A Letter from the President Dear Salpointe Lancers, Salpointe is proud to be a Carmelite school and we celebrate this legacy by honoring the people who breathe life into our sacred mission. We would not be the school we are today without the dedication of our faculty and staff, the commitment of our boards and committees, the confidence of parents who entrust Salpointe with the education of their children, and the generosity of our donors. As we build the next chapter of Salpointe’s story, we recognize that our narrative is most powerful when Lancers come together as one community to celebrate our traditions, our faith and our vision for tomorrow.

Salpointe continues to lead as a high school of distinction. Congratulations are in order for so many, starting with the Class of 2022. This group of 292 seniors wowed us with their talent, energy and commitment to Lancer values. The members of this class were accepted to 185 colleges and universities across America and earned $19.5M in academic merit scholarships. Forty-three students graduated as Salpointe Scholars with grade point averages of 4.0 or higher. Three Lancers will enter college as National Merit Commended Students and two as National Hispanic Scholars. Ten Lancers will serve in the United States military. These Lancers leave as young adults of character and confidence: they are resilient, proud, respectful, accountable, hopeful and prepared. Thank you, Class of 2022, for bringing high honor to yourselves and to Salpointe!

The Stearns Center for the Arts has fulfilled Salpointe’s aspirational vision to bring transformative synergy and collaboration to the school’s performing and visual arts programs. In the newly renovated Corcoran Theater, Lancer Thespians produced three amazing full-scale productions and two one-act plays: Disaster the Musical, The Man Who Came to Dinner, Little Shop of Horrors, Governing Alice and Rockin’ Cinderella. We initiated the first all-high school production for Literacy Connects, Stories that Soar High. Eighteen Lancers received Superior rankings at the Southern Arizona Acting Festival and qualified for the International Thespian Competition. For the 23rd consecutive year Troupe 5370 was awarded the Gold Honor Troupe by the International Thespian Society. Congratulations, Lancers!

In Instrumental Music, the focus in the Pocono Music Studio was “Reaching for Excellence” and our ensembles did exactly that. In addition to entertaining at football games and campus activities, the Lancer Marching Band successfully participated in regional and statewide competition and returned to the long standing tradition of marching in the Tucson Rodeo Parade. Salpointe’s Maroon & Gold Lancer Jazz Band participated in the NAU Jazz Festival, earning two individual soloist awards and an Excellent rating. The Spring Fine Arts Festival, featuring all Lancer musical and choir ensembles, was a manifestation of the synergistic and collaborative vision of Stearns Center for the Arts.

In Dance, students were able to thrive in the Ginny L. Clements Dance Studio featuring floor to ceiling mirrors and a floating floor. Award winning dancers performed under the lights in the Corcoran Theater to full houses at both the fall and spring showcases The Lancer Concert Choir performed three varied programs with music in seven languages across eras ranging from the 16th to the 21st centuries. Three students competed at the District Solo and Ensemble competition, earning two Excellent and one Superior rating.

In the Czarina and Humberto S. Lopez Visual Arts Studios, our 2D art students enjoyed learning and confidence building with the full array of technical artistic processes. Students in the 3D art studio sculpted with clay and completed their creations by glazing and firing in our new kilns. Several visual arts students exhibited at the University of Arizona Art Invitational as well as the Pima County Library High School Juried Art Show. Additionally, Salpointe proudly presented four shows exhibiting student and community art in the stunning Stevens Gallery.

In athletics, the Lancers earned eight state championships: dance, men’s cross country, women’s basketball, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, beach volleyball, softball and women’s track and field. Go Lancers! All 26 Lancer teams earned the AIA Team Scholar Athlete award for having team GPAs of 3.5 or higher. Thirty five students, over 10% of this class, will participate in athletics at the collegiate level. Congratulations!

A Letter from the Board Chair “Move Forward!” We should all adopt this as our motto. We cannot change the past, but we can impact the present and influence the future. We may not agree with everyone in our country, in our community, or even in our family, but we can all respectfully and compassionately dialogue with each other and help make the world a better place.

