Great question. First, it is important to understand what the term annual checkup means. It may mean different things to different people. People have very differing views of wellness and health, which is related to upbringing, health attitude, and family history.
SEND US YOUR QUESTIONS
I think that the main goal of a well visit is to be aware of one’s current health status and risk factors as well as where you stand in relation to your risk factors. For example, if someone has a strong family history of heart disease, it is important to be aware of and in control of their blood pressure and cholesterol levels. If one has a family history of diabetes they need to understand the relationship between a high carb diet, a lack of exercise, and diabetes. These people may be recommended to start medications at a lower threshold than the general population. People with a family history of cancer or other genetic diseases need to be aware of their specific screening guidelines.
Preventive medicine also includes talking about activities that are important points for everyone

I'm in my 20's, young and healthy, why do I need to go to my primary care provider for an annual checkup?
across the board. Healthy eating habits, physical activity, smoking cessation, alcohol overuse, and vaping are all topics that we all know are important, but they are necessary to discuss and reinforce.
It is also important to have a medical home, which is a practice and provider where your comprehensive medical record is kept and updated periodically. This is important so that trends in your health status can be seen and any concerning changes noticed in a timely manner. For example, changes in weight or vital signs or body habitus can be noticed and addressed.
As with everything else, any questions or concerns should be discussed with your medical provider and of course remember that only Hashem is the true rofeh cholim and all that we do as medical providers is his shlichus and your hishtadlus and that should be the central point of all medical care.

OF CHAPTER 86: Naomi secretly asks Suzy where the phone is. Suzy has her husband direct Naomi to where the phone is hidden in the forest. Naomi calls Hanter and tells them the situation, and that they urgently need them to come right away. She gives as much description of the area as she can.
Hiding inside the Wangels’ roof, Binyamin waits until there is absolute silence from the family, which only happens at 4:00 am. At that point, he lowers himself by rope to the top floor of the house, which the Wangels hardly use. Binyamin finds a closet there, which is filled with Wehrmacht uniforms…and two large, heavy boxes: exactly what he was looking for.
Beretta / 93R
On a stack of rusting rifles in the first box lay a wooden box on a slant, and this was what was etched into it. Binyamin opened the cover and looked at the metal object there. What a shame he’d never had a real opportunity to examine this thing from up close. Maybe he’d had an opportunity, but not a real one.
A few years ago, which now felt like at least a thousand years, he had been a young fourteen-year-old boy who had successfully finished his studies in the preschool, and had also been through his stint working at the kennels. Finally, he’d reached his training period at the factory. The job he’d been assigned was errand boy for Max Sherer, who worked sewing the furs and finishing them. Binyamin had mainly made him
tea and searched for his needles that kept falling on the floor. He’d also watched and asked questions, and when Max was in a good mood, he’d allowed the young Binyamin to practice on some damaged bits of fur.
Then, one day, when Max didn’t come and the other worker was busy on the other side of the factory, Binyamin had—of his own accord—sat down at the corner table, picked up a needle, and began to work. Miraculously, his gamble paid off, and on that day, Leo Sherer and Josef Wangel came for an inspection—and were impressed at the outcome of the boy’s efforts, despite his never having had any professional training.
From that point on, a new period began in his life and in that of Mamme and Naomi. Wangel and Leo both greatly admired his excellent work, and they rewarded him in all kinds of ways. Leo would speak with him at length, explaining the different stages of the fur production process. Rumor had it that Leo considered him a potential successor in managing the factory. But as Binyamin grew older, and Leo
realized how clearly Orthodox the boy’s worldview was, his attitude steadily cooled, until it was completely transformed.
The Nazi, in contrast, continued giving preferential treatment to the youth, who had raised their sales levels to a scale unseen until then. This was both because of his speed, which increased production, and because of his flawless work. And once, as a token of appreciation, Wangel had shown Binyamin his personal weapon from up close. Not that he let him load the pistol and practice shooting himself, like he sometimes let Leo Sherer do, but he did show Binyamin how to change the cartridge and, in general, how to use the gun.
gun on himself, and sometimes Hauptmann Katarina and the gefreiters did as well.
