CHARITY CALLS FOR VOLUNTEERS

Thanks for all your generous donations to Glasgow’s No1 Baby and Family Support Service Christmas Appeal.

The Appeal called Give A Gift, provided a warm jacket, toy or a stocking filler for children and young adults up to the age of 17.

AAC Clydespace embraced the Christmas spirit with their Gifting Tree. Rather than an office Secret Santa staff picked an gift tag from the tree with age and gender information of a young person to buy for.

And our Facilities Management company, Hugh Stirling Ltd spread some Christmas cheer with a kind donation direct to the charity.

“Our referrals doubled with so many people now living in working poverty. This Christmas we delivered thousands of gifts to children and young people as well as warm jackets. Thanks to all that continue to support us. We rely on donations and volunteers and it’s amazing to have Skypark on board that continue to support our Appeals”.

The service runs throughout the year, operating from a dedicated unit on Forge Street. If you or your company can provide volunteers, the charity urgently needs help to support families living in hardship in 2023.

Comedian, writer and broadcaster Sanjeev Kohli is starring in a series of Back To The Office comedy sketches filmed right here at Skypark.

Featuring online and on social media, the observations are a humorous take on returning to office life and what we miss when working from home. They highlight the sense of community, camaraderie and wellbeing that comes from being around others, and our enviable location in trendy Finnieston, home to some of the coolest bars, eateries and coffee shops. As Sanjeev points out though, watch out for those hipster beards… Watch

SUPPORTING GLASGOW UNIVERSITY FUNDRAISING EFFORTS

Community matters to us at Skypark – not only internally by creating a great working environment and business campus but outwards too by doing our bit to help tackle wider societal issues. So this academic year we are sponsoring Glasgow University Charity Fashion Show (GUCFS), the institutions largest student run fundraising society. The fundraising culminates in a two night Fashion Show at Platform in February. This year’s creative theme being ‘Youth’.

Each year GUFS commits to one local organisation to support and this year all funds raised are going to Glasgow and Clyde Rape Crisis, an organisation that works tirelessly to support women and girls who have experienced sexual assault and rape, as well as challenging the systematic and ongoing violence women can face.

A YEAR OF SUCCESS FOR OUR SMART THINGS ACCELERATOR CENTRE (STAC)

Based at Skypark, Scotland’s Internet of Things (IoT) accelerator, Smart Things Accelerator Centre, has marked its first anniversary with a string of senior appointments to its team.

Former Scottish Enter-prise Managing Director and interim CEO Linda Hanna is now in place as STAC’s Head of Partnerships, while Meta VP for Supply Chain Sean Murphy joins a STAC Advisory Board that includes recently appointed Volvo Cars CEO Jim Rowan.

Commenting on Linda Hanna’s appointment, STAC CEO Paul Wilson said: “We want to be in tune with the Scottish Government’s economic and social priorities, through fulfilling the technology require-ments via Scottish innovation and entrepreneurship. There are very clear challenges around energy, climate, sustainability, health, and social care, and IoT plays well into these sectors.”

Commenting on Sean Murphy’s appointment, Wilson added: “With people like Sean and Jim in place on our Advisory Board, we can count on combined experience gained from leadership roles at global brands like

Blackberry, Facebook and Meta, and Volvo Cars. We think this speaks volumes in terms of the powerhouse team we are building at STAC.”

STAC recently secured a partnership with the University of Glasgow, Vrije University Amsterdam, and the Corvinus University of Budapest, aimed at driving entrepreneurial and innovation activity. The partnership is part of the European Union-funded EIT HEI Initiative.

STAC is also working with one of its corporate sponsors, Jordan Talent Solutions, to deliver Scotland’s first ever IoT jobs platform.

Headquartered at Skypark in Glasgow, STAC now has a company cohort of 24, and in July announced a strategic partnership with Scottish Enterprise that delivers continuing financial support to Scotland’s first IoT accelerator.

£ 12,681 RAISED FOR CLYDE CASH FOR KIDS

In October, Clyde 1’s Superscoreboard presenters Gordon Duncan and Gordon Dalziel, teamed up with Skyparkers raising over £12,500.

As part of the fundraising efforts, 13 year old Zoe Mennie from Glasgow donated her pocket money and Carol McMullen of One-O-One raised over £1500 for Clyde Cash for Kids.

With cash raised locally, Clyde Cash for Kids guarantees that the generous donations made by fund raising will go towards bringing hope, healing and happiness to children in the community. It responds to the needs of children and aspires to enable all children to live life to the full and achieve their individual potential.

Gordon Duncan host of Clyde 1’s Superscoreboard team said: “The Skypark zipslide was an amazing experience. Thanks to everyone that supported us. The money raised for Clyde Cash for Kids has a huge, positive impact on the thousands of children the charity supports throughout the year.”

