EDITORS LETTER

Oh we are bad characters. We’ve got morning-after hair, and we have thrown on our party clothes to run around in the next day. Guilty as charged! We are the naughty kids, but no naughty step for us. Oh no, we set out to be different and we know what we like.

We like to give NE Love away free, we want them to disappear, want you to pick them up and stick them in your pocket or your handbag. What we don’t want is to put a price on the cover and have any at all, none! returned.

Will this be the summer of love? Well we hope so; love is definitely in the air, disappearing in to thin air in fact, thank you for picking us up and taking us home.

These last couple of months we didn’t so much set out to rewrite the rules, as to inject some energy; aided and abetted along the way by all of the amazing things that have been going on, and as always the people that drive them.

They resonated most clearly in these past months in the incredible Northumbria University fashion show at the Baltic where the talent shone bright, and when we were bowled over by the Northern Lights, and knocked out by Shindigs shenanigans.

Yea! so that’s what’s gone before, now for the next chapter of NE Love.

Enjoy our lovingly produced number four!

THATCHER, silicon and science were just some of the inspirations for this year’s Northumbria University BA (Hons) Fashion Show at BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art which took place on Tuesday 13 May 2014. Key fashion industry figures turned out to see the internationally renowned degree course collections unveiled on the catwalk. NE Love had the opportunity to preview the final collections in advance of Graduate Fashion Week where the top collections will be picked to represent the region in London.

“Many of our Northumbrias graduates have won top awards at Graduate Fashion Week and the British Fashion Council, and have been headhunted by major fashion players.” l

dimanche midi,oui ma chérie

So,,,,, Sunday and a brand new venue, at the old Assembly Rooms on Fenkle Sreet.

Newcastle seems to be exploding with great places to go, right now so don’t miss out on this one. With it’s impeccable, well groomed staff and surprisingly affordable food Bonbar is full of surprises.

But before I tell you how fabulous the food is let me tell you, that while you can order a bottle of bubbly at Bonbar, that will cost you around seven hundred pounds, truth be told the excellent cocktails range between six and eight pounds, and the wine, between fifteen and forty pounds. So if you want to splurge go ahead splurge away, but you don’t have to Bonbar have got the mix perfectly right, here. I did say on the opening night that this place would hold its own in London Paris or Barcelona.

With that in mind, imagine my surprise to find out that a three course Sunday lunch will cost you just sixteen English pounds. I ordered the roast Northumbrian beef which was served in two huge slices of lovely pink, rare, melt in the mouth meat, savoy cabbage, roast mixed vegetables and buttery mash.

For Kyla rolled pork loin again perfectly executed, with light fluffy Yorkshire puddings, extra gravy and great house wine.

Not a trace of grey boil in the bag meat or mushy vegetables here, just great food friendly staff and beautiful surroundings l

Throughout the space, Sohe have blended modern and bold Asian design with organic and sensual elements with a surprise or two along the way making it exude personality.

This cutting-edge design stimulates and awakens the senses and sets the stage for the inspired cuisine of Martin Moore, Head chef at Sohe, and expert in contemporary in Asian cuisine.

The Cairn Group along with General Manager, Sarah Harker and Head Chef Martin Moore have spent months working on preparations for the new restaurant concept and it shows.

“To us dining isn’t just about a plate of incredible food; the overall restaurant experience has become more and more important in recent years,” explaines Sarah. “It’s not just the food that must reflect our vision and our ‘vibe’, but everything that surrounds our diners too.

From the bar to the chairs and the walls to the lighting, everything at Sohe has been specially created and that takes time. This provides our diners with a sense inspiring experience in sight, taste and touch.”

With more than 14 years experience Martin’s

culinary style draws inspiration from his love of Asian cuisine, his relaxed approach and five star hotel background along with his skills at blending flavors of the east, has led to Martin’s interpretation of modern Asian street cuisine.

“The cuisine at Sohe pushes the boundaries and goes beyond everything I have ever created. I am introducing new preparations and new ingredients,” said Martin.

“It’ll be a fusion of the senses through taste, touch and smell with a large measure of North East spirit to create a high energy, sophisticated, yet impressive dining experience.”

As if the food and the décor weren’t enough The imposing yet welcoming island bar, with crisp white marble tops, opulent mosaics and an undulating gilt sculptural ceiling to floor feature, greets guests as they enter. Serving bespoke handcrafted and take it from me frankly fabulous cocktails, a small but perfectly formed wine list and the finest teas

There is also a separate private dining room for up to 12 people. Enchantingly lit, the secluded

space radiates a soft light, creating a relaxed, luxurious, intimate atmosphere.

