Caramel Apple Cheese Pie

This recipe is so easy to make, it comes together in just minutes. But by its beautiful presentation and incredible flavors, nobody would ever guess!

Ingredients

Caramel Cheese Filling

1 jar Lieber’s Caramel Cream

2 eggs

1 teaspoon Lieber’s Pure Vanilla Extract

1 teaspoon salt

8 oz brick cream cheese, room temp.

Assembly and Topping

1 Lieber’s Graham Cracker Pie Crust

1 can Lieber’s Apple Pie Filling

Whipped Cream

Reserved Lieber’s Caramel Cream

Lieber’s Nut Crunch

Directions

1. Preheat oven to 350°F.

2. Set aside 1/4 cup caramel cream. Place remaining caramel cream into blender.

3. Add eggs, vanilla extract, salt and cream cheese. Blend until combined and smooth.

4. Pour cheese mixture into pie crust. Bake for 30 min, until mostly set.

5. Remove from oven and spread pie filling over the top. Return to oven and bake for another 20-25 minutes, until pie is set. Refrigerate until fully cooled.

6. To garnish: pipe a dollop of whipped cream over the pie. Top with a drizzle of reserved caramel and a sprinkle of nut crunch. Plan ahead: Freeze until ready to serve. Defrost and garnish just before.

The Best Milk Chocolate Chip Crunch Cookies

You know what’s better than an amazing homemade chocolate chip cookie? A perfect homemade cookie packed with milk chocolate chips, nut brittle for crunch, and a perfectly chewy texture!

Ingredients

1 cup Lieber’s Avocado Oil

2 eggs

1/2 cup sugar

1/2 cup dark brown sugar

2 Tablespoon Lieber’s Cornstarch

1 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon Lieber’s Pure Vanilla Extract

1 teaspoon Lieber’s Baking Soda

1 pack Lieber’s Instant Vanilla Pudding Mix

2 1/2 cups flour

1 bag (9 oz) Lieber’s Milk Chocolate Chips

3/4 cup Lieber’s White Chocolate Chips

1 cup Lieber’s Almond or Hazelnut Brittle

Directions

1. Preheat oven to 375°F. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper. Set aside.

2. With an electric mixer, beat together oil, eggs, sugar, corn starch, salt, vanilla extract, baking soda, and vanilla pudding mix on medium speed until combined and creamy.

3. Turn mixer speed to low and add flour. Mix until just combined.

4. Add both chocolate chips and nut brittle. Stir until evenly distributed.

5. Use a medium cookie scoop or heaping tablespoon to scoop out balls of dough and place on prepared baking sheet.

6. Bake for about 9 minutes, until set. Allow cookies to cool before serving, as nuts are soft when warm.

Variation: Instead of cookies, make cookie sticks: form dough into a log and bake for 15-18 minutes. Cool, then slice into sticks.

Dr. Jerry has another talk with Michoel. During the conversation, Michoel suddenly gets some memory back about the accident he was in right before coming here. He'd had a lot of money on him, and is pretty sure that the accident had been staged so that he could be robbed.

Dr. Jerry makes a vaguely threatening remark about Michoel needing to pay for his stay before being allowed to leave the place.

Michoel asks Mike if he could use his cell phone. Mike leaves the phone for him, but whispers that he doesn't want any of the staff catching Michoel using it.

CHAPTER FIFTY EIGHT

“Hello, Hinda?”

“Michoel, how are you?”

“I’m…good, baruch Hashem. He should continue to help me. Tell me, what’s with Yosef?”

Hinda swallowed. “It’s not simple,” she said carefully. “Like I've told you, he hasn’t been feeling so well lately.”

“Do you remember that I suggested that you send him here, to me?”

She sighed. “It’s certainly not noge'a now, Michoel.” He ignored what she said, as if he was trying to utilize every moment of the conversation. “And remember

that I asked you, jokingly, if you think they kidnapped me and that I want Yosef to help me escape?”

“Yes, you said something like that.”

“Well…it wasn’t quite a joke.”

“What?!” Hinda sat down on the nearest chair. “You were kidnapped?! That sounds…”

“Not exactly kidnapped.” He was speaking very cautiously. “But this place…it’s not so clear what exactly it is, Hinda. What is clear is that I am not being allowed to go and come as I please, right? So, I need Yosef to help me get out of here. I have a few plans, none of which are complicated or dangerous. After all, on the outside, these people try to present themselves as law-abiding citizens.”

