CONGRATULATIONS!
Greeting from the RIPR Radu Popescu
I am very happy to address you on the occasion of the first district newsletter issuing.
Dear friends, we had a wonderful Rotarian year 2021 –2022. After the September 2021 meeting in Prague with PRIP Shekhar Mehta, where he promised us that if we would reach the 1100 members, we’ll get the approval for a RI District covering Albania and Kosovo. There were fantastic efforts and a lot of dedication from all of you and we reached the figure at the beginning of April 2022.
Congratulations! Based on your membership activity, and my reports to the Rotary International Districting Committee and to the Rotary International Board, we had the approval to start the organizational activity for the new RI District 2485, effective from 01.07.2024. The decision was taken during the RI Board meeting on 02.06.2022. A great day for all of us. We all must be proud for this achievement which brings Albania and Kosovo to the same status as all other Rotarian countries in the world.
As you can see, I use “WE” and “US”. This is because I consider myself part of you, we are all Rotarians linked by the Rotarian friendship, the service to the communities and the dream of a better and peaceful world.
.
The 02.06.2022 represents a milestone, but we must continue our activity until reaching the final goal: a functional and strong district. We must continue the membership development based on the main quality requirements, we must educate the new Rotarians, and not only, regarding the principles which are governing us, we must develop the friendship at the district and international levels, we must cooperate and bring our vocation to the Rotary service.
More than 60% of the Rotarians in Albania and Kosovo are new members with less than one year. They need information and they must be involved in the Rotarian life in the proper and sustainable way. Their retention is important to all of us.
Considering all these, I am inviting you to attend the training seminars on 07-09.10.2022 in Gjilan, Kosovo. They are dedicated to all of you. Here, some of the District Committee members will do all their best to transfer to you the most important information regarding our present and future activity in Rotary.
Our family talent pool is growing.
We're proud to have 2 new doctors, 2 designers and a lawyer!

September 2022
Recently, Nick and I spent time in Guatemala, where we met wonderful fellow Rotary members and families who unofficially adopted me as “Tía Jennifer.” On the third day, after visiting Patzún in the mountainous western highlands, we set out for Lake Atitlán, which we needed to reach by nightfall.
If we took a back road we could get there faster. Locals told us it had just been repaved and assured us, “You’ll have no problem.”
At first, it was a breeze. We wound through misty-green coffee and corn fields covering the hillside like a patchwork quilt. But at a river crossing, we found a bridge washed away. The only way to continue would be to ford the river in our small bus. There were a few tense moments, but we decided to give it a try and, thankfully, we made it across safely.
This adventure reminds me of two important truths in Rotary. One, we rely on local, on-the-ground expertise to do what we do best. And two, sometimes you have to take uncomfortable chances to reach important goals.
Every day, I am honored to learn from our Rotary family. Every lesson is an opportunity to grow, and each story adds a chapter to our collective Imagine Rotary year.
August 2022
We’ve all taken our own path to become a member of Rotary. Some of you joined because your father was a Rotarian. Some of us signed up because an employer tapped us on the shoulder and asked us to attend a meeting. Others became members only after a U.S. Supreme Court ruling made it possible. Yet each of us entered through one mechanism an invitation.
An invitation that unlocks our imaginations and allows us to know that everything and anything is possible. Each one of us has that same opportunity the honor to extend an invitation.
Our family talent pool is growing.
We're proud to have 2 new doctors, 2 designers and a lawyer!