In Humanities, accomplished Lancers were not only exceptional thinkers and learners, but their ability to make connections among literature, theology, art and philosophy within the context of both national and global communities was both impressive and inspiring. AP Literature students dove deeply into the complexities inherent in the human condition: the flaws, beauty, triumphs and pitfalls of humanity. They discussed their own roles as change makers. Striving for sophistication, this year’s Humanities students exceeded the expectations set by the program since 1978.

Salpointe is proud to be home to the nationally accredited Cracchiolo Family Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics program.

STEM students were awarded 1st place in engineering innovation in the Racing the Sun solar kart competition. Programming students earned 53 microcredentials in cyber security, data science and artificial intelligence.

For the first time, Advanced Engineering students took the industry standard Solidworks certification test, providing students the opportunity to work as CAD/CAM designers. Engineering students literally flew to new heights, building drones and passing the FAA’s recreational drone pilot test. Senior engineering students earned college credit by participating in the U of A’s “Solar Oven Throwdown.” In April, STEM students showed innovation and problem solving in the annual STEM Showcase. And by the way, over the past six years, the number of female students has more than tripled in our Engineering Fundamentals, Robotics, and Programming electives!

Salpointe’s Campus Ministry Department provided the capstone Kairos retreat to almost 200 seniors. This time honored, four day signature Salpointe program provides the opportunity for self reflection and building relationships with God and fellow retreatants. The Campus Ministry Department also welcomed student participation in YouCarm, part of the International Carmelite youth group, and in the liturgy team, a dedicated group of Lancers who worked to make our all-school masses inspirational experiences for our community.

The Carmelite fathers and Salpointe’s leadership are grateful to our highly engaged Board of Directors who guide the school to fulfill its mission. Under the able leadership of Pat P. Lopez, Jr.,’74, the Board and its Academic, Advancement, Athletic, Facilities, Finance, Governance, Investment and Strategic Planning committees provide invaluable oversight to all areas of the school.

Finally, we extend gratitude to the Salpointe Catholic Education Foundation board, led this year by Dr. Craig Hoover, and the Salpointe Parent Association board, led by Jennifer Barner, for once again serving the needs of the Lancers. The SCEF works to maintain excellence in education and SPA builds community by hosting welcoming events for our Lancer parents, past parents and alumni. We are grateful for their welcoming hospitality and unfailing support!

It is always a great day to be a Lancer and we invite you to join in our pride! You, our Lancer family, are an integral part of Salpointe’s past, present and future.

Welcome Ardemis Martin With the approval of the Carmelite Province of the Most Pure Heart of Mary and the Salpointe Catholic Board of Directors, Salpointe is pleased to announce the appointment of Mrs. Ardemis T. Martin as Salpointe Catholic’s next principal, effective July 1, 2022. Mrs. Martin has sixteen years experience in education. She served as a classroom teacher at St. Cyril of Alexandria School for six years and then as teacher, instructional coach, administrator and principal of Legacy Traditional School for the past ten years. “The opportunity to support all aspects of Lancer life from academics to athletics and theater to STEM has me thrilled to begin this new journey. Thank you for welcoming me into your community. I am proud to be a Lancer,” said Martin. Welcome!

Salpointe Catholic is proud to be a Catholic high school working in concert with the Diocese of Tucson and participating in the network of forty Carmelite-owned schools worldwide. Our Catholic faith and our Carmelite tradition form the essence of who we are as a community. We at Salpointe commit to embrace, practice, model and live the fullness of our Catholic faith.

This faith is revealed in scripture, liturgy,

church leadership and church tradition.

Fundamental to our faith is the belief that “the dignity of the human person is rooted in his creation in the image and likeness of God” as proclaimed in the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

Additionally, Salpointe honors its Carmelite heritage. “Carmelites understand their lives to be influenced by the power of his Spirit, enabling each to discover the call of the divine to live together in mutual service of one another and of all people.”

