FIREFLY WATCH CITIZEN SCIENCE TRAINING Learn the secrets behind firefly flashes, including how to decode who’s signal. YOGA FOR HIKERS Yoga for hikers is a gentle, restorative practice designed to target problem areas specific to hikers. By improving strength and flexibility in the knees, feet, back, and legs, students will learn poses and techniques that will sooth sore areas and prevent future injuries common to hikers. Weather permitting, the class will be outdoors so participants are encouraged to bring sunscreen, sunglasses, bug spray, and plenty of water. This class is designed for all levels of experience and beginners are welcome as well as seasoned yogis. We will meet at the Catoctin Creek Nature Center building and take a short hike to the meadow. REIKI -LEVEL 1 Reiki is a Japanese technique that treats the body, emotions, mind and spirit. CRYSTAL REIKI Crystal Reiki is a method of the use of crystals in combination with the channeling of Reiki to stimulate the self-healing mechanisms of the mind, body and spirit. Crystals are believed to have been used for healing for thousands of years by many ancient cultures. Modern Reiki healing dates from the re-discovery of Reiki by Mikao Usui in Japan in the 1890's. Students will learn how to infuse crystals with Reiki energy and work with crystal grids. Requirements; Please dress comfortably and bring a pendulum. INTRO TO WETLAND ECOLOGY Why should the kids have all the fun? This intro course is intended for the nonprofessional adult who is interested in “getting their feet wet”. We’ll begin in the Nature Center with a brief overview of basic wetland ecology and the many ecosystem services provided by wetlands. We’ll discuss key character-istics used to delineate wetlands and then head out into the field to practice our wetland ID skills. Dress for the weather/wet conditions and bring a bottle of water. BIRD WALK WITH BIRDS UNLIMITED Discover the wild bird populations at our Nature Centers with our local experts from the Wild Birds Unlimited. This is a great walk for the family and will run rain or shine. Dozens of bird species have been spotted at our parks thanks to our expert “eyes”. Keith and Beth Hamilton will walk you through all the best places in the park to see what you can find. Feel free to bring your own binoculars if you have them, but we will have a few pairs on hand to borrow. FAMILY FLOAT The family can come to the park and enjoy a short float down the Catoctin Creek with staff, all while staying within the park. Tubes and PFD’s will be provided and then we will head down to the creek to enjoy a lazy float to the take out spot. Bring a picnic and a change of clothes and make a day of it. CAVING FOR A DAY Join our experienced naturalist for a sneak peek at one of our local caves. Learn about the local geology and history of this hidden wonder. Participants will meet on-site. Please remember to bring: a water bottle, wear long pants, and be prepared to get a little dirty. Also athletic, walking, or hiking shoes (no sandals !) Helmets and lights provided. Cave tour (30 minutes) is mostly walking and stooping. Cave temp is 54 degrees. Trip will include a 1.5 mile hike to cave entrance along the C&O Canal (3 miles total). This hike is a figure 8 loop that crosses Burnside Bridge and follows the hauntingly beautiful Antietam Creek on the Antietam National Battlefield, location of one of the most infamous battles of the Civil War. Each hike will be defined by the mileage markers on the canal and they will be approximately 7-10 miles in length, as out and back hikes. We will do our best to accommodate each person’s fitness. SCOUT FISH AND WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT MERIT BADGE This merit badge helps a Scout understand fish and wildlife life cycles, habitat requirements, predator prey relationships, natural succession, competition, and a host of other fish and wildlife management principles. PARENT AND CHILD WATER DISCOVERY Parent and Child Water Discovery is a self-guided water exploration class for children ages 6 months to 3 years. Parents will enjoy a half hour of pool time to help their children learn elementary skills such as bubble blowing, water entry, front kicking, back floating, underwater exploration, and more.