“But…” Hinda tried to collect her thoughts. “Maybe I should come instead of him, Michoel. He’s in the hospital right now. He can’t exactly fly in.”

“You won’t be able to help me, Hinda,” her uncle explained. He suddenly sounded very despondent. “I need him. They might agree to accept him, ostensibly to treat him. But they’ll never let you step foot in this place.”

“Wait a minute, Michoel. Can you explain to me where you are?”

The door to the house opened behind her. Dov and Martin walked in, apparently back from their meeting with the lawyer. Martin’s Hebrew was much better

than Dov’s English, but English was the language they usually spoke. Sometimes she needed to translate a word or two for her husband, but for the most part, they seemed to manage well. She really admired Dov for his dedication to this project. When she had made inquiries about Dov, before she’d gone out with him, she had heard that he was a ba’al chessed, but now she was seeing this aspect of him quite strikingly.

Only now, Dov's talking with Martin was making it hard for her to hear Michoel. As it was, Michoel sounded different; the conversations with him were not clear, and the reception did not seem to be very good.

“I don’t really know where I am,” he answered slowly.

“I’m in some type of hospital or clinic, and it’s all natural or something like that, but it’s hard for me to clearly define it. It's not like I know all the other patients and what they're doing here.”

“Do they have a specific method that they employ? A treatment protocol?” Hinda turned her back to the kitchen, and the voices coming from inside it, as she tried to focus.

“It’s mostly healing through conversations, and through medicines that they concoct themselves. I think that their specialty is mainly mental health, but not only. For example, I feel perfectly normal, baruch Hashem.” He studied his legs, splayed out in front of him as he sat on the bench. “Mentally, at least.”

“And physically?”

“I’m also fine. A bit weaker than I remember being, but after such a bad accident, that makes sense.”

“Of course,” Hinda agreed. “So…what’s the problem there?”

He took a deep breath. “That they insist that the only way I’m supposed to heal is their way.”

“What do you mean?”

He was quiet. She heard some noise in the background; perhaps he had stood up and started walking, moving away from a certain spot. Or someone was passing by and he preferred to stop talking for a few seconds.

“Hinda?” he suddenly said.

“Yes, I’m here.”

“Something here…is just not completely normal. This conversation, for example, is different from our other ones, because I'm using someone’s personal cell phone

and I’m talking to you without a staff member present. Because until today, besides my first call to you, they are always around when I call. I can’t say a single word without their supervision.”

“Why?”

“Supposedly so that you shouldn’t talk about details that might awaken my memory in an artificial way, not naturally, which is harmful, in their view.”

“I think that’s a well-known method,” she said cautiously.

“Yes,” he agreed. “But it’s not only that. This whole thing of me not being able to come and go at my own will—again, supposedly for the same reason. And I have no idea where exactly I am…” He suddenly stopped. “Do you think that I’m just being paranoid? That my suspicions are foolish? Does it seem normal that I sometimes feel like I’m being held captive?”

“I don’t know,” she said, in the same cautious tone. “I agree with you that there’s something suspicious about this behavior. I don’t understand how it is that they don’t ask to speak to us, your family. How come they did not look for us and try to be in touch with us during that time that you didn’t remember anything? On the other hand, maybe this is their treatment method… What do I know!”

“Tell me, how old am I?” he suddenly asked. She was caught off guard. “I’m not sure I know your exact age.”

“I see that you don’t want to awaken my memory in an artificial way…” There was half a smile in Michoel’s words. “In any case, this is a point that really confuses me. At first I thought I was about thirty or forty, but now I think I’m a bit older than that. I’m more than fifty, right?”

“Um, yes,” she said. “Look in the mirror.”

“That’s the problem. There are no mirrors here.”

“No mirrors? Why not?”

“No mirrors or pictures. That’s part of their treatment method,” he said scornfully. “But in the meantime, if Yosef can’t come to me right now, try to find out where there is a natural healing clinic in America—I have a feeling it’s in the southern part of the country—that opposes mirrors and pictures for all kinds of reasons, and mostly treats mental health and brain problems.

Oh, and it’s named for someone Skulholt.”

“Wait a minute, I want to write this down,” Hinda said. She stood up and opened the drawer in the bookcase. “We’ll look into it.”

“We? I prefer that you don’t share this with your children yet.”

“I meant Dov, not the children.”

