MESSAGE FROM The Editor
This issue is all about social impact – the powerful, inspiring difference that each of us can make in the lives of others.
In the Corporate Communications team, we’re continually awed by the selfless efforts of our colleagues who volunteer, donate, and fundraise to support local and national good causes. It’s fair to say that our employees’ spirit of giving uplifts those in need and strengthens our collective purpose to contribute positively to our communities.

We also highlight our enthusiastic support for one of our corporate charities, Macmillan Cancer Support, through the World’s Biggest Coffee
Morning. We hope this will inspire you to host your own ‘brew-ti-ful’ event in September – more details on page 37.

Marathon Man: From Asthma to Achievement
As a lifelong asthma sufferer, Chris Brooks, Project Manager at Norse, didn’t just run the London Marathon for personal achievement. His race was driven by a deep, personal connection to his chosen charity, Asthma + Lung UK. His childhood asthma was so severe that it required mid-game Ventolin treatments during football matches. The situation also touches his family, as his two sons have struggled with the condition since a young age.
The 2023 London Marathon marked his third attempt after injuries in 2020 and 2022. Despite the setbacks, Chris’s determination remained unwavering, motivated by the significant impact of lung conditions in the UK. The funds
raised by his run contribute to the charity’s vital work, including providing potentially lifesaving advice through their helpline.
In his successful run, Chris highlighted his personal triumph over asthma and the broader struggle of all those affected by lung conditions. His story embodies the resilience and spirit of those battling these conditions daily.

In early May, a charity event organised by Debbie George, Head of Financial Accounting, and her Finance department colleagues in Norwich successfully raised £1750 as part of a Coronation-themed charity event. The funds were for a close family friend grappling with stage 4 bowel cancer.
Held at Fifers Lane, the day was filled with various activities such as a Dress Down Day, a Cream Tea service, and an exciting charity raffle. The raffle boasted an array of prizes, including Norwich City Football Club hospitality tickets, hampers, champagne, and gift vouchers.
Debbie expressed deep gratitude for her team’s collective efforts, which have made it possible to
explore additional treatment options for her friend. The successful event was a testament to the enduring spirit of camaraderie and mutual support within the Norwich team. It showcased the power of community in supporting those in need.

Residents of Bishop Herbert House, a care home specialising in adults with physical disabilities, gathered at a local primary school in a heartwarming display of unity and support for those with disabilities. The assembly promoted diversity, equality, and inclusivity, particularly on disabilities.
The guest speakers shared their personal experiences living a fulfilling life with a disability. The speaker’s message was clear: while living with a disability can present challenges, leading a happy and rewarding life is possible.
Recently, a team of NorseCare wellbeing professionals organised a visit from Cuddly Cavies, a company that provides pet therapy with guinea pigs, and a visit from Alpacas, to promote a whole new approach to wellbeing.
Pet therapy boosts mood and energy levels and reduces signs of depression and blood pressure. The team wanted to focus on all areas of wellbeing, including social, emotional, and sensory.
During the visit, attendees had the opportunity to interact with the animals. They were encouraged to pet them in a safe and supervised environment. The experience was enjoyed by all, with attendees reporting feeling happy and relaxed after the visits.
The assembly allowed the children to learn more about the importance of inclusivity and kindness towards those facing
additional life challenges. The talk at the local primary school reminded us that we all have a role to play in creating a more accepting and compassionate society. In a world where differences can sometimes be a source of conflict, it is refreshing to see events like this that celebrate diversity and unite people. The assembly at the local primary school inspires other communities to follow. It is a beautiful reminder that we can all make a positive difference in the world.

