Yabbies Life Membership
After 19 years of service to the Cobar Yabbies Senior Men’s Swimming Club, John Carswell was honoured with Life Membership at the club’s presentations at the Cobar Bowling & Golf Club on Friday. Carswell joined the club in 2004 and, in addition to serving as the club’s handicapper in 2013 and 2014, has been the club’s president since 2014. He holds the club’s record of attending the most Western Districts, National carnival and annual Five Ways Swims since joining the club. Carswell (at left) was congratulated by Cobar Yabbies’ secretary and founding member Bob Clark and Western Districts president Bill Fugar.
Men’s, women and mixed teams all compete together A Three-Ball-Best-Ball Stableford competition was contested on Saturday with men, women and mixed teams of golfers all playing together at the same time. The day was sponsored by Cobar Miners Race Club with 24 players all up (13 men and 11 women) taking part. Two teams finished with 45 points including the mixed team of Peter ‘China’ Brien, Geoff Dunne and Sue-Ellen Dunne along with a Ladies team of Fran Samios, Daphne Cross and Glenda Peebles. The best individual ladies’ scores on the day were recorded by Fran Samios and Sally Bannister with 37 points. Samios claimed the win after a count-back. In the men’s competition, the winner was ‘China’ (who always plays above himself when the ladies are around) with 39 points. Steve Manns was next best and a whole postcode away on 35. Nearest the Pin prizes were won by Greg Clark on the 3rd hole, Sally Bannister won the 7th and 8th holes, Karen Henry collected the prize on the 11th and Julie Livingston won the 15th. The Men’s Golf Monthly Medal day on Sunday only had nine players turn up. The best score was recorded by John Martin with 34 points (17 and 17). Martin is acknowledged as one of Cobar’s most accomplished “skins” players, but he is also a very versatile golfer who can turn his clubs to any format. John Collins had 32 points and Chris Powell finished with 31 for second and third places respectively. They both had a good back nine (18 points each), but struggled on the front and blew-up when the pressure was on. There was not one Nearest the Pin shot recorded! A Par event will be played on Saturday and an individual Stableford on Sunday. There is a lot of activity this weekend, with some golfers making the annual pilgrimage to Wanaaring for their Open.—Out of Bounds
