PROCEMX: A CRITICAL MISSION FROM GLASGOW TO GUAM

In this issue, we meet one of our newest Occupiers, technology specialist proceMX founded by Iain Ritchie, who regularly crosses the Atlantic on critical missions supporting Federal Emergencies as well as coordinating power infrastructures during digging and resurfacing work in New York City.

In the latest critical mission, Guam, a US territory which lies to the West Pacific Ocean is vulnerable to cyclones and May’s Super Typhoon Mawar wiped out power supplies to the island’s population.

Iain Ritchie said: “We are currently very active in support of the response to Super Typhoon Mawar in Guam. Working with the US Army Corps of Engineers our MX software manages all aspects of the deployment and maintenance of temporary power following Federal Emergencies. We provide geospatial work and operations management software applications for city operations, energy, utilities and emergency response.”

With all work in the US, Iain is flying the Scottish tech flag and sits on the board of the Scottish North American Business Council. Iain continued: “We sponsored and took part in the 25th Anniversary of Tartan Week along with the UK Department for International Trade (Scotland) at the UK Consular Residence, NYC. We looked at shared experiences around city operations, climate change, resilience and the energy transition between Scotland and New York. It’s an exciting time for us and soon we hope to apply our US expertise to Scottish and UK City infrastructures.”

“We are delighted with our move to Skypark, and with the help we have received from Lynne, Malcolm and the team. In Suite 3/2 we have a superb facility and also believe we have one of the best views of the city!” Iain finished.

STARTLINE IN FUNDING INITIATIVE FOR AWARE SCOTLAND

APPEAL FOR LOCH LOMOND CYCLING FUNDRAISER

“Thanks to the generous support of various individuals and businesses, including Startline Motor Finance, we have been able to provide disabled and disadvantaged young people with memorable experiences. It costs £450 to sponsor a young person for our respite trip, and Startline generously funded the trip for all the children including the cost of their clothes”.

Active Wellbeing and Respite Experiences (AWARE) Scotland was set up in 2022 to provide disabled and disadvantaged young people with opportunities to focus on their physical and mental wellbeing through day trips and excursions.

Christopher Glancey of AWARE Scotland said: “One of the great things about our charity is that many of our young people are dealing with difficult situations at home, and our outings and trips provide them with a break from the stresses of life. It also gives them a chance to make new friends”.

Monthly outings offer activities such as climbing Conic Hill, attending football games, and visiting trampoline parks. The aim is to allow young people to have fun with peers of similar ages, regardless of their backgrounds or needs and up to 60 young people and volunteers have joined the outings.

Chris continued: “Our respite trips to Aviemore involve three nights of fun activities, including canoeing, walking and visiting an adventure park with slides and a ropes course. These trips provide young people with a break from home and the opportunity to try new experiences. We do not charge for any of our outings or trips, and all funds raised go towards covering our costs.

Skypark-based Startline Motor Finance is a leading provider of finance solutions to the UK motor finance market.

Michael Gallagher of Startline Motor Finance, a founder and volunteer with the charity said: “AWARE allows us to support the young people in our community who need it most. Our monthly events and respite trips are only possible with the continued help of our volunteers and the generosity and support that we continue to receive. I am proud to play a small part in our ever-growing community and would urge anyone who would like to get involved or knows of a young person who would benefit to please get in touch via our website: www.awarescotland.co.uk

AWARE Scotland has also launched an appeal for donations to fundraise for a respite trip to Aviemore in September. A fun sponsored cycle from Glasgow to Loch Lomond took place on 10th June. Please visit the Just Giving page to make a donation:

A respite trip to Aviemore for disadvantaged and disabled young people, organised by wellbeing experiences charity AWARE Scotland, has pushed ahead thanks to the support of Startline Motor Finance.

HEADSTART NURSERY CHILDREN IN GROWING SPACE TAKE OVER!

Ona mission to spread hap-pea-ness, Headstart Nursery are branching out to adopt a growing space that will double up as an outdoor classroom and new opportunities for learning.

The Nursery’s growing space donated by Skypark, is part of our ongoing investment in sustainability, ecology and biodiversity. No waste goes to landfill, and everything here is recycled, composted or sent for refused derived fuel.

Gillian Robertson of Headstart nursery said: “Thanks to the Skypark team, our growing space is hugely beneficial as it allows our children to learn by experience and be outdoors. There are so many lessons to learn; from practical measuring to estimating how many bags of compost it will take to fill a planter, budgeting by using

a set amount of money to buy seeds and plants, learning how to germinate seeds, discovering what plants need in order to grow and thrive and how we can best look after them. Let’s not forget how to prepare and cook the fruit and vegetables we actually grow. It is so important that the children understand where their food comes from.

“We are excited to take delivery of fifteen saplings in November from the Woodland Trust’s ‘free trees’ initiative. Our children are learning how important trees are for reducing pollution, providing homes for wildlife, the wood they provide and increasing the wellbeing of humans.”

BUZZY EDUCATORS JOIN SKYPARK!

Skypark is buzzing! It’s great to welcome environmental education firm Bee Friendly Schools and 100,000 of its Scottish honey bees here after agreeing a partnership that sees the firm’s bee educators working from Skypark and delivering a bee education outreach program.

Bee Friendly Schools delivers environmental and sustainability education programs including ‘Meet the bees’ tenant engagement sessions as well as working with schools and community organisations throughout the UK; a non-profit education program delivered by The Good Bee Company.