Friday, 24 February 2023, marked a significant anniversary, one year since the onset of the Ukraine war.
20 21 TOPIC: WAR ON UKRAINEONE YEAR ON
AS THE CRISIS UNFOLDED 12 MONTHS EARLIER, THE RESPONSE FROM NORSE GROUP AND OUR EMPLOYEES DEMONSTRATED OUR COLLECTIVE RESOLVE.
MELISSA MOODEY LOOKS BACK AT OUR JOURNEY AND THE ROLE WE PLAYED.
In the face of adversity, our employees, partners, and suppliers came together, echoing our ethos of extending a hand in times of need. Fundraisers sprang into action, essential supplies were gathered, and individuals’ and families’ homes across the UK opened to those displaced by the conflict. Our concerted effort with Norfolk Polonia CIC, a local non-governmental organisation based in Norwich, and Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service quickly became a robust humanitarian aid initiative. Over 85 Norse Group employees gave their time sorting, packing, and preparing donated items for onward shipment. Transportation was challenging, but undeterred, lorries and vans from local hauliers laden with urgent supplies embarked on the daunting 1500-mile journey to war-torn Ukraine and neighbouring Poland and Slovakia. Dorota Darnell, Director of Norfolk Polonia, said, “The contribution that Norse Group has given us over these past few months has been invaluable. The unwavering commitment and aid have made a huge difference to those most affected.” Our efforts were more comprehensive than just logistics and volunteers. Our Catering and Cleaning divisions, along with a number of our partners, stepped up, providing much-needed food, medical, and sanitation supplies to support the cause. During one of our meetings with Norfolk Polonia, meeting with a refugee fleeing the war torn country was particularly moving. We were introduced to Tatiana, a 34-year old Ukrainian woman who fled her homeland in Crimea during the conflict to settle in Norwich. Tatiana’s journey, filled with bravery, loss, and resilience, put a face to the countless stories
of those affected by the war. With the support of Norfolk Polonia and our local community, Tatiana has found her footing here, securing employment, and is beginning to rebuild her life. Her story was a poignant reminder of the human faces behind the crisis. Reflecting on Norse Group’s involvement, CEO Justin Galliford said, “I’m immensely proud of our team, whose compassion and dedication demonstrated our commitment to improving lives, not just within the communities we serve, but in the face of global crises too.” A year on, the war is still ongoing. But the lessons learned from our collective response remind us that unity and compassion can create waves of change. We may not be donating and volunteering to the same extent today, but the memory of our response to the crisis is a testament to the spirit of Norse Group. It’s a reminder that we can pull together to make a difference when it matters most. As we mark this pivotal anniversary, we stand proud of our employees, whose tireless work has helped improve lives and instilled a sense of hope during challenging times. Their efforts reflect our enduring commitment to making a difference in any way we can. We want to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone involved. To our Norse volunteers who gave their time during work, those who supported local donation drives, and to our colleagues across the business who participated in their own ways for Ukraine. Your collective efforts have touched lives and proved that together, we can weather any storm. Though the conflict continues,we remain hopeful that compassion, unity, and resilience will continue to shine through the
darkness.

