A Letter from the President Dear Salpointe Lancers, Salpointe is proud to be a Carmelite school and we celebrate this legacy by giving honor to the people who breathe life into our sacred mission. We would not be the school we are today without the dedication of our faculty and staff, the commitment of our boards and committees, the confidence of parents who entrust Salpointe with the education of their children, and the generosity of our donors. As we build the next chapter of Salpointe’s story, we recognize that our narrative is most powerful when Lancers come together as one community to celebrate our traditions, our faith and our vision for tomorrow.

What a challenging ride this 2020-2021 school year has been! The highs are now a part of Salpointe Catholic’s celebratory history: • completing the $10M+ Aspire: Arts Academics Athletics capital campaign and constructing the Stearns Center for the Arts including Stevens Gallery, Clements Dance, Pocono Music, Lopez Visual Arts, Foundation Choir and Corcoran Theater as well as renovating the Kalil Family Gym, Stevens Strength and Conditioning Center, Geddes Wrestling and six renovated classrooms.

• providing five Kairos retreats for over 200 seniors • winning seven state championships in men’s and women’s cross country, women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s soccer, beach volleyball and softball as well as three state championship runners up in women’s basketball, baseball and esports • graduating 287 seniors who are prepared for success as their journey unfolds The lows remain with us as well: • the daily burdens of synchronous in-person and at-home teaching and learning • isolation that limited our ability to pray together, build a sense of community and serve our brothers and sisters • contact tracing and tracking positive COVID-19 cases and requisite quarantines among our student population • helping families who experienced illness, death, job loss and other tragedies over this past year We look forward to 2021-2022 and a return to normalcy: the traditional in-person, on campus, mask free, signature Salpointe experience.

Salpointe continues to lead as a high school of distinction. Congratulations are in order for so many, starting with the Class of 2021. This group of 287 seniors wowed us with their talent, energy and commitment to Lancer values. The members of this class were accepted to 166 colleges and universities across America and earned $21M in merit academic scholarships over four years. Thirtyfour students graduated as Salpointe Scholars with grade point averages of 4.0 or higher.

One Lancer will enter college as a National Merit Finalist, one as a National Merit Commended Student and three as National Hispanic Scholars. Five Lancers will serve in the United States military. All of these Lancers leave us as young adults of character and confidence: they are resilient, proud, respectful, accountable, hopeful and prepared. Thank you, Class of 2021, for bringing high honor to yourselves and to Salpointe!

Our fine and performing arts programs successfully navigated this year of displacement due to construction and the pandemic. This spring’s production of “All in the Timing” was showcased in the junior patio to much applause. Salpointe was awarded top honors by the International Thespian Society, including Gold Honor Troupe for the 22nd consecutive year. Ours was the only marching band in Southern Arizona to perform at 2020 football games. Salpointe’s instrumental music program, including jazz band, concert band and string orchestra, provided an exceptionally entertaining performance at the Aspire dedication event.

A Letter from the Board Chair Dear Salpointe Community,

In visual arts, our 2D and 3D art students nurtured observational art techniques using pastel, watercolor, acrylic and oil paint or recreated famous works of art with items around the house, including kitchen gadgets, pets and siblings. Four seniors were invited to exhibit with the Pima County Public Library and the University of Arizona Museum of Art. Five seniors created theme-based portfolios submitted for College Board Advanced Placement credit.

Salpointe’s nationally accredited STEM program once again participated in Racing the Sun, a state-wide competition sponsored by SARSEF. This year, Salpointe’s standard kart, constructed on a pre-fabricated chassis, won the Grand Challenge Award, the most prestigious honor in the competition, and placed 2nd in Speed and Efficiency. Salpointe’s maker kart, constructed from scratch, won 1st place in Efficiency and 2nd place in Speed and Endurance. Lancer programming students were awarded Emerging Technology micro credentials badges from IBM and our Engineering students participated in Arizona’s State University’s College of Engineering COVID-19 Challenge.

Our Campus Ministry Department provided the capstone Kairos retreat for over 200 seniors during five retreats this spring semester. These God-centered, four-day retreats focus on spirituality and selflessness while stressing the importance of a meaningful encounter with Christ.

By having retreats on campus, both leaders and retreatants learned that Kairos is not about the place, but about the experience of sharing their struggles and successes, and about building lasting relationships. One retreatant noted: “Kairos gave me community, shoulders to lean on, teachers to look up to, and bonds that will last a lifetime.”