Wade Ball of The Good Bee Company who runs the education programs and manages the new hives in partnership with Skypark said: “As

a UK-wide operation we deliver biodiversity improvement projects across the country but as Glasgow is home, it’s nice to showcase what bees can bring to a community right here in the city. Our work is centred on getting people involved in ecosystem restoration. Finding nature-based solutions underpin everything we do, and in the post-covid workplace bringing people together and maximising productivity is something we are proud to help businesses do, in collaboration with the planet’s hardest workers.”

THE PYRAMID AT ANDERSTON EASTER EGG DONATION

Our local community space, The Pyramid in Anderston was alive with the sound of clicking and clacking earlier this year after a large donation of Easter eggs to their ‘Knit and Natter ‘group.

The egg-xtra special gifts were then given to children at Anderston Primary School and our youngest Skypark campus residents – the children attending our onsite nursery Headstart.

YOUTH RUNWAY SHOW MAKING A DIFFERENCE RAISED FOR CLYDE RAPE CRISIS CHARITY

We were so proud to support the 2023 fundraising awareness campaign and experience the 9th Annual Charity Fashion Show organised by Glasgow University when it presented YOUTH in aid of Glasgow and Clyde Rape Crisis in February.

As the largest event run solely by students in Glasgow, in 8 years GUCFS has raised over £197,000 for their chosen charities and provides students with invaluable experiences and opportunities.

This year over £44K was raised for Glasgow & Clyde Rape Crisis, a free and confidential service for women and girls experiencing sexual assault, rape or abuse at any time in their lives.

We look forward to seeing where they go next and how Skypark can support young people and their work for this amazing charity in future.

SUCCESS FOR LEIDOS SCHOOLS’ SHOWCASE OF STEM CHALLENGES 2023!

It’sbeen a brilliant year for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths) collaboration, which culminated in a number of local schools taking part in a showcase event on Thursday 15th June at Skypark!

The showcase event was the finale of the 2022/23 Education Industry Partnership (EIP) programme, run collaboratively by STEM education charity SSERC and global technology company Leidos, that aims to get young people engaged in STEM subjects and careers by bringing industry and education together.

Based in Leidos’ UK headquarters in Skypark, Fiona Keady (Talent Development Business Partner and STEM Group Chair) explains:

“As well as showcasing and celebrating what they have learned, it was a great opportunity for the young people to build their confidence and communication skills by speaking to people they have never met before and answering questions on the spot. Afterwards, the pupils were rewarded with award certificates, a special gift and a trip to the IMAX!”

Leidos funds the programme, including the schools’ travel, teacher cover, showcase day, gifts and the IMAX visit, to make sure there are no barriers to schools getting involved. After the summer, the 2023/24 programme will launch to find a new set of teams. Applications are welcome from local schools, from Primary 6/7 to Secondary School S1/S2/S3 level.

Fiona continues: “Our 6 schools in the 2022/23 EIP programme were Cleveden, Jordanhill, Shawlands, St Andrew’s, St Margaret’s and Woodfarm. The showcase involved all the school teams demonstrating what they have learned and achieved throughout the programme over the past seven months with the help of their Leidos mentor.

Please email STEM-UK@uk.leidos.com to be added to the interest list.

“As a STEM employer, we want to reduce STEM skill shortages, increase diversity and inclusion, and show that STEM careers can be for everyone. This unique EIP programme in partnership with SSERC is helping us reach and engage with more young people, supporting them to develop and take ownership of their own STEM path and inspire others.”

PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION: ‘OFF THE BEATEN TRACK’ CELEBRATES THE UNCONVENTIONAL

Emma Flood’s debut photography exhibition ‘Off the Beaten Track’, invites us to forgo the conventional and explore the undiscovered paths of Loch Lomond and delve into the hidden cultural gems that make the cities of Glasgow and Edinburgh sparkle.

Commenting on her first photography exhibition, amateur photographer Emma Flood said: “Off the Beaten Track is about looking for things off the tourist map that catch my eye. Glasgow and Edinburgh are such beautiful cities and they each have hidden gems and there are new images from Loch Lomond where I was brought up.

‘Off the Beaten Track’ runs until 31st July.

KRIS KESIAK’S WOMEN@COP26 LEGACY EXHIBITION

Special thanks to the talented Scottish-based photographer Kris Kesiak and Glasgow’s Education Services for show casing Women@COP26 here; a series of photographs documented by Kris that frame a female vision on climate and gender issues.

This legacy project for women and girls, spearheaded by Glasgow’s Education Services in partnership with Glasgow Caledonian University and Women of the World Foundation, was created in 2021 where 2,500 young women from Glasgow’s Secondary Schools came together at “#GirlsAtCOP26 – The Solutions are Feminist” at the Glasgow Caledonian University.

A panel of experts including former Irish President Dr Mary Robinson, joined the girls to discuss the global issues around UN Sustainable Goal 5, alongside health, environment and gender as well as other challenges that can affect women and girls’ bodies.

Photographer Kris Kesiak who documented the events said: “Getting the opportunity to meet, listen to, and photograph such a diverse range of women was a privilege. It was a joy to have my images on display at Skypark, a place I know so well. It was also the very first portrait exhibition there I believe which makes it even more special”.
