidlow expressed a desire to return to the school’s faculty and help in any way he could. e school obliged, and in addition to being a mentor to many students and faculty alike, Schidlow also helps by teaching some

courses at both the college’s main campus in Philadelphia and its new regional branch campus in Reading, PA.

“I feel pretty busy all the time,” Schidlow said.

e latter campus is also one he was instrumental in creating in his time as dean, and added another 40 students to the college’s overall enrollment.

While not the reason Drexel expanded its medical school to Reading, the city is also home to a population that’s close to 70% Latino and rising.

THE LATINO “ASSET”

e rise of the Latino population across the country is something Schidlow’s seen through the lens of both a doctor and academic leader.

When he rst arrived from Chile for a residency at Bronx-Lebanon Hospital in New York, Schidlow remembers all of his

fellow Latino doctors also having a similar immigrant story to his own. In 2023, there are still a number of immigrants from Latin America that arrive as doctors or to train towards a medical degree, but a growing number are U.S.-born and educated.

In addition to students, Schidlow said he’s also seen growth over his career in the number of Latinos rising to leadership positions in the eld.

“I don’t think we have enough yet,” Schidlow said of the number of Latino physicians in the U.S., but their priority is high alongside doctors from other underrepresented communities

“To be a Latino physician, particularly one that speaks Spanish, is a tremendous asset,” he continued.

His own Hispanic heritage is something Schidlow previously called in an interview with AL DÍA his “best and most important asset.”

THE EMERGING LEADER

Someone who’s part of that next generation of Latino physicians with the potential to change the whole of healthcare in the country is Jordan Juarez, the Emerging Leader at AL DÍA’s 2023 Top Doctors Awards.

It was during this event with LMSA that really changed my life.

Jordan Juarez

Juarez is part of what Schidlow identied as the growing number of U.S.-born and educated Latinos pursuing careers in medicine. He’s a native of Chula Vista, California and was born into a big Mexican American family — he has seven siblings for the record.

His dad was born in Acapulco, Guerrero, Mexico, while his mom was born in Los Angeles. It’s the story of his grandmother on his mom’s side that would push Juarez to pursue a career in medicine.

Originally from Escuinapa de Hidalgo, Sinaloa, Juarez’s grandmother immigrated to Los Angeles in the 1960s, where she would take up work in a number of factories as a seamstress.

It was low wage, and she also didn’t command the English language, meaning her access to things like healthcare were extremely limited — with any information on

the health front coming from her community. In the long run, that dynamic led Juarez’s grandmother to develop type II diabetes. It’s a manageable ailment now according to him, but her path there got him re ecting.

“ at was an inspiration for me, thinking back then that there are certain individuals who are underserved, who don’t have all the same resources that other members of society may have, and that puts them at higher risk to develop these conditions,” Juarez told AL DÍA in a recent interview.

In the healthcare system of 2023, language barriers like the one Juarez’s grandmother faced are under the banner of social determinants of health, and it’s become Juarez’s mission to bridge the gaps they create in his own burgeoning medical career.

Statistics also play a role in his motivation. Currently only 7% of all active physicians in the U.S. are Latino — a number Juarez looks to change.

His rst step on what he envisions now as a career in medicine on an academic track, started as a pre-med sophomore at the University of Southern California (USC). It was then that he rst encountered the Latino Medical Students Association (LMSA) via a ier he saw for one of its events.

“It was during this event with LMSA that really changed my life, and really opened my eyes to all that there is in medicine and healthcare that we can do to support our communities,” said Juarez.

It was also the rst time he met other Latino medical students that were talking about the issues and disparities he knew to be true when it comes to the Latino community interacting with the U.S. healthcare system.

“I thought I was the only one,” said Juarez.

In short, he had to get involved, and did so as an undergrad by founding USC Latino Students in Medicine — a student organization for Latino undergraduate students hoping to get into medical school.

When Juarez himself got into medical school at Temple’s Lewis Katz School of

Medicine, the institution’s LMSA branch was something he immediately got involved with. He became the branch’s co-president, and would rise within the national LMSA organization over his years in medical school.

