A Letter from the President
Dear Salpointe Lancers, Salpointe Catholic is proud to be a Carmelite school and we honor this legacy by giving gratitude to the men and women who breathe life into our sacred mission. We would not be the school we are today without the dedication of our faculty and staff, the commitment of our boards and committees, the confidence of parents who entrust Salpointe with the education of their children, and the generosity of our donors. As we build the next chapter of Salpointe’s story, we recognize that our narrative is most powerful when Lancers come together as one community to celebrate our traditions, our faith and our vision for tomorrow.
We started the year with a most unexpected and unwelcome arson fire on July 17 that destroyed our venerable 700 English wing. Finally able to put two years of the Covid pandemic behind us, we were poised for a year of normalcy. We did not get it. Instead, we had to find a way to start school under less than perfect circumstances. We rallied, installed modular classrooms and moved forward as best we could.
After several listening sessions with faculty, staff, boards and committees, we decided to turn this adversity into opportunity. We would rebuild for the future, not the past. Working with Rick Huch and Seaver Franks Architects, who designed our Sayre Stevens Student Center and Stearns Center for the Arts, we developed a plan to construct eleven classrooms and the Center for Wellness, further defining our commitment to holistic education as we develop the whole child. Now, the plans are completed, the permits are ready and the fundraising is a success. Thanks to the generosity of many donors who believe in the mission and vision of Salpointe, we have raised $4.25M. Unfortunately, our insurance carrier since 1996, Christian Brothers Services, has not shown a willingness to provide a just and reasonable settlement. We are not able to demolish the destroyed structure and move forward with our “Rise Above” construction until we come to a resolution with the insurance company, hopefully sooner than later.
Nonetheless, Salpointe continues to lead as a high school of distinction. The school is nationally accredited by Western Catholic Education Association, internationally accredited by Cognia and our Cracchiolo Family STEM Center is nationally accredited by STEM.org. We offer college prep, honors, and 21 Advanced Placement courses as well as dual credit with the University of Arizona and Seton Hill University. Salpointe continues in our mission to educate the whole child: spiritual, intellectual, artistic, physical, emotional, social and environmental. It truly was a banner year of excellence in all areas, including Humanities, athletics, fine and performing arts and STEM. Salpointe is a Catholic school, in every class, every activity and every moment. Our shared faith guides the way we care for ourselves, each other and our world. Our Lancers live the Carmelite spirit of prayer, service and community day in and day out. They participate in countless Masses, Theology classes, Days of Recollection, Kairos retreats and they serve our community with thousands of volunteer hours. We are proud that our Lancers are steeped in our faith and that it guides their lives.
Congratulations are in order for the 291 graduates of the class of 2023. The members of this class have been accepted to over 200 colleges and universities across America and the world. In addition to Arizona’s fine universities, members of this class were offered acceptance to prestigious universities such as Fordham, NYU, Johns Hopkins, Notre Dame, Marquette, Carnegie Mellon, Purdue, Penn State and Boston College, to name just a few. The members of this class earned a record $25.5M in merit academic scholarships. Forty-three students are Salpointe Scholars with grade point averages of 4.0 or higher. The strength, determination and resolve of this class are admirable. Facing unprecedented challenges coping with a pandemic during their high school adventure and facing more adversity as a result of the fire, they demonstrated tenacity, resilience and enthusiasm as they made adjustments and moved forward, embracing all of the once-in-a-lifetime signature events that mark the high school years here at Salpointe.
The Carmelite Order and Salpointe’s leadership are grateful to our highly engaged Board of Directors who guide the school to fulfill its mission. Under the able leadership of Chairman Pat P. Lopez, Jr.,’74, the members of the Board of Directors, the Academic, Advancement, Athletic, Facilities, Finance, Governance, Investment and Strategic Planning committees provide invaluable oversight to all areas of the school.
Finally, we extend gratitude to the Salpointe Catholic Education Foundation board, led this year by Dr. Kevin Boesen, and the Salpointe Parent Association board, led by Virkine Valenzuela Weitman ’90, for serving the needs of the Lancers. The SCEF works to maintain excellence in education and SPA builds community by hosting welcoming events for our Lancer students, parents, past parents and alumni. We are grateful for their unfailing support!
It is always a great day to be a Lancer and we invite you to join in our pride! You, our Lancer family, are an integral part of Salpointe’s past, present and future.
Gratefully,
Kay Sullivan, President
2022-2023
A Letter from the Board Chair
Hi, Lancers!
I want to start by thanking all of you for your support and caring for Salpointe Catholic High School. We all know how critical Salpointe’s mission is to the lifelong success of the students we serve. Your caring dedication to the Salpointe community and students is greatly appreciated.