Clyde Cash for Kids supports children and young people affected by poverty, abuse, neglect and those who have additional needs. As a long-standing fundraising partner with Clyde Cash for Kids, Skypark has raised £40,000 over the years for the charity.

SKYPARK WELCOMES HEADSTART NURSERY

Offering quality childcare and pre-school education to children from the ages of 6 weeks up to 5 years, we warmly welcome Headstart to our dedicated on-site nursery facility. Formerly sited at Trinity Church in the Partick area of Glasgow, the popular childcare provider follows 'The Pre-Birth to Three' national guidance and the ‘Curriculum for Excellence’ for 3-5 year olds. They also offer funded childcare for 3-5 year-olds.

The nursery is managed by two fully qualified and well experienced teachers Gillian Robertson and Aileen Watson (as drawn by the nursery’s budding artists). Their dedicated team of early years educators have a particular focus on helping young people understand the world of work, and they would love to connect with businesses across the campus.

A HUGE THANK YOU TO SKYPARK FROM THE PYRAMID AT ANDERSTON!

From donating chocolate Easter eggs earlier this year so the Knit and Natter group could add their lovingly handmade hats, to wrapping and delivering hundreds of selection boxes in time for the ‘Anderston Loves Christmas’ event in December, Skypark continues to develop strong ties with local community hub The Pyramid.

Anderston Loves Christmas was held in conjunction with the Salvation Army and took place on the 9th December. As well as the opportunity to meet Mr and Mrs Claus, families enjoyed festive food and fun. And colleagues from Leidos (pictured above) got into the festive spirit by lending a hand on the day.

The Pyramid supports the local communities of Anderston, Finnieston, Yorkhill and Kelvingrove with activities, events and help for every age group and the charity are looking for Trustees to join their Board.

It’s an exciting time to get involved as Phase One of a large renovation of their iconic building completes in the New Year with the opening of a new state of the art community sports hall and a commercial size community kitchen.

The aim is to provide more community activities which are accessible to all. From chair yoga, tai chi and dementia cafes, to cultural cinema screenings and weaving workshops.

If you have a passion for the local area and are experienced in governance, business management and planning, accounts or finance please get in touch. Estimated time commitment is around 5-6 hours per month, including participation at Board meetings.

If you’re interested and would like to find out more, please contact Chief Officer on: ailsa@thepyramid.scot

GLASGOW SCHOOL PUPILS TAKE ON LEIDOS CHALLENGES!

June was buzzing in Glasgow Science Centre as young people and their teachers and mentors from across Glasgow and Airdrie held their inaugural Education Industry Partnership (EIP) Showcase!

The EIP programme, led by the Scottish Schools Education Research Centre (SSERC) in partnership with Leidos, aims to inspire young people to get engaged in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths) subjects and careers by bringing industry and education together.

Fiona Keady, UK Talent Business Partner and STEM Group Chair for Leidos explained:

As a STEM employer, we want to help reduce STEM skills shortages, increase diversity in STEM, and show that STEM education and careers can be for EVERYONE! We know collaboration is

one of the best ways to achieve this, so we’re excited to partner with SSERC to deliver the EIP programme. This unique opportunity is helping us reach and engage with more young people – not just discussing what Leidos and companies like ours do, but helping them develop valuable STEM skills, empowering them to take ownership of their own STEM path, and helping them build confidence in turn to help others.”

Through the EIP, Leidos volunteers mentor first- and secondyear pupils over a seven-month period to help them complete company challenges, ranging from designing a high school of the future to planning a New Year party in Antarctica. The programme is fully funded, including travel and teacher cover, so there are no financial barriers to schools to take part. Whilst support and guidance is on offer from their Leidos mentors, interestingly no answers are given to the pupils. This encourages them to ask questions, explore options and figure out solutions, as they would do in reality in a workplace. Throughout the programme, the pupils pass their knowledge on to peers and the wider community, helping maximise the impact and reach of the programme. On completion, every pupil earns a Young STEM Leader Award.

Having completed Year 1 of the programme with five groups of young people in June, Year 2 has introduced seven new teams who are now busy working on their chosen challenges with a view to their own showcase in June 2023. Supported schools across the two years have included: Cleveden, Jordanhill, King’s Park, Lochend, Shawlands, St Andrew’s, St Margaret’s and Woodfarm.

ART EXHIBITIONS

It’s been another great year for our donated gallery at Skypark! This year’s highlights are Reset Glasgow, The Royal Photographic Society’s Scottish Annual Exhibition and Kris Kesiak’s Woman@COP26 that is running to February 2023.

