The BCO in Scotland & Skypark: Have your say and join our ‘Campfire Discussion: Rethinking and Reimagining Glasgow’ Wednesday 24th April 2024

This view was echoed by Skypark occupier Richard Scott CEO of award winning company Axis Animation who took part in the panel, alongside Adam Purvis from Dark Matters Laboratories and Alisdair Gunn, Head of Glasgow City Innovation District.

In the first of two events in partnership with the British Council for Offices, we took a deep dive into ‘what kind of workspace is the future for both Glasgow and its next generation’.

In follow up, next year’s ‘Campfire Discussion: Rethinking and Reimagining Glasgow’ will feature a line up of experts including Dr Roddy Yarr and Nicola Cameron of Glasgow University, offering you a chance to air the reality of the issues many of us are dealing with post pandemic. We will explore themes around rethinking and reimagining an exciting, dynamic, productive and ecologically healthy future for Glasgow that includes and engages our young people.

In her first appearance in Scotland, leading a panel discussion in September, at a lunchtime event for BCO members hosted

by Skypark, the new president of the British Council for Offices (BCO) said she does not expect there to be a “mandated” return to pre-pandemic working models which compelled people to attend their place of employment every day.

Despina Katsikakis, an executive partner at global commercial property firm Cushman & Wakefield, said blended models giving people the scope to work from home along with opportunities to interact with colleagues in person will be the future of office life.

All agreed people now want to spend time in “inspiring” places when connecting with colleagues in person. People want to have flexibility in how and when and where they work, but social connection continues to be a significant driver of place.

Following on, next April’s Campfire Discussion will a focus on the human aspects, social interaction, learning, anxiety, the future of mental health and society and how isolation predominates.

GLASGOW CHARITY FASHION SHOW SETS STAGE FOR IMPACT ARTS Get Involved with the Skypark mission to support local University Students in their Big Fundraiser

W

e are not just a business park we are Skypark that goes above and beyond to be at the heart of the wider community.

With a cause close to our hearts, we are delighted to sponsor Glasgow Charity Fashion Show (GCFS) and its charity partner Impact Arts that supports people and communities transforming their lives through art and creativity. GCFS is the institution’s largest student fundraising society and shines a light on the inequalities that so many people live with.

mpact Arts is a charity aiming to make a difference...creatively.

They believe each and every one of us can be creative. They use arts, it all its guises, to help people make positive lasting change in their lives, whether they are 3 or 93 years old.

Their programmes span generations. They work with young people to help increase life prospects and prevent homelessness, and older people to prevent isolation and loneliness and encourage social inclusion. Established in 1994 in Glasgow, the charity now runs projects across Scotland with the help of 50 staff and over 200 freelance artists.

Participation in arts activities helps both mental health and workforce wellbeing. The charity run Creative Wellbeing Workshops, hands on ways for employees to de-stress, re connect and build stronger teams.

Bumper Crop for Headstart Nursery

T

he Nursery’s growing space donated by Skypark, is part of our ongoing investment in sustainability, ecology and biodiversity. With its first growing season completed and preparations underway for the new season, the nursery children have been enjoying an exciting growing garden success.

Gillian Robertson of Headstart nursery said: “Our first season of planting in the garden has been an astonishing success. We have harvested our potatoes (150!), carrots and radishes and are patiently waiting for our cabbages, runner beans and a second crop of potatoes to ripen. We thoroughly enjoyed eating our produce and can highly recommend home made potato scones and carrot and pineapple muffins. Delicious! Our plants have flowered endlessly, encouraging bees and many other bugs. We have also

discovered that ladybirds love petunias. Every day is a school day!”

In preparation for the new season, the nursery is learning about the need for crop rotation and letting soil rest. Gillian continued: “The children are taking great delight in using our wormery (thank you Wade, Skypark’s beekeeper), to produce fertiliser to enrich the soil. Three times a week they feed the worms our snack scraps, weighing it out carefully to ensure we don’t over feed them. Once a week they take worm juice from the wormery and dilute it before watering the growing areas. All great measuring activities.”

As part of learning about the change of season the children have planted bulbs for the Spring and some Winter pansies.