“Dov….?” He was quiet. “Oy, I’m sorry, Hinda. I totally forgot that you got remarried. Now that I remember, I think there are days when I do recall these things…” It was her turn to be quiet, as she took out a small, green memo pad and a pen. Behind her, the voices had died down, but she didn’t notice.

“Maybe all of these problems are my own personal ones, and these people are just fine?” His voice sounded weak, frustrated, defeated even.

“We’ll check it out, b’ezras Hashem."

“And if my suspicions are correct? An—” He stopped in the middle of the word, and for the first time, she noticed the silence coming from the kitchen and hallway. Had Dov and Martin gone out somewhere? And why was Michoel suddenly quiet?

“I have to hang up,” he suddenly whispered. “I’ll try to be in touch in the next few days. In the meantime, try to find out some information, okay?”

“Was that Yosef, Hinda?” Dov suddenly appeared behind her. “I’m sorry to have overheard your conversation, but usually you speak to him in Hebrew, not English.”

“It was Michoel,” Hinda replied, her gaze fixed on the green memo pad.

“What about him? Is everything alright?” Dov’s voice sounded a bit distant now.

“I’m not sure.”

“What does that mean?”

“Either there are problems in this place where he is hospitalized, or he thinks there are problems.”

“Both options sound bad. Which of the two sounds more likely to you?”

“This facility where he is really does sound a bit strange,” she said slowly. “But between that and the feeling that he needs help to get out of there…”

“It’s usually not very easy to get out of mental health

facilities.”

“True, but sometimes, he has a feeling that he is in the hands of…” She looked for a word that would be less harsh, but couldn’t find one. Finally, she decided that if she was already telling Dov, it was best to give him the murky picture, harsh as it sounded. “In the hands of kidnappers,” she concluded.

“Kidnappers,” he echoed.

“Even if it’s a bit exaggerated, what do you say about a hospital that doesn’t let patients look in the mirror? And that has no pictures? It sounds like some kind of closed facility that really is not a good place for Michoel.”

Someone on the side suddenly cleared his throat. She’d almost forgotten that Martin existed. “Excuse me for interfering,” he said in English. “And I’m also sorry that I heard some of your phone conversation… but I once read about a group like this. I don’t know what they are called, but they are against mirrors, and sometimes break them in public places. Maybe they have some facilities.”

“There are all kinds of crazy people in the world,” Dov said. “But who says Michoel landed up with any of them? Maybe his caregivers don’t let him look in the mirror because they prefer that he remembers how he looks with his own memory? You explained to me that they don’t give him any information because they want his brain to remember by itself…”

“Right,” she agreed.

“And based on the impressions I have of him from the past, he’s the suspicious type, your uncle.” As he spoke, Dov sorted some sefarim and put them in their place on the shelf. He lined them up carefully, and then started moving them around from one shelf to the next. “And I’m saying this for a reason, so that you shouldn’t get too nervous, and also because maybe you can try to reassure him. The fact is…it’s a little hard for him with new people. He doesn’t easily accept others' good intentions.”

Hinda nodded quietly. The encounter between Dov and Michoel at her engagement had not gone swimmingly at all.

“MY EVERY MOVE IS controlled.”

Lemon Flavor:

Bakers Choice Lemon Crème

1. Preheat oven to 350°. Line 2 9x13 pans with parchment paper.

2. Prepare the cake: In the bowl of an electric mixer, beat butter and sugar until creamy. Add remaining ingredients, except flour, and beat to combine. Lower speed, and mix in the flour until mixture is smooth.

3. Divide the batter between the two pans. Bake for 20-25 minutes, until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

4. Freeze the cake for 1-2 hours. Use a stacker to cut into circles (You will be able to get 9-11 circles from each pan). Use the handle of a wooden spoon to indent the center of each circle. Move the spoon from side to side to enlarge the indent slightly.

5. Prepare the strawberry filling: Use an immersion blender to puree the strawberries. Place in a small pot with 2 Tbsp confection sugar and cornstarch. Bring to a boil and simmer for a few minutes until thickened, stirring constantly to prevent burning.

6. Reserve 6 Tbsp of the mixture (for the strawberry cheese frosting). Add 2 Tbsp confection sugar to the remaining strawberry filling.

7. Fill half of the butter cake indents with strawberry filling and the other half with lemon crème. Add a bit of filling over the indents as well.