“The Carmelite’s entire life is characterized by an intense search for God with total adherence to the teachings of Christ. This requires one to be transformed in Christ - a continual process of conversion. Living

We live in allegiance to and walk in the footsteps of Jesus Christ as we commit ourselves to the dignity of the human person by respecting people of every gender, race, ethnic heritage, creed, sexual orientation and financial resources.

The principles of family, community, participation, dignity of work, option for the poor, and care for God’s creation inspire our communities and ministries to always teach the truth of our history and work for social justice.

As a result, we do not support unjust systems of racism, sexism, homophobia, xenophobia, human trafficking and slavery of any kind, and the injust system that does not promote the dignity of the human person that is a true gift from God. May our God, through the intercession of Elijah the Prophet and Mary the mother of Jesus Christ, continue to transform us as we are called to conversion of heart, mind, body, and soul.

(Carmelite.org website) The Order of the Carmelites of the Most Pure Heart of Mary recently published a statement on human rights (see below), which aligns with the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

Devoted to the doctrines of the Catholic faith through this lens of Carmelite charism, we at Salpointe commit to honor these teachings as we build the Salpointe Catholic of today and tomorrow.

College Decisions and Statistics Graduates plan to attend institutions of higher learning, here in Arizona and across the country and abroad.

The 283 graduating seniors submitted a total of 941 college applications, with 52% going to institutions outside of Arizona.

Students were admitted to 185 institutions. 18% of those acceptances were to Catholic colleges. 11% have been admitted to honors programs.

Class of 2022 College Acceptances Salpointe Catholic High School is proud to announce that students in the Class of 2022 have been admitted to the following 185 colleges, universities, schools and military branches. *Almost 80% of the members of the graduating class were offered merit scholarships totalling $19,500,000 over four years. Salpointe also had 43 Class of 2022 Salpointe Scholars who maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA during their first seven semesters as a Lancer.

Carmelite Medal Winners The Carmelite Medal honors one male and one female student from the senior class who best exemplify the true meaning of a Salpointe Catholic education. These honored students have consistently demonstrated the Carmelite charism of prayer, community and service.

The winners of the Carmelite Medal, Salpointe’s most prestigious award, are presented with individual medals and have their names engraved on a permanent plaque which is displayed on campus.

Our female winner is a young woman who has truly made the most of her Salpointe education.

She has managed to be successfully involved in a wide variety of activities that demonstrate her creativity, leadership and concern for others. She has challenged herself academically and been a varsity athlete, peer mentor, member of STUCO, Racing the Sun, National Honor Society and liturgy committee. She does all of this with perseverance, kindness and a commitment to always do her best. She consistently demonstrates the life skills of resilience and compassion for others and is recognized by her peers, teachers and coaches as someone who truly makes a difference. One of her friends describes her as a “Renaissance woman with a heart.” Our 2022 female Carmelite Medal winner is Jenae Mona.

Our male winner exemplifies true servant leadership and an unparalleled work ethic. Everything he does is with the singular purpose of doing it in the best way possible and he almost always succeeds - whether it is starting his own business, providing needy children with gifts at Christmas, tackling the opponent on the football field or earning straight As. He is a young man who realized at an early age that helping others is a way of celebrating life and expressing gratitude for his own blessings. His quiet sense of humor and authenticity make him a person whom everyone wants to be around. As one friend said, “He is always himself and God is super big in his life. Without him, I wouldn’t even really know about God.” His positive impact on others has been enormous. Our 2022 male Carmelite Medal winner is Davian Miranda Carrasco.

Celebrating Seniors The Salpointe Alumni Council invited the Class of 2022 to a special celebration in April. Seniors enjoyed treats and music, and picked up their Class of 2022 yard signs to proudly display at their homes in celebration of their upcoming graduation.

Salpointe was thrilled to host a number of exciting art shows this year. The first was an exhibit filled with extraordinary art from the Jack and Aline Goodman western art collection. Members of the Friends of Western Art and the Mountain Oyster Club were invited to a reception hosted by Alex ‘05 and Stephanie Lee. Alex is Jack and Aline’s grandson, he has also loaned Salpointe a beautiful western art collection that can be viewed throughout campus.