In a generous gesture, following the transfer of East Suffolk/Waveney Norse at the end of June, surplus PPE and medical supplies will find new purpose in supporting humanitarian efforts in Ukraine through donation to the British Red Cross.
After 17 years, we’ll say a sad farewell to Rick Necchi, Group IT Director, who will retire at the end of June. We caught up with Rick to talk about his career with Norse.
ONE MAGAZINE: Rick, you’ve been with the organisation for a few years. When did you join Norse Group? RICK NECCHI: I joined NPS Property Consultants in June 2006, having worked in the manufacturing industry for 30 years. OM: Can you tell us about your journey with Norse Group? How did you start, and what led you to your current role as Group IT Director? RN: Only NPS and NCS existed back then, with NPS forming the largest part of the business. joined as NPS Eastern area IT Manager. Initially, IT departments were associated with the larger NPS Joint Ventures across England, with NCS predominantly Norfolk based. In 2011, the local autonomous IT centres were collapsed into a Group-wide service managed from Norwich. This was a preparatory step for the future; consequently, I assumed the role of Group IT Director.
OM: What do you believe are your most significant accomplishments during your time at Norse Group?
RN: The Group has changed so much in my 17 years; aligning the service to the rapid growth, including the Care division and the construction of the Norse data centre in 2012, was a significant achievement. But this was only achieved with the excellent staff in
the IT Team. OM: Regarding innovation and emerging technologies, which ones are you most excited about, and how do they impact Norse Group? RN: The advancement of Artificial Intelligence embedded with the software will exponentially impact business. There is considerable debate amongst public and business commentators about the future, but companies will see changes similar to the technological impacts experienced 30 years ago. It is incredibly encouraging that Norse has invested in One Project, which provides a step onto this technological ladder. OM: What have been the most rewarding aspects of your role as Group IT Director. RN: Working with a great team of good people and contributing to what will remain a considerable player in the market. OM: What is the biggest misconception about IT teams? RN: That they are all like “The IT Crowd” on TV! The best IT support is one that is part of the business, open and communicative. Not all IT teams have those attributes, but ours does. OM: Finally, what do you plan to do after retirement? RN: I will enjoy more time with my family, particularly my young Grandson. I have a range of interests, but developing my art with more exhibiting, commissioning, and restoring and riding the classic motorcycles I have accumulated are top of my list!
OM: Thanks for your time, Rick, and on behalf of all your colleagues at Norse Group, we wish you all the very best in your retirement.
WISHING YOU THE BEST, RICK

ONE MAG: KIMBERLEY, CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR JOURNEY FROM WORKING AS A HOUSEKEEPING TEAM MEMBER TO JOINING THE PAYROLL TEAM?
KIMBERLEY: In my role as a cleaner at Norse Group’s Head Office, I interacted and built relationships with staff while setting up meeting rooms. I was often asked if I’d consider an office job. Initially, I thought I couldn’t do it, but with encouragement from Norse, family, and friends, I applied for a payroll administrator role.
OM: WHO HELPED OR INSPIRED YOU THE MOST WHEN YOU DECIDED TO CHANGE YOUR CAREER, AND IN WHAT WAYS DID THEY DO SO?
KD: Sherri Fox in the payroll team is my biggest role model. She started a year before me, also without any prior office or payroll experience. Seeing how far she’d come in that time made me want to achieve the same. I’m fortunate that everyone in the payroll team has guided me on my journey and been a role model in one way or another.
OM: CAN YOU TELL US HOW NORSE GROUP HELPED YOU MOVE AND GROW IN YOUR CAREER?
KD: Norse has been incredibly supportive during my career change and growth. When I started in payroll, had no prior experience. But the team and the entire Head Office were supportive and made me feel comfortable.
Norse gave me the chance to do a three-year Foundation Degree in Payroll Management. This course was a challenge for me as it involved writing assignments and taking exams, something I hadn’t done since high school. Despite my nerves, I couldn’t pass up this opportunity. The course and career change have helped me gain knowledge, experience, and confidence. The support from Norse and the payroll team throughout my studies has been amazing. I’ll submit my final assignment soon and look forward to graduating in November 2024.
OM: CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT ANY HURDLES YOU FACED WHEN MOVING INTO YOUR NEW JOB AND HOW YOU OVERCAME THEM?
KD: There have been many challenges throughout transitioning into my new role. Just turning on a computer at the start was hard enough! My biggest hurdle was my selfconfidence. Juggling studies with full-time work was demanding and stressful, but the rewards made it all worth it. The positives definitely outweighed the negatives.
OM: THIS YEAR’S INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY, WE CELEBRATED THE ACHIEVEMENTS OF WOMEN ACROSS NORSE GROUP. HOW DO YOU FEEL YOUR SUCCESS STORY CAN HELP TO INSPIRE OTHERS INTERESTED IN A CAREER CHANGE?
KD: I hope my story inspires others to embrace new opportunities. It’s never too late to switch careers. Norse offers lots of help, support and training, and many people within the business have similar experiences, so you’ll always feel supported on your journey. If you’d asked me in 2019 if I’d be a Payroll Business Partner and a graduate, I would have said no. But here I am!
We’re continuing the positive stories from International Women’s Day and sharing uplifting tales of success at Norse. Kimberley Dunthorne tells us about her remarkable career shift, moving from a housekeeping position at our Head Office to a crucial role as Payroll Business Partner.