“We are now focusing on New Year planting and our Woodland Trust ‘free trees’ that have just arrived. Our children are learning how important trees are for reducing pollution, providing wood and homes for wildlife and increasing our wellbeing. It’s been a brilliant growing year, and we are all looking forward to next season!”, Gillian finished.

tree planting Just when we thought things were quietening down in the growing garden, our trees arrived!

W

e had four mature trees (two apple and two pear) and fifteen saplings to plant. Ian Barbour guided us brilliantly, showing us all how to plant and stake the apple and pear trees, then how to cluster the saplings in our tyre planters. It’s important to nurture the saplings over the winter months to give them the best start.

Ian suggested that we create a hedge with the saplings (five each of rowan, hawthorn and crab apple) as they will grow faster if they are clustered. This will be a task for the Spring.

The children and staff thoroughly enjoyed the planting session and are excited to see how our trees grow. Maybe some blossom in the Spring, who knows?

New Painting Celebrates Outdoor Learning I

n even more exciting news, Headstart Nursery has commissioned artist Katie Littlefield to paint the nursery children, a celebration of learning in the new garden space.

Katie visited the garden with the children and was inspired by the range of tasks the children undertook and the feeling of busyness during the session. She immediately started sketching ideas to capture the activities she observed. The result is a charming painting entitled ‘Round and Round the Garden’.

Katie also came into the nursery to work with the children on designing bug stones. Whilst working in the garden the children were fascinated by the many bugs they discovered. Thanks to Katie the children have created beautiful bugs to take home and share with their families.

Gillian Robertson of Headstart nursery said, “The painting also captures the children’s interest in bugs and particularly in bees and ladybirds. The bees really love our lavender plants, and the ladybirds seem to prefer the petunias. We are all delighted with the painting that is inspired by the children and captures their joy of learning outdoors.”

T

here was much excitement when the children learned that they were going to visit Skypark’s recycling centre. They knew that the ‘bin-train’ picks up the nursery’s rubbish from the bin bay at the rear of the nursery but had no idea what happens next.

So, decked out in hi-vis vests and safety goggles, they went off to find out more. Centre Manager Malcolm McFetridge and Stephen and Ronnie from our maintenance team took the children through all of the processes, covering many different materials. There was so much to learn. The can crusher and the cardboard compactor were favourites. The children were impressed to learn how 200-300 cans became a small, flattened block and they really enjoyed ‘feeding’ the compactor cardboard boxes.

Gillian Robertson of Headstart nursery said: “The children now check every plastic bottle to find out which number is in the triangle, as they now know that they must be recycled separately. They also know not to put anything inside cans as they will be crushed into flat blocks. They know that food waste can be recycled and are pleased that they can be involved too by feeding the nursery food scraps to the worms in the wormery, leading to the production of fertiliser for our plants.

“Parents have commented on an increased interest in recycling at home and noted that the children are checking their bins. There have also been some questions raised about whether parents’ workplaces recycle as much as they could. It’s fair to say that the children at nursery have become keen recyclers!” finished Gillian.

ur bees have created a bit of a stir with Skyparkers and the local community since they arrived on-site with many of you taking part in our ‘Meet the Bees’ sessions with colleagues. We’ve even had a local newspaper (The Evening Times) come along and report live from one of our interactive sessions.

We also welcomed neighbouring Anderston Primary School and P5/6 pupils as one of the first local schools to take part in our education outreach session.

Environmental education firm Bee Friendly Schools and 100,000 of their Scottish honey worker bees are now based at Skypark after agreeing a partnership that sees the firm’s bee educators deliver a community outreach program.

Liz Hendry, Headteacher at Anderston said of the experience “Our pupils got up close to the bees and had a wonderful experience at their first beekeeping lesson. They enjoyed wearing bee suits and gloves and were able to safely handle the bees. The sessions really demonstrated how important bees are for biodiversity and it was a practical and positive learning experience for our school pupils”.

Beekeeper Wade Ball of The Good Bee Company, who runs the education program said: “Our sessions offer school pupils a real chance to learn through experience, from calming the bees and keeping safe as well as how beeswax and honey are made. As a UK-wide operation we deliver biodiversity

improvement projects across the country but as Glasgow is home, it's great to welcome Anderston Primary School pupils and showcase what bees can bring to the community”.