This year Salpointe produced three main stage productions (Disaster: The Musical, The Man Who Came to Dinner, Little Shop of Horrors) and three one-act performances (Governing Alice, Rockin’ Cinderella: The Musical and Stories That Soar! High!)

Students, alumni, faculty and staff were invited to submit art for inclusion in the anotherPerspective:2021 show in October. Over 50 works were displayed and enjoyed by guests at the opening reception and during Homecoming weekend.

The Cuentos Life Stories Exhibit took place in March and examined the human experience in the personal, cultural, and societal realm through the lens of Tucson artists Ruben Urrea Moreno, Mel Dominguez and Rachel Espinoza. Together and alongside the artwork of Salpointe art students, this body of art highlighted the cross-cultural nuanced depictions of diverse cultural perspectives and emotional evolution through the creative artistic process.

The 2022-23 gallery schedule includes the Dia de los Muertos Alumni/Faculty Art Show in November, Winter Student Art Show in December, Recognizing Abilities Southern Arizona Arts Guild Show in March and Spring Student Art Show in April.

Students participated in state and regional thespian competitions where they were awarded 19 Superior and multiple other ranking positions. Six students were selected to compete in the Montes and four accepted: Luke Williams ’22, Connor Cavett ’23, Kailey Krogstadt ’25 and Chloe Harris ’25.

Salpointe’s Thespian Troupe 5370 was again awarded Gold Honor Troupe status. Thirty-seven students were inducted into the International Thespian Society.

This summer fifteen students attended Nationals, Chole Harris won a national Jimmy Award in New York and six students attended leadership camp. CONGRATULATIONS, LANCER THESPIANS!

Clements Dance Studio Clements Dance Studio is a busy place, home to the Lancer state champion dance team and to a full range of dance classes.

Professional and student-choreographed performances are popular attractions during the fall and spring arts festivals.

Pocono Music Studio The Salpointe Instrumental Music Program theme for the year was “Reaching for Excellence.” In addition to the football games and events on campus, the Lancer Marching Band participated in successful regional and statewide competition. They also returned to the long standing tradition of marching in the Tucson Rodeo Parade after a hiatus from this treasured Tucson event. That very same weekend, Salpointe’s Maroon & Gold Lancer Jazz Band traveled to Northern Arizona University to participate in the NAU Jazz Festival. They brought home two individual soloist awards and an excellent rating. The Jazz Band, Concert and Symphonic Band, percussionists from Drumline and the Salpointe String Orchestra performed at two Salpointe student fine arts festivals. A bright moment in the Spring Fine Arts festival was when all of the instrumental music groups combined and were joined by the Salpointe Concert Choir to perform the Ukrainian National Anthem. The Spring Fine Arts Festival was the just beginning of the synergistic and collaborative arts immersion that was the vision of the Aspire Campaign.

Foundation Choir Studio This was a strong building year for Salpointe choir. Over 50% of students were first year participants and we expect to see our numbers and experiences continue to grow. In addition to performing at all school masses, the choir program presented three diverse concerts that featured choral works spanning five centuries and seven languages. Choir students were recognized with a district superior rating in the Arizona Solo and Ensemble competition and landed roles in the Arts Express production of Oliver! Next year we look to build on these successes and return to the Jazz-Madrigal festival in Flagstaff, a long-standing Salpointe tradition. We are always looking for new choir members. For the first time in two years we hosted our STEM Showcase in person. The theme was “Saving the Wild Wild West.” We had over 59 engineering, programming and science projects displayed at the showcase.

Valencia and Glinski Award Winners The Carlos Valencia Humanitarian Award commemorates the life of Carlos Valencia ’06. We remember Carlos for his courage and strength against all odds. Carlos was a young man of compassion, love, generosity and simple living who lost his battle with leukemia as a student at Salpointe.

The Valencia Award is presented each year to a member of the junior class who possesses great courage and strength, especially in difficult times. Much like Carlos, the recipient goes about life in a selfless manner, understands the true meaning of community and inspires us to think beyond ourselves. Salpointe proudly presented this year’s award to McCallister “Mac” Thomas Tronsdal ’23.