The Carmelite fathers and Salpointe’s leadership are grateful to our highly engaged Board of Directors who guide the school to fulfill its mission.

Under the able leadership of Pat P. Lopez III, class of 1974, the Board and its Academic, Advancement, Athletic, Facilities, Finance, Governance, Investment and Strategic Planning committees provide invaluable oversight to all areas of the school.

Finally, we extend gratitude to the Salpointe Catholic Education Foundation board and Salpointe Parent Association board for once again serving the needs of the Lancers. The SCEF works to maintain excellence in education and SPA builds community by hosting welcoming events for our Lancer parents and past parents. We are grateful for their welcoming hospitality and unfailing support!

It is always a great day to be a Lancer and we invite you to join in our pride! You, our Lancer family, are an integral part of Salpointe’s past, present and future.

I suspect that, like me, many of you are looking forward to the future.

The past has taught us that it is impossible to know what the future might hold, so we should all cherish the present. I want to share with you some of those things that we can all cherish about Salpointe right now.

Thanks to many generous donors, we completed construction of the improvements promised by the Aspire campaign. Aspire focused on improving existing spaces and creating new spaces for arts, academics, and athletics. Those facilities will be waiting for our students when they return to campus in August.

Navigating the pandemic has been challenging, but the administration faculty, staff, students and families rose to the occasion. Through a hybrid learning model, Salpointe accommodated both distance-learning and oncampus learning, and we continued to provide students with that unique Salpointe experience. This past school year, we made campus-wide technical improvements to accommodate distance-learning; we implemented health protocols to protect our students, faculty and staff; and during this pandemic, seven Salpointe athletic teams won state championships.

We look forward to the return of all our students to campus this coming academic year. For their safety and the safety of others, we encourage all who can to be vaccinated. Please be aware that vaccination is consistent with Catholic doctrine. If you are interested in learning more about Catholic teachings on vaccination, I urge you to read Moral Considerations Regarding the New COVID-19 Vaccines, which was published by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops and authored by the US Bishops who are the chairs of the Committee on Doctrine and the Committee On Pro-Life Activities.

As Salpointe celebrates seven decades of education, faith and community, we Lancers take great pride in our academically, ethnically and economically diverse student population; stateof-the-art STEM Center; exceptional academic, athletic and artistic programs; signature humanities program; 99% college admission rate; vibrant service learning, campus ministry and student services programs; capacity enrollment; and stable and effective leadership, faculty and staff.

Stevens Strength and Conditioning Center in honor of Paul Sayre ’82, Michael Geddes Wrestling Center, Boesen Story of Salpointe, Carmelite Plaza, Pat Sniezek Wall of Champions, Toole Tirrito Championship Trophy display, Rocco Bene Family Main Stage in Corcoran Theater, the expansion of the Ashton STEM patio as well as the renovation of six classrooms… all to serve the needs of Lancer students today and tomorrow. Our gratitude is forever to you who made this vision possible.

As President Kay Sullivan notes, “But Salpointe can never rest.

We must stay ever present in our mission, setting our sights on the future we are called to create. Our standards are high, but our aspirations are higher!” In 2018 when leadership looked at our ability to provide the holistic education on which Salpointe prides itself, there was still work to be done. We determined that student athletes would be better served by air conditioned facilities and improved field lighting. The STEM program’s success demanded a larger workspace to accommodate more sophisticated projects, and older classrooms needed renovation to increase the number of learning spaces on campus.

Lastly, Salpointe is blessed with incredible artistic talent and programming, but was without facilities that supported arts education and the school’s commitment to the arts as part of our holistic educational model.

During the Aspire Dedication in April, words of thanks and congratulations were shared by many.

And so we launched “Aspire: Arts Academics Athletics.”

After three years, one pandemic and hundreds of generous donors, Salpointe’s future holds nothing but promise as we celebrate the extraordinary facilities created by the $10.1 million Aspire campaign. In April, we proudly held a limited dedication of the transformative, synergistic Stearns Center for the Arts, including Ginny L. Clements Dance, Pocono Music funded by the Toole family, Czarina and Humberto Lopez Visual Arts, Foundation Choir funded by the Salpointe Catholic Education Foundation, Corcoran Theater, Jeff and Sharon Sayre ’80 Stevens Gallery, as well as the Kalil Family Gymnasium, Sayre

Student Body President, Diego Marquez, remarked, “From the bottom of my heart, thank you so much for your contributions.

