Saddle River - Strawberry, Apple Farms Abound in Scenic Neighborhood

The northern Bergen County borough of Saddle River ranks among the top three wealthiest communities in the county. Broad, flat farmlands interwoven with wooded, rolling hills make it a community filled with strawberry and apple farms. Although many of Saddle River’s old stone farmhouses can still be found in the borough, more modern architectural designs dot the landscape. The town offers quiet suburban living less than 18 miles from the George Washington Bridge.

Preschool through 5th grade children can attend the town’s only public school: Wandell School. The Wandell School is a highly decorated elementary school with a very low teacher to student ratio of 9:1. For middle school, students attend the Eric Smith Middle School as part of the Ramsey Public School District. Once students attending public school reach high school, they have the option to continue at Ramsey High School or attend the Northern Highlands Regional High School. Saddle River Day School is a private school serving grades preK-12.

Saddle River is reached easily via Route 17. Central roadways include East and West Saddle River Road and Allendale Road. Many residents are able to travel to the neighboring Upper Saddle River to catch the Short Line bus into Manhattan.

JUST THE FACTS

Saddle River is bounded by eight municipalities in Bergen County: the boroughs of Allendale, Hillsdale, Ho-Ho-Kus, Ramsey, Upper Saddle River, Waldwick, Washington Township and Woodcliff Lake. It was established in 1894. The borough is named after the Saddle River, which flows through the borough and is a tributary of the Passaic River, which in turn was named for a stream and valley in Saddell, Argyll, Scotland.