The John Glinski Award commemorates the life of John Glinski ’68. Despite battling cancer upon his arrival at Salpointe, John received his letterman’s sweater and honorary varsity letters in football and baseball from the Salpointe Lettermen’s Club.

The Glinski Award recipient is an exceptional junior football player who shows academic promise, has firm moral convictions and possesses a thirst for life, possibly overcoming obstacles in his own life. Salpointe proudly presented this year’s award to Elias “Bettis” Roberts ’23.

Brian Holstrom, World History teacher

Laudato Si’ Suggests New Lens for Studying World History Written by Fr. William J. Harry, O. Carm., Director, Office of Communications of the Carmelite Order. As published in The Sword (PCM Province) and CITOC (The Carmelite Order’s news service) Among most historians, the traditional approach to studying the history of the world is through the lenses of major figures, political movements, wars, documents, and sometimes religions. Other historians propose using other strategies in order to gain a more complete understanding of our past and therefore an understanding of our present. “Examining what history has been taught and what needs to be taught,” is how Brian Holstrom, a teacher at Salpointe Catholic High School in Tucson, Arizona, captures the shift that needs to take place.

As part of his professional development, Brian proposed attending the 2019 convention of the World Historical Association in Salt Lake City to Salpointe’s school administration. That year’s theme was “Sustainability and Preservation in World History.” So Holstrom wrote a paper entitled The Case for Ecology and the Environment in World History Instruction and submitted it. It was accepted. Other proposed papers talked about the necessity of archives, preserving historical sites and environmental history, but Holstrom’s paper offered something unique, insisting that widespread instruction in environmental perspectives to global history was required to address cultural apathy towards environmental degradation and climate change. “While most history courses remained obsessed with humanity, human interrelations and state-building, students were not being given adequate historical context for humanity’s complex relationships with the environment. Unfortunately, that year’s conference was canceled due to Covid,” explained Holstrom. “However, the journal of the association, World History Connected, picked up my paper and wanted to print it.”

The Association also asked Brian to serve as guest editior and to gather and publish some of the other relevant work from the conference. He sent out an invitation for other historians to make submissions and eight people responded, submitting relevant new scholarship. Those papers, along with Brian’s, then underwent a double-blind peer review by leading scholars in Environmental History. “I was really shocked by the support and excitement to help with our work. Suddenly, I was exchanging emails and feedback with John R. McNeill from Georgetown University, Richard Tucker from the University of Michigan and several other scholars that are among the best in the field.”

In July 2021, the journal issue was distributed and published online. The authors of the other articles and Holstrom presented their works at the annual conference—held online— with Holstrom coordinating the digital participants. His paper as well as his introduction to that issue of World History Connected were discussed.

As part of his research in evaluating world history instruction, Brian concluded that students needed history that was more global, modern and ecological. “Many traditional courses spend a lot of the fall semester on the Roman Empire and medieval Europe. But there is only so much time. You have to make critical choices for content. We still study the Roman Empire, but our course emphasizes modernity and has an increasing focus on ecology, rather than the deeds of each Roman emperor.”

Holstrom’s second major influence on the content he presents in the classroom is Pope Francis’ 2015 encyclical Laudato Si’. In that document, Pope Francis critiques consumerism and irresponsible development, and laments environmental degradation and global warming. The encyclical is a call to people of all faiths to take “swift and unified global action.”

“I read the Pope’s document and I thought something is culturally off. Why are we so apathetic to environmental degradation? I think it’s because many of us don’t receive ecological perspectives of the history of our world,” said Holstrom. “We have mass production and consumption, but we are blinded, or at least distracted, from how the environment is affected. In our historical narratives, nature is typically only recognized as an obstacle or a commodity. As a history teacher, I want to share narratives that keep students mindful of ecology and the environment.”

“The gift of Laudato Si’ for me was feeling a shift in how to look at the study of history,” said Holstrom. “The typical high school curriculum has only the traditional narrative— names and dates of major events taught in a chronological order. It is all people, people, people. It does not view history through the perspective of the environment.