The student body is immensely grateful. These new, state of the art facilities will help thousands of Lancers develop into tomorrow’s leaders. The new innovations to the school propel the Salpointe promise to educate the entire Lancer, from rigorous academics to excellent extracurriculars.”

Sandy Stearns spoke on the importance of Salpointe’s modern arts facilities and programs in inspiring students to pursue their dreams. Sharon Sayre ’80 Stevens shared her immense gratitude for the Salpointe education that she and her siblings received.

Ginny Clements encouraged others to give back in thanks for the blessings of their Catholic faith. Humberto Lopez stressed the critical importance of education in ending the cycle of poverty.

Finally, Most Reverend Gerald Kicanas, Bishop Emeritus of Tucson, bestowed his blessing on Salpointe. “Brothers and sisters, the work we are blessing today should enliven our faith and make us grateful. We know the familiar words of the psalm: ‘If the Lord does not build the house, in vain do its builders labor.’ Whenever we look to the interests of our students, their families, and all the members of the Salpointe community, and serve them, we are, in a sense, God’s own co-workers. Let us pray for His help.”

Carmelite Medal Winners Madeline Hall ’21 and Jorge Ruiz ’21 received the prestigious Carmelite Medals at the Class of 2021 graduation. The medal is awarded every year to two exemplary Lancers who live our Carmelite values and exhibit excellence in and out of the classroom.

Fr. Paul Henson, O.Carm., described Madeline at graduation as an “extraordinarily gifted young woman, stellar student, accomplished athlete, and an involved member of the community.” Madeline was a Salpointe Scholar, AP Scholar with Honors and a member of the National Honor Society. She also spent many hours volunteering at the VA Hospital and Pima Animal Care Center.

Fr. Paul commended Jorge at graduation for being “a very caring young man who always puts others before himself.” Jorge was a Salpointe Scholar and AP Scholar with Honors while working many hours each week to support his family. Jorge served as a peer tutor, member of the Kino Teens Club and played a vital role in the Horizons Yearbook Club.

Lancer Sisters 2021/2025

The Salpointe Alumni Council and a team of volunteers made sure that members of the Class of 2021 received graduation yard signs to proudly display at their homes in celebration of their many accomplishments over the last four years.

Sophia ’21 and Chloe ’25 Waterfall both received yard signs this spring. Sophia is a graduating senior from the Class of 2021 and Chloe will join the Class of 2025 next fall.

Navigating COVID-19 Together While Apart Expanding Library Resources Swivl Cameras Revolutionize Learning When it became clear that the 2020-21 school year would begin with students learning from home, Salpointe and the Salpointe Catholic Education Foundation invested in Swivl robotic camera technology to provide students with live, synchronous classes. Swivl cameras follow teachers in the classroom as they use Promethean boards, maps and other visual aids to enrich learning, all while facilitating real-time interaction between faculty and students. While there is no substitute for the classroom learning environment, Swivl cameras allowed for dynamic instruction and connection during a challenging year.

Salpointe’s Librarian, Neil Diamante, recognized the need to provide students with additional resources during the pandemic. He identified and obtained a vast assortment of ebooks and textbooks students needed for success during distance and hybrid learning. With restricted access to public libraries in mind, Neil also worked with faculty to prepare lesson plans using resources available right on campus.

A Virtual Mass Experience Celebrating Mass as a community is a vital component of Salpointe’s holistic education. In response to the restrictions on in-person worship, the Campus Ministry Department, like many churches around the world, turned to technology.

Salpointe’s Carmelite intern Br. Filiberto Oregel, O.Carm., mastered the art of live streaming and helped to bring monthly Masses into the homes of Lancer students. Salpointe returned to small inperson Masses in the spring and looks forward to all-school Masses resuming next school year.

Sisters Spread Joy to the Elderly Many senior citizens residing in assisted living facilities suffered this year without visits from friends and loved ones. Lancers Mariam ’22 and Zainab ’24 Rana created beautiful and inspiring greeting cards to help strengthen and lift residents’ spirits through the Pima Love Notes program.

