To qualify for no-cost listings a scholarship listed must be made available to UAA students to further their collegiate education and must meet both of the following criteria:

1. Specifically aviation related.

2. Available to assist students pursuing a degree in aviation at any member college or university of their choosing.

We do not distribute general scholarship opportunities that are not aviation specific (such as photography, dog owners, or pageants), and we do not list or distribute scholarships specific to non-collegiate aviation (general aviation). Nor do we publish scholarships requiring admission to a single college or university as an award criteria. Georgraphic residence, veteran status, gender, minority, or other applicant specific criteria are permitted.

Introduction

The University Aviation Association (UAA) is a nonprofit organization that represents colleges and universities that offer academic degree programs in aviation at both the undergraduate and graduate level.

The purpose of this publication is to consolidate the publicly available information concerning collegiate aviation scholarships in one document. It is expected that the university aviation student, students’ parents, and faculty members, as well as prospective students and their parents, will find the information in this catalog useful.

In all, this publication describes how to obtain applications for over 200+ collegiate aviation scholarship awards with a total value of over one million dollars.

In order to ensure accuracy of the data, extensive cross checking was performed with online sources. We cannot guarantee the accuracy of all scholarships though every attempt is made to update each scholarship every year. Four (4) Entry level Corporate Jet aircraft training Scholarships Awarded

Description

CAE, a worldwide leader in training for the civil aviation, defense and security and health care markets, will award up to four entry level corporate jet aircraft training scholarships in 2022. These scholarships will be awarded to four different students from, or recent graduates of, University Aviation Association member institutions. The aims of the scholarship are to: 1) Provide additional industry-based training opportunities for university aviation students. 2) To broaden the awareness of corporate aviation career paths among university aviation students. The scholarship will include initial training in an entry-level corporate jet (the type of aircraft subject to schedule availability) resulting in a type rating upon successful completion of the course. The applicant is responsible for all travel and housing related costs during the training.

Scholarship Criteria

Applicants must be candidates for, or have received an aviation-related Baccalaureate Degree from a University Aviation Association member institution. Current students must graduate no later than May 2023, or must have graduated with a Baccalaureate Degree not more than two years before May 2023. Applicants must have a minimum of 2.50 on a 4.0 scale overall cumulative grade point average. Applicants must possess a current 1st class medical, Commercial Pilot License with a multi-engine and instrument rating, and a Certified Flight Instructor rating with an instrument airplane endorsement. Applicants must have flown a minimum of 50 hours PIC or SIC within the previous 12 months. Applicants must have a minimum of 50 hours of multi-engine time. Applicants must be available for training during June, July, or August 2022 and must pay for their travel to CAE at DFW Airport, Texas, or another CAE facility, as needed. Recipients of this scholarship will be trained together as a crew of two on any entry-level corporate jet. Applicants must demonstrate an interest in corporate or business aviation by writing a 250-word essay on how this scholarship will fit into their plans to enter corporate/business aviation. This essay must demonstrate how the applicant will use the CAE SimuFlite Scholarship to pursue a flight-related career.

Description

The DeVore Freedom of Flight Scholarship offers college students an opportunity for initial flight training at schools with FAA Part 141 flight schools.

The Freedom of Flight Scholarship was established to honor Dr. DeVore for his contributions to aviation at the local and national levels. His interests have been in promoting aviation education for our youth and providing them with opportunities to enter into dynamic and rewarding careers in aviation. In September 2001, Dr. DeVore completed a solo flight in a single-engine aircraft that circumnavigated the contiguous 48 states; landing at 40 airports in 36 states to promote aviation scholarships.

Scholarship Criteria

Open to students entering as an undergraduate students in a collegiate aviation program; a Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, Senior, or graduate program. Must be admitted, and must be enrolled at the time the award is dispersed, to a University Aviation Association member institution with a Part 141 approved program. Community college and university applicants are encouraged to apply. Applicants must be admitted to, and undertaking, an aviation-related major. A minimum of 3.0 overall GPA on a 4.0 GPA scale. Submit an essay, 250–750 words, demonstrating a love of aviation and a commitment to flight training. Extracurricular involvement/community involvement may be considered. A recommendation letter from a faculty member from a UAA member institution supporting the candidate’s application for this scholarship. Students entering a collegiate Part 141 program as a Freshman may use recommendation letters from other sources.

The University Aviation Association annually awards a $500 scholarship to applicant who are enrolled in an aviation-related curriculum at a UAA member college or university, and have achieved sophomore status at the institution. The award will be made to U.S. Citizens without regard to gender, race, religion, or national origin.