Juarez went from fundraising chair for the Northeast Branch of LMSA to now being named the chief nancial o cer of the national LMSA organization.

In his pursuit of a career in medicine from an academic standpoint, Juarez also recently completed the yearlong National Institute of Health Medical Research Scholars Program. e experience saw Juarez look at population health from a national perspective, and particularly analyze di erent healthcare interventions that were bene cial to di erent minority communities across the country.

“It was the rst time that this was the singular focus of the research that we were conducting,” he said. “I had been involved with other projects where we looked at health disparities, but this was our main focus.”

roughout it all — both his experience in the NIH program and LMSA — Juarez is always rst to credit the mentors that have guided him along the way.

“ is has all been a team e ort,” he said. “I’ve been fortunate to have excellent mentors, both at the student and faculty level [and] we’ve all been able to come together and try to address these ongoing challenges.”

at’s also Juarez’s advice to anyone who wants to follow his path — get mentors.

REMEMBERING ONE’S ROOTS

For Schidlow, who’s very much in the business of giving advice these days as dean emeritus, there’s three major pieces for all, and a fourth for the Latino students that cross his path.

First and second, embrace the hard work that will come with medical school and learn when to ask for help.

“ e best doctor is not the one who knows everything because nobody knows everything,” Schidlow said on the last point. ird, stay positive no matter the situation, and for Latino doctors in particular, the message is simple:

e story of Schidlow’s parents is the story of an escape from Nazi Germany “at the last minute,” and arriving in Chile, “which they knew nothing about.”

It’s there where Schidlow was born and eventually began his career as a physician before making the jump to the U.S. Juarez’s jump to the U.S. was made by his grandmother and parents, but her struggle with the language in an unfamiliar land and need to make it work for her family is a story that’s real across all generations.

In the same way Schidlow wrote the next chapter of his family’s story as a doctor in Chile and the U.S. for the last 50 years, Juarez has the pen in his hand as you read the words on this page.

Actualmente es Decano Emérito, pero antes de dejar su puesto de liderazgo en 2019, Schidlow expresó su deseo de regresar a la facultad y ayudar de cualquier manera que pudiera. La escuela aceptó y, además de ser un mentor para muchos estudiantes y profesores por igual, Schidlow también ayuda enseñando algunos cursos, tanto en el campus principal de la universidad en Filadel a, como en su nuevo campus sucursal regional en Reading, Pensilvania.

“Me siento muy ocupado todo el tiempo”, a rma Schidlow, quien también contribuyó decisivamente a la creación de este último campus durante su mandato como decano, y añadió otros 40 estudiantes a la inscripción total de la universidad.

Si bien no fue la razón por la que Drexel amplió su facultad de medicina a Reading, la ciudad también alberga una población cercana al 70 % de latinos y en aumento.

EL “ACTIVO” LATINO

El auge de la población latina en todo el país es algo que Schidlow ha visto a través de su prisma tanto de médico como de líder académico.

Cuando llegó de Chile para realizar una residencia en el Bronx-Lebanon Hospital de

Nueva York, recuerda que todos sus compañeros médicos latinos también tenían una historia de inmigración similar a la suya. En 2023, sigue habiendo un gran número de inmigrantes latinoamericanos que llegan como médicos o para formarse en la carrera de medicina, pero cada vez son más los nacidos y educados en Estados Unidos.

Además de los estudiantes, Schidlow dijo que también ha visto crecer a lo largo de su carrera el número de latinos que ascienden a puestos de liderazgo en este campo. “No creo que tengamos su cientes todavía”, dijo Schidlow sobre el número de médicos latinos en Estados Unidos, pero su prioridad es alta junto con los médicos de otras comunidades subrepresentadas.

“Ser médico latino, sobre todo si habla español, es una gran ventaja”, añadió. Su propia herencia hispana es algo que Schidlow cali có anteriormente en una entrevista con AL DÍA como su “mejor y más importante activo.”