High Achievement in STEM Racing The Sun Crosses The Finish Line It was another outstanding year for Salpointe’s Racing The Sun team! Led by Ms. Cecilia Gossler, STEM students built two solarpowered go karts and raced them against other Arizona high schools at the end of the spring semester. Salpointe’s standard kart, constructed on a pre-fabricated chassis, won the Grand Challenge Award, the most prestigious honor in the competition, and placed 2nd in Speed and Efficiency. Solar Oven Project

Cardboard Canoe Racing

Students in Engineering 102 built solar-powered ovens during the spring semester. These young engineers took cardboard boxes and lined them with aluminum foil, plastic wrap and sheets of black paper to absorb, conduct and radiate enough heat to cook certain foods. On a hot and sunny day, the ovens can produce temperatures as high as 200 degrees! Engineering 102 is a dual credit class in partnership with the University of Arizona’s College of Engineering to help prepare students for future STEM studies.

Engineering students constructed cardboard canoes and raced them in the Carmelite Priory pool next to Salpointe’s campus. Students used cardboard and duct tape to build their boats and raced from one end of the pool to the other using only hand-crafted paddles. It made for a fun, wet and educational engineering experience!

Kairos: Not Merely a Place When the pandemic struck, the 43-year tradition of Kairos retreats had to be put on hold. But Salpointe couldn’t wait until the pandemic was over to resume this beloved tradition. We wanted our graduating seniors to experience the life-changing mystery and opportunity of Kairos.

Salpointe’s long-standing home for Kairos retreats, the Triangle Y Camp in Oracle, AZ, was unavailable due to COVID-19 restrictions and Campus Ministry was forced to consider alternative locations.

The suggestion to host Kairos on Salpointe’s campus was met with uncertainty. “Would Kairos be the same away from the mountain?

Would it feel different on campus?

Would Kairos really work here?”

With limited options and only months before graduation, Salpointe reimagined the retreat setting. Campus Ministry created a warm and welcoming talk room in the recently renovated Geddes Wrestling Center.

evident that Kairos was still Kairos. It worked, even if smiles were covered with masks and hugs were exchanged for elbow bumps.

In February 2021, the first Kairos in almost a year took place. Stories were shared, experiences revealed, friendships formed and hearts softened with compassion.

Kairos is not a place. It never has been. The first three decades of Kairos took Lancers to Regina Cleri Seminary. This year, it brought them to sacred spaces on their own campus.

Kairos is God’s time. That’s what the retreatants and leaders of Kairos 273, 274, 275, 276 and 277 realized this semester. God was present. He was moving in their hearts and working through the complexities of their young lives.

Valencia and Glinski Award Winners The Carlos Valencia Humanitarian Award commemorates the life of Carlos Valencia ’06.

We remember Carlos for his courage and strength against all odds. Carlos was a young man of compassion, love, generosity and simple living who battled leukemia as a student at Salpointe.

The Valencia Award is presented each year to a member of the junior class who possesses great courage and strength, especially in difficult times. Much like Carlos, the recipient goes about life in a selfless manner, understands the true meaning of community and inspires us to think beyond ourselves. Salpointe proudly presented the award to Erin McGuire ’22.

The John Glinski Award commemorates the life of John Glinski ’68. Despite battling cancer upon his arrival at Salpointe, John received his letterman’s sweater and honorary varsity letters in football and baseball from the Salpointe Lettermen’s Club.

The Glinski Award recipient is an exceptional junior football player who shows academic promise, has firm moral convictions and possesses a thirst for life, possibly overcoming obstacles in his own life. Salpointe proudly presented the award to Antonio Martinez ’22.

In Loving Memory Robert P. Lopez ’68, the first recipient of the Glinski Award in 1967 and a Salpointe Sports Hall of Fame inductee, passed away on January 29, 2021. Bob was a beloved member of the Salpointe community and attended the annual Heroes Assembly on campus to congratulate the Glinski Award winner.

Salpointe Scholars The highest academic honor bestowed upon a senior is to be named a Salpointe Scholar. Scholars are students who maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA during their first seven semesters as a Lancer.

New Lancer Tailgate Salpointe welcomed many Lancer families to campus in April for our first-ever New Lancer Tailgate. Class of 2025 families, as well as incoming transfer students, explored Salpointe’s campus, enjoyed a delicious BBQ dinner and cheered on Salpointe’s baseball, softball and lacrosse teams. It was a fun-filled evening and a great chance to meet some of our newest families.

70 Years a Carmelite The Reverend Thomas “Aidan” Butler, O.Carm., is celebrating 70 years as a Carmelite priest and many of those years have been spent in support of all-things Salpointe.