So whether you are after a few drinks with friends or some fabulous food Sohe is a must.

I can highly recommend the mixed tempura and the nasi goreng and personally I can’t wait to go back to try more of their exciting cocktails and experiment with mouthwatering Asian food. Sohe…… Soooo Good. But don’t take our word for it get over there l

bURGER STOP

I absolutely love this place. I fear that there might one day be long queues, especially at popular dinner, lunch times, and festival but it’s totally worth it.

The burgers here are to die for, you will never be disappointed. The interior at Burger Stop is minimal with neon, enough said, it lets the food speak for itself, its simply uber cool thanks to some really arty touches by the guys at TAC Design www.tac-design.co.uk, on the website, the menu and the branding, and a stirling job on the interior design by Dan Civico the devil is indeed in the detail.

100% British beef gourmet burgers, quality beers and eclectic sounds.

Burgers. Beers and Beats. is what they promised to deliver, and for my money they have done exactly what was said on the tin,,, or err flyer or website!

With a menu that consists of such delights for the carnivore as ‘the big cheese’, a chuck steak patty, baby gem lettuce, pickled red onion, beef tomato, red Leicester with Burgerstop sauce.

Or for the vegetarians ‘Bean thinking about a change’ sweet potato and chick pea falafel, red pepper humus, house slaw, baby gem and tomato. Some great sides too such as Confit Brioche-crumbed chicken wings,. There’s something for everyone, add to that no less than eight different wines and some really unusual beers and ciders. Yea I know in a burger bar? Check it out.

shiny as a magpie’s trinket, situated upstairs from the Toons Grainger market. Walk in and you might presume that you’ve stumbled on a formulaic re-creation of the diner genre, but you’d be wrong. No 28 is not a fauxold-fashioned spot with black-and-white shakes and brassy waitresses to put you in your place. It’s not retro-romantic, with votive candles. No 28 is a quirky presence. The staff here run the place with considerable charm and attention to detail. Making sure your visit is totally relaxed, especially if you are, as I was, in the company of, Paul as always seemingly everywhere, talking to everyone and a wonderful host.

Food-wise they specialises in some freakishly appealing combinations, some brilliant and some frivolously artistic. But be careful not to fall to much in love with the food here, while its true that I am tired of hearing that old chestnut. “locally sourced fresh food” here it couldn’t be more true. The majority of the food literally comes from the 175 year old Grainer market, now jam paced with artisan breads, specialised butchers and fish mongers the market is a pleasure to brows They could hardly have chosen a better place to open a restaurant but this of course means that the menu is constantly changing.

I was happily stunned by a gargantuan board covered in various starters, crispy blue cheese and broccoli croquettes with tomato fondu, chicken pesto ‘Genovaise’ on garlic Crostini, trio de carne, a selection of cured meats with pickles and melba toast, crispy potato skins with chilli dip and last but not least Geordie rarebit local Blagdon farm cheese on artisan toast. The food did not have one flaw, the presentation beautiful and every one of the dishes cooked to perfection. The only problem if you can call it a problem, in fact! was ours for ordering so much fabulous food because we couldn’t leave any of it.

So, our ‘starters’ were soon followed by our main courses. For me Premiun sliders, these are mini burgers, from which you choose three from a possible five and come with a choice of triple cooked chips or Cajun skins. I had chosen beef classic, Moroccan lamb kofta and fried Halumi with sundried tomato. I did a least try the triple cooked sweet fries and removed all of the burgers from the bread, the kofta’s spices were inspired, and brought memories of Morocco flooding back. The beef was top quality cooked just the way I like it, sort of char grilled. The Halumi well ,,,, I’m a self-confessed cheese addict and this believe me did not disappoint.

Paul had a huge plate of apple glazed local pork and black pudding sausages, neep and potato mash with whiskey peppercorn Jus. No one was kidding when they called this dish local, you might have guessed that a butcher just down the stairs made this divine sausage especially for No28.

I left the magpies trinket we know as No28 wondering what better way to spend a sunny Saturday afternoon, I’m still working on that one! One thing I do know for sure is that last years title of best late night venue was very well deserved, open till three a.m. every day and on weekends 28 has played host to some of the best DJ’s we have heard in town, along with the great music and music, serves up some of the best cocktails around, best late night venue this year? I think there’s a distinct possibility.

THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING ERNEST

I think its fair to say that Ernest has been one of Newcastle’s best-kept secrets! After almost two years, it’s slowly crept on to everyone’s radar, and there are several good reasons why!

