Wyckoff - No Shortage Of Curb Appeal In Semi-Rural Paradise

With the town’s tree-lined streets, sprawling lawns and wide range of home architectural styles, some have ventured to guess the term “curb appeal” may have been coined just for Wyckoff. Tucked on the edge of the Ramapo Mountains, Wyckoff is known as a semi-rural “countrified community,” just a stone’s throw from the hustle and bustle of New York City.

Wyckoff’s residents believe in their town — and with good reason. Volunteers have built a playground and park and even an extension to one of the town’s schools in the past 20 years. Residents are also proud of their heritage, with the Van Voorhees-Quackenbush-Zabriskie House museum taking visitors back to 1730. There are 12 brooks in Wyckoff, and the beautiful James A. McFaul Environmental Center is a natural wonderland within the town’s borders.

Wyckoff public schools are consistently rated among the best in the county. There are four public elementary schools: Abraham Lincoln School, Calvin Coolidge School, George Washington School and Sicomac School. Middle school students attend Dwight D. Eisenhower Middle School. High school students attend the schools of the Ramapo Indian Hills Regional High School District (Indian Hills High School in Oakland and Ramapo High School in Franklin Lakes), shared with students from Franklin Lakes and Oakland.

Wyckoff residents are able to take NJ Transit along the 148 route, which ends at the Port Authority Bus Terminal located in Manhattan. Short Line buses also provide service to the Port Authority from Wyckoff. Local bus service between Hackensack and Oakland is also available.

JUST THE FACTS

Wyckoff borders the municipalities of Allendale, Franklin Lakes, Mahwah, Midland Park, Ridgewood and Waldwick in Bergen County; and both Hawthorne and North Haledon in Passaic County. It was established in 1926. Though there is no solid historical evidence for any of the various theories, the most commonly given origin for the name Wyckoff, which was the origin accepted by the township committee when the municipality was established, is that the name is from the Lenape word wickoff, meaning “high ground,” or that it is from wickok, meaning “water.”