THE ROYAL PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY

The Royal Photographic Society opened its Scottish Annual Exhibition 2022. The collection of work by 35 of the Society’s members, captured all walks of life through a lens when travel was limited. Under the banner ‘Photography for Everyone’, The Royal Photographic Society embraces all forms of photographic practice and is open to anyone with an interest in photography.

photography.

RESET GLASGOW

RPS Scotland is the largest geographical regional hub, and has around 600 members stretching from Dumfries to Lerwick, and more or less everywhere inbetween. At the RPS Scotland AGM each year the attendees gather with 4 of their current images, and we have an open forum where we choose a representative set of 40 images which forms the annual travelling exhibition. The exhibition hits the road up to Lerwick, and then crisscrosses the Country through Edinburgh, Glasgow, Inverness, Arbroath, and Sanquhar making it ’ s way back to the AGM where the next 40 images are chosen

Our first exhibition of the year “Reset Glasgow” was shot by photographer and journalist Laura Coventry. During the first lockdown, Laura headed into the city centre of Glasgow in April 2020 to capture the city as it never looked before – empty! It was as if someone had pressed the ‘reset’ button, which inspired Laura’s photography project’s name “Reset Glasgow”.

14
The Royal Photographic Society was founded in 1853 to make the art and science of photography more available, and is now a registered charity, with the mission of bringing inspiration, connectivity, and creativity through photography to people of all ages and backgrounds. There are 16 Regional Hubs in the UK, a world wide network of International chapters, and 16 Special Interest Groups covering all aspects of Blue on Yellow: Alasdair Cochrane FRPS

WOMAN @COP26

Running to February 2023, Kris Kesiak’s exhibition is a collection of portraits that perfectly frame the voices of women to inspire the next generation of girls.

This legacy project spearheaded by Glasgow’s Education Services in partnership with Glasgow Caledonian University and Women of the World Foundation, was created in 2021 where 2,500 young women from Glasgow’s Secondary Schools came together at “#GirlsAtCOP26 – The Solutions are Feminist” at the Glasgow Caledonian University. A panel of experts including former Irish President Dr Mary Robinson, joined the girls to discuss the global issues around UN Sustainable Goal 5, alongside health, environment and gender as well as other challenges that can affect women and girls’ bodies.

Women at COP26 Exhibition, curated by Claire Stewart, photography lecturer at City of Glasgow College, features women from across the globe who joined the school girls, in discussing taking collective action to address the climate emergency from a female perspective.

Glasgow-based photographer Kris Kesiak who documented the events said: “Photographing strong women is something I have been drawn to since I first started taking photographs as a child. In those early years, my sister and grandmother – both formidable women – were often the subjects of my pictures. In my career, I have been lucky enough to work with a wide range of female artists, musicians, writers and models.

“Getting the opportunity to meet, listen to, and photograph such a diverse range of women was a privilege. All were truly inspiring and formidable. I am thrilled to exhibit at Skypark and extend the exhibition to a new audience in documenting the role women are playing in Glasgow and beyond”.

PUPIL SAVES ST PATRICK’S SCHOOL TRIP WITH HELP FROM TEAM SKYPARK

Atrip to Auchengillan Outdoor Centre went ahead thanks to fundraising help from Resonance Capital and Skypark and the ingenuity of a school pupil attending St Patrick’s Primary School in the west end.

Realising that the cost of the trip had risen, Ya Shi a primary 7 pupil at St Patrick’s Primary School, wrote to businesses including Skypark and Resonance Capital, our specialist lettings advisor to ask for fundraising help so as every pupil could attend the trip.

Michael Miley, teacher at St Patrick’s Primary School said: “Our annual trip to Auchengillan Outdoor Centre is an opportunity for primary 7 pupils to enjoy activities, grow in confidence and cement friendships. Unfortunately, with

increased costs it has become much more expensive and became unaffordable. One of our pupils Ya Shi, had the idea of writing to local business to ask for help. Thanks to Angela Higgins of Resonance Capital who donated £2000 which meant a full class of 23 children could take part”.

Skypark’s strategic lettings advisor Angela Higgins of Resonance Capital that also supports many charities said: “Hats off to the letter writing ingenuity of Ya Shi of St Patrick’s Primary School! Taking part at the Auchengillan Outdoor Centre is a wonderful opportunity for children to enjoy great activities. I am delighted that every pupil was included in the trip and hope that everyone had a great experience!”

Businesses at Skypark have been given a unique opportunity to re-design their workplace in a link up with level 3 Interior Design students from the Glasgow School of Art.

The four-week project creatively looks at what staff want from an office space now. Past companies to have taken part include the Scottish Government offices in Edinburgh, The Kimpton Blythswood Square Hotel and The Goethe Institute. All found taking part a beneficial and insightful experience.
