Allendale

A Picture of Quiet Suburban Living

A mix of well-kept farmhouses and colonials, the borough of Allendale is a picture of quiet suburbs. This oasis in Bergen blends a mixture of tree-lined neighborhoods, expansive municipal parks and a bustling downtown to create a vibrant community. Focal points include the Celery Farm, which consists of more than 107 acres of preserve and is one of the most unique bird sanctuaries in the state, and Crestwood Lake Park, host to a picturesque swim club. The community of Allendale prides itself on having a big heart. Neighborhood involvement is a big part of Allendale and residents take pride in the Allendale Newcomers who welcome new residents and Holiday Observers who bring the community together for town celebrations. Annually, the town hosts a Memorial Day parade and a July Fourth fireworks display. The Main Street area is a picturesque shopping landscape made up mainly of small independent stores and restaurants. Allendale’s public school district serves kindergarten through 8th grade. Hillside School covers kindergarten through 3rd grade and Brookside School serves 4th to 8th graders. High school students in Allendale attend the neighboring Northern Highlands Regional High School alongside Saddle River, Upper Saddle River and Ho-Ho-Kus residents. The prestigious school has been ranked in New Jersey Monthly as one of the Top 25 Public High Schools in New Jersey. Bergen County Technical School is also a secondary school option available to residents. Allendale is a commuter’s dream. Not only is it easily accessible by car via Route 17 and I-287, Allendale also has a centrally located train station. The station provides NJ Transit service on the Main Line and Bergen County Line. Commuters can switch trains at Hoboken’s nearby station to travel into Manhattan. Commuters looking for a direct, car-free route into the city can travel by bus. Coach USA offers round-trip service from Allendale Avenue to Port Authority Bus Terminal in New York City.

The borough was named for Joseph Warner Allen, a surveyor for the Erie Railroad.