Fr. Tom joined the Carmelites at age 13 when he was encouraged by a nun to attend high school at the Carmelite Seminary in Niagara Falls, Ontario. Fr. Tom was ordained a priest on June 6, 1950, at the age of 24. He is the senior member of the Carmelite Province of the Most Pure Heart of Mary and turned 95 on February 17. Though not quite the oldest Carmelite, Fr. Tom has been a professed Carmelite longer than any other living member.

He served as Salpointe’s Athletic Director from 1956 to 1962 when the Lancers also won many championships. These years were among the highlights of his life. “I had many appointments with the Carmelites,” he said, “but Salpointe was one of the best of them.”

Fr. Tom taught Geometry and Religion at Salpointe, moderated the Lettermen’s Club and coached track and cross country, often running alongside the students. Fr. Tom helped to coach the cross country team to the school’s first League and Division championships in 1956 and still receives letters from the athletes he coached over 60 years ago.

Fr. Tom retired to Tucson in 1998 and, along with his friend Br. Tom Conlon, O. Carm., attended every softball game and prayed with the team before every practice. Fr. Tom was inducted into Salpointe’s Sports Hall of Fame in 1995 and remains one of the Lancers’ greatest fans. “I can’t tell you how moved I was to be named to the Sports Hall of Fame,” he said. “I’ll never forget that experience.”

Salpointe Cares As Lancers inspired by the Carmelite values of prayer, community and service, we have the unique ability to make a positive impact on our community during challenging times. The COVID-19 pandemic caused uncertainty, fear and suffering for many. To help support Salpointe families in need, the Salpointe Advancement Department initiated a mutual aid community, Salpointe Cares, to connect those who needed help with those who were able to provide it.

“Donors fed hungry children, kept the lights on in homes, fixed family cars, helped pay funeral expenses, purchased eyeglasses for visually impaired students, assisted families who lost their homes, paid tuition and so much more,” said Jennifer Harris, Salpointe’s Director of Advancement.

Since April 2020, Salpointe Cares donors have provided more than $60,000 in financial support to Lancer families. And the work continues. Many families still need help. 2020-2021 Lancer Athletic Wrap-Up Salpointe offers a leading athletic program for all student-athletes in a Catholic atmosphere. The school promotes passion, dedication, pride, loyalty, confidence, sportsmanship and competitive spirit.

Salpointe’s tradition of athletic greatness began more than 70 years ago and is the responsibility of every Lancer to maintain. Salpointe believes that the playing fields are extensions of the classroom, places to promote development of the whole person by incorporating Carmelite values, moral leadership and community spirit. This past year, Salpointe athletics brought home an outstanding seven state championships and three state runner-ups. Great job, Lancers!

From daily temperature checks, health screenings, limited fans, and cancellations due to COVID-19, our students made adjustments and thrived. Esports Excels During First Season This past year, Salpointe joined more than 3,000 high schools across the country with an esports team. Esports refers to organized video game competitions that involve collaborative teamwork, communication, sportsmanship and conceptual thinking. The team experienced a remarkable first season, finishing as State Runner-Up in the endof-year tournament!

Salpointe’s esports team is coached by faculty members Amy Ball and Kathy McQuown ’76. Athletes compete in video games League of Legends and Rocket League within the Arizona Interscholastic Association (AIA). The team meets and competes three or four days a week against other Arizona high schools.

Team members Felipe Garcia ’23 and Tyler Bish ’22 were featured in a KOLD News 13 story highlighting the successes of the first year program. Felipe told KOLD that esports helped him greatly during COVID-19 lockdowns and distancing.

“I’m happy the team was formed this year because we didn’t get to see each other as often,” Garcia said. “It’s been a great experience. I got to make some new friends, talk to some old friends, play with them and compete for the school.”

Rylen Bourguet Wins 3 State Titles For many student-athletes, being part of just one state championship team during their four years in high school is a remarkable accomplishment. Rylen Bourguet ’23 was able to pull off the unthinkable: winning three state titles in one year! Rylen competed on the volleyball, soccer and beach volleyball teams, which all won the state championship this past school year.

“I’ve been blessed with amazing coaches for volleyball and soccer, and of course my teammates helped me along the way,” Rylen said. “It’s not a solo act. I wouldn’t be where I am right now without them.” Congratulations, Rylen!

Did You Know?

Wolfgang Weber: A League of His Own Wolfgang Weber, longtime head coach of men’s soccer, is in a league of his own.