EL LÍDER EMERGENTE

Alguien que forma parte de esa próxima generación de médicos latinos con potencial de cambiar todo el sistema de salud en el país es Jordan Juárez, el Líder Emergente en los premios Top Doctors 2023 de AL DÍA

Juárez forma parte de lo que Schidlow identi có como el creciente número de latinos nacidos y educados en Estados Unidos que siguen carreras en medicina. Nativo de Chula Vista, California y nacido en una gran familia mexicano-americana con siete hermanos.

Su padre nació en Acapulco, Guerrero, México, mientras que su madre es de Los Ángeles. Es la historia de su abuela materna la que empujaría a Juárez a seguir la carrera de medicina. Originaria de Escuinapa de Hidalgo, Sinaloa, su abuela emigró a Los Ángeles en los años sesenta, donde trabajaría en varias fábricas como costurera.

Los salarios bajos y su falta de conocimiento del inglés hicieron que su acceso a servicios como la sanidad fuera muy limitado. Cualquier información en materia de salud

provenía de su comunidad. A largo plazo, esa dinámica llevó a la abuela de Juárez a desarrollar diabetes de tipo II. Según él, ahora es una dolencia controlable, pero todo este tortuoso camino de su abuela lo hizo re exionar.

“Fue una inspiración para mí, pensar entonces que hay ciertas personas que están desatendidas, que no tienen los mismos recursos que otros miembros de la sociedad pueden tener, y eso les pone en mayor riesgo de desarrollar estas condiciones”, dijo Juárez a AL DÍA en una entrevista reciente.

En el sistema sanitario de 2023, las barreras lingüísticas como las que tuvo que afrontar la abuela de Juárez se engloban bajo el epígrafe de determinantes sociales de la salud, y se ha convertido en su misión de cerrar esas brechas que crean en su propia pujante carrera médica.

Las estadísticas también in uyen en su motivación. En la actualidad, únicamente el 7 % de todos los médicos activos de Estados Unidos son latinos, una cifra que Juárez quiere cambiar.

Su primer paso hacia lo que ahora ve como una carrera en medicina en una trayectoria académica, lo comenzó como estudiante de segundo año de pre- medicina en la Universidad del Sur de California (USC). Fue entonces cuando se encontró por primera vez con la Asociación de Estudiantes de Medicina Latinos (LMSA por sus siglas en inglés) a través de un volante para uno de sus eventos.

“Fue durante este evento con LMSA que realmente cambió mi vida, y realmente me abrió los ojos a todo lo que hay en la medicina y la salud que podemos hacer para apoyar a nuestras comunidades”, dijo Juárez.

También fue la primera vez que conoció a otros estudiantes de medicina latinos que ha-

blaban sobre los problemas y las disparidades que él sabía que eran ciertos en lo que respecta a la interacción de la comunidad latina con el sistema de salud estadounidense. “Pensaba que era el único”, dice Juárez.

En resumen, tuvo que involucrarse, y lo hizo como estudiante fundando USC Latino Students in Medicine, una organización para estudiantes latinos de pregrado con la esperanza de ingresar en la facultad de medicina.

Cuando Juárez ingresó en la Facultad de Medicina Lewis Katz de Temple, se relacionó de inmediato con el departamento LMSA de la institución. Se convirtió en su copresidente, y ascendió dentro de la organización nacio-

nal LMSA durante sus años en la escuela de medicina.

Juárez pasó de ser presidente de recaudación de fondos de la división noreste a ser nombrado director nanciero de la organización nacional LMSA.

En su búsqueda de una carrera en medicina desde el punto de vista académico, Juárez también completó recientemente el programa anual de becas de investigación médica del Instituto Nacional de Salud. La experiencia le permitió a Juárez observar la salud de la población desde una perspectiva nacional y, en particular, analizar distintas intervenciones en salud que fueron bene ciosas para diferentes comunidades minoritarias de todo el país.

