½ tsp baking soda

½ tsp salt

2 ½ cups flour

2 bars dairy chocolate, chopped

Cheese Frosting:

1 stick butter, softened

½ cup confection sugar

1 (8 oz) whipped cream cheese

Garnish:

Caramel cream

Mini marshmallows

Chopped dairy chocolate

Melted chocolate, for drizzling

1. Preheat oven to 350°. Grease a baking sheet.

2. Prepare the cookie base: Combine all ingredients, except flour and chocolate, in a large bowl. Mix well, either with an electric mixer or by hand. Knead in the flour, then mix in the chopped chocolate.

3. Spread evenly onto the baking sheet, using wet hands if necessary. Bake 20-25 minutes. Remove from oven and let cool completely. Trim the edges and cut into bars.

4. Prepare the cheese frosting: Beat butter until fluffy. Add sugar and cream cheese and beat to combine. Fill a piping bag with the mixture. Pipe large dollops of frosting randomly over the bars.

5. Fill the space between the cheese frosting with caramel cream, mini marshmallows, chopped chocolate and any other desired toppings. Drizzle with melted chocolate.

Recap: Ahuva meets her new principal to prepare her for the upcoming school year in Bnos Batsheva. Faigy has a hard time falling asleep and confides in Tehilla late at night. When she is late for teaching the next morning, Chava agrees to substitute for her niece.

CHAPTER THIRTEEN:

The whole thing was surreal. The last time Chava had stepped foot into a classroom was when she graduated high school. It was like walking into a parallel universe. Mrs. Stewart, having received heads up from Faigy a mere fifteen minutes ago, eyed Chava warily as she limped into her office.

Chava had long learned to put up with the stares that her handicap garnered, but for some reason, she felt a pinch at Mrs. Stewart’s cold reception. Yes, she was handicapped, but shouldn’t a principal, more than anyone else in the world, realize that outward appearances were in no way a reflection of what is going on inside?

Despite Mrs. Stewart’s obvious discomfort, she had no choice but to slowly lead Chava to the classroom that was now filled with the noise of sixth graders without a teacher.

“Good Luck,” Mrs. Stewart glanced at her phone and nodded as she clicked down the hallway, leaving Chava to walk in alone. Chava eyed the classroom door nervously. Should she just walk in and introduce herself? She gingerly pushed the door open with her good hand, but before she could think of what to do next, the door was flung open by a redcheeked sixth grader.

“Are you the substitute?” At Chava’s nod, she bounced up and announced, “Guys, we have a sub!”

Chava surveyed the messy scene. There was a cluster of girls huddled over something in the corner, one girl sitting on the floor, one with her head down on her desk, and the rest were milling about the room like they had nothing better to do. Snapping back to the present, she shut the light the way she suddenly remembered her sixth grade teacher doing.
