Gutters overflow in Saturday’s storm

Cobar’s streets were running and gutters overflowing on Saturday afternoon after the town received a dump of 10.4mm of rain, along with some hail.

This brings Cobar’s total rainfall so far this month to 52.4mm.

Daytime temperatures over the past week have been varied with Wednesday recording the hottest day when the mercury climbed to a maximum of 39.4 while Thursday’s top was 28 degrees.

Friday reached 32.4 degrees before the rain on Saturday cooled things down and the thermometer dipped to 26.6 while Sunday was also mild with a top of 27.7.

Tomorrow is looking to be a warm one for Australia Day celebrations with an expected top of 38, with a slight chance of showers and a possible thunderstorm in the afternoon/evening.

Friday and Saturday should also be very warm with both days expected to reach maximums of 38 degrees.

In the running for the Community Event of the Year are: Running on Empty Festival 2022, Cobar Christmas Street Parade, Cobar Show, Cobar Miners Race Club, Cobar Rodeo, Cobar Netball Country Cup, Cobar Grey Mardi Gras, Copper City Dance Centre Dance Concert and the Cobar Bowling & Golf Club’s New Year’s Eve event.

There were four nominations for the Environmental Sustainability Award, with Cobar High School receiving two nominations for two environmental projects at the school along with Brendon Monckton and the Cobar Girl Guides and Rotary recycling initiative.

While lots of congratulatory messages have been written on social media about this year’s nominees, others have criticized that some well-deserving locals have been left off the list!

The Australia Day Awards process works by nomination if someone isn’t nominated, then their achievements/efforts can’t be judged by the judging panel.