I know how much all of you care because of your unsolicited support last summer when we learned that the wing at the southeast corner of the campus was destroyed by a senseless arson fire. Many of you offered to help even before we asked for help or knew how we would rebuild or what it would cost. Thank you!
We can now tell you that, because of your generosity, and the leadership of our exceptional staff, the tragedy has been turned into an opportunity. We will be replacing the destroyed one story building with a new elegant two-story structure. This two-story building will allow Salpointe to accommodate all its teaching faculty and allow Salpointe to add a wellness program focused on the physical and mental health of our students.
I was shocked when I learned of the arson, but delighted when I heard of the new plan and your response. The generosity of Salpointe’s many supporters and the creativity of Salpointe’s leadership and staff has caused me to see this tragedy as a blessing. Thank you for your continued support of, and prayers for, Salpointe.
Sincerely,
Pat Lopez, Class of ’74 and Chairman of the Board of Directors
A Letter from the Principal
Dear Students, Staff, Parents and Community Members, Thank you for welcoming me and my family into the Salpointe community and for the opportunity to go on this incredible journey with you. This past academic year has been filled with remarkable accomplishments, notable challenges and countless memorable moments.
With the fire just two weeks after starting my Salpointe journey, I had the opportunity to see our community at its best. The love and generosity that was shown to our school still warms my heart. I knew immediately that becoming a Lancer was a gift from God. Gifts from God continued to show up early on as I watched teachers, displaced by the fire, cross campus from one end to the other to eat lunch together. Our English teachers became the best of friends with Theology, science and history teachers.
Our school recognizes the importance of mental health and well-being. We implemented a wellness program, hosted guest speakers on mental health awareness and facilitated a variety of programs to help our students through this amazing and difficult time in their lives. As we look towards next year with our new schedule, we will be able to expand this initiative through community periods and an increase in differentiated and engaging offerings.
As we continue to close the COVID learning gaps through intervention, we commit to raising the bar for our students. The academic rigor at Salpointe remains steadfast as we prepare our students for college and beyond.
The Class of 2023 celebrated their graduation, marking a milestone in their educational journey. We saw an increase in academic scholarships this year, showcasing the dedication and hard work of our students. We increased the number of AP courses and showed improvement in our PSAT scores. Our STEM department continued to shine with their participation in Racing the Sun, and our STEM Director, Cecilia Gossler, was awarded the University of Arizona’s Systems & Industrial Engineering Department’s Alumna of the Year.
I want to express my sincere gratitude to the students, parents, staff and community members for their unwavering support and commitment to our school. Together, we have achieved remarkable milestones, faced challenges head-on and continued to nurture our vibrant learning environment. I am immensely proud to be part of this exceptional school community.
With sincere appreciation,
SALPOINTE TODAY SUMMER 2023 5

The Carmelite Charism: A Desire for God in the World
For over 800 years, the Carmelites throughout the world have strived to share their charism with people from various cultures and backgrounds— all seeking guidance as they journey to perfect union with the Beloved. Faith and reason play a crucial role in seeking God; likewise, spirituality and religion illuminate the way to perfect union with our Beloved. For the Carmelites, our spirituality is founded on three pillars: Prayer, Community and Service.
Prayer is how the Carmelites relate to God, both as individuals and as a community. Through prayer we become open to God who gradually transforms us through the events of our lives. This process of transformation allows us to sustain authentic relationships; it makes us willing and eager to serve, as well as capable of compassion and solidarity. Prayer is practiced throughout the day at Salpointe, grounding and inspiring our students.
Our Carmelite charism cannot be lived completely without the people of God. We call this pillar community. As Carmelites, we gather to pray and celebrate the Eucharist during all-school Masses. We also share this community aspect at Salpointe through Kairos retreats and Days of Recollection.
As Carmelites, we also understand that not all people have the same opportunities to excel in life. This leads me to the third and final pillar— service. Our faith in God is not only to seek the Beloved by ourselves, but also through the less fortunate in our community. During their four years at Salpointe, our students are required to complete forty hours of service. Some students volunteer to help during our monthly school Masses as sacristans or Extraordinary Ministers of the Holy Communion. Students also volunteer at a wide variety of local non-profits such as Kino Border Initiative, Habitat for Humanity, Ronald McDonald House and more.
In summary, Salpointe is a place where we strive to live out our faith in God, by the community we form and by the service we provide to each other. It is through these three pillars, faith, community and service, that we guide our lives to seek the Beloved, God the Creator, God the Son and Savior. r, and God the Holy Spirit.