8. Prepare the frosting: Beat butter until fluffy. Add sugar and cream cheese and beat until smooth.

Divide the frosting in half.

For strawberry flavor: Add 6 Tbsp reserved strawberry filling and mix well.

For lemon flavor: Add ½ cup lemon crème and mix well. Place each flavor in a piping bag and snip off the edge. Starting from the outer rim of the cakes, pipe a large swirl of frosting over each cake.

Note: Refrigerating the frosting before piping will give you the best results. Prepare the frosting in advance or while the cakes are in the freezer.

Yield: Approx 20 miniatures

CINNAMON CHEESE BITES

Dough:

1 stick butter, softened

1 stick margarine, softened

6 Tbsp sour cream

2 ¼ cup flour

¼ cup confection sugar

1 tsp vanilla extract

Cinnamon glaze:

1 cup light brown sugar

1 tsp cinnamon

1 tsp oil

2 Tbsp water

Cheese Filling:

1 (8 oz) block cream cheese

1 packet instant vanilla pudding

1 white dairy chocolate bar, melted

1 Tbsp milk

Topping:

Dairy white chocolate, melted Chinese pecans

1. Preheat oven to 350°. Prepare 3 mini muffin pans (no need to grease them).

2. Place all ingredients in a large bowl. Knead with a mixer or by hand until a soft, smooth dough forms.

3. Fill each muffin cup with a tablespoon of dough. Press the dough down in the center and up the sides of the muffin cups.

4. Combine glaze ingredients in a small bowl. If glaze is too thick to spread, add a little bit of water.

5. Bake the muffin cups for 20 minutes. Remove from oven and press down the centers of the dough again. Brush a generous amount of cinnamon glaze over the cups. Bake for an additional 10 minutes.

6. Blend all cheese filling ingredients until smooth. Fill the muffin cups to the top with the filling. Freeze until cheese filling is solid, about 2 hours.

7. Dip the tops of the cups in melted chocolate. Place a pecan in the center. Drizzle with more chocolate.

Yields: approx 3 dozen miniatures

Cookie Base:

2 sticks butter, softened

1 cup light brown sugar

½ cup sugar

2 eggs

1 Tbsp vanilla sugar

1. Preheat oven to 350°. Grease a baking sheet.

2. Prepare the cookie base: Combine all ingredients, except flour and chocolate, in a large bowl. Mix well, either with an electric mixer or by hand. Knead in the flour, then mix in the chopped chocolate.

3. Spread evenly onto the baking sheet, using wet hands if necessary. Bake 20-25 minutes. Remove from oven and let cool completely. Trim the edges and cut into bars.

4. Prepare the cheese frosting: Beat butter until fluffy. Add sugar and cream cheese and beat to combine. Fill a piping bag with the mixture. Pipe large dollops of frosting randomly over the bars.

5. Fill the space between the cheese frosting with caramel cream, mini marshmallows, chopped chocolate and any other desired toppings. Drizzle with melted chocolate.

Recap: Ahuva meets her new principal to prepare her for the upcoming school year in Bnos Batsheva. Faigy has a hard time falling asleep and confides in Tehilla late at night. When she is late for teaching the next morning, Chava agrees to substitute for her niece.

CHAPTER THIRTEEN:

The whole thing was surreal. The last time Chava had stepped foot into a classroom was when she graduated high school. It was like walking into a parallel universe. Mrs. Stewart, having received heads up from Faigy a mere fifteen minutes ago, eyed Chava warily as she limped into her office.

Chava had long learned to put up with the stares that her handicap garnered, but for some reason, she felt a pinch at Mrs. Stewart’s cold reception. Yes, she was handicapped, but shouldn’t a principal, more than anyone else in the world, realize that outward appearances were in no way a reflection of what is going on inside?

Despite Mrs. Stewart’s obvious discomfort, she had no choice but to slowly lead Chava to the classroom that was now filled with the noise of sixth graders without a teacher.

“Good Luck,” Mrs. Stewart glanced at her phone and nodded as she clicked down the hallway, leaving Chava to walk in alone. Chava eyed the classroom door nervously. Should she just walk in and introduce herself? She gingerly pushed the door open with her good hand, but before she could think of what to do next, the door was flung open by a redcheeked sixth grader.

“Are you the substitute?” At Chava’s nod, she bounced up and announced, “Guys, we have a sub!”