Environmental degradation and climate change have certainly accelerated with industrialization, but we have always had a complex, impactful relationship with the environment. My paper examines why there often exists a cultural aversion to environmental history, why course curricula often avoid the subject, and how world history can be utilized for the positive change in culture that Pope Francis suggests in Laudato Si’.”

As a result of his efforts, in addition to his work with the 2021 annual conference and journal of the World Historical Association, Holstrom was awarded a scholarship named for William McNeill, a pioneer in global history, to participate in the 31st Annual Conference of the World History Association in June in Bilbao, Spain. The theme of the conference is “Distance, Mobility, and Migration.”

Holstrom’s article and the forum he coordinated can be found in World History Connected vol. 18 no. 2, which is digitally available online. Brian continues to teach world history courses at Salpointe Catholic in Tucson.

Salpointe Embraces Laudato Si’ The Care for Creation committee is made up of Salpointe faculty, staff and students who work throughout the year to follow the principles of the Pope’s Laudato Si’ encyclical. Here are some of the highlights from the 21-22 school year: • Development of a campus wide compost system to reduce food waste from the cafeteria during lunchtime and enhance the soil fertility of Salpointe’s garden and campus greenspaces.

• 3R (reduce, reuse, recycle) Challenge - a series of homeroom activities such as a reusable container drive and recycling campaign in a contest to be named the Greenest Homeroom.

• Continued support and interaction with Salpointe’s student Earth Club, including planting and maintenance of the Salpointe garden.

• Earth Week - a week-long celebration of the Earth that culminated in an Earth Day prayer circle on the Salpointe track with invited guest Jerry Carlyle from the San Xavier District of the Tohono O’odham Nation leading the prayer.

• The presentation of the Care for Creation Award to Isabelle Clanfield ’22 in recognition of her outstanding efforts to promote environmental justice, to advocate for lifestyle change and integrate mindful spirituality into her relationship with nature.

Titus Brandsma was canonized on May 15, 2022.

Titus Brandsma was a Carmelite priest, theologian, journalist and author who opposed and spoke out against the anti-Jewish laws being passed in Nazi Germany and occupied nations. “He was arrested when Germany invaded the Netherlands and told that he would be allowed to live a quiet life in a monastery if he would announce that Catholic newspapers should publish Nazi propaganda,” according to a Vatican News report when his canonization was announced Nov. 25, 2021. Father Titus refused and, after being sent to several prisons, he was given a lethal injection in the Dachau concentration camp on July 26, 1942.

The 33rd Salpointe Gala, Moulin Rouge, was held on Saturday, April 9, 2022 at Cathedral Square Center in downtown Tucson. Event Chair Kristin Tomlinson and Vice Chair Meredith Lipscomb, along with their committee, created a spectacular evening of fun and fellowship. Over 250 guests were dazzled by the new venue and greeted by the sounds of the Maroon & Gold Lancer Jazz Band, followed by the sultry tunes of French Cabaret music performed by vocalist Chelsee Hicks and pianist Daniel “Sly” Slipetsky. Partygoers dined on French cuisine, bid on oneof-a-kind items in the silent and live auctions, sipped specialty cocktails, took a chance on the 50/50 raffle and enjoyed student performances by Salpointe choir members. Guests danced and enjoyed socializing late into the night. All of this while supporting the Salpointe Catholic Education Foundation!

The gala raised almost $80,000 to benefit the Lancers. Thank you to the Gala Committee event sponsors, donors and attendees!

K alil R affle Salpointe is grateful to George Kalil† ’56, John Kalil ’70 and Kalil Bottling for their support of the Foundation. The Kalil’s have been donating UA basketball season tickets for 25 years and raised over $460,000 to support the endowment. This year’s lucky winners were Gulshan and Neelam Sethi.