Nestled away in Ouseburn, and currently surrounded by constructions sites, Ernest is a slice of heaven, refreshingly laid back and surprisingly different. As soon as I walked in I was greeted by one of the friendliest managers I’ve ever met, who not only makes sure you have everything you could possibly need or want but also has that uncanny knack of making you feel as if you’ve been a friend for years.

It was a tough decision to choose from the menu, but after trying the spiced lamb flatbread and halloumi wrap, I was only half joking when I said that if it was my last meal I’d die happy!

The portions are amazing and great value for money, and one bite into my wrap, I had decided that it was up there with some of the best meals I’ve ever come across in the city! I managed to work my way through my meal and was ready to burst, but the sweet potato chips with spicy mayo were calling out to me they are truly irresistible .The spicy mayo really packs a real kick and left an aftertaste almost as if I’d just eaten fresh chillies. I can’t say I have ever been a massive lover of salad, but the freshness of the lettuce and onions along with some of the juiciest tomatoes I’ve encountered made it irresistible and had a cooling influence and helped combat the spice of the mayo. Not only does Ernest offer all day brunch and “Build Your Own Brekkie” (which I’m determined to try!) it also offers ‘Skint & Mint’ offers from Monday to Thursdays, perfect for students, as well as showcasing some

great local DJ’s at weekends. I implore everyone to experience the open mic nights every other Thursday! The chance to see some of the amazing local talent Newcastle has to offer was a beautiful experience and something I’ll never forget! It’s such an eclectic little community of singers and poets coming together sharing their amazing gifts that it’s something I recommend that you witness first-hand.

The menu states that Ernest was ‘independently established by artists and creative people seeking alternative venues’ and that is definitely what you get! It’s such a homely and chilled out atmosphere that as soon as you walk through the door you feel incredibly welcome. This makes Ernest stand out from many other Newcastle based bars and restaurants because what it lacks in pretentiousness it makes up for in atmosphere and quality food Instantly recognizable by the giant Darth Vader painted on the side of the building, there is also an incredible collection of vintage Star Wars figurines on display.

The décor is so diverse, there are posters and artwork everywhere, on a first visit you might initially find it hard to focus on the menu! Thursday, open mic night, great food too Ernest has left a lasting impression... and it certainly won’t be my last visit! l

HAIR IT HERE FIRST… bEARDS

Over the course of history, men with facial hair have been ascribed various attributes such as wisdom, sexual virility, masculinity, or a higher status; however, beards may at times have also been perceived to be associated with a loss of refinement.

Over the past couple of years young men’s beards have saturated trendy bars and eateries alike. However this Victorian approach to facial hair is soon to be in the past if the rumours are to be believed.

According to a new study, women and men find facial hair most attractive when it is rare. When shown men’s faces men and women rated the faces with beards or stubble as more attractive than clean-shaven faces. But beards were most alluring when facial hair was rare; whereas clean-shaven faces have gained in popularity whilst hairy faces are currently the norm.

To conduct this study, as you can see, Lloyd the go to gents barber transformed our willing model with his famous wet shave using Blue Beards Revenge products – the ultimate shaving experience for real men.

Designed by a real life ‘Blue Beard’ who was bored to death with being a Desperate Dan look-alike, the flagship products in The Bluebeards Revenge range are a paraben free premium quality shaving cream. Brushless shaving solution and post shave balm with added ingredients to specifically reduce the appearance of hair growth and combat tough stubble.

The process began with a facial exfoliation followed by a pre shave cream and a steaming hot towel to open up the pores. The Bluebeards Revenge Pre Shave Oil is then used to ensure a smoother, closer and less irritating shave. Their classic shaving foam is lathered on ready for the first cut throat shave, wiped off and is then repeated to get as close a shave as possible. The luxurious post shave balm is then applied generously to soften the skin and finished off with a dash of the Blue Beards Revenge refreshing aftershave which includes notes of sandalwood and patchouli.

If you believe the rumours, be neat be street l www.bluebeards-revenge.co.uk/

TREnD ALERT

This Spring/Summer is going to be an exciting one full of unexpected delights. You thought rich auburn hair only worked for autumn/winter? Think again. We saw plenty of warm hues on the catwalks. If red is not for you, there were also icy blondes with flashes of baby pink underneath. As always with spring-summer fashion, we have seen splashes of colour everywhere but mostly bold pinks and deep reds. Good news for you lazy girls out there. Springs biggest trend is laidback, fuss free mermaid waves. Get easy texture with this look by plaiting damp hair before bed and tousling it out in the morning.