Binyamin took the rectangular wooden box out and then turned his attention to the other box. It was locked with a bar, which he slid to the side, and then opened the cover.
Inside were ten smaller boxes of various sizes. On two of them, he noticed the same logo that was on “his” gun. Those were probably cartridges of bullets, but he couldn’t really figure out how to use them without having any prior experience. They might explode in his hands!
Mamme was very displeased when she’d heard about it. “Nothing good comes from being close to them!” she’d said angrily. Indeed, nothing at all had come from it. If Binyamin could only remember now something of Josef’s explanation about the pistol that he’d taken out of his belt then—if it was such a pistol like this one in the first place—that could be of such benefit to him now!
“Stop, Wangel! Stop, because I am also armed!”
But Binyamin didn’t remember. He stood and stared at the pistol—which looked very new— nestled in the velvet-lined box. If he wasn’t mistaken, the gun that Wangel had shown him then was very different from this one.
In any case, there were no cartridges or bullets in this box. There were only old rifles that didn’t look like they worked at all, and they each had various symbols and letters on them. So was this the sum total of all the weapons that the Wangel family possessed?
Not exactly. Josef always had a
But there was something else there, too: two thin booklets. With a trembling hand, Binyamin took the gun out of the box and studied it. It was likely that it wasn’t stored loaded, right? He turned it from side to side, his ears constantly on alert to the half-open door. Putting the pistol back into its box, he turned to the booklets. The first one—which was thicker—had a drawing of a long, barreled weapon, which was very different from the one he was holding. But the second one depicted “his” gun. And the booklet was filled with drawings: a whole series that was apparently a guide on how to handle this weapon.
He took the two matching cartridges marked “Beretta.” Based on their markings, each one had twenty bullets. He put the two into his pocket so that he should have forty opportunities to save himself. And hopefully not only himself.

“I spoke with the deputy ambassador. They cannot cooperate with us without an

approval from the higher ups.”
Moshe Hanter was standing on the sidewalk, with one foot on the step of the minibus. “We don’t have spare time to wait for him. But he did let me speak to two security guards from there, who agreed to come with us. Privately, of course, but with the backing of the embassy that will be in touch with them, in case of an emergency.” He winked to his son and scanned the people sitting in the vehicle. “Now we’re going to pick them up; they’re waiting for us with a few other members of the community. You have the map, right?”
“Yes,” Bentzy said, his right foot tapping nervously. “But I didn’t have time to tell Dena anything. She’s going to be worried.”
“When we come back, b’ezras Hashem, you’ll tell her everything. Until then, Mommy will keep her updated; she does know. Meanwhile, put on your tefillin, and then you’ll give them to me.”
Was he hearing sounds from inside the house? Someone was walking there, near the stairs.
After thinking for a second, he pushed the box of old rifles into the closet and closed the doors, but he stuck the pistol and the booklets into the box of ammunition, locked the box, and then retreated with his loot to the fireplace. First, he would thin out the Wangels’ arms stockpile.
He looked with dismay at the ash that his feet had left around the floor, but it was too dangerous now to linger around so he could deal with it, when someone might come up at any minute.
The rope was still hanging inside the fireplace. With his lips pressed together, Binyamin tied it to the handle of the box, and hoped that his little delivery would get to the top in one piece, without the bar or the hinges of the cover coming apart. He himself climbed up and then began to pull the rope.
The box made it safely to the rooftop.
He carefully placed it beside him and opened the cover, listening
carefully for any noises from in the house. The faint noises he had heard before had gone quiet, and no one came up.
