So, for those of us who are unfamiliar with the Sarno method, it refers to the theory of Dr. John Sarno that a lot of pain that people experience is psychosomatic. This means pain is created or exacerbated by the mind in response to fears or stress. Dr. Sarno was a physiatrist who specialized in pain management at RUSK Institute in NYC and wrote several books in the 80’s and 90’s on the topic.

As anyone who suffers from chronic back pain, headaches, fibromyalgia, or any other chronic pain will tell you, stress definitely causes pain to flare up so it makes sense that mind control and relaxation will help control pain and can minimize the need for pain medication.

pain management should be celebrated and promoted. However, in some diseases where pain is an indication of serious pathology, relying on such a method to control pain can be dangerous and even life-threatening. For example, a person with Crohn’s disease having a pain episode may have a dangerous abscess or bowel obstruction, and not seeking qualified medical attention can cause severe complications.
An individual with an established diagnosis of migraine or tension headaches may be able to safely employ the Sarno method, but a headache with no cause or professional evaluation can be a sign of underlying pathology which is dangerous to ignore. So, just like every other medical treatment or intervention, consider risk vs. benefit and always consult with your primary health care provider before starting any new treatments.

NINE A.M. IS A COMPLETELY FICTIONAL STORY WHICH TAKES PLACE FIFTY YEARS AFTER THE HOLOCAUST. ESTHER RAPAPORT
RECAP OF CHAPTER 88: Iszak writes an apology note to Binyamin, admitting that it was he who had tattled on Binyamin to Leo Sherer. He sees Wangel chasing after Binyamin in the distance, and Bernard on his way to come and help his father. Trying to make things up to Binyamin, Iszak sends a branch in Bernard’s path, tripping him up.
Meanwhile, Binyamin and Josef Wangel face each other off, each waving his gun at the other. Binyamin realizes that Wangel’s gun is empty, and that is why he isn’t shooting him. He pleads with the other Jews to overpower Wangel and take him hostage, but when he sees that no one is doing so, he tells Wangel that he will have to do the job himself.
Sol Sherer and his cohorts try to physically stop Binyamin.
CHAPTER EIGHTY NINE
Urgent message faxed to Vienna: Hans,
Big Samson is going to fall, because its enemies have obtained weapons. If you don’t send help immediately—you will fall together with it!
—Katarina
“One minute, Teresa!” Katarina’s lips were pursed tightly. “Don’t go out yet.”
“Why, so that the lunch that Chani prepared for us shouldn’t get cold? It is rather a shame about it.”
“When did you last check your gun?”
“A few minutes ago.” The young woman studied her weapon. “It’s fine, but it really is a relic. You couldn’t arrange something better for me, huh? I mean, look where we are now!”
“Don’t be cheeky,” Katarina said. “Helena? Are you ready to go out, or are you also dreaming now about a delicious meal?”
Her second daughter turned slowly away from the window. “To go out where? To help Father?”
“What else?”
“I don’t think there’s any point,” she said with a long sigh, but still, she picked up her gun from the table.
“Why not?”
“Because if whoever it was stole Bernard’s good gun, then we have no chance against him.”
“But Bernard has my gun now. And aside for that, the Jew doesn’t know how to shoot,” her mother noted coldly.
“It’s not something you have to know how to do.”
“Yes, it is,” her mother argued. “And he is still just one person, and Father and Bernard are already facing off with him.”
“Why don’t we take Chani as a hostage in order to frighten him? She and her children—it will be easy.”
“What will that help us? Everyone here is in our hands, and still, Schvirtz is doing what he wants,” she spat. “We are only going to be there for cover—you don’t have to worry.”
“I think that we do need to worry. The fact is, you sent that fax to that snob, Hans Kafnika. If you wouldn’t be afraid of things getting worse, you wouldn’t have done that.”
“Helena, please! So, what’s with your gun?”
“And you also wouldn’t be asking me what’s with my gun. Here it is, but it’s empty. Maybe there are bullets upstairs, if Schvirtz didn’t take those too.”
“What are we going to do with bullets for a revolver, when he has our best Beretta?”
“The Glocks that you and Father have are better,” Teresa offered her opinion.
“The problem is…” Her mother sent a dark look toward the window. “I’m not sure that Father’s gun is loaded. Just before this all started, he told me that he has to load his gun, and then Bernard began to holler, and Father ran outside.”
“But Bernard took your Glock!” Helena said accusingly. “So you aren’t armed either!”
“That’s right.”
“So we’re going to confront a group of more than one hundred people empty-handed?”