WE ARE CHANGING
THE START OF OUR TRANSFORMATION JOURNEY.
SIAN BROOKS, CORPORATE COMMUNICATIONS MANAGER Boxing
THE START OF OUR TRANSFORMATION JOURNEY. PROJECT ONE IS A NEW AND EXCITING PROGRAMME THAT WE’VE STARTED AT NORSE GROUP TO MAKE THE WAY WE WORK SIMPLER, MORE EFFICIENT, AND BETTER CONNECTED. IT’S ALL ABOUT WORKING SMARTER, GROWING TOGETHER, AND DEVELOPING OUR SERVICES.
AND THE BEST PART? EVERY SINGLE ONE OF US WILL BENEFIT FROM THESE POSITIVE CHANGES.
We’re investing in our business so that we can continue to grow while providing an excellent service for all our customers, as well as making it more straightforward for our employees to do their jobs and connect with each other.
Project One is the innovative group-wide change and transformation programme that will introduce extensive changes to our HR, Payroll, and Finance services, so that they are delivered across the group in the same way, with consistent processes and using the same systems. These changes will allow us to work more collaboratively and support our business growth.
Most importantly the changes will improve the ways services are delivered by HR and Finance as services become streamlined to create a common way of working across all our teams.
Here’s a selection of some of the things are working on as part of Project One.
OUR NEW ENGAGE APP – KEEPING PEOPLE CONNECTED
One of the first things we’re introducing on this journey is our new Engage app which will be launched this summer and be available to everyone who works
at Norse. You’ll be able to download the app onto your smart phone or tablet and find out what’s happening in your part of the business. Another great feature is being able to post and share news, photos and ideas with your local team. It will be a real gamechanger helping all of us to connect and stay in touch.
SCREENING – IMPROVING THE RECRUITMENT PROCESS
Our transformation also introduces Screening, making recruitment more accessible and efficient for our hiring managers.
Starting this summer, our new screening process will speed up pre-employment checks and automate document processing, freeing up more time for our hiring managers to focus on recruiting the best people for Norse as we continue to grow.
REJUVENATING OUR HR AND FINANCE SYSTEMS – INTRODUCING SIMPLICITY
AND EFFICIENCY
The next part of our transformation journey will be an important set of changes to our HR and Finance systems. We know that many of our HR and Finance colleagues spend hours each week on time consuming, inconsistent processes. With Project One, we’re streamlining these processes, introducing an efficiency and simplicity that will make the lives of our HR, Finance, and all employees much easier, as people will get time back to focus on ‘value add’. There’ll be more about these changes over the coming months.
HOW WILL THIS BENEFIT YOU?
You might be asking, “What’s in it for me?” The answer is plenty! Project One will make it easier for you to do your job with better, more efficient services. For managers, new tools will help you manage people and tasks more effectively. And everyone will have access to more information, allowing you to stay informed and up to date.
Whether you’re office-based, on the frontline or leading a team, Project One has benefits for you:
Faster communication: think about how the Engage app will help teams stay in touch, post about what is happening in your area, and share how we are helping to improve peoples’ lives.
Manager-led recruitment: picture yourself as a manager, having better tools and more control over your recruitment processes.
Access to insights: imagine understanding your work better and making smarter decisions.
Future-proof technology: visualise Norse equipped with the latest technology, helping us to operate as one group, ready to meet whatever the future brings.
OUR CHAMPIONS
LEADING THE WAY
Leading us on this transformational journey are CEO Justin Galliford; Group HR Director Katie Marrison; Chief Financial Officer Zoe Repman, and Group Chief Operating Officer and Change Management Sponsor Nick Maddox. Along with Project One Programme Director, Jon Phillips, they are guiding us, ensuring we stay on track and can benefit from the full potential of Project One as it runs through 2023 and beyond.
LOOKING AHEAD
We’re not just preparing for the future but actively creating it. As we launch Engage and streamline our onboarding process, remember that this is only the start. Many more exciting developments are on the horizon, and we can’t wait to share them with you.
OUR FUTURE TOGETHER
With Project One, we’re not just making changes for the sake of change. We’re making our operations smoother, our communications more effective, and our work lives more rewarding. This transformation journey promises an exciting future for all of us at Norse Group. Together, we can embrace this new chapter and look forward to more efficient, collaborative, and innovative ways of working.
GOT QUESTIONS?
WE’RE HERE TO HELP