Chava surveyed the messy scene. There was a cluster of girls huddled over something in the corner, one girl sitting on the floor, one with her head down on her desk, and the rest were milling about the room like they had nothing better to do. Snapping back to the present, she shut the light the way she suddenly remembered her sixth grade teacher doing.

“It’s dark in here.” Surprisingly, there was no defiance in the student’s voice. She sounded confused. Why would someone close the

When even that didn’t help the noise die down, or the girls get seated, Chava decided to try something new. It was something so out character, something that went against every value that she had ever raised her children with, that only once she did it, did she feel the numbness of doing something insane. She screamed. ***

“Faigy?” I was in a good mood and the effects of last’s night conversation hadn’t worn off. When I got no answer, I knocked on the door. When I heard the rise and fall of her soft voice on the phone, I realized that I was intruding. Yes, intruding on my own property. I had to accept that, for as long as Faigy lived here, my room was shared property. I needed permission to enter. I decided to ignore the fact that I didn’t really need anything from my room because I wanted to feel annoyed. I prepared a blueberry smoothie instead, and then realized that I had wanted something from my roomI had a question that was bothering me about what Faigy had confided in me last night. My thoughts were interrupted by a gentle knock on the door. My mother was home.

My heart skipped a beat as a I greeted her. It struck me that our roles were reversed, and this time, I was asking my mother about her day, just like she did for me every day. My heart sank at the sight of my mother’s face. One thing was certain: It had not gone well.

“My day was okay, I guess,” my mother smiled as she put her bag down on the marbled counter. “I did it for Faigy, but I can’t see myself doing this again.” I saw a shudder run through her body as she repeated, “I can’t see myself doing this again.”

“It’s hard to be a sub,” I said, trying to make things good. “No one ever listens to subs, even in my school.”

“But it’s even harder if the class is impossible to begin with,” Faigy said, entering the kitchen. My mother turned around to face her. “I’m sure you were amazing, considering the

circumstances,” she continued gratefully. “I don’t know what I would’ve told Mrs. Stewart had I had no replacement. I am not sure what would be worse, telling her I needed the day off or coming in an hour late to teach.”

“I’m glad I saved the day.” I took this as my cue to serve the delicious meal that I had worked hard to prepare.

“That’s so sweet of you, Tehilla!” My mother exclaimed when I brought in a steaming pan of fettuccini alfredo topped with shiitake mushrooms. “You really didn’t have to.”

I sat down near my mother and filled a bowl with creamy pasta, breathing in the hot steam that rose above it. “I didn’t have to,” I said quietly, “but I wanted to.” We ate in silence until I served the next course- a crunchy salad with mini fried mozzarella sticks in it. Chayala joined us and chattered about her day in school. There always seemed to be fun things happening in her young and uncomplicated life. Finally, when she scampered off to do her homework, my mother turned to me with an earnest expression on her face.

Her eyes shone with compassion when she said, “So, Tehilla, aren’t you going to tell me about next year? Why didn’t you tell me that Ahuva was joining you for eleventh grade?”

The tension in the room was thick. I almost choked on a piece of lettuce. “H..h…ow do you know?” It was a lame question, but I couldn’t think of anything else.

“I met Ahuva’s mother. Apparently, she is some kind of therapist in the school that Faigy teaches in. She was shocked that I didn’t know.” I decided to respond with silence. My mother sighed and filled a tall glass cup with the creamy coffee shake that I had prepared. “Look, you don’t have to tell my everything, Tehilla. But I would expect that you should feel comfortable telling me this. Especially this! Ahuva coming to school will be a gamechanger for you. There’s no use denying it. In fact, I have been toying with the idea of having you switch schools to a regular Bais Yaakov for eleventh grade for a little while now.”

I could see my mother regretted her last sentence as soon as it left her mouth.

“Ma,” I began. My voice trembled. “I don’t

think that I can ever talk to anyone about what went on between me and Ahuva without completely breaking down. The passing of the years dulled the pain, but it didn’t take away its repercussions. Therefore, I need to be in Bnos Batsheva. Don’t you see it, Ma? It is her fault that I landed up here, but it is also her fault that I still need to stay here. So she has no right to take away the one place that I truly feel at home in.”

Faigy’s mother sniffled. Faigy was perceptive and realized that this was a difficult decision for her mother. But it was all finalized a little less than a year later, and the Klein family found a new home in sunny Arizona.