“Why a group? It’s only Schvirtz! Sol Sherer works for us, and he claims that lots of his people say that Schvirtz needs to be caught and eliminated. Not that I believe the word of a Jew… But we’re going out,” she raised her voice sharply, “and we’re going now! Helena, you don’t want me to decide that your unwillingness is also a form of rebellion, do you? Because I will deal with it very severely.”
“How?” her daughter asked cynically, but at the same time, she hurriedly headed for the stairs. “Okay, okay, I’ll get some bullets.”
“Good,” her mother said in an icy tone, and grasped her second daughter’s arm. “Come, Teresa, we’re going out there. Helena—for your own good, hurry up and follow us.”
Helena wondered for a moment if she should peek into the kitchen to see if Chani had listened to them, but she decided not to. It was a needless effort. She went up to the third floor, studying the soot that covered the floor at certain points. There was no doubt about it: The Jewish youth had come in and out through the chimney.
The one box in the closet was full of all the old pistols— useless, the whole lot—while the other box had disappeared. Wonderful, just wonderful. So she had no bullets. That was also the fault of Laos Olendorf and Hans Kafnika, who did not meet their commitments, and only enjoyed the benefits of being involved.
She went downstairs, pondering if she should obey her mother
and go out to fight against the Jews of the camp. A loud peal stopped her on the last step, and she turned her head to the square screen of their alarm system, on the side of the room. Who was it—Hans? It didn’t make sense that he had come just a few minutes after he got her mother’s warning letter… Unless he had already decided to set out a few hours ago. The screen was off, and Helena ran and switched it on. Blackwhite-gray lines filled the screen, and after a too-long moment passed, it cleared, displaying six frames. In three of them— facing the northern side—everything looked normal. On the last three, she could see the trees and the old, potholed road, and a large, light-colored van driving along it. Was that Kafnika’s vehicle?
After a moment, the van disappeared from two pictures and appeared in a different one, from a different angle. No, it did not belong to Austria’s deputy police minister, nor to any of the other people in on the secret. It was getting closer, and she could see the driver’s bearded face. He didn’t continue toward the gate of the estate. Instead, he stopped about five hundred meters ahead of it. In horror, she watched people getting out of the van, all of them wearing work overalls and baseball caps. Her sharp eyes noticed immediately that at least one of them was armed. She had no idea who this group of workers actually were, but it didn’t look good.
Where was Father? Busy with the fight with Schvirtz and his supporters? Because his two-way radio was also supposed to be buzzing now, in light of these uninvited guests, and he should have activated the siren that sent all the workers scurrying to their hiding places.
An inner voice whispered to Helena that this time, some of the Jews would not be obeying the order so fast, and perhaps that was also why Father was not taking any action. But where was Bernard? Where were Mother and Teresa? She glanced quickly toward the screen and saw a few of the overallwearers carrying four long ladders, marching among the trees southward. Three of them placed a measuring device of some type on the old road, and one—with a clearly Slavic appearance—walked toward the north, to the path that led to the gate of the estate.
Maybe Mother had convinced herself that there was still something to do, but in Helena’s opinion, the game was up.
“She said that their cemetery is in the south, so we decided to head there,” Bentzy’s father said as he studied the wall. “A cemetery is a deserted place, and from there, we’ll try to get a look inside. The minute Shmulik and Boaz have something to update, they’ll let us know.”
“And meanwhile, we can climb up,” said Eliyahu Golomb, one of Bentzy’s friends, as he opened a ladder. The other ladders were quickly opened along the southern wall.
What was that noise in the distance? A gunshot?
But he was totally alive, and so were all those around him. Josef hadn’t shot. He was still standing across from them, in the same position, wearing his mocking smile and looking very pleased at how the work was being done for him.
“Leave me alone!” Binyamin tried to shake the grip off his hand.

“And believe, Yidden, believe! It’s all deception—just open your eyes! Why do you think we have to hide every time strangers come here? Not so the Nazis shouldn’t see us, but so that good people shouldn’t see us. We are not being hidden here by the compassion of these people. We are their prisoners! We are prisoners to their lies!”
“Don’t force us to use force, boy,” Sol Sherer said in a pleasant voice. “I don’t want to pull that thing out of your hand—something terrible might happen. Put it on the ground, Schvirtz, and submit yourself to reality. The time has come.”
“But this is not the reality!” he screamed, tears filling his eyes. He didn’t see Wangel smiling calmly, nor any of the other faces that surrounded him. “The reality is different, and you are the ones denying it. Is there not a single person here who believes me and is ready to do anything to get out of this place?!”
A few voices responded to him, amidst a babble of voices.
“Don’t force us to use—” Sol repeated in a monotonous tone, grabbing Binyamin’s second hand, but someone cut him off.