Binyamin opened the box and, with extreme caution, by the light of the moon, handled the gun according to the illustrated instructions. He felt his fingers shaking; maybe it was the fact that over the last thirty-six hours, all he’d eaten were a few cookies. But the tension and excitement that flowed through his veins overpowered his weakness. When he finished, the skies were light pink. He put the gun into his pocket and davened Shacharis. Then he lay down, exhausted. He’d have to push off his thoughts about food for a few more hours, until night fell again. He could not return now to the camp area, and he also couldn’t go down and cover up the sooty tracks he’d left. He’d wait, with the hope that no one would look for him here, and when night fell, he’d return to the camp and make it clear to all that there was no choice. They’d have to confront the Wangels as a united, strong group and present them with the truth.
And yet… It would be better to find a relatively safe area for the women, the children, and the elderly to take cover…just in case. ***
Binyamin opened his eyes, squinting in the sunlight. What time was it? It looked like it was around nine a.m. He’d fallen asleep, either from exhaustion, or weakness, or a combination of both.
His mind was becoming a bit clearer, and his thoughts wandered again to the tracks he’d left behind. Those were a real danger. The footprints might lead the Wangels right to where he was. Maybe he would take the risk and go down, even though any one of the Wangels was liable to come up to get something at any time…
Wait, there were noises from downstairs! Someone was coming up the stairs, talking loudly. It was Bernard. “I’m telling you, Father, we need to take action. The
younger Sherer wasn’t able to find him? But we need to talk to him! And to bring him face to face with Elkovitz, to see if we can believe their fantasy tale!”
Based on the volume, his father was probably on the floor below. Binyamin didn’t hear what Josef answered, but he did hear Bernard:
“And I’m going out to find him right now, Father, you hear me? Me, myself, and I! I’m going to equip myself, and it would be interesting to see if any one of the Je—” He fell silent for a fraction of a second, and then screeched, “Father, do you know who touched my Beretta?! Did one of the girls dare take it, instead of their own clunky pieces of junk?!”
Binyamin rose silently, sticking the gun into his pocket. The weapon was rather large, and the handle stuck out; he hoped it wouldn’t fall out. He hurried to the far edge of the roof, and, holding onto the drainpipe and the window cornices, he slid his way down to the back garden. From there, he flew to the gate that separated the Wangels’ estate from the camp. When he passed by the entrance, he heard a holler that sounded almost inhuman, coming from the third floor: “There he is, Father!!!”
Binyamin didn’t wait even a fraction of a second to turn and raise his eyes to the purple-faced Bernard who was standing at the window. He ran, half-crouched, in the field of wild grasses, where the growth was swaying in every direction, partially concealing him. He wouldn’t go into the bakery or the carpentry shop, which he was passing now. He didn’t want to put anyone in danger. But he had to find a place where he’d have some advantage, in light of the fact that he’d never used the gun before. “Stop, verfluchte Jude!” someone shouted somewhere behind him. Was it Bernard? No, it was his father, Hauptmann Josef. “Stop!”
But Binyamin didn’t stop. The distance between them was vast, and that was to his advantage. He ran behind the residential huts, in the empty area that separated them from the wall on the west side. Behind that wall was an abyss. He got to the kennels, and out of breath, turned toward the cemetery. He had no time to look around him, but here and there, he noticed people gathering, watching the chase in dread and fear. Let them go away, so they shouldn’t put themselves in danger!
“Stop, you son of the Satan!” he heard Josef Wangel calling in the distance. “Freeze in place, Schvirtz, or I’m going to shoot!”
Hashem!
Binyamin leaped behind the nearest matzeivah and crouched at its foot, drawing out the gun from his pocket. “Stop, Wangel!” he called, without making himself visible, and with his left hand, he pulled out the pin of the gun. He heard a click. The weapon was ready. “Stop, because I am also armed!”

“Mazel tooooooooooov,” Malky squealed into Henny’s ear. She wrapped her in a tight bear hug, then quickly loosened as she remembered Henny’s delicate vort dress, freshly applied makeup, and soft curls nestled on her shoulders. It wouldn’t do for the perfect kallah look to get messed up before the guests even started arriving.
Malky stepped back and took a good look at her sister. “You look stunning,” she pronounced.
“Thanks,” Henny grinned. “Now come join the pictures!”