“Era la primera vez que la investigación se centraba en esto”, a rma. “Había participado en otros proyectos en los que analizamos las disparidades sanitarias, pero éste era nuestro objetivo principal”, expresó.

A lo largo de todo -su experiencia tanto en el programa de Institutos Nacionales de Salud (NIH por sus siglas en inglés) como en la LMSA- Juárez siempre es el primero en dar crédito a los mentores que le han guiado a lo largo del camino.

“Todo esto ha sido un esfuerzo de equipo”, dijo. “He tenido la suerte de contar con excelentes mentores, tanto a nivel de estudiantes como de profesores y todos hemos sido capaces de unirnos y tratar de abordar estos retos actuales”, manifestó.

Ése es también el consejo de Juárez a cualquiera que quiera seguir su camino: consiga mentores.

RECORDANDO LAS PROPIAS RAÍCES

Para Schidlow, que actualmente se dedica a dar consejos como decano emérito, hay tres consejos importantes para todos, y un cuarto para los estudiantes latinos que se cruzan en su camino.

Primero y segundo, aceptar el duro trabajo que conlleva estudiar medicina y aprender a pedir ayuda.

“El mejor médico no es el que lo sabe todo porque nadie lo sabe todo”, dijo Schidlow sobre el último punto.

En tercer lugar, hay que ser positivo en cualquier situación, y para los médicos latinos en particular, el mensaje es sencillo: “No olvides de dónde vienes. La mayoría de nosotros nos apoyamos en los hombros de los que nos precedieron, que no lo tuvieron tan fácil”, señaló.

La historia de los padres de Schidlow es la de una huida de la Alemania nazi “en el último minuto” y la llegada a Chile, “del que no sabían nada”.

Allí nació Schidlow, que acabó iniciando su carrera como médico antes de dar el salto a Estados Unidos.

El salto de Juárez lo dieron su abuela y sus padres, pero su lucha con el idioma en una tierra desconocida y la necesidad de sacar adelante a su familia es una historia real a través de todas las generaciones.

Del mismo modo que Schidlow escribió el siguiente capítulo de la historia de su familia como médico en Chile y Estados Unidos durante los últimos 50 años, Juárez tiene el bolígrafo en la mano mientras usted lee las palabras de esta página.

She’s also the director of both the division of general obstetrics and gynecology and the obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive sciences clinical simulation at Temple University Hospital.

Ayala Crespo has Puerto Rican roots, receiving her bachelor’s in biology at the University of Puerto Rico-Mayagüez, and then her MD at the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine in San Juan.

Works as a pediatric practitioner at St. Christopher’s Hospital, where she is the associate director of the neonatal and perinatal fellowship program.

e program is a three-year training that exposes participants to a career in neonatal and perinatal medicine — dealing with newborns and infants born prematurely.

Quiñones Cardona is also an assistant professor of pediatrics at Drexel College of Medicine.

She is a two-time graduate of George Washington University, receiving both her bachelor’s in biology and a master’s of public health, focusing on community-oriented primary care. Quiñones Cardona got her MD from the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine.

Her focus there is rehabbing patients who have sustained debilitating spinal cord injuries back to points where they can live as pain free and independent as possible.

“Rehabilitation is happy medicine,” Ramos Lamboy said in a promotional video for the program.

Ramos Lamboy also has Puerto Rican roots, receiving her medical degree from Universidad Central del Caribe, located in Bayamón. A er an internship and residency in New York City, Ramos Lamboy completed a fellowship in spinal cord injury rehab at UPMC.

Since joining Penn State Health Dr. Ramirez has built a local, regional, and national reputation as an educator, clinician, researcher, and advocate for underserved communities.

Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, Delgado Daza was also part of Einstein Health’s Vaccine Crisis Communication team that worked to get accurate COVID-19 vaccine information to communities across Philadelphia.

He has Venezuelan roots and is a graduate of Universidad Central de Venezuela. Delgado Daza also completed a fellowship at omas Je erson University Hospital.