After leading the Lancers to their 8th state championship in school history this past spring, Weber notched career victory 699 in the final match of the season. No other soccer coach in Arizona history has eclipsed 500 wins, according to the Arizona Daily Star’s Greg Hansen, yet Weber continues to humbly lead the Lancer program both on and off the pitch. Next season will be Weber’s 40th year coaching at Salpointe.

“I’m just a blessed person to have this great group of kids and a great coaching staff,” Weber said following the team’s 5-1 victory in the state championship. “It’s all about the team.”

Every Salpointe team that wins a state championship is enshrined into the Sports Hall of Fame. Being inducted into the Hall of Fame is a lifetime achievement and the highest honor Salpointe can bestow upon a team.

Sports Hall of Fame Salpointe’s Sports Hall of Fame was founded in 1993 with the purpose of recognizing and honoring great student-athletes and championing individuals who have motivated others to set lofty goals, foster pride, preserve sportsmanship and encourage scholarship and good citizenship.

The next Sports Hall of Fame Induction will be held in fall 2022. The deadline to submit a nomination is January 10, 2022.

The SCEF Lancer Luau, a newly imagined fundraising event, was held on Saturday, March 27, 2021 in the Glenn parking lot on campus. Over 120 cars of guests were greeted by the sounds of island melodies and the bright colors of floral leis and orange traffic cones. Guests enjoyed a to-go Hawaiian dinner of smoked kalua pork, honey citrus glazed chicken, pina colada rice and pineapple upside down cake. Event sponsors were delighted with their Luau gift baskets filled with tiki glasses, rum, mai tai mix, pineapples, island party decor and more! From the comfort of their homes, Luau goers watched a pre-recorded video featuring gratitude from Kay Sullivan and Timothy Harris ’87, Foundation President, along with a special Salpointe Choir performance of “Hawaiian Roller Coaster Ride.” The night ended with the long-awaited announcement of the three specialty raffle basket winners.

Farewell to Salpointe Employees Ms. Jeanette Apaez-Gutierrez Ms. Apaez-Gutierrez will leave Salpointe after 10 years to become an assistant principal at University High School.

In addition to teaching all levels of Spanish at Salpointe, Jeanette served as a campus minister, National Honor Society co-moderator and Kairos leader. She will greatly miss the sense of community at Salpointe and the many collaborative experiences with students.

Ms. Daniela Ayala Ms. Ayala departs Salpointe after three years as a Science teacher. Daniela will continue her teaching career at the Arizona College of Nursing as a professor. She says the students and colleagues with whom she worked at Salpointe made her three years a true blessing.

Mr. Thomas Benton Mr. Benton served as a Geometry and Physics teacher over the last four years at Salpointe. He also assisted the Racing the Sun team, which builds solar powered go karts and races against other Arizona high schools. Thomas says he will miss seeing all of his students and colleagues as he moves back to North Carolina to continue teaching and be closer to his parents.

Mr. Scott Evans Mr. Evans will leave Salpointe this summer after 12 years in the counseling department, most recently serving as the Director of Counseling and Freshman Class Counselor. His next journey will be at a local non-profit educating families about “school choice” in Arizona. He will greatly miss his colleagues but is happy to continue as Salpointe’s varsity women’s golf coach.

Mr. Tucker Gregor Mr. Gregor worked the last two years as a Theology teacher at Salpointe. He is looking forward to beginning the doctoral program in Religious Studies at the University of Iowa, where he will research lived religion, anthropology of morality and gender/sexual theory. Tucker says he will miss working with Salpointe’s remarkable students and witnessing their intelligence, compassion and resilience in the face of adversity.

Ms. Allison Woods Holstrom ’03 Ms. Holstrom spent the last two years at Salpointe working as the 504 Coordinator. She will miss her daily interactions with the staff and students, whom she calls “the kindest teenagers you will ever find.” Allison plans to pursue a new career as a doula and photographer while spending time with her growing family.

Ms. Kara Kohnke Ms. Kohnke helped guide Salpointe’s administration over the last year during the COVID-19 pandemic as the school nurse. Kara shared her expertise and worked to keep our community safe and healthy. She will be returning to her previous position at Casa de los Ninos to work with Nurse Family Partnership.

Ms. Johanna Lockhart Ms. Lockhart taught a variety of CTE classes during her three years at Salpointe, including Financial Literacy, Law, Marketing and Entrepreneurship. Johanna says she is forever proud of being part of the Lancer community. She will miss seeing the smiles of her students and the unwavering support and encouragement from her peers.