Malky posed with Henny, with all the sisters together, with sisters and sisters-in-law. Then it was time for the full family photo. Malky ran to find her kids. She had left the baby at home with a babysitter, but decided to bring Rivky and Ruchie along.
Spotting Ruchie at the side with a tear-streaked face, and Rivky in front of a table, systematically knocking down a platter of miniatures, one by one, Malky couldn’t decide where to go first. She hesitated a fraction of a second, ran over to Rivky, told her sternly not to touch any food unless she was planning to eat it, then grabbed her arm and schlepped her along to
Ruchie.
“What happened?” she asked with as much patience as she could muster, trying not to think of the rest of the family gathered in front of the camera.
“Rivky threw my plate on the floor,” Ruchie whimpered.
“Don’t worry, Mommy will get you a new plate with lots of yummy nosh in two minutes when we finish taking pictures. Now come with Mommy,” she hurried both daughters along, swiping at Ruchie’s tears and hoping her face would be clear in the pictures.
“The little girls should stand in the front,” the photographer directed. Malky nudged them over to the front. Ruchie stood exactly where she was placed, but Rivky ran over to her Bubby.
“Bubby! I wanna stand next to you,” she declared. “You can stand next to me in two minutes when we finish taking the picture, zeeskeit,” Layala said. “For now go stand next to Ruchie.”
“No,” Rivky said, her face stubborn. The room
erupted in exclamations.
“We don’t say ‘no’ to a Bubby.”
“Go stand next to Ruchie.”
“We have to listen to the photographer so the pictures will come out nice.”
“All the girls are standing in the front.”
“That kid has serious chutzpa,” Malky thought she heard someone mutter.
Rivky still hadn’t budged, and didn’t look like she was planning to move anytime soon. Malky sighed and walked over to Rivky.
“You have to come stand in the front,” she said.
“No, no, NO!” Rivky yelled, her voice rising each time she repeated the word. “I WANT TO STAND NEXT TO BuBBY!”
“Rivky, you can stand next to Bubby after the pictures. Now we need to listen to the photographer, because he’s the one taking the pictures.”
“NO! I wanna stand next to Bubby by the pictures cuz she’s my favorite Bubby!” Rivky insisted. Malky winced and hoped her shvigger wasn’t there yet. She was the type to come early.
“Maybe we can take another picture after and you can stand next to Bubby in that picture. But now you need to come in the front,” Malky repeated.
her in the right spot?”
Snap, snap. Flash, flash, flash. Malky smiled widely, as befitted the sister of the kallah, the slightest tinge of red brushing the ends of her cheeks the only sign of what had just occurred.
“Henny! Mazel tov!” a few of Henny’s friends ran over, shrieking, as soon as the pictures were done. Malky pushed the incident to the back of her mind and focused on greeting the family, friends, and acquaintances who kept piling in.
Three hours later, the simcha was winding down, the large room emptying out a bit.
“Whew! I’m exhausted,” her sister Shiffy said through a yawn.
Seeing her words were getting nowhere, Malky motioned to Shulem to come help her. Lifting Rivky into the air, Shulem gently placed her down in the correct place. Rivky ran right back next to Bubby.
Family members shifted, antsy to get the picture done already, and Malky spotted some guests at the entrance to the hall.
“Rivky, if you stand nicely next to Ruchie, you’ll get a treat,” she tried.
“I already had lots of treats, and I can take more from the tables,” Rivky informed her. “I wanna stand next to Bubby!”
Malky shrugged her shoulders in defeat and turned to the photographer. “I think you should just take the picture anyway. Maybe you can crop her out and put
“But it’s a happy type of exhaustion,” Malky countered. “It comes from all the excitement.”
Out of the corner of her eye, she noticed Rivky running wildly through the hall, with Shiffy’s fiveyear-old son chasing after her. Malky thought of stopping her, but realized it was impossible. Rivky was weaving between guests at top speed, while she would have to make her way through the hall in a more polite fashion and had no chance of catching up. Besides, there was a good chance Rivky wouldn’t listen---
CRASH! Malky spun around to see the source of the tremendous bang that had rippled through the hall and gasped. Rivky was collapsed in a heap on the floor, her face covered in blood. She ran over, her breath coming in shaggy spurts, her mind numb and blank.