On Sunday, August 29, the Salpointe Parent Association and Salpointe Advancement Team hosted the 19th Annual Lancer Men’s Mass and Breakfast for over 200 Lancer men. Sons, fathers, grandfathers, alumni and friends came together to celebrate mass in the Kalil Family Gym followed by breakfast and program in Foundation Hall. This year’s event featured guest speaker Mr. Tommy Lloyd, UA Head Men’s Basketball Coach. Tommy shared his experiences with recruiting and coaching some of the top international collegiate players and 20 seasons as an assistant coach at Gonzaga University. Event Chair Tom Tronsdal, along with his event committee, planned a morning brimming with prayer, inspiration and community.

David Garwacki won the Arizona State Outstanding American History Teacher contest. The annual award is given by the Daughters of the American Revolution Historian General. Congratulations, David!

Fr. Mike Joyce, O.Carm., was ordained in Darien, IL on Saturday, May 14, 2022.

Fr. Mike served as a Carmelite intern at Salpointe from 2017-2019, working in Campus Ministry, Advancement and teaching theology. Theology Department Head Gail Urbanski and Advancement Director Jennifer Harris attended the ordination on behalf of Salpointe. “When I met and worked with Mike Joyce five years ago, I got to know a young man who was enthusiastic to learn and serve. While discerning his future with the Carmelites, he remained mindful of each step on that journey while being a generous member of the Lancer Community. I was honored and excited to join the Carmelites, as well as Mike’s family and friends for his Ordination in May,” said Gail Urbanski.

Christine Huey, Salpointe Art History teacher, was accepted into Harvard University to earn an Instructional Leadership Certificate.

This certificate will help develop her role of Instructional Coach within Salpointe, which begins this school year.

Brian Holstrom Brian Holstrom, Salpointe History teacher, published an article in World History Connected titled The Case for Ecology and the Environment in World History Instruction.

Brian also served as a guest editor for other articles related to “Ecology and the Environment in World History.” The case study was presented at the World History Association’s annual conference this summer in Bilbao, Spain, and published in the World History Connected journal.

Ericka Quintero Salpointe’s drama teacher, Ericka Quintero, received the 2021 Arizona Thespians Teacher of the Year Award for the South Region. This award is given annually to a teacher who demonstrates courage and devotion to the Performing Arts Program. Congratulations, Ericka!

Financial Aid Changes Lives at Salpointe Certainly each of you reading this issue of Salpointe Today remembers something at Salpointe that made a difference in your life or the life of your child. Whether it was a teacher or coach, Kairos retreat or leadership opportunity, celebrations shared or support given during challenging times, Salpointe is a community that helps students think deeper and reach higher.

Our faculty and staff work tirelessly to provide our students with the best education available, but it is the generosity of alumni, parents, donors and friends who make the holistic Salpointe experience possible for so many of our students. Over 60% of Lancers receive financial aid and would not be able to attend without the assistance they receive from scholarship donations or tax credit contributions. That means that each year 175 Lancers graduate thanks to the faith and generosity of our uniquely caring community.

Salpointe was blessed this year with a number of powerful donations to our Endowed Scholarship Fund. Frank Busch, III ’93 made a $100,000 gift to the Busch Family Scholarship Fund to honor his family and their Salpointe legacy. Frank and his four siblings, Augie ’94, Peter ’97, Molly ’99 and Sam ’02 are all Lancer alumni.

Jeff and Sharon Stevens made a $100,000 gift to the Jeff and Sharon Sayre ’80 Stevens Scholarship Fund to support Lancers in need of financial aid and in honor of the profound impact Salpointe had in the lives of Sharon and her four siblings: Elaine ’82, Paul ’82, Mike ’85 and Steve ’87.

Sharon’s niece and nephews Amy ’07, Joseph ’09, Thomas ’15 and Andrew ’18 are also Lancer grads.

Mickey Ginn ’68 created the $100,000 Mickey and Melissa Ginn Scholarship Fund in honor of his love of Salpointe and his late wife’s passion for education. Mickey, who is a retired mining engineer and outdoor enthusiast, recently visited Salpointe and was wowed by our new Center for the Arts and state-of-the-art STEM Center.

Many of you may remember Michael Bennett, who was a security guard at Salpointe’s Glenn gate and at Kairos retreats. The Salpointe community was saddened when Michael passed away unexpectedly in 2021. This year his family donated $50,000 to establish the Michael Bennett Memorial Scholarship Fund in honor of Michael’s love for Salpointe and the community of Lancers who brought him so much joy.