Ms. Cindy Mash Ms. Mash has worked tirelessly over the last 15 years while serving as Salpointe’s administrative assistant in campus ministry (six years) and, more recently, the executive assistant to the principal (nine years). Cindy is retiring and looking forward to traveling and spending more time with her family.

She says she will greatly miss her daily interactions with friends on campus.

Ms. Lynn Ossowski Ms. Ossowski departs Salpointe after an incredible 31 years. She served in a wide variety of roles, including college counselor, French teacher, Kairos director and more. Lynn will continue to assist high school students with the college process as a private college admissions consultant. She will greatly miss her interactions with the students every day, their experiences with God on Kairos retreats, and the colleagues she has worked alongside over the last three decades.

Br. Stephan Rochefort, O.Carm.

Br. Stephan will continue his Carmelite priesthood journey after two years as an intern at Salpointe.

He spent his first year on campus working within the Campus Ministry department and taught Theology this past year. His next step will be in Washington, D.C., as he completes his Masters of Divinity. Br. Stephan says he will always be impressed with the dedication shown by the Salpointe faculty and staff. “I remember coming home on my first day of orientation and telling the Carmelite brothers that Salpointe was the first place I’ve ever worked where everyone genuinely seemed like they wanted to work there,” he said.

Ms. Laura Sorci Ms. Sorci taught Algebra II and Geometry at Salpointe for four years. After giving birth to her daughter, Abigail, in early January, Laura decided to take a step away from teaching and be a full-time mother. She says she misses seeing all of her wonderful students and colleagues at Salpointe and hopes to return one day.

The News and Notes of Lancer Alumni

The 1950s Kate McGough Schuff ’55 is an art collector.

Salpointe sweethearts from the Class of 1957 celebrated over 61 years of marriage.

Congratulations to Bob and Joan Carlucci Stapleton and Dick and Carmine Cavaliere Adamcin. The Stapletons live in Tucson and the Adamcins in Chula Vista, CA.

The 1960s Jim Magner ’60 recently published two historical fiction novels titled “The Dead Man on the Corner” and “John Dillinger and Geronimo: The War in Skeleton Canyon,” both of which are set in the Tucson area. In addition to writing novels, Jim has written an art column for “Hill Rag,” a Capitol Hill newspaper since 2002 and is also a painter with works in private, corporate and government collections.

Fr. John Lyons ’65 was bestowed with the papal honor of Chaplain to His Holiness with the title of Reverend Monsignor.

Msgr. Lyons retired from his most recent position as pastor of St. Thomas the Apostle Parish in Tucson after 11 years of service.

The 1970s Ricardo Moreno ’78 was named the head athletic trainer at Chandler Gilbert Community College.

The 1980s Joseph Rodgers ’80 has been breaking down barriers to ballet for children in South Tucson through his business Dancing in the Streets Arizona. The dance school provides students of all incomes, abilities, ages and experiences a place to learn ballet.

William Campbell ’87 served as the music composer for the film Hunger Ward, which received a 2021 Oscar nomination under the “Documentary: Short Subject” category. William is an accomplished composer, performer and teacher, whose music may be heard over radio stations, at conferences and festivals, in concert halls, faith communities, movie theaters, dance and dramatic events. He was inducted into Salpointe’s Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame in 2011.

The 1990s Hestia Lei ’90 joined T-Mobile as Head of Strategic Programs & Operations in early 2020. She is responsible for driving video experience and engagement initiatives within the new T-Mobile/Sprint enterprise. Most recently, she was at Sony PlayStation Vue building a better world with OTT (Over The Top) content and device partnerships. Hestia resides in Los Angeles, CA with her husband and son.

Bryan Hannley ’91 and Elizabeth Dorsey Bollinger ’92 collaborated between their two organizations to provide scholarship funding to future nurses in Tucson. Bryan is the Board Chair of the Pima Community College Foundation and Elizabeth is the Executive Director of the Catholic Foundation.

Mary Wood ’94 owns a fun and refreshing food truck in Tucson called BlackJack Citrus Infusions.

Mary makes her own simple syrups and looks to local flavors and flavors from Mexico to make her lemonade pop. Among her drink selections, you’ll find lemonade flavored with prickly pear, jalapeño, mango and tamarind. In addition to BlackJack, Mary recently returned to work at Salpointe as the Spirit Store Manager.

Amy Brandhuber ’95 is the Program Supervisor for Pima County’s Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) Program which provides foster children with one-onone advocacy and mentorship. Amy was appointed to two national leadership councils.