Father Edgar E. López, O.Carm., originally from Guatemala, raised in North Hollywood, CA, joined the Carmelite Order in 2003, Ordained a Carmelite on May 11, 2013. He has a Masters Degree in Divinity and Marriage and Family Therapy from Fuller Theological Union in Pasadena, CA. He has been part-time school chaplain and teacher at Salpointe since 2022. He is also a part-time family therapist at Catholic Community Services in Tucson. He resides at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Monastery and Priory in Tucson, AZ.

Carmelite Medal Winners
The Carmelite Medal identifies one male and one female student from the senior class who best exemplify the true meaning of a Salpointe Catholic education. These honored students consistently demonstrate the Carmelite charism of prayer, community and service.
The winners of the Carmelite Medal, Salpointe’s most prestigious award, are presented with individual medals and have their names engraved on a permanent plaque which is displayed on campus.
Our female winner is a young woman who has truly made the most of her Salpointe education. She has been involved in a wide variety of activities that demonstrate her creativity, leadership and concern for others. She is an amazing artist who has become an expert at using technology to create wonderful works of art. She is a quiet but powerful servant leader who inspires others to do their best. Even though a self-proclaimed introvert, she has stretched herself by being a STUCO and NHS officer and taking on speaking roles at school events. She does it all with perseverance, kindness and a commitment to always do her best. She consistently demonstrates the life skills of resilience and compassion for others and is recognized by her peers, teachers and counselors as someone who truly makes a difference. Our 2023 female Carmelite Medal winner is Sevilla Smith .
Our male winner exemplifies true servant leadership and a passion for making a difference. He has been a formidable presence not just within our school community but also in the larger city and state community. His desire to be a civil servant has led him to do extensive volunteer work in election campaigns, and he has been a part of the Tucson community dialogue about Laudato Si. He is an officer with the Governor’s Youth Commission which has focused on addressing mental health issues among young people. He has dedicated himself to our Campus Ministry program - most notably as a member of our liturgy committee and as a Kairos leader. It is clear that this young man lives the Carmelite values of prayer, community and service every day. Our 2023 male Carmelite Medal winner is Felipe Garcia
Class of 1953 celebrates their 70th Anniversary
Pat Taylor represented the Class of 1953 at graduation this year as we celebrated the 70th anniversary of the first graduating class of Salpointe. The Class of 1953 is responsible for so many of Salpointe’s long standing traditions: they selected the Lancer mascot, the maroon and gold colors and the school banner. They named the yearbook “Horizons” and the newspaper “Crusader.” Pat was among many leaders in this class and she continues to lead today by serving on the Salpointe Board of Directors since 2005. She was inducted to the 2003 inaugural class of the Salpointe Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame. Named Tucson Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Woman of the Year, Pat is a former top level executive at Raytheon. Salpointe was delighted to honor Pat and the Class of 1953!

Bijan Robinson ’20 Brings
His Faith to the NFL
Salpointe’s own Bijan Robinson has had an extraordinary football career, and he’s just getting started! After setting an Arizona state record in rushing (7,036 yards and 114 touchdowns) and being selected to play in the 2020 All-American Bowl, Bijan headed to the University of Texas as a five-star recruit. During his college career, he was unanimously named an All-American and won the Doak Walker Award for best running back in the nation. Bijan was selected by the Atlanta Falcons as the eighth overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft and will be cheered on by Lancers and Longhorns across the country during his first preseason NFL game on August 11, 2023.
When asked in 2022 about his goals, Bijan responded, “I just want to be the best teammate and player that I can be for this team, this university, my family and God.” Bijan’s faith is shared in each interview he gives, where he thanks God for the good in his life, expresses his trust in God’s plan and clearly intends to bring his faith with him to the NFL. In an interview with ESPN shortly after the NFL Draft, Bijan said, “For me, my heart is out there for everybody and I’m going to bring my faith, my positivity, my happiness and smile to every fan, every teenager, every adult, everybody out there, so I hope they accept me for me. It’s going to be a great time.”
Bijan’s grandmother, Gerri Robinson, credits his faith, determination, discipline and passion for his success. “Bijan always kept his eyes on the prize and made sure he did the things he needed to do to get where he wanted to go.” The four year-old boy who once introduced himself as “Bijan Robinson and I’m in the NFL” is now a faith-filled young man who has not only reached his athletic goals, but serves his community as a role model to those around him.
Salpointe congratulates Bijan, a young man of God who shows us his kindness, optimism and talent every day. We are proud of you and pray for your success and happiness.