Gifts to the Salpointe Endowed Scholarship Fund can continue to build for a better future long after we are gone. Through the Carmelite Circle planned giving program, Salpointe is the beneficiary of the estate of David S. (Steve) Chauvin ’66. Steve played trumpet in Salpointe’s band and went on to a successful career in military aviation manufacturing at Rockwell International.

Salpointe’s Scholarship Endowment has a balance of over $5M and the interest supports students who could not otherwise afford to attend Salpointe. As part of the endowment, there have been almost 100 scholarship funds have been named in honor or memory of alumni and loved ones.

You can create a named scholarship fund at any time with a minimum donation of $5000 over three years.

The 1960s A. Terry Bahill ’63, Professor Emeritus, Department of Systems and Industrial Engineering at the University of Arizona, found a new passion for 16th century nautical maps.

He does extensive research to determine the origin and dates the maps were created and published two peer-reviewed papers on his work.

Gilbert Velez ’67 has dedicated his life to helping high school and college students through mariachi music. After graduating from the University of Arizona, Gilbert was one of the four original Changos who formed the original Mariachi Cobre. In 1981, he formed International Mariachi America and has helped countless musicians since.

The 1970s Dr. Millicent Eidson ’70 has retired as a veterinary epidemiologist with the New York State Department of Health after 20 years, following previous work with the New Mexico Department of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). She continues as public health faculty with the University at Albany and

Her public health communication through creative writing was featured on 9/22/21 at Big Blend Radio: Microbial Mystery Author Dr Millicent Eidson on Big Blend Radio - YouTube. Beatriz Cornejo ’92 recently started her own business, BEA-utiful Photography. Beatriz is a Los Angeles-based landscape photographer, whose passion lies in capturing nature’s beauty. When she first stood behind the lens in photography class at Salpointe, she knew that she had found her passion. Mick Dalrymple ’83 was recently named University of Southern California’s first Chief Sustainability Officer (CSO). USC is focusing on prioritizing sustainability and building a greener campus. In addition to overseeing the Office of Sustainability, he will also co-chair Folt’s Sustainability Coordinating Council. Mick’s career in environmental leadership and education spans over 30 years.

Nicholas Bahill ’00 was recently promoted to Master aboard the Roll-on Roll-off cargo ship, Freedom, with American Roll-on Roll-Off Carrier Group (ARC). ARC operates nine ships currently engaged in trades worldwide. After graduating from Salpointe in 2000, Bahill reported to the United States Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, NY where he earned a degree in Logistics and Intermodal Transportation. Upon graduation in 2004, Bahill was commissioned as an Ensign in the United States Navy Strategic Sealift Officer Corps. Bahill began his seagoing career as a Third Officer aboard a civilian crewed military transport vessel the USNS 1st LT Harry L. Martin in 2004. Bahill has continued his career for the past 17 years as a civilian mariner sailing aboard a vast array of vessels including containerships, oil tankers, heavy lift ships, military transports and car carriers.

Robert Mac ’86 recently returned to campus to perform his “Back to School” comedy special for alums. Robert is an award-winning comedian, known for his clever and clean comedy. This event was extra special because it was filmed and will air on Amazon. For more information, visit: robertmac.com

Anne DeBenedetti ’03 earned her Master of Science in Clinical Research degree from Rush University.

Bryce Livingston ’06 was promoted to the rank of Major in the US Army in August. After graduating from Salpointe, Major Livingston continued his education at the US Military Academy and has proudly served his country since.

The 2010s Belen Canto ’11 played soccer at Salpointe and continues to play locally and internationally. Belen competes for the Panama Women’s National Soccer Team.

Outside of soccer, Belen works as a Research Coordinator at the University of Arizona Cancer Center.

Christine Cole ’13 received her BS in Home Products Development in addition to her AAS in Textile Development and Marketing from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. She will be working for F. Schumacher & Co. in Manhattan.
