invented another form of “cat-fishing” where I would take a fishing rod and tie to it a crumpled piece of newspaper. The cats would attack the dangling paper as I let them run with it or pulled them in as I would a fish. If I wanted to set a fishing trap, I would need a boat which I did not have. So instead I used an inflatable pink inner tube. (It worked until it didn’t, when a slight puncture sunk my oh-so-fabulous Titanic.) Although I enjoy my life in the US, Russia will always be a second home. Its different and sometimes uncomfortable lifestyle has given me a new perspective, bringing me closer to my family and the culture of previous generations. A part of me will always be like the chernozem, in its dark richness, holding the histories and experiences that have grown into me.