GET MOVING
EmbracetheEnergy: Let’sGetMovingThisSummer!
With summer just around the corner, what better time to spotlight the extraordinary benefits of staying active?
‘Get Moving Month’ is a national campaign running throughout July to get everyone, regardless of role or fitness level, up and about!
The beauty of Get Moving Month is that it’s not about running marathons or lifting heavy weights (although, if that floats your boat, more power to you!). It’s about incorporating more movement into our daily lives in fun, accessible ways.
It’s no secret that being physically active has numerous health benefits. It improves cardiovascular health, strengthens bones, and boosts mental well-being. But did you know that it also enhances productivity? That’s right –regular physical activity can improve your focus, creativity, and problem-
solving skills, contributing to your success at work.
For our desk-based colleagues, consider walking during your lunch break or standing during phone calls. You could even initiate a fun ‘stand-and-stretch’ session during team meetings. Small changes like these can help to counteract the effects of prolonged sitting. For those in more physically demanding roles, you may think you’ve got this in the bag. But remember, different types of exercise bring additional benefits.
Balance your week with some leisurely activities - cycling, swimming, or even joining a dance class could offer an exciting contrast to your workday routine.
And let’s not forget the summer holidays are upon us. This is a perfect time to get the whole family involved in outdoor activities. Whether it’s a game of cricket in the local park, a bike ride,
or a weekend hike, there’s something for everyone.
Consider setting a personal ‘Get Moving’ goal for July to keep track of your progress and maintain motivation. This could be anything from walking 10,000 steps a day, mastering a yoga pose, or discovering a new outdoor space each week.
And why not share your ‘Get Moving Month’ journey with your Norse colleagues? Inspire others by sending in photos or short stories of your activities to onemagazine@norsegroup.co.uk, or share your experiences on our social media channels using the hashtag #NorseGetMoving.
Remember, it’s all about having fun and feeling good. So this July, let’s embrace the spirit of ‘Get Moving Month’ and dance, run, jump, or stroll our way to a more active lifestyle. After all, every step, hop, or wiggle counts!