PRESIDENTIALMESSAGE
Jennifer Jones President 2022-23
It is awe-inspiring to imagine how we can look out across our communities and identify our future leaders. It’s often tempting to attract people who are exactly like us. It’s a special form of ingenuity to consider how people who are seemingly very different can, in fact, share our values and have some of those same talents, just waiting to be unleashed.
It’s time for Rotary to take our next step in advancing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) across our organization. Embracing an experience where people feel included is more than just making our membership numbers more diverse. It’s about making our meetings and events places where we can speak openly and honestly with each other, where our members feel welcome and safe. This means removing barriers for entry and opening doors for inclusion. Our values remain our strength and our commitment to excellence requires us to maintain high standards for our members as well.
I believe we are all committed and determined to advancing DEI across Rotary. This is rooted in the deepest traditions of our organization, and it will ensure that we remain vibrant and relevant for decades to come.
IA few years ago, our Rotary Board set the ambitious goal of increasing the share of female members to 30 percent by 2023. We have less than a year to go, but I believe we can meet and exceed this target.
We need Rotary leaders to rise from every continent, culture, and creed. We need young members and young thinkers to take on larger roles and responsibilities. We need to listen to new Rotary members just as keenly, and with as much respect, as those with many years of membership.
During our recent convention in Houston, we heard from astronauts about their journeys into space. We reflected upon a time in the 1960s when U.S. President John F. Kennedy urged the world to dream, with his declaration that we would “go to the moon [and do] other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard.”
Fully committing Rotary to DEI and meeting our ambitious membership targets may seem as unlikely as a moon shot. But I know that when people of action are committed to a big goal, we make it worth every ounce of our energy.
Our family talent pool is growing.
We're proud to have 2 new doctors, 2 designers and a lawyer!

July 2022
Every month since I joined Rotary, I’ve looked forward to reading this magazine, especially the opening essay from our Rotary president. I’ll admit that as much as I appreciate a digital copy, I still revel in the tactile sensation of sitting down and leafing through the glossy pages. They are a treasure trove of photos and memorable stories about our great organization the one we all know and love. I have learned so much over the years about service projects and lives that each of you have transformed.
As a communications professional, I have longed for the day that our stories were a regular part of mainstream media and that our flagship magazine might populate doctor’s offices, coffee shops, or anywhere else people sit, wait, and browse. It’s great that Rotary members are better informed about all we do, and wouldn’t it be that much better if more people knew our stories.
All this was top of mind as I thought about our plans for promoting Rotary worldwide in the upcoming year. Over the next 12 months, we are going to shine a light on projects that put Rotary service on display to the world, and we are going to do it strategically. Nick and I will focus on some of the highest impact, sustainable, and scalable Rotary projects from our areas of focus in what we call the Imagine Impact Tour.
We are inviting top-tier journalists, thought leaders, and influencers to use their channels to help us raise awareness by reaching people who want to serve but have not yet realized they can do it through Rotary. But there was another important issue to consider — our carbon footprint. I take seriously Rotary’s emerging leadership position on environmental issues. The example set by our members during the pandemic is fundamental to how we carve out our future.
That means we will harness digital technology to tell these stories — we will be tweeting, posting, and “going live” to anyone who will listen. We must consider our environment, and part of that means not always traveling but continuing to connect in meaningful ways as we have for the past two years. Of course, we are social people, and we still need to be together. We simply need to be more mindful of our decisions and think about how we get together just a little bit differently. For example, if we travel to visit a project, we will plan successive visits in neighboring areas. So, what are your stories and who can help tell them? I hope you might consider your own Imagine Impact efforts your story might be something you can promote just as easily on social media or during a Zoom call. Think about ways to showcase notable projects in your clubs and districts.
We all feel the impact that Rotary service and values have on us. Now it’s our opportunity to share that feeling with others.

1STANNUALDISTRICTCONFERENCE
Pristina, Kosovo, June 10-12 2022
This Rotary year was quite special, because we crossed the borders and achieved the biggest goal of having the Albanian-speaking District in the big Rotary family, District D53 & D55 (D2485).
Today we count over 1200 Rotarians, a great achievement thanks to the commitment of every Rotarian. This increase in Rotary membership is hope for a better future, strengthening of civil society and contribution beyond oneself to the common good.
This conference also enabled the meeting of Rotarians from different countries such as Kosovo, Albania, Romania, Israel, North Macedonia and beyond who created friendly relations and started initiatives for joint projects between them.
The conference was successfully concluded, with Rotarians pledging to increase their impact with more community projects, cooperation between Rotary clubs within our district, and further membership growth.