Surrounded by palm trees and nature, Faigy’s mother and new father started a new life for themselves. They didn’t realize that when they moved on, they left behind a little girl, whose heart ached so much that even the passing of time couldn’t take the hurt away.

“Bella, tell me again.” Faigy’s eyes were hyper focused on her student’s face. Her forehead creased in concern at the words that came out of her student’s mouth.

“My parents hate me.” Bella’s chocolate brown eyes filled. “They even said so themselves. I always think that one day I will get big and be fine, but my older sister is still suffering, and she already graduated high school.”

Faigy placed a hand on her shoulder. She was relieved at the progress. Bella didn’t shrug it off.

“Bella, I am your teacher and I really care about you. I will take care of this right away. Please feel free to keep coming to me with any concerns or even to share good news.”

Bella’s face darkened and Faigy instantly knew that she had just opened a pandora’s box. It wasn’t just her words that were bothering Faigy. Something niggled at the corner of her brain. Oh. It was this.

What bothered Faigy most and had every fiber of her body wincing in protest was the whoosh of air and excitement at being the teacher to help. She had just donned a superhero cape, and despite the part of her that screamed how wrong this all was, Faigy was determined to enjoy every second of it.

Shabbos is a more relaxed day for most of us, which in turn also leads to laxness in the food department. There are many tips I can give you for support for Shabbos, but for now, let’s understand how to menu plan for the week properly. Firstly, what should my menu contain?

Everyone needs the same types of nutrients — such as vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, protein and fat. (Children, however, need different amounts of specific nutrients at different ages.) Mortgage Market Update

To help you better understand the mortgage market update, we’ll elaborate on the loans we have on the Market Update.

The mortgage market update is information about standard QM (Qualified Mortgage) loans. QM loans are loans that meet the criteria established by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) to ensure borrowers are offered mortgages they can reasonably afford. There are several types of QM loans; we'll discuss the common ones.

Conforming loan is the typical, conventional loan that meets the guidelines and loan limits set by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the two government-sponsored enterprises that buy and guarantee most conventional mortgages.

There are several types of conforming loans There’s a 30 year loan, where the loan is divided, or amortized, into 30 years, and a 15 year loan, where the loan is amortized into 15 years. (There are options of doing 25, 20 and 10 years as well.) The loan can be a fixed rate where the rate is locked for the life of the loan or could be an ARM - an adjustable-rate mortgage, also known as a variable-rate mortgage, where the rate is not locked and can change over time. Typically, the initial interest rate is fixed for a certain period (e g , 5 years, 7 years), after which it adjusts periodic market conditions

I was recently walking along a crowded street in our community, minding my own business. I had plans for the day, that included two meetings, one important conference call, and a late-afternoon chavrusah.

I was deep in thought, trying to plan my schedule in a way that would be the most efficient. As I strode rapidly down the street, I was more focused on my plans than on the goings-on around me.

Maybe that explains why I nearly crashed head-first into a statue set directly in the middle of the crowded sidewalk.

Ooops!

“I’m so sorry,” I told the statue, who was actually a heimishe young man, approximately my age.

He didn’t react.

It took me just a split-second to figure out why a healthy, functional young man would freeze in place as if he’d been struck by lightning.

He was busy.

The blinking, flickering screen cast its eerie shadows on his face as his fingers did their frenzied dance of the infamous tap-swipe-tap routine.

I stood there for a long moment, trying to decide whether I could pull him out of his self-induced trance. For crying out loud, this man was

standing frozen in the center of the main street in our community! People were walking around him, as if he were a statue that was there to stay.

He didn’t see me. He didn’t hear me when I said, “Uh –excuse me…” Instead, he tapped and swiped and then laughed out loud.

Now he wasn’t just a statue disrupting the flow of human traffic. He was a laughing, tapping, swiping statue that cut a comical figure in the midst of a perfectly ordinary street.

I continued walking, slightly bemused by the scene. When I reached the end of the street and was forced to wait for the light to turn green, I turned around for another glimpse.

Yes.

The statue was still standing there, glued to his spot. From afar, it looked even more ridiculous than it had appeared up-close. People didn’t even blink when they saw him standing there. They merely walked around him, like they would do with any inanimate object obstructing their path.

It was frightening, to be honest. It was hard to watch a grown man reduced to an imbecilic statue look-alike, all thanks to a small flickering screen the size of his palm.

When they say that technology could drastically change a person beyond recognition, they mean that in its literal sense. Take it from me. I saw a human become a statue, just like that!