Shulem was already calling Hatzalah. She grabbed a stack of napkins and knelt down beside Rivky.
“Can you hear me, Rivky?” she wanted to make sure Rivky was responsive.
“Yes,” Rivky whispered.
Malky dabbed at the blood and discovered a large cut above Rivky’s eye.
“What happened?” she asked.
Someone standing nearby told her that Rivky had banged right into the corner of a table.
After a few seconds that felt like an eternity, Hatzala
men burst into the hall. Examining Rivky, they declared that she would need to be taken to the emergency room for stitches.
Malky felt a tap on her shoulder and turned to see her shvigger standing over her.
“I’ll take Ruchie with me, pick up Leiby, and they’ll sleep by me for the night. Don’t worry about them. You and Shulem just go and take care of Rivky.”
“Thanks,” Malky managed a brief smile.
Zeesy brushed one last kiss onto Ruchie’s miniature face, then slipped out of the room. Glancing at Leiby, asleep in his carriage, she debated the pros and cons of transferring him to a crib, decided it was too risky, and padded to the kitchen. She prepared two cups of tea and sat down to wait for Yanky’s return from Maariv.
The utter stillness of the house, that was what got to her. She had always had Suri and Esti bustling around, busy with all their girly shtissim - talking on the phone, planning projects and parties with friends, even whipping up delicacies in the kitchen. She used to enjoy the moment peace descended on the house, if she was around for it – many times it was after she had already retired for the night. But now the peacefulness lasted all day and all night, and she wasn’t enjoying it.
“Now is the time to sit back and shep nachas,” her friends had informed her. “Also to make up for all the years of lost sleep, and don’t forget to stock up your freezer for when the einiklach come.”
Zeesy disagreed. Sometimes peace and quiet was a little too peaceful and too quiet. She was brimming with joy at the wonderful bracha, that all her kids were married. And even the first few months after Esti’s chasuna, she had been busy hosting the new couple and spoiling them a bit. But now that Esti had flown off to Eretz Yisrael, and with Suri still living there four years after her own marriage, she was bereft of her girls. At least she still had Shulem and Malky living nearby. As much as a daughter-in-law was not the same as a daughter, Malky was amazing, and she was lucky to have such a special daughter-in-law.
Her thoughts turned to Rivky, and she realized with a pang that she should be using these few minutes to say Tehillim. Getting up to bring her Tehillim from the shelf, she worried about Rivky. She didn’t only need to daven for her physical health. Just as important was davening that her behavior improve. Otherwise, what would become of her?

It can catch you off guard.
Your daughter walks in eyes flashing and says something like:
“Chani’s parents bought her a $350.00 shabbos outfit - why do I always have to settle?” or “Everyone’s going away from midwinter break except us, I hate
being the only one stuck in the city!”
You take a deep breath. Maybe you feel hurt. Maybe defensive. May be tempted to snap, “You should be grateful for what you do have!”
You’re not alone - these moments are hard. But here’s the thing: jealousy isn’t about what they have or don’t have. It’s about what they think it means.
Stay calm and curious. Even if it sounds ridiculous to you _ try not to shut it down. Instead of “You are so spoiled!” try: “That sounds frustrating. Tell me more.”
Just holding space for them to talk can lower the emotional temperature-FAST.
SEE THE STORY BENEATH
Sometimes it’s not about the outfit or the vacation. It’s about wanting to feel included, accepted, special.
Take this example:
Your daughter tells you her friend Got a Tiffany bracelet for her birthday, and she’s dying to get one, as well. Before you remind her of the outrageous course of the bracelet, clause. What she might really be saying is: “I don’t feel seen. I want to feel pretty too.”
Another one:
Your 18-year-old son hears his friends are going on a road trip out west for Bein Hazmanim – and you’re not comfortable letting him go. What he is really feeling is: “I wish we were that kind of family. I feel left out.”