“Don’t force us to use force, Sol.” David Elkovitz’s hand grabbed Sol’s arm. “Let go of Binyamin.”
“I won’t.” Sol pressed his lips together, and Wangel continued smiling smugly. “And keep a distance, David, okay? You’re already too involved in this whole thing, and I have no idea what we’re going to do with you when this story is over. Meanwhile, I’m asking you to be as decent as you can.”
“I will not keep a distance.” Elkovitz’s voice was restrained. “Get it into your head already that Josef Wangel has no weapons, and there’s no need to be afraid of him. We just have to think about what to do with Katarina and Bernard. Stop wasting time for all of us! Have they promised you something for cooperation, or is it only because you don’t know what Binyamin and I know, and you think it will be good for everyone to stay in this musty,
moldy hole in the wall forever?”
Binyamin’s back was to the matzeivos and the wall behind him, and Sol didn’t allow him to move. But he suddenly saw that people were fixing their gazes somewhere above him. Some of the people looked panicked, and they suddenly ran the other way, toward the kennels, but others were very focused on whatever it was they were seeing. What was going on there?
“It’s true, Yidden!” someone yelled from behind him. Wait, that voice was familiar!
Binyamin choked up. Hanter! It had to be him!
“Don’t stay in this hole! You’ve been tricked! We are also Yidden, and we’ve come to get you out of here!”
“Hide, hide, it’s a trap!” one panicked woman shrieked. “They’re not even Jews!”
From the direction of the wall, someone began to sing Yossele Rosenblatt’s Shir Hama’alos, and the familiar voice called, “It’s not a trap. We’re good Jews. Is the gun that goy is holding fake? Are you sure? And where is Binyamin Schvirtz?”
B’shuv Hashem es shivas Tzion…
“I’m here!” Binyamin called, without turning around. He could sense Sol’s utter shock by the fact that the fingers clenching his arm loosened somewhat, and just a moment later, Binyamin was able to wrench his arm out of his grasp.
But then he noticed a figure running right toward them, and he heard shouts of fright. Taking advantage of the moment, Josef Wangel had leaped in their direction, with revenge in his eyes. His weapon wasn’t active; that was why he wasn’t shooting. But he was about to grab this gun, and he would quite possibly succeed!
The gap of five meters between them was shrinking with every passing second; Binyamin had no time to rethink things. With his hand that held the gun that was partially being clutched by Sol’s fingers, he pulled the trigger.

RECAP: Zeesy’s friend invites her to start volunteering. Rivky is kicked out of daycamp. Malky goes up to her mother’s bungalow with the kids. Rivky goes missing.
Malky looked up from her Tehillim and sat up straight in the porch chair. The head of the Chaveirim volunteers and the head of the police department were approaching.
“Okay, so we have search parties all over the wooded areas nearby. Hopefully it won’t take too long to find her.”
“Thank you so much, officer,” Layala said, seeing that Malky was too nervous to form a coherent response.
Robotically, Malky called Shulem with the update. She wished he would just be there already, as unrealistic as it was. He had left the city just minutes after she had realized Rivky was missing, but it would still be some time until he would arrive.
The minutes crept by slowly, marked by hushed whispers, murmured Tehillim, some cricket chirps, and walkie talkie beeps from nearby chaveirim members. Malky’s heart was thudding in her chest, her mind numb from fear. It was a good thing she was
sitting; her legs felt wobbly, like they would bend and sway beneath her if she would try to stand.
“Here, drink some water,” Layala urged Malky, thirtyfive minutes later. Malky put down her Tehillim and sipped slowly, then methodically crushed the plastic cup left in her hands. A small but gusty breeze ripped through her, and she shivered. Images of Rivkyall alone in the dark, dense forest, eyes frantically darting to and fro, trying to figure out how to get back - floated through her mind. Bile rose up in her throat as terror nearly overwhelmed her, and she was grateful when her mother put a hand on her back and rubbed comfortingly.
They were playing hide and go seek, and Malky had found the best hiding spot. She had clambered up the big stepladder to the top shelf of the giant closet in her mother’s room and huddled up to the side. Hearing a rustling noise, she didn’t dare look down, for fear of being caught, but a minute later, the person was gone – and so was the stepladder. It must have been the
cleaning lady who had come in, not one of her siblings. Now she had no way down. She was stuck on a squishy, dark shelf, the shadows playing tricks on her eyes and convincing her there were animals coming to eat her. Malky screamed and screamed, but it was a while until anyone heard her through the chaos of the hectic household.
“Rivky must be so scared,” she whispered, shuddering. “It’s dark and cold and there are all sorts of scary noises.”