Scholarship Criteria

Applicant must be a U.S. citizen. Applicant must be enrolled in and plan to continue a college curriculum leading to a two-year, fouryear, or post-graduate degree in the field of aviation. Proof of enrollment must be provided prior to distribution of award. At the time of application, the applicant must be officially enrolled in a UAA member institution in an aviation-related program. Member must have completed 30 or more credit hours (or the equivalent for Sophomore status) at the UAA institution and must include the institution’s UAA number with the application. No exceptions to this criterion. Credits must have been completed and on your transcript at the time of application. Applicant must have a cumulative undergraduate grade point average of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale. The completed application must be accompanied by a 250-word typed, double-spaced paper on “How Can I Improve Aviation Education.” Please be direct and focused on the topic.

The Frasca family established this scholarship through the University Aviation Association (UAA) in the name of their son, Joseph Frasca. Joseph excelled as an undergraduate aviation student earning a reputation as a dedicated and competent scholar. His tireless efforts to promote and support aviation resulted in significant worldwide contributions to the industry and his abilities as an aerobatic pilot and ambassador of aviation provided many hours of enjoyment to thousands of people. He was indefatigable in reaching the highest standards of performance and achievement in every challenge he faced.

Aim of Scholarship

The Joseph Frasca Excellence in Aviation Scholarship was established through the University Aviation Association to encourage others to reach the highest level of achievement in their aviation studies and awards $2,000. It is bestowed upon those who demonstrate a commitment and devotion to aviation in the tradition of Joseph Frasca.

Scholarship Criteria

Evidence of excellence in activities, studies, events, organizations, etc., related to aviation. Minimum of a 3.0 overall grade point average. FAA certification/qualifications in either aviation maintenance or flight. Involvement in aviation activities, projects, events, etc.; which will demonstrate an interest and an enthusiasm for aviation. Must be a junior or senior, and currently enrolled in a University Aviation Association (UAA) member institution. Completed application form, essay, and letter of reference, required.

Students are eligible to apply if they, their spouse, or their parent/guardian is an active A.A.E AND a member of the the AAAE Regional Chapter. Under this program, “children” are defined as natural or legally adopted children, stepchildren, and legal wards supported wholly by the guardian, who is an active AAE member. A.A.E.s must be full-time employees of a public-use airport at the time of application. Recipients must be enrolled or planning to enroll in a full-time course load at an accredited two- or four-year college/university or vocational/technical, in any course of study. If the applicant is the eligible A.A.E. or the spouse of an eligible A.A.E., they may be enrolled in a part-time course load. All awards are non-renewable, but applicants may reapply each year as long as they continue to meet the eligibility criteria.

The Rene Matos Memorial Scholarship was established in the name of a very motivated and dedicated man, who epitomized the dream to succeed, while helping others along the way. Even from his humble beginnings as an air traffic controller in Puerto Rico, Rene displayed a talent and personality that could not be contained there. While he was in Puerto Rico, Matos never curbed his desire to advance in his career. Already gifted in what he did as a controller, Rene wanted to do more; not only for his own career, but for other Hispanics as well. He educated himself and eventually moved up in the ranks as a top manager at the William J. Hughes Technical Center in New Jersey. It was Rene’s drive, diligence, and determination that earned him that position.

Scholarship Criteria

A student does not need to be a member of the Vertical Flight Society, but we encourage you to explore the many benefits student membership can provide. High school students are not eligible. At the time of application (February 2022) applicants must be enrolled as a full-time student in a relevant engineering degree program at an accredited university. Technical disciplines relevant to complex aeronautics engineering or aviation systems, even if not considered, vertical lift engineering will receive equal consideration. A student can receive an award once an Undergraduate, once a Master’s student, and once a Graduate student. In order to qualify for consideration of the scholarship, an applicant must demonstrate a detailed interest and appreciation on the importance of affordability and how it might be improved within the Vertical Flight community. Nancy Miller Livingston Stratford flew 50 different aircraft in World War II and went on to accumulate some 8,500 hours. Don and Carol Bedford were a team. Don had earned his Airframe and Power License and was well on the way to a degree in aeronautical engineering, when he felt impelled to join the workforce at Lockheed Aircraft at the outbreak of WWII. Don later joined the Army Air Corps where he eventually joined the Aviation Cadet program. He was transitioning to fighters when the war ended. He returned to Lockheed where he rubbed shoulders with the likes of Tony LeVere, Howard Hughes, and worked on the P-80 program. In 1947, Don took a job with Alaska Coastal Airlines in Juneau. He stayed through a series of mergers, to retire from Alaska Airlines in 1993. Carol was from the Chicago area where she attended business school. She traveled to Alaska on a whim, and took a job at Alaska Airlines where the two met. Don was one of the first authorized inspectors in Southeast Alaska, an area where he remained active throughout the rest of his life.