Before rising at Temple, Hernandez completed both a fellowship and residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. His fellowship was in gynecology oncology, and his residency focused more on becoming an OB/GYN doctor.

Hernandez is a graduate of the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine in San Juan.

James Camacho was born in Edison, a small suburb of central New Jersey, where he grew up in an only-child household with very di erent cultures. His father is Puerto Rican and his mother Chinese, life experiences he uses to create his stand-up comedies and connect with his audience.

“Growing up my mom was very strict in terms of she wanted me to focus on academics. She wanted me to be a straight A student. I had a lot of passions, like my rst dream was to be a baseball player. And, yeah, there’s a Puerto Rican side there. But she did not want me to play any sports. She just wanted me to focus on my studies,” Camacho joked in an interview with AL DÍA.

His career as a comedian began in his sophomore year of college, about seven years ago. He then moved with his family to New York, where he currently resides and works.

Camacho has also been noted for his appearances in TV shows and movies. He’s been featured on Kevin Hart’s LOL Network, “FBI” and “Kevin Can Wait” on CBS, the movie “Before I Go”, and the Jay-Z music video “I Got the Keys” with DJ Khaled.

James’ viral videos and stand-up clips on TikTok have more than 65 million views and millions more on Instagram. e New York based comedian regularly performs at NY’s “Comic Strip Live” and is currently performing across the country as he gears up for the release of his special debut.

In a time of political turmoil and social unrest, James’ perspective has a wide appeal. He has won over stand-up comedy fans through his rapid- re punchlines underwriter a boyish charm. Many describe his style as friendly and conversational, but what few know is that Camacho identi es as an introverted comedian. But how does an introvert get to do stand-up comedy? Here our exclusive conversation with him: How is doing stand up comedy in front of a lot of people and being an introvert? It’s funny because you would think that getting in front of a bunch of people staring at you expecting you to make them laugh would be something into an introverts nightmare. edy club if someone tackles you, they’ll pull them out. So you have your ideas that are prepared, that are you know, honed, and then you’re just telling them. I have more trouble in uncontrolled environments. Like if I go out, like today that I’m going to a birthday party. And obviously, I can’t prepare what I’m going to say and what’s gonna happen. So that gives me a little bit more anxiety. I denitely prefer a night where I go home, and I just watch TV rather than going out for a drink or partying.

What’s it like to be an only child and live with two parents with different cultural backgrounds?

I think it’s a good question because I’m not a fan of being an only child. I always wished I had a sibling. I used to have dreams where I had an older brother. But I think one thing about being mixed race is that it can be a little bit lonely because you’re kinda unique and di erent from everyone else. So I think on top of being di erent I was alone as in terms of being an only child so I think it was it made it even a bit more isolating.

What inspires you to dedicate yourself to comedy?

I’ve always been interested in the entertainment industry. Growing up, I always wanted to be on TV and be some sort of actor. So I just didn’t know exactly what it was. I went through a lot of phases when I was in college. In my freshman year, I was telling everyone’s like, oh, I want to be a journalist. en it was like, oh, I want to be a screenwriter. And then it became I want to be an actor. And then I want to become a comedian. So I think the drive is really just the need for self expression and performance. I don’t have this thing of Oh, I watched SNL or this comedian growing up because it inspired me. I think I just have a very huge desire to be understood. I’ve always been kind of quiet about what I won and my thoughts. So I think doing stand-up or performance art is a way for me to, I guess, let people learn about me and understand me a little better.

riginally from Mexico City, Montserrat Garibay had Texas as her home for 30 years. She came to the United States as an undocumented kid not knowing a single word of English, and the public school system was responsible for teaching her.

More precisely her middle school teacher, Ms. Hernandez, who spoke Spanish and was able to assist her tremendously with that language barrier. Within a year, Garibay transferred to an all English classroom.

Ms. Hernandez was the reason why Garibay became initially a teacher and later an educational activist. Her dedication to teaching and connection with Garibay’s mother showed her the importance of having someone who cares.