“They’ll find her soon,” her mother attempted to reassure her. “Soon, she’ll be safe and sound, back at home in your loving arms. You’ll smother her with hugs and kisses and she’ll forget this ever happened to her.
Malky twisted her hands nervously. “I know, but—”
Suddenly, yelling was heard over the walkie talkie.
“We found her!” a man’s voice crackled triumphantly through the line.
“Baruch Hashem!” Malky jumped to her feet. “Where is she?” She peered intently at the edge of the woods, as if expecting Rivky to run out any second.
“It will take a few minutes,” the volunteer standing nearby warned her. “First they need to make sure she’s okay, then they’ll bring her back.”
Malky called Shulem to let him know the good news, then waited and waited for Rivky to appear. The seconds ticked by with an agonizing slowness, and she was too restless to do anything except pace back and forth on the small porch.
with a tear-streaked face. Malky bounded down the steps and across the grass, grabbing her little girl into her arms and squeezing her.
Two hours later, after everything calmed down, all the volunteers left, and Rivky was safely ensconced under her covers, Malky went on a quick walk with Shulem, hoping the crisp air would clear her mind from the aftereffects of the drama.
“That was quite a scare,” Shulem said.
“Yes. And the scariest part is that it could happen again!” Malky exclaimed.
Malky’s numb brain was slowly thawing, and her racing thoughts were none too pleasant.
Now that the overwhelming fear was fizzling away, Malky’s numb brain was slowly thawing, and her racing thoughts were none too pleasant.
How am I supposed to raise a child like this? She keeps getting herself into dangerous situations. What can I do to make her behave? Both for her sake and for mine!
Sudden rustling interrupted her thoughts, and she strained her eyes to see the little group emerging from the corner of the woods. Two policemen, three chaverim volunteers, and one tired-looking Rivky
“What do you mean? I should hope she learned her lesson after all this! She definitely didn’t enjoy being lost.”
“I know,” Malky sighed. “But I told her so many times not to go into the woods, or even near the woods. I warned her that it’s very dangerous. But she did it anyway. And I feel like she keeps getting herself into dangerous situations. She just doesn’t listen, instead does whatever she wants. She’s not a toddler anymore. I should not have to watch her every second to make sure she is not getting into major trouble. But apparently, I do!”
Shulem thought for a minute, twirling his peyos absentmindedly. “I think you should speak to her tomorrow morning, when she’s calmed down but the scare is still fresh and real in her mind. Maybe she can’t fully picture the consequences when you warn her about something dangerous. Now that she experienced it…”
“I’ve heard her tell stories before. She had a very vivid imagination. I don’t think that is the issue,” Malky interrupted.
“Either way, I think you should drive home the point that this is what can happen when she doesn’t listen, and she should make sure to always listen from now on so it never happens again.”
***
Wiping sleep from her bleary eyes, Malky shuffled into the kitchen and slid into the seat across from Rivky, who was downing her bowl of Honey Nut Cheerios.
“Good morning, Rivky! Are you feeling a little better?”
YOM TOV SPECIALS
Rivky gave her a confused glance, then went right back to chasing the last few Cheerios with her spoon.
“Rivky, sheifela, remember how you were so scared yesterday when you were lost?”
Rivky slurped the milk left over in her bowl. Malky plowed on. “Mommy told you lots of times not to go near the woods because Mommy didn’t want you to get lost like you did last night. That’s why we always have to listen to what Mommy says.”
Rivky stared at her, wide-eyed, and burst out, “But it wasn’t my fault! It was Tzippy’s fault! She made me get her ball cuz I threw it and it landed right in front of the woods, and then when I tried reaching for it, it rolled further into the woods, and then I tried coming back but I couldn’t find the way out! So I didn’t even do anything wrong! You should tell Tzippy!”
“But Rivky,” Malky was aghast. “You don’t need to listen to Tzippy if she tells you to do something dangerous. She’s not a Mommy.”
“She said I have to, otherwise she won’t play with me anymore, and she has good toys. You should tell her not to tell me things!”
A little back-and-forth with Rivky went nowhere. Rivky stubbornly refused to admit she had done something wrong, no matter how much Malky tried to explain that she was responsible for her own actions. The conversation ended abruptly when Rivky got up and ran outside to play, seemingly oblivious to the fact that Malky had been mid-sentence, talking directly to her.
“What should I do with her, Ma?” Malky moaned. “Is this normal? She does something so dangerous, and totally refuses to acknowledge that she did something wrong! How can I make sure it won’t happen again? Or that something else won’t happen? How can I get her to listen to me? How am I supposed to make sure she stays safe? She’s not a baby, she’s not a toddler, she’s six years old! Shouldn’t she be able to take some sort of responsibility for her own actions at this age?”