This program was made possible by a bequest from Mrs. Elizabeth L. Lindsay, widow of Lieutenant Colonel John Lindsay, a career Air Force officer stationed at Craig AFB in Selma, Alabama. The scholarship is in memory of their children John C. and Blanche Lee Lindsay who also passed away before Lt Col and Mrs. Lindsay. The scholarship was established for children of members of the United States Air Force who are pursuing a college degree.

A minimum of one scholarship in the amount of $2,500 will be awarded annually. Additional scholarships may be considered and awarded, funds permitting. Applicants who are awarded a scholarship are not eligible for a second award.

Scholarship Criteria

Parent or legal guardian of the applicant must be Active Duty, veteran, or retired service members, reservists, or National Guard members of the United States Air Force. Applicant must: Be pursuing a degree at an accredited college or university; Provide a Statement of Purpose describing how the scholarship will assist in meeting their educational goals; Provide the most current transcript or, if not yet enrolled, proof of acceptance into an accredited college or university; Provide one letter of recommendation from a teacher, professor, counselor, or work/volunteer supervisor. The scholarship will be awarded to a student who has graduated from high school in 2022, and who is entering their first year at an accredited university. Once the recipient is selected, the Air Force Association will notify them with a congratulatory email. The recipient’s college or university will receive the check, which can be used for any education related expense.

An essay no greater than 600 words (approx. two pages typed and double spaced) describing your academic achievements and goals. Additionally, state how this scholarship will help you achieve those goals. Scholarship Criteria

The applicant must be a spouse of Air Force Active Duty, Air National Guard, Air Force Reserve, Space Force, or Department of the Air Force Civilian employee to be eligible. James, a 16,000-hour helicopter and fixed-wing pilot, started his aviation career in the U.S Army. He was a decorated military veteran with a Purple Heart, a Silver Star, a Bronze Star, and multiple air medals for his combat duty. In his civilian career, he flew offshore transport, search and rescue, and air ambulance. He was an advanced flight instructor, Designated Pilot Examiner, and also served as HAI’s Chairman of the Board of Directors. James was an advocate for aviation safety, a teacher, a mentor and avid supporter of the Whirly-Girls.

Scholarship Criteria

The applicant must be a helicopter pilot with at least a Private Certificate/License. She must be a member in good standing at the time of application submission, award of scholarship, and during scholarship training, she must be an active member, current on their annual dues.

Description

Nancy Miller Livingston Stratford flew 50 different aircraft in World War II and went on to accumulate some 8,500 hours in 103 different types. At 23, she was one of the first American women to become a ferry pilot for the British Air Transport Auxiliary. After WWii, Nancy earned her seaplane and helicopter wings, and owned Livingston Helicopters in Alaska. She is the second licensed woman commercial helicopter pilot in the USA and fourth in the world. Her memoir, “Contact! Britain: A woman ferry pilot’s story during WWII in England!” published in 2011. This year she celebrated her 99th birthday and the San Diego 99s honor her with this scholarship.

Scholarship Criteria

Applicant must: Be a female; Reside in San Diego County; Have a current student medical for PPL award; and A passing score on written test OR completed a solo flight. Funds may be used to help fund Private Pilot training. There is a 90-day limit to apply funds towards training.

The Northwest Section Scholarship fund was created in 2013 from funds that the Section held in investment accounts. The scholarship is awarded annually for $1,000 or the amount requested, whichever is less. Examples are flight review, emergency maneuver training, ground school, components of student pilot training, floatplane rating, instrument proficiency check, or tailwheel instruction. Scholarship monies can be applied toward aviation expenses greater than $1,000, such as an additional rating or course of study, if the applicant clearly states there are sufficient funds from other sources to complete her training.

Sponsored by Robinson Helicopter Company (RHC), this scholarship provides a Whirly-Girl currently flying Robinsons the opportunity to attend the R66 Safety Course and build R66 time. RHC provides this 3.5-day course in Torrance, CA, USA; which includes an hour of flight with a safety instructor, and sponsors an additional 4 hours of R66 flight time (5 hours total R66 flight time). The course includes 3.5_days of classroom instruction in the following subject areas: accident review, causes of fatal accidents, awareness training, SFAR 73, Pilot’s Operating Handbook (POH) review, R66 systems, and the Rolls Royce engine. One day is devoted to maintenance, pre-flight inspections, and flying with an experienced RHC safety pilot. A tour of the Robinson Factory is also included. The course is open to any rated helicopter pilot who has at least 3 hours in any type of Robinson helicopter model, one hour of which was flown within 30 days prior to attending the course. A Robinson safety course is required by most insurance companies and serves as a CFI refresher. The applicant must be a helicopter pilot with at least a private certificate/license. She must be a member in good standing at the time of application.