Jodi Bartley Eastberg ’95 was promoted to the Dean of Professional and Graduate Studies at Alverno College in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She will oversee the Education, Business, and Communication Departments as well as all of their graduate programs.

Jennifer Kinkade ’95 was appointed Director of Operations of Clique Studios, a custom digital design company based in Chicago. Previously, she worked as the Senior Project Manager and Operations Lead over her four years with the company. After graduating from Salpointe, Jennifer studied creative writing and earned her Master’s in educational psychology. She taught English for 11 years before joining Clique Studios.

Dr. Tad DeWald ’97 is a fellowship-trained non-surgical sports medicine physician working at Tucson Orthopaedic.

He has used orthobiologics and regenerative medicine procedures to treat patients for the last eight years.

Courtney Wright Castoro, M.D. ’98 was recruited to Providence Anesthesiology Associates, P.A. in Charlotte, NC, during her fellowship in Cardiothoracic Anesthesia at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. During her first two years at the practice, she was selected as the Cardiac Anesthesiology Section Chief and was voted partner in July 2020. As a junior partner, she drafted numerous enhanced recovery after surgery protocols, including a mastectomy pathway, which improves recovery and decreases postoperative pain and patients undergoing mastectomies and currently serves on the advisory board drafting a recovery pathway for her cardiac surgical patients. During the COVID-19 crisis, Courtney and her fellow physicians were instrumental in securing PPE for staff at the hospital and developed protocols aimed at keeping patients and clinicians safe.

Courtney is double-boarded in both anesthesiology and transesophageal echocardiography.

Marisol Quiroz ’98 earned her Ph.D. from the University of Arizona College of Education.

The 2000s Jeffrey Sklar ’00 was appointed to the Pima County Superior Court by Governor Doug Ducey.

Jeff is a partner at Lewis Roca Rothgerber Christie, where he has been a commercial litigator since 2010.

Alison Prendergast Harvey ’01 and her husband Dylan are the new owners of the Philabaum Glass Gallery. Tom Philabaum, past Salpointe faculty, and his wife Dabney retired in October after opening the gallery 38 years ago. Alison and Dylan have three young children who all came to the gallery as babies.

Matt Martin ’02 is an Alderman in Chicago, IL, and was named to Chicago’s 40-Under-40 List.

Alexander Ball ’07 was elected Justice of Peace in Pima County during the 2020 election. He began his 4-year term on January 1, 2021. Alex has spent the last seven years working in the federal courts system after graduating college with a Bachelor in Economics and a Master of Business Administration (MBA).

Emma Darlington Munsch ’07 was named the new head coach of Tucson Ford Dealers Aquatics, a silver medal swim club in Tucson.

The 2010s McKenna Ronquillo Schray ’10 earned her Ph.D. in Higher Education Leadership from Seton Hall University.

Jacob Arzouman ’11 graduated from Pima College’s Public Safety and Emergency Services Institute. Jacob was his class salutatorian and will be working with Northwest Fire District as a paramedic.

Ben Richmond ’11 was promoted to Associate Director of the Community Engagement Core at the Southwest Environmental Health Science Center. Ben manages programs for tribal communities and youth, working towards environmental health literacy and risk communication.

Lisa Le ’13 completed her Doctor of Pharmacy in May 2021 from the University of Arizona College of Pharmacy.

Melissa Bohnert ’14 is pursuing her Ph.D. in Sociology at Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland. Her research study, “Emerging Digital Generations,” published in August, discusses the effects of screen time on the mental health of children.

Regis F. Wiegand ’14 patented his design called Kitty Cure, the creative alternative to declawing cats and a litter box pet-i-cure system.

Alexa Colette Keith ’15 graduated from the University of Chicago and worked as an Editorial Researcher for David Axelrod and his “Axe Files” series. Alexa is now working in the White House as a researcher in the Office Of Presidential Personnel.

Alec McCall ’17 graduated Summa Cum Laude from Arizona State University with a degree in biomedical engineering that includes two minors in chemistry and business. He has accepted an offer to pursue his Ph.D. in biomedical engineering at Brown University under a fully-funded research position.

Carli Orcutt ’18 was named a Scholastic All-American by the Women’s Collegiate Gymnastics Association. Carli is in her third year of gymnastics with the San Jose State Spartans. She was also recognized as a 2020 Scholar-Athlete by the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.