Bee Friendly Schools delivers environmental and sustainability education programs including ‘Meet the Bees’ engagement sessions as well as working with schools and community organisations throughout the UK; a non-profit education program delivered by The Good Bee Company.

AXIS STUDIOS CREATES VISUAL EFFECTS FOR SONY PICTURES’ A MAN CALLED OTTO I

n the latest news from multi-awardwinning Axis Studios, the team has delivered 250 photoreal shots on Sony Pictures’ comedy-drama A Man Called Otto, starring Tom Hanks and directed

by Marc Forster. As with all work on A Man Called Otto, Axis Studios’ goal was complete photoreal invisibility meaning that audiences are unable to tell that they are looking at a computer generated (CG) image during the film.

A Man Called Otto, which is based on the 2012 novel A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman, tells the story of Otto, his battle with depression and the redemptive relationship he develops with his neighbours. Sony Pictures engaged Axis Studios to deliver a range of invisible visual effects – including a train station sequence, a CG housing estate, and consistent weather effects – that enhanced the film’s drama and designed to keep audiences immersed in the film’s unfolding story.

From its Skypark HQ, Axis boasts an international team of directors, designers, artists, writers and producers, working across its studios. One of the largest CG & VFX teams in the UK with over 400 talented individuals has built a global reputation for award-winning VFX with some of the most successful entertainment companies of all time including Amazon Studios, Netflix and Universal.

Nick Drew, Executive Producer at Axis, said: "Being asked to contribute as the main vendor was a huge privilege for us, especially on such a high-profile project.

We're proud of the scope and look of the visual effects we delivered for such a great film."

Simon Carr, Creative Supervisor at Axis, said: “It was a pleasure to work on A Man Called Otto as my introduction to the team at Axis Studios and to work with Janelle Crowshaw (VFX Supervisor) and Leo Bovell (On-set VFX Supervisor) on a great, heart-warming movie."

Read on to find out how Axis tell the story of A Man Called Otto with visual effects A Man Called Otto required a variety of invisible VFX to immerse its audience in the story and emphasise the drama, such as in one pivotal scene in which Tom Hank’s Otto steps down from a railway platform into the path of an oncoming train. The sequence was filmed on a small section of a set constructed on a street location in Pittsburg. Axis Studios turned this set into a raised railway station with snowy tracks receding into the horizon and added CG trains rushing past on busy tracks. The team worked in pre-production to plan this sequence in detail and used technical pre-visualisation (pre-vis) based on the film’s script and storyboards to determine

how far a train would travel at a given speed and how that would play in shots given the distance of the trains from Otto.

By determining the timings in pre-vis, Axis imbued the scene with a sense of danger and narrative tension while maintaining a high degree of physical realism.

Axis Studios was also responsible for creating the fully CG Birchwood Estate, the estate which is encroaching on the neighbourhood in which Otto lives, witnessed in many shots throughout the film. The Birchwood Estate was based on an actual location which was scanned, rebuilt as a CG environment and reworked to fit in at the end of Otto’s street. The estate was made to feel monotonous and uniform, thus communicating the claustrophobic sense of the world closing in around Otto. Axis Studios also modelled and textured a series of houses for use in blocks of three to five, which were laid out on land slightly higher than Otto’s neighbourhood to add to the sense of overbearing pressure.

During production, lighting often varied enormously during shoot days, with scenes ranging from bright sun to heavily overcast or even snowing weather. The Axis Studios team attended to this by creating photoreal snow and weather effects that ensured continuity across the shoot – for example, by dressing environments, evening up weather cover, adding snow to the ground or flurries of snow in the air, and adding to the on-set special effects snow to help with continuity in camera. The snow also helped to emphasise the bleak nature of Otto’s surroundings.

Axis Studios also created various supporting effects across A Man Called Otto, including digital matte paintings to extend and enhance wide shots of the neighbourhood and train station and a small fleet of CG cars to add to various shots. Axis Studios’ primary vehicle asset was a CG Chevrolet SUV which Otto buys toward the end of the film. The brand-new car model was not yet in production at the

time of the shoot, and only a prototype was available as reference. A similar stand-in model was used for on-set interaction with the actors, which Axis Studios replaced for the final shots.