It promotes the idea that we should all listen more closely to those in need rather than ignoring them or not knowing how best to help.
By speaking openly about mental health, we can create a society where it’s easier for people to talk about their feelings without fear of judgement. The campaign also encourages us to check in on our friends and family more often— because sometimes even simply saying ‘Are you okay?’ can make a difference.
Unfortunately, suicide remains one of the leading causes of death among young people, and the stigma surrounding it is a contributing factor. This makes it difficult for those struggling to seek help, so we need to be more open about the issue to end this cycle of silence.
RAISING AWARENESS ABOUT SUICIDE
The Samaritans Talk to Us campaign is helping to raise awareness of these issues. It also encourages us all to show compassion towards one another. We need to keep talking about mental health and suicide to reduce the stigma around them— because without such conversations, many vulnerable people may not get the help they need.
We’re all responsible for looking after each other, so let’s ensure that no one goes through their struggles alone. By engaging with this important campaign, we can help to create a society where suicide and mental health are openly discussed rather than swept under the rug.
As well as the Samaritan’s annual campaign, World Suicide Prevention Day on Sunday, 10 September, marks a significant global effort to raise awareness and prevent suicide. Taking action is vital, especially for men, who are
three times more likely to take their own lives in the UK.
In the UK, official figures from The Office of National Statistics (ONS) show that in 2019 there were 6,507 suicides registered – a rate of 11 per 100,000 people. In terms of gender, 79% of those deaths were male and 21% female. Additionally, for both genders aged 20-24 and 25-34 years old, suicide rates were highest compared with all other age groups.
These statistics demonstrate why raising awareness on World Suicide Prevention Day is essential. Suicide is preventable, and everyone can play their part in reducing the incidence of suicide. This could involve speaking openly about suicide or actively supporting those struggling with suicidal thoughts.
We must also break down the stigma surrounding mental health issues and ensure that help is easily accessible to those who need it. Organisations such as Samaritans provide 24/7 emotional support over the phone, email, or text to anyone in distress or despair. And charities like Calm and Heads Together offer online resources and advice.
World Suicide Prevention Day also reminds us how vital it is to take action against suicide, particularly for men in the UK. By raising awareness and breaking down the stigma around mental health, we can create a world where help is more accessible and suicide rates are lower.
Let’s start talking about suicide and mental health today - together, we can make a difference. Please help us support the Samaritans Talk to Us campaign throughout July and World Suicide Prevention Day in September and help break down the stigma around these issues. Together, we can make a difference.

STRUGGLING TO SAVE?
Empowering Norse Group Employees with Free, Impartial Financial Support
August marks Financial Awareness Month, a time to focus on better understanding and managing our personal finances. At Norse Group, we recognise the importance of financial wellbeing and want to ensure our employees have access to free, impartial financial help and support.
In this article, we’ll explore the resources available to you and share some top tips on making the most of your hard-earned money.
FREE, IMPARTIAL FINANCIAL SUPPORT AT YOUR FINGERTIPS
There are numerous organisations and resources available that provide free, impartial financial advice for anyone seeking guidance or support. Here are a few options to help you navigate your financial journey:
Money Advice Service: An independent organisation set up by the government to offer free and impartial financial advice, covering a wide range of topics from savings to debt management.
Citizens Advice: A nationwide network of charities offering confidential and independent advice on various financial matters, including debt and debt management, benefits, housing, and employment issues.
StepChange Debt Charity: A UK-based charity providing free, confidential debt advice and support to help people overcome financial difficulties.
And remember that you can also access lots of practical help, advice and guidance from Health Assured and Wherry Credit Union.
TOP TIPS FOR MAKING THE MOST OF YOUR MONEY
With some planning and knowledge, you can stretch your income further and improve your financial well-being. Here are some tips to help you get started:
Budgeting: Create a monthly budget by listing your income and expenses to clearly understand your financial situation. This will help you identify areas where you can cut back and save.
Saving: Set up an automatic monthly transfer to a savings account to build an emergency fund and save for future goals.
Debt Management: Prioritise paying off high-interest debts first and consider seeking professional advice if you’re struggling with debt.
Discounts: Look for deals and promotional codes when shopping and take advantage of employee benefits and offers available to Norse Group staff.
Cashback Sites: Use cashback websites like TopCashback or Quidco to earn money back on your online purchases.
Free Trials: If you sign up for free trials for video-on-demand services, like Now TV, Netflix etc., smartphone apps and other services, and decide not to purchase the product/service outright, don’t forget to make sure you cancel these before the trial ends so you don’t get charged. Smaller, ongoing charges can become costly if you fail to cancel before the cancellation period.
Financial Awareness Month is an ideal opportunity to reassess your financial situation and take advantage of free, impartial advice and resources. By following our top tips and seeking support, you can work towards a more secure financial future. Remember, a little planning and awareness can go a long way in helping you get back or stay on track with your finances.