Once your teen feels heard, you can guide the shift.
“It makes sense that you would want those things – we all want to feel good. Can we also talk about what really makes someone special?”
Or:
“It’s hard to feel left out – and it doesn’t mean anything is wrong with you.”
Over time, you’re helping her build inner strength, not just soothe the moment.
Your teens are watching how you handle these feelings in your own life, too.
Do you make quiet comments about who has a bigger house or a fancier car? No judgement – we all do it sometimes. But being real and open about your process helps your teens navigate their own process.
Your teens aren’t selfish or ungrateful - they are growing. Jealousy is just one of the messy, very human feelings that show up along the way.
You don’t need perfect words. You just need to be the steady, loving presence that reminds them: You are enough. You are seen. You matter – no matter what anyone else has.

Maimonides’ teachings are based on the unique combination of Torah, science and medicine. His writings carry a momentous moral message, and even after eight centuries still bear a remarkable relevance to the problems besetting us today. In stressing the dignity of the human body and the sanctity of human life in conformity with the fundamental tenets of the Jewish faith, Maimonides’ Medical Writings constitute a vivid exposition of the spiritual and ethical teachings of the Torah and a humble manifestation of G-d’s perfect design of the universe and all living things.

Who is Sholom Rubashkin? How did he land in jail with a near life-sentence, incriminated by the very people for whom he’d done so much good? What was the secret of his soaring faith? How did he survive—no, thrive!—as a Jew in the ugliness of a place called prison?
In this book, the famous story of Rabbi Rubashkin’s personal struggle is recounted to a teen readership, with many firsthand details and much of the emotion he and his family actually experienced. Also included are the Rubashkin kids’ perspectives of the ordeal, as they witnessed their father being arrested and

COOKIE RECIPE:
2 sticks margarine
1 ½ cups sugar
1 tbs vanilla sugar
2 eggs
3 ½ cups good quality flour
½ tsp salt
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
Cream marg, sugar and vanilla sugar on high speed. Add eggs. Reduce speed. Add salt and slowly add the flour.
Roll out dough and use cookie cutters to create your shapes.
Bake for 9-11 minutes.
Cookies should be a light yellow color, not brown.
ROYAL ICING RECIPE:
3 egg whites
1 lb confection sugar
Few drops of water
Beat egg whites with electric beaters until stiff. Reduce Speed. Slowly add confection sugar while mixing on low speed. Add a few drops of water. Combine.
You now have icing which is a thick consistency. This is good for outlining, writing, or adding any details on top of your cookie. For the cookie backgrounds or areas that need to be smooth, you need flood consistency. You do this by adding a few drops of water until you reach a smooth consistency.
Divide icing into separate bowls and add food coloring or gel as needed. You are now ready to fill piping bags!
If you have not yet attempted this unique collection of cookies, do not hesitate! Your kids are sure to love the process, and so will the lucky recipient of these adorable cookies. Unless of course, you keep it to enhance your Simchos Yom Tov in your own Succah!
COLORS NEEDED
• Outline. Gold (brown and yellow mixed) green, light and dark pink, red, yellow, orange, beige (light brown).
• Flood. Light blue
• Optional: silver glitter spray.
1. Using gold, pipe an outline. For something different, you can pipe tiny dots.
2. Pipe a mountain shape using green outline.
3. Fill with Green.
4. Pipe the Lichos shape using gold.
5. Flood the remaining area with light blue. Leave to dry overnight or minimum an hour.
6. If necessary, pipe and fill the Lichos again with gold.
7. Pipe flowers a pink dot, and darker pink dots around. Repeat a few times, with a darker pink dot and light pink dots around.
8. Pipe a gold banner for the name. Leave to dry.
9. Add the name Moishe in script lettering with a beige color.
10. Pipe the thunder zig zag lines in orange red and yellow. Add the gate at either sides of the mountain.
11. Pipe two crowns at either side of banner.