OENGLISH ESPAÑOL

Up to this day, they are still in touch, and Ms. Hernandez has the pleasure to see Garibay as the Assistant Deputy Secretary & Director for the O ce of English Language Acquisition (OELA), in the U.S. Department of Education. Completing a full circle in her life, Garibay has now the mission to oversee the program that understands the impacts quali ed teachers in collaboration with the di erent entities have on strengthening the opportunities for English learners.

“At the federal level, the way that we can upli the importance of multilingualism is by really highlighting and utilizing the secretary’s voice on how well these programs are working throughout our country,” she added.

TRAJECTORY

A er graduating from the University of Texas at Austin with a bachelor’s degree in Spanish language teaching and a minor in bilingual education; Garibay landed a job at the school district, where she stayed for eight years. “ e best thing in the world” was how she described that experience.

During that time, she also became very involved with Education Austin — a merged union local with the American Federation of

In every step of the way, Garibay has utilized her bilingual skill to bring to the table the stories of those who are many times invisible, so they could be treated with dignity and respect, she said.

Garibay’s heart has always belonged to teaching, but she is grateful for being able to utilize all her knowledge as an educator and English learner to lead an initiative about the importance of bilingualism and what it entails in the 21st century. Although an overwhelming job, through OELA, Garibay is committed to embracing, upli ing and showcasing the successful stories of their students, raising the bar for multilingualism education.

“We are looking at emphasizing that we see our students as assets when they bring their knowledge, culture, heritage and language to our classrooms,” Garibay stated.

IMPACT ON SOCIETY

Graduation season has allowed Garibay the opportunity to hear stories and see di erent examples of students getting their Seal of Biliteracy diploma — given to students who have attained pro ciency in two or more languages by high school graduation. For her, there is no better gi she can give her students.

Garibay and OELA have received positive feedback on the job that has been done. Students are excited as they feel seen when the Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona talks about seeing their skills as assets.

“It is important that we upli their stories so they can live their American dream,” Garibay stated. “If we put the resources that they need, when they need it and in the way they need it, they can be successful.”

On the other end, OELA feels the need to do more to elevate the importance of teachers and to make sure to have bilingual educators quali ed and respected.

FUTURE ACTIONS

Studies say that dual language programs are the best for English learners because they

get to keep their language and utilize it to learn a new one. However, OELA is seeing that across the country, the students whose bilingual programs were designed for are not the ones utilizing the resource. Mainly anglo students are currently attending these programs.

Even though Garibay thinks it is great that others are bene ting from it, duo language programs need to be catered for English learners.

Focused on expanding at the federal level, OELA will hold, on June 22nd and 23rd, a National Convening on English Learners’ Civil Rights. e date marks the 42nd anniversary of Castaneda vs. Pickard, the court case that impacted bilingual education programs nationwide.

“We are working with the o ce of civil rights to make sure we are highlighting guidance and resources to equip states and local education agencies with the tools to meet their obligations to English learners and families,” Garibay said.

When targeting multilingualism, it is important to focus on what the law says and what each state has the responsibility to make sure the students and parents are engaged and know their rights. OELA will be working for the next 16 months on an agenda that is going to address Seal of Biliteracy, dual language, parent engagement, and early learning — as a strong foundation in the elementary years is crucial.

La temporada de graduaciones ha brindado a Garibay la oportunidad de escuchar historias y ver diferentes ejemplos de estudiantes que obtienen su diploma de Sello de Bilingüismo, otorgado a los estudiantes que han alcanzado el dominio

de dos o más idiomas al graduarse de la escuela secundaria. Para ella, no hay mejor regalo que pueda hacer a sus alumnos.

Garibay y la OELA han recibido comentarios positivos sobre el trabajo que se ha hecho. Los estudiantes están entusiasmados cuando el secretario de Educación, Miguel Cardona, habla de ver sus habilidades como activos.

“Es importante que resaltemos sus historias para que puedan vivir su sueño americano. Si ponemos los recursos que necesitan, cuando los necesitan y de la manera que los necesitan, pueden tener éxito”, declaró.