’ Leidos’ Lauren Lawson Scoops Young Tech Champion Award!

A

massive congratulations to Lauren Lawson who won the Young Tech Champion of the Year Award in the 2023 Scotland Women in Technology (SWiT) Awards announced on 2nd November.

Lauren joined the Leidos family through the Career Ready programme at age 16 and earned a place on the Leidos Technical Graduate Apprenticeship scheme, first completing her Foundation Apprenticeship work placement with Leidos in her free time after school.

In 2023, Lauren completed her BSc (Hons) degree, staying on with Leidos to work in their DevOps team, supporting critical public sector customers such as Scottish Government Warm Scottish Welcome, Defra, MiCase, Marine Fund Scotland and many more.

Fiona Keady, UK Talent Development Business Partner, Leidos said: “Since joining, in addition to her technical work, Lauren has become a key member of our Young Professionals and Women’s Networks as well as becoming a volunteer STEM Ambassador, regularly hosting and supporting events, sharing her experiences and career path to inspire and encourage the next generation. In

Lauren is a huge credit to Leidos UK and we’re so happy for her receiving this well-deserved recognition.”

The 2023 Scotland Women in Technology (SWiT) nominations were held in October. The event brought together women and allies in technology from across Scotland hosting a number of fireside chats, panel sessions, debates, networking. Exhibition Success at Skypark G

lasgow artist Katie Littlefield’s exhibition of Scotland’s coastline, in support of Children’s Hospices Across Scotland (CHAS), ran from August to October in our donated gallery space and raised £200 for the charity which supports babies and children living with lifeshortening conditions.

Inspired by Katie’s love of Scotland’s coastline and her campervan adventures from Barra up to Lewis, the paintings capture seascapes and beach scenes on canvas to be enjoyed forever. An admirer of the Scottish Colourists, Anne Redpath and many contemporary Cornish artists, Katie brought her unique style to Skypark after a successful stint at Pittenweem Arts Festival – her fourth time exhibiting at the prestigious event. Katie has also exhibited in many art club shows, charity exhibitions and galleries.

Commenting on her solo Skypark exhibition, the artist said: “I am glad that people took time out to enjoy my seascape paintings where I have tried to capture the colours and light from sunshine on movement and glorious sunsets, as well as forest scenes, birds and my humorous little people paintings. As a supporter of

20

many charitable causes, I donated 10% of sales from the exhibition to CHAS, a wonderful charity that supports many families across Scotland.”

23 hectare, 8,000 tree riverside rewilding project in Scottish Highlands supported by Startline

A

“riverwoods” rewilding scheme covering 23 riverside hectares and involving the planting of more than 8,000 trees in the Scottish Highlands is being funded by Glasgow-based Startline Motor Finance.

The project – undertaken by rewilding charity Trees for Life – is based in Glen Urquhart, to the west of Loch Ness, and includes urgently-needed habitat restoration for salmon and other native fish which are at risk from rising water temperatures due to a lack of trees to provide vital shade.

The funding will see the creation of native riparian - or riverside – riverwoods woodland along the River Enrick in two areas totalling up to 23 hectares. The project, one of several in Trees for Life’s ambitious Affric Highlands initiative, will also include community engagement as an important element.

Security Star Commendation

ur on-site Skypark security officer Andy Carson has been recognised for providing life saving first aid support to a member of the public who was seriously injured.

Andy who is also a volunteer event manager with the Scottish Fire Brigades Heritage Trust, was awarded the Chief Officer’s Certificate of Commendation in June this year. He said: “Thanks to the work of our wider team on that day we managed to save an individuals life. I am grateful to receive this award alongside my colleagues. I hope that it serves as a reminder of the importance of our commitment to safety and for those who depend on us”.

Dave Adam of Scottish Fire Brigades Heritage Trust added: “Andy has shown that he has made a significant difference to lives of others and is worthy of this award. I am proud that Andy is part of our dedicated community of volunteers at the Trust.”

Ross Haggart, chief officer, Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: “With his training and experience, Andy and his colleagues assessed the individual’s injury and administered life-saving first aid. Andy Carson whose actions of that occasion are worthy of recognition and merit this award”.