1STANNUALDISTRICTCONFERENCEGREETEDBYPMALBINKURTI
Pristina, Kosovo, June 10-12 2022
The Prime Minister of the Republic of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, has participated in the District Conference of Rotary Clubs in Kosovo and Albania, which have started the procedures for the establishment of the Rotary District covering Kosovo and Albania.
"Kurti welcomed the establishment of the District and said that he hopes that this district will serve as an even greater opportunity to increase the intensity and effectiveness of the mission of Rotarians, which is service and assistance to the community through the promotion of peace, the fight against diseases , provision of clean water, care for the environment, support for education and those in need, as well as assistance in the development of local economies", as stated in the government's press release.
The Prime Minister has spoken about serving - as the commonality of Rotarians with government officials.
"Even we as politicians are at the service of others. Because even the word minister in its etymology from Latin meansservant, it means servant. Prime Minister, you are the first among the servants", he said and added that "while Rotarians are working every day to serve the community,
we as the Government, through our policies, are aiming at the same objectives, where through various measures we are helping those who need it the most".
The Prime Minister has assessed the work of Rotarians as a valuable asset for society and, as he said, also the fulfillment of the human mission, which is to improve the well-being of all citizens, regardless of religion, gender, age, ethnicity, or background.

ROTARYCLUBPEJAINAUGURATESTHE9/11"MEMORYANDFRIENDSHIP" MEMORIAL
We are gathered today to fulfill our collective promise to Never Forget, to take part in active remembrance, and recognize how we are all connected to one another underneath the same big sky.
Two decades have passed from September 11th, 2001, a new generation has been born and grown up, 9/11 is no longer just an experience lived, but history learned. Many things have happened, both in our personal lives and in the world around us, and yet at the same time, 9/11 still feels like yesterday. We only have to mention the date, and people instantly flash back to that date in 2001, 21 years ago. History will always be divided into the world before 9/11 and after it.
New York City is almost 7,400 Km far away from Peja, but on that particular day, September 11th, 2001, it felt closer, because tragedy unites people. Today an authentic steel beam from the Twin Towers is in Peja, in this memorial and it will always stay here, to remember the tragic loss of innocent lives and to remind us of the connection between our two nations.

ROTARYCLUBPEJAINAUGURATESTHE9/11"MEMORYANDFRIENDSHIP" MEMORIAL
Today, Rotary Club of Peja is inaugurating the memorial “Memory and Friendship”, and we are proud to have built the first Memorial in Southeast Europe with an authentic steel beam from the Twin Towers, donated by the New York Fire Department. We appreciate Mr. Carl Scheetz and the Fire Department of New York, Municipality of Peja, ELSA Group, Immigrand Studio and all those who have contributed to build this unique memorial that will further strengthen the friendship between Kosovo and the United States of America.
Today, we pause to reflect on the barbaric attacks that took place on 9/11 and to remember the victims, almost 3,000 people from more than 90 countries who lost their lives at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and in rural Pennsylvania. Today, we remember the emergency workers, police and firemen who still bare the physical and mental scarce of that day. But, there is a lesson learned from that day: we learned from this tragedy that life is short and there is no time for hate. We owe it to the victims of 9/11, to the veterans and to our future generation to continue protecting our way of life, so that evil will never triumph.
God Bless America and God Bless Kosovo! Thank you!

“TREEOFKNOWLEDGE”PROJECT
Project by Rotary Club Tirana International
Rotary Club Tirana International hit the ground running this year with a legacy project – the Tree of Knowledge project aiming to support elementary schools in nearby communities. The first school served on this mission was Marie Kaçulini located in the city of Durres in collaboration with the school’s teacher Ms Aida Haxhiu.
The Club donated 21 tree-like bookshelves installed in each classroom and over 600 books of Albanian and world classic literature for children of ages between 6-11 years old. The books were selected from the list of approved children literature by the Ministry of Education. The project will likely be there to serve the school's community for generations to come.
RCTI aims to extend this project into other public schools and reach more students. It is a small gesture, but the impact has gone a long way from the feedback we get from teachers and students.
Pictured are RCTI Rotarians Zajmira Qeraxhiu, Florjan Salaj and Marenglen Biba participating in the event organized by the school on Children's day to celebrate together the successful finalization of the project.