The totally tubular 34th Salpointe 80s Prom Gala was held on Saturday, April 22 in the Kalil Family Gymnasium on Salpointe’s campus. The Gala Committee created an awesome evening that took guests back to a time of rubik’s cubes, cassette tapes and Pac Man. Over 200 guests were decked out with big hair, parachute pants and pink Gunne Sax dresses. They had a radical time sipping Jungle Juice, dancing under a disco ball to all the best 80s tunes by cover band Gigi and the Glow and bidding on unique live and silent auction items including signed memorabilia by NFL First Round Draft pick Bijan Robinson ’20. All of this while supporting the Salpointe Catholic Education Foundation.
The gala raised over $58,000 to benefit the Lancers. Thank you to all the Gala sponsors, donors and attendees for your support.

12th Annual Lady Lancer Brunch and Blessing
Sunday, February 11, 2024
New Salpointe parents are invited to our New Parent Coffee on Friday, August 4, 2023 from 7:45 - 9:00 a.m. in the Library. This is a great opportunity to meet with other parents and hear from Salpointe’s administration as we begin another exciting school year.
The Salpointe Parent Association had another busy year building community. In addition to its signature events, Lancer Men’s Mass and Breakfast and Lady Lancer Brunch and Blessing, SPA hosted three new events this year: Grandparents Day, Christmas Tree Lighting and Easter Egg Hunt. On November 22, Salpointe welcomed over 200 grandparents who enjoyed a lesson in US history followed by a pep assembly with their grandchildren. The inaugural Christmas tree lighting in Junior Patio included hot cocoa, cookies, caroling and pictures with Santa. SPA finished the year by hiding almost 2,000 candy-filled eggs all over campus for the students to collect. The events were hugely successful and great affirmations of our Catholic identity.

Catching up with the Quigleys
Carolyn Quigley ’04
Describe your educational journey after Salpointe: I attended the University of Arizona where I studied Human Physiology and Spanish. I then attended medical school at Loyola University of Chicago Stritch School of Medicine, where I did a global health fellowship working at a primary care clinic in rural Bolivia. I completed my family medicine residency training at the University of Arizona.
What path did your career take? I always planned to be a physician and was very fortunate to be able to pursue this career path. I work at El Rio Health in Tucson in adult primary care, pediatrics, breastfeeding medicine and teen reproductive and sexual health.
How did Salpointe make a difference in your life? Salpointe prepared me well for my future educational and personal endeavors. I formed lifelong friendships and I am still best friends with my high school crew! We have seen each other through university, grad school, first jobs, sickness, marriage, kids and all the ups and downs of life. There is no doubt I was well prepared from the educational side, but Salpointe’s emphasis on nourishing all parts of one’s life really stuck with me and has kept me afloat during the more stressful years of my medical training. Lastly, Salpointe’s emphasis on service was at the root of my desire to go into medicine and energizes my daily life as a mother, wife and doctor.
Kaitlyn Quigley ’05
Describe your educational journey after Salpointe: I attended Loyola College in Maryland, where I studied political science and Spanish. I spent a year with the Jesuit Volunteer Corps in San Francisco and then went to law school at Northwestern University in Chicago.
What path did your career take? After law school, I served as a law clerk to a justice of the Arizona Supreme Court and a judge of the United States District Court for the District of Arizona and then worked as a litigation associate for a large law firm in Chicago. I then spent about five years at Legal Aid Chicago, where I staffed and later managed medical-legal partnership projects. During the pandemic, I moved back to Tucson, and I now work in the career office of the law school at the University of Arizona.
How did Salpointe make a difference in your life? I can think of three main ways that Salpointe made a difference in my life:
1) Spanish: I studied AP Spanish with Profe Joe Neilson and Mr. John Morgan and entered college with strong language skills, allowing me to study abroad in Buenos Aires and El Salvador. Spanish language ability later proved critical for my work in legal aid, where I served many monolingual Spanish speakers.
2) Humanities: My experience with the Humanities Program at Salpointe made me want to study at a liberal arts college. I arrived at Loyola as a strong writer and analyzer, which was important for my academic success in college
(and later in law school). 3) Social Justice: Mr. Becker’s social justice class in many ways was the launch pad for my journey to Loyola, Casa de la Solidaridad in El Salvador, Jesuit Volunteer Corps and law school where I went with the intent to become a legal aid lawyer.
Colleen Quigley ’08
Describe your educational journey after Salpointe:
I completed my bachelor’s degree in French and Spanish from Loyola University in Chicago and earned a master’s degree in Foreign Service from Georgetown University.