Layala, flipping a sizzling pancake out of the frying pan, stayed silent. She had nothing to say. She was also concerned about Rivky’s troubling behavior.
Family Hose Center Extended Hours
Bridging the Gap Between Parents and Teens.
TURNING SHABBOS TENSION INTO CONNECTION
SHIFRA FRIED
You picture a warm Shabbos table—candles glowing, zemiros and divrei Torah filling the room, everyone laughing and talking together.
Instead, it sometimes feels more like a battlefield: siblings bickering, kids disappearing the second the food is served, parents feeling deflated that what should be bonding time turns into tension.
Shabbos is supposed to be the heartbeat of the Jewish home—it is central to all that we hold dear in Yiddishkeit and in our family life. But the gap between what we dream of and what actually happens can feel so painful.
Take Shani, for example.
She’s a devoted mother who loves Shabbos. She poured herself into the preparations— hours of cooking, setting a beautiful table, making sure every detail was just right. But by Friday afternoon, she was frazzled and worn thin. Her kids weren’t helping as much as she wanted, so her words came out sharp and clipped.
Instead of anticipating Shabbos with joy, her children began to dread it. To them, Shabbos meant tension, orders, and conflict.
Shani was heartbroken. What was most precious to her—Shabbos itself—was the very thing pushing her children away. She admitted she had been hoping it would get better on its own, but it only got worse. The hardest part? Knowing those negative feelings were
sinking into her children’s hearts, shaping their view of Shabbos in ways they wouldn’t even realize—and might carry with them for years.
That realization was heavy.
But there was hope.
Together, we began working on small shifts— ways to invite her teens into Shabbos instead of pushing them. It didn’t transform things overnight, but slowly the atmosphere began to soften.
Here’s one strategy that helped Shani take the first step:
Shift from pressure to appreciation.
Instead of focusing on what her kids weren’t doing, she noticed the little things they did.
“Thanks for sweeping the floor—I feel calmer when my surroundings are neat and clean.”
At the table, she pointed out their contributions: “I love how you got us laughing,” or “That was such an interesting point you raised.”
It seemed simple, but it changed everything. Her kids felt seen, the tension eased, and the table slowly became lighter, warmer, more inviting.

APPLE HONEY GLAZED
CORNED BEEF
This recipe came out absolutely delicious. I was nervous to prepare a corned beef recipe for Yom Tov. It’s not everyone’s favorite choice of meat and with that reputation, I was taking a gamble. Needless to say, this was a huge hit with my taste testers. The glaze is absolutely delicious, with the perfect amount of sweet, savory and tiny hint of spice.
Ingredients:
3 1/2-4 lb corn beef
1 1/2 cups apple cider
3/4 cup honey
5 teaspoons of Dijon mustard
1 teaspoon kosher salt
3 cloves of garlic, minced
2 tablespoons +1 teaspoon lemon juice
1 teaspoon soy sauce
3 tablespoons barbecue sauce
Salt and pepper to taste
Directions:
1. Rinse corned beef well under cold water. Place in a large pot and cover with water.
2. Bring to a boil and cook for 30 minutes. Rinse well and refill with water. Repeat process once more. After rinsing a second time, simmer for 2 hours, until fork tender.
3. In the meantime, combine all sauce ingredients in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil. Lower flame and simmer for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
4. Preheat oven to 400°.
5. Once corned beef is fork tender, drain and place in a 9x13. Pour sauce over it.
6. Bake for 20 minutes, basting halfway.
7. Cool and slice.

COOKIE RECIPE:
2 sticks margarine
1 ½ cups sugar
1 tbs vanilla sugar
2 eggs
3 ½ cups good quality flour
½ tsp salt
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
Cream marg, sugar and vanilla sugar on high speed. Add eggs. Reduce speed. Add salt and slowly add the flour.
Roll out dough and use cookie cutters to create your shapes.
Bake for 9-11 minutes.
Cookies should be a light yellow color, not brown.
ROYAL ICING RECIPE:
3 egg whites
1 lb confection sugar
Few drops of water
Beat egg whites with electric beaters until stiff. Reduce Speed. Slowly add confection sugar while mixing on low speed. Add a few drops of water. Combine.
You now have icing which is a thick consistency. This is good for outlining, writing, or adding any details on top of your cookie. For the cookie backgrounds or areas that need to be smooth, you need flood consistency. You do this by adding a few drops of water until you reach a smooth consistency.
Divide icing into separate bowls and add food coloring or gel as needed. You are now ready to fill piping bags!