ACTIVITY OF RC GJILANI ON WORLD HEART DAY
On World Heart Day, the Rotary Club "Gjilani" held an awareness activity to protect citizens' health.
The president of the Gjilani Rotary Club, Fadil Rrahmani, has said that they have decided to celebrate this activity in order to make citizens aware of how to protect their health.
Meanwhile, cardiologist Besim Guda has congratulated the Rotary Club for this awareness campaign about health and heart problems.
"I believe that this campaign is very important and useful for preserving the health of our citizens. The main and most important thing is prevention, so that diseases do not appear", said Dr. Guda.
The activity included the measurement of blood pressure and glycemia, while leaflets were distributed to citizens on what is heart failure, what are the risk factors, complaints, why should heart failure be treated, the procedures and duration of treatment and follow-up controls.
The Mayor of the Municipality of Gjilan, Alban Hyseni, on World Heart Day, joined the awareness activity in the center of the city, organized by the Rotary Club "Gjilani", which aims to protect the health of the citizens and to prevent various diseases.

"Today I joined the activity to mark the International Heart Day and after the check-up by the doctor I realized that my heart is fine and thankfully the signs are that I will live long. The important thing is that the Rotary Club in Gjilan and the health professionals are continuing to contribute for the good of society, where we are calling and trying to educate them as much as possible about the heart, while its preservation and care is extremely important. "Prevention means that we will live healthier and better", said Mayor Hyseni.

TWINNING OF RC GJAKOVA-ÇABRATI AND RC SHKODRA
The twinning of Rotary Clubs fosters genuine cooperation between the two cities.
At the end of September 2022, these two sister cities, Gjakova and Shkodra, were officially twinned.
They are extremely similar to each other in many aspects such as intellectual, artistic, educational, and patriotic without leaving aside geographical and historical aspects and in particular the economic and cultural cooperation over the centuries.
Therefore, the twinning of our two cities was not only an honor to Shkodra and Gjakova, but to all Albanians wherever they are.
This twinning was initiated by the Rotarians of both cities, where in addition to the twinning of the cities, they also formalized the twinning of the respective Rotary clubs, RC Shkodra and RC Gjakova-Çabrati.
This success was marked with an evening of music from Shkodra and Gjakova, returning to the roots that make us feel proud of who we are, but also oblige and encourage us to preserve this heritage between generations, to work diligently for our community and raise values on the pedestal.

OCTOBER: MONTH OF ECONOMIC AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT
By Dr. Neshad Asllani, RC Peja
Rotary is a wonderful organization
Each month - Special focus
October is Economic and Community Development month
Rotary supports investment in people by improving their incomes and creating sustainable and long-term economic development in the community.
Rotary's contribution begins in the community, and each community has unique needs and concerns. While we serve in a variety of ways, we focus on Seven Key Areas to maximize our impact. These areas encompass some of the world's most critical and widespread humanitarian needs. Rotarians planning new service projects are encouraged to consider these areas and the many opportunities for innovative projects within them. Rotary International and The Rotary Foundation have adopted Seven Key Areas as priorities in their organizational action:
• Peace and conflict prevention/resolution
• Disease prevention and treatment
• Water and sewerage
• Mother and child health
• Basic education and literacy
• ECONOMIC AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT
• Environmental support
Economic and Community Development is a key area that Rotary has suggested all clubs focus on, especially during the month of October. Today, close to 1.4 billion people – nearly half of them employed – live on less than $1.25 a day.
What projects and activities will your Rotary club develop during the month of October? There are countless ways Rotary clubs can address these issues both locally and internationally. You can find some of these ideas below:
OCTOBER 2022 | ISSUE NO. 1
OCTOBER: MONTH OF ECONOMIC AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT
By Dr. Neshad Asllani, RC Peja
• Expanding vocational education opportunities, including employment programming, in local non-profit organizations
• Professional training to teach business leaders in communities how to create a business plan and maintain accurate financial accounting.
• Providing equipment and other tools for a company to increase production and sales in the domestic market
• Supporting the development of small businesses in the community. The success of local business leaders can multiply employment opportunities in the community.
Dear Rotarians, each calendar month is celebrated in Rotary with a different theme. Each Rotary Club worldwide is encouraged to focus on promoting the program and theme in each month.
By celebrating each month and using these themes as a guide, we can ensure that all Rotary programs are administered throughout the year.