What path did your career take? I always knew I wanted my career to involve something international, and what that has meant to me has evolved over the years. When I finished college, I worked in education, teaching bilingual primary school in Chicago with Teach For America and English in Nicaragua with the Jesuit Volunteer Corps. After a few more years teaching and earning a master’s degree, I transitioned to service with the federal government, where I now work as a Foreign Service Officer (or diplomat) for the Department of State. How did Salpointe make a difference in your life? Salpointe’s values of community, respect and justice have stayed with me throughout my education and career. These values inform my decision making, help me overcome challenges and remind me how I strive to treat others in every interaction.
James Quigley ’14
Describe your educational journey after Salpointe:
I attended the Barrett Honors College at Arizona State University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Software Engineering with a Minor in Business.
What path did your career take? During college I interned at Photon Engineering and Raytheon, and worked at Reztech, a small web development consulting company in Tempe. After graduation, I accepted an offer at Axosoft, a company that makes productivity tools for software developers. At Axosoft I was a DevOps Engineer, but also quickly took on the role of IT Director. I have continued to work in tech engineering and now serve as the Staff Site Reliability Engineer at Oscar Health in New York City.
How did Salpointe make a difference in your life? I had some amazing teachers at Salpointe who definitely helped shape who I am! People like Marco Enriquez, David Garwacki and many others pushed and encouraged me. I also think the well-rounded curriculum was great for me. I find myself feeling privileged that Salpointe had great arts and extra curricular programs, such as choir and sports. It is amazing that I could have a full day of school, do choir practice and then go to the on-site sports medicine doctor to get treatment before my soccer game. That’s not an option at many colleges, much less high schools.

Artist James Magner ’60
Artist James Magner ’60 started a blog writing venture titled PTSD & Art following the pandemic. James believed there was a strong disconnect and yearning for connection when artists weren’t able to share and show their art during the pandemic. Having written art columns for many years, he figured this was as good a time as any to start this new creative journey. The purpose is simple: to help humans connect and relate to one another through art and collective experiences. Everyone experiences some form of trauma in their lives, but art can be used to reframe your trauma, connect you to God (and each other) and help you move forward. What does James ultimately hope to accomplish with this venture? “I would like to bring the students and graduates of Salpointe, and the rest of the world, together to survive as intelligent, emotional-creative beings,” says Magner. Subscribers currently span 26 states and 11 countries and the platform is growing every day. James credits Salpointe for giving him his first chance to write and publish: he was assigned to the “Teen Citizen” to report on class happenings, was the sports correspondent to the “Citizen” and also wrote for the Salpointe paper and yearbook. James went on to receive a BFA in Art at the University of Arizona and then joined the Army Infantry. After serving in Vietnam, he received a Masters Degree in Special Education, followed by a Doctorate in Education Administration. His Catholic faith has always been important to him and at the forefront of his life, through his time in the military, his education and beyond. He is proud to say he passed those values on to his five children.
In addition to his column and paintings, he has written three novels: A Haunting Beauty: Vietnam Through the Eyes of an Artist, John Dillinger and Geronimo: The War in Skeleton Canyon and The Dead Man on the Corner: A Sky Pirates Adventure . You can sign up for his PTSD & Art newsletter, which goes out twice a month, at https://ptsdart.substack.com/. It is free and easy to subscribe and share! James currently lives in Maryland with his wife, where he spends his time painting and writing.
Salpointe Rises Above Adversity
After the arson fire on July 17, 2022 destroyed the English building, Salpointe began exploring how to turn this adversity into opportunity. Knowing that the building was beyond repair, we chose to build for the future, not the past. We created a plan to construct a two-story facility that will serve as the home for Salpointe’s integrative wellness center and include a wellness activity room, meditation studio and teaching kitchen. This nationally innovative center will focus on the most important six dimensions of wellness for high school students: spiritual, intellectual, physical, emotional, social and environmental. Additionally, the new structure will house eleven state of the art classrooms, assuring that every Salpointe teacher has his/her own classroom.
We are grateful to the many donors who have generously supported this endeavor, especially those who have gifted $25,000 or above:

Thank you 2022-23 Corporate Tax Credit Partners!
Each year, more than 300 Lancers qualify for tuition assistance through the Arizona Corporate Tax Credit Program. These students’ families live at 185% of the federal poverty level or lower and would not be able to attend Salpointe without the support of local companies. Since the program’s inception in 2006, Salpointe’s tax credit partners have generously invested in the education of our students and helped to break the cycle of poverty for thousands of Tucsonans. If you are the principal of an S or C corp and would like to help our most vulnerable Lancers, please contact Jennifer Harris, Director of Advancement, at jharris@salpointe.org or 520-547-1952.