ACCIONES FUTURAS

Los estudios dicen que los programas bilingües son los mejores para los estudiantes de inglés porque les permiten conservar su idioma y utilizarlo para aprender uno nuevo. Sin embargo, la OELA está viendo que, en todo el país, los alumnos para los que se diseñaron los programas bilingües no son los que utilizan el recurso. En la actualidad, son principalmente los estudiantes anglosajones quienes asisten a estos programas.

A pesar de que Garibay piensa que es genial que otros se bene cien de ello, los programas bilingües deben estar dirigidos a los estudiantes de inglés.

Enfocada en la expansión a nivel federal, OELA celebrará, los días 22 y 23 de junio, una Convención Nacional sobre los Derechos Civiles de los Estudiantes de Inglés. Built in the 1760s and overlooking the Schuylkill River, Mount Pleasant was long known as a summer retreat for the wealthy before the revolutionary war, but is not often remembered for the labor of enslaved blacks to maintain it. The Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission has authorized the unveiling ceremony for the memorial plaque. The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 2:00 pm. On Monday, June 12, 2023, AL DÍA held its annual Top Doctors event, and another class of Latino health professionals and an emerging leader were honored for their work in the Mid-Atlantic region.

“I am so encouraged and energized by the future in this room,” Lifetime Achievement winner Dr. Daniel Schidlow said in his acceptance speech in a nod to the future doctors in attendance.

Find mentors — maybe in the room — remember the joy of medicine and connecting with patients, and exercise a heavy dose of self-con dence, especially as they continue to navigate medical school.

All in all, it was another night of empowerment for AL DÍA’s Top Doctors.

ONE SCORE AND 12 YEARS AGO, A MAN PLEADED FOR HIS LIFE IN L.A., PERHAPS THINKING OR PERHAPS DREAMING, AS KING ARTHUR PREDICTHER MUCH EARLIER

Iam re ecting on these legends, or the recent past, and I have no choice but to connect to the most removed legends from our past, namely the inspired or enlightened moments. When the 13 colonies on our East Coast — riding on the shoulders of seven enlightened men, abided by that inspiration dra ed by Mr. omas Je erson — e Declaration of Independence of the United States of America — signed by 13 men who we call today “ e Founding Fathers.”

I am, of course, not Mr. Lincoln, much less Mr. Je erson, much less any paperback book writer. Just truly yours, humble servant, news writer, editor, founder, editor in chief and CEO of AL Día, Mr. H. Guaracao. I can’t help but evoke these legends from our recent and distant past. ey give me insight individually and now collective-

ly to those of you who care to read this column to say, without hesitation, that Rodney King individualy— these lines—was totally right.

Furthermore, the same founding fathers, Benjamin Franklin, omas Je erson, John Adams, or John Jay, who said for the ages: “Give me liberty or give me death.” ey were totally right when they decided that “united or die,” was best.

at meant either, we lose the war against those who hate or win the battle against them, with those who choose to love.

Wasn’t it Him, the One, who said to the disciple Peter, e Rock, e Strong: “Are you strong enough to love, Peter?”

In other words, the act of love is an act of courage, not one of weakness.

One somehow glimpses its truism. Caring to love demands courage. To hate and to spew hatred is as easy as throwing up a er a long night of drinking or drugs, or drinking plus words.

During a recent visit to Boston, while I was attending my daughter’s graduation, I heard from a driver this age-old wisdom:

“Sir, the man who hates is a nobody. He’s nobody. He needs to hate to feel that he’s somebody.”

So, what I’m telling you is that you shouldn’t mind those who hate because they will o set themselves without you touching them.

In other words, hatred is self-destructive.

So it is entirely up to you.

e choices are down to love versus death, love versus hate, to do versus undo.

What is it that we should do today?

e choices are pretty clear a er re ecting on these simple Stone-Age sentences. We all choose victory, which is in peace.

Peace and victory are what comes from the fact that we’re human beings and as such we can “all get along,” if we so choose.
