Stories bind us together. But how does that account change as bits are left out and pieces are added in? In this collage workshop you will practice constructing narrative-based works by experimenting with the scale of objects, composition, and color schemes. No prior experience is necessary to attend. April is Poetry Month and this 4-session class will be centered around creative writing with an introduction to letterpress and bookbinding. For truly adventurous students who enjoy writing, they should plan on bringing in 1-3 of their short poems. For those students who love poetry but do not write your own, fear not, bring in 1-3 selections by your favorite poet. We will look at artist books for inspiration and discuss several bookbinding techniques that will aid in the student designing, printing, and binding their own artist book based on the poem selected. Students will utilize the accordion or Japanese stab bindings for books with either a hard or soft cover. A basic assortment of the teachers favorite book arts and printmaking materials will be provided, if a student has a complicated design in mind and requires specific materials they must source them, such materials might include book cloth, leather, certain colors or specialty papers, specific binding materials. The Japanese stab binding allows for loose-leaf pages to be bound together and is designed to showcase intricate sewing patterns along the spine. This class will explore options for binding up soft-cover stab options. Students will walk away with a beautiful book, in which they can tuck in photographs, or use as a notebook/sketchbook.

We will explore the different types of polaroid cameras available, how to find them, and the basics of how to use them. We will go over a few of the rules of the road with these cameras and set out to the streets of Frederick to try them out. All you need to do is sign up, FBAC provides the polaroid camera to use for the class, instruction, AND film in the cost of the workshop. You will have a fun day exploring this old school medium and walk away with your new treasures and hopefully a desire to continue working with this amazing camera. No experience is necessary. Safe @ Home by Safe Sitter is a program designed to prepare students in grades 4-6 to be safe when they are home alone and need to care for themselves when parents are away for short periods of time. You will learn how to practice safe habits, how to prevent unsafe situations, and what to do when faced with dangers such as power failures or weather emergencies, assessing and responding to injuries and illnesses. Course includes snack and all materials.
