Players struggling on the course The Cobar Men’s Golf summer competition scores over the past six weeks show all players have been struggling with the lush conditions of the golf course and the lack of sand on the greens. The plan is to replace the sand on the greens before the start of the golf season at the beginning of March. Last Wednesday’s Stableford competition only attracted a small field of five players with Peter ‘China’ Brien finishing as the winner on 29 stableford points. Greg Clark, with 28 stableford points, was second on a countback with Max Phillips finishing third. Nearest to the Pin prizes were won by Clark on the 3rd hole and Brien on the 7th and 8th holes. Saturday’s Stableford competition attracted 14 golfers. All players got through nine holes before the weather closed in. After consulting with golf’s expert weathermen, Peter ‘Ding’ Lawrence and Bian Smith, they advised the rain would blow over, but five minutes later everybody was soaked. Needless to say, play was abandoned. At the Men’s Golf annual general meeting on Saturday afternoon Alec Fraser was returned unopposed as Captain. Peter Brien was returned as Vice Captain, John Martin as Secretary/Treasurer and Bill Fugar was also returned as Handicapper. This week’s competitions on today, Saturday and Sunday, all have a 9am start.—Three Aces