Unlocking Potential through Inclusive Learning
When we think of ‘social impact’, we often consider charitable donations, volunteer work, or fundraising. But it’s more than that; it’s about making a genuine difference in our local communities. It’s about creating opportunities and championing inclusivity, enabling everyone to contribute to our society and realise their potential regardless of their circumstances.
One way Norse Group achieves this is through ‘Work Matters’. This crucial inclusive learning initiative helps young adults with special educational needs learn essential life skills and enter the workforce.
Previously known as ‘Project Search’, the Work Matters programme is a partnership with City College Norwich. It supports young adults with learning difficulties/disabilities and enhances their employability and life skills.
We strongly believe in the value of diversity and the strength that comes from different perspectives.
The ‘Work Matters’ programme

allows us to offer work placements that expose participants to real-life work scenarios, equipping them with the necessary skills and experiences to thrive in their chosen fields.
One shining example of the programme’s success is Lewis Wise, a valued Norse Group employee for an impressive 11 years and now works as an assistant print operative at Interprint. Having started his

Jen and Darrell at Whitlingham Hall.
PLEASE GIVE US AN OVERVIEW OF YOUR ROLE. As part of our role, we care for the grounds within NorseCare sites. Our day-to-day responsibilities include mowing lawns, maintaining flowerbeds, pruning hedges, trimming shrubs, weed removal and equipment maintenance.
If we spot any trees that need treatment or are dead, we report this to the Arborist team. If we have some free time, we provide additional assistance for customers. Recently, we cleared some bed areas so NorseCare residents could grow vegetables and herbs.
HOW DO YOUR DUTIES CHANGE THROUGHOUT THE SEASONS?
In Spring, everything starts to flourish, including weeds that need removing.
As summer arrives, we spend a lot of time cutting grass; unless the weather is hot and dry, as this can damage the grass.
Towards the end of summer and early autumn, leaves start to fall, so our time is spent clearing leaves, and we also start to prune.
Winter involves tidying and getting ready for bird nesting season.
WHAT ARE YOUR TOP TIPS FOR KEEPING GRASS AND FLOWER BEDS LOOKING HEALTHY?
Mow your lawn frequently and avoid mowing more than a third off the height of the ‘sward’.
Keep your flower beds weed-free and mulch; if you have enough room, keep an area free to plant wildflowers, which support pollinators such as bees and butterflies.
WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB AND WHAT SKILLS DO YOU NEED TO SUCCEED?
The best part of working within Grounds is being outside and seeing nature daily. We are particularly fond of birds of prey and even have a monocular for bird spotting!
To work within Grounds, you need common sense, a good knowledge of plants and when to cut certain things. Teamwork is essential, and having a good partner helps! Finally, pride in your work and enthusiasm for getting your hands dirty.
WHICH GREEN SPACES WOULD YOU RECOMMEND VISITING?
Locally, Sloughbottom Park is very pleasant. If you’re looking to travel further afield, Vigeland Park in Oslo, Norway, has beautiful trees and many statues.
GRUBBING
IS WHEN YOU DIG UP ORGANIC MATTER, SUCH AS TREES, STUMPS, AND UNWANTED SHRUBS, TO REMOVE IT FROM THE EARTH.
MULCHING
IS WHEN YOU PLACE A LAYER OF ORGANIC OR INORGANIC MULCH OVER SOIL AND AROUND PLANTS TO SUPPRESS WEEDS, LOCK IN MOISTURE, AND CREATE A BARRIER AGAINST WIND AND DIRECT SUN.
AERATING
IS WHEN YOU CREATE SMALL HOLES IN THE SOIL, TO ALLOW AIR, WATER, AND OTHER NUTRIENTS TO ENTER THE ROOTS.

Supporting LGBTQ+ employees is not only the right thing to do but also crucial for the success of our organisation as we strive for equality and human rights.
Since the inaugural UK Pride march in 1972, significant strides have been made for LGBTQ+ rights. The lifting of the ban on LGBTQ+ individuals serving in the armed forces in 2000 and the 2003 legislation against workplace discrimination based on sexual orientation were crucial milestones.