L'Oreal's "beach waves" is perfect for this. This season also saw the straight blow-dried hair low pony which has been a show and catwalk staple with sleek finishes in favour of a softer look. This would look great with the masculine tailoring in feminine textures. The up-dos are ultra

relaxed, with strands left loose for a soft, feminine feel and throwing in a flyaway braid will look great on absolutely everyone. 2013's biggest haircut the bob also stormed the catwalks this summer in all shapes and sizes from sleek and smooth the choppy and textured. If you fancy a change, we saw Chanel opt for the crop. Try either a side-swept long pixie or a close cut punk-inspired crop.

There is so much to chose from this spring/summer so pop in to Clayton and company hairdressing for your awesome do find us on the first flooor 52 Northumberland Street Newcastle l

SCREENAGE KICKS PRESENT...

When it comes to cult classics, some films never seem to get old. But there’s nothing that brings cinema to life like Screenage Kicks’ unique and immersive pop-up events. After successfully launching with two sold out screenings of The Big Lebowski at Lane7, Screenage Kicks returned on Thurs 1st May with its full throttle screening of Reservoir Dogs. Taking place in another fitting surrounding for their film choice, the Tarantino cult classic was screened in the Stephenson Boiler Shop space. Crammed into the warehouse, punters were treated to live music, DJs, Reservoir Dogette dancers and a troupe of actors, recreating some of the film’s most intense scenes. With a fully stocked bar, featuring Wylam Brewery’s Mr Blond Dog Ale and Bloodbath cocktails, served alongside Reservoir Hot Dogs and Fat Hippo’s Sliced Ear Burgers, Screenage Kicks is more than just a film screening. The pop-up cinema offers a whole new way of enjoying old favourites, in an all-round sensory experience that brings something new to Newcastle’s entertainment calendar. If the last few sold out events haven’t already confirmed their status as the event for film lovers, the Screenage Kicks team are turning it up a notch. Teaming up with Vamos Festival to celebrate all things Latino, Screenage Kicks will be back with Almodovar’s outrageous 80s Spanish sex comedy, Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down! Promising a riot of 80s fancy dress, Spanish drag queens, live flamenco dancers, actors, DJs, tapas and a fully flowing bar, on Friday 13th June, it’s definitely not one to be missed. And judging from the crowds packed into the last few events, if you don’t already have your ticket sorted then you’d better move, and fast l

S OMETHING C ONCRETE + M ODER N

In the immediate aftermath of the Second World War, industry in the North East was booming. The impoverished conditions of the 1930s that caused the town of Jarrow to march on London were a thing of the past. High demand for steel and coal secured employment at an all-time high. Having escaped the Luftwaffe relatively unscathed, poor quality of the housing stock and lack of maintenance ensured there was high demand for new housing across the region. There was an abundance of public architecture too. The gravitas of the old Victorian Civic buildings was replaced by something altogether less formal and more public. Britain’s new Welfare State called for a renewed emphasis on comfort for the many rather than luxury for the privileged few. This dogma was to transform housing, workplaces, government buildings, schools, leisure facilities and transport throughout the region.

The Welfare State found its expression in the architecture of the modernist movement. The success of the Festival of Britain, opened in 1951 had wet the public appetite for something new and

graduating architects enamoured with the teachings of the German Bauhaus and inspired by the work of Le Corbusier were ready to put these principals into practice.

Something Concrete and Modern charts the development of architectural expression in response to the economic challenges and social optimism that characterises the North East region. Often dismissed as a period of regretful architectural and planning blunders, the book will examine key buildings and projects of the era 1945-1979 that expressed gallant architectural and social ambitions of architects, engineers and public figures that lead to the vast transformation of the region’s towns and cities.

Something Concrete and Modern chose local design studio TAC Design (www.tac-design.co.uk) to complete the branding and website for the project, with supporting marketing material to follow over the coming months l

WOOD STOCK

“I remember flying in on the helicopter, looking down at all the people thinking, “Oh my god, it’s like a single living organism. An ocean of hair and teeth and eyes and arms!” The sound of the crowd was so loud you could hear it over the sound of the helicopter engine” - Carlos

Baron Wolman was Rolling Stone magazine’s first photographer. In 1969 he attended what would become the most famous music festival of all time. This June, Reel Art Press releases Woodstock, a sumptuous hardback edition featuring Wolman’s stunning photographs, published here in their entirety for the first time, alongside the worldwide launch and an exhibition in London in June.

What started as a free event advertised for 50,000, would become the most important music festival in history, attended by over half a million people, united in a message of peace, love, openness and cultural expression.

Woodstock was a defining moment for the wider counter-culture generation. “ ” comments Wolman. “Yes, the bands were first rate and there were many of them. And the setting … was picture perfect and tranquil, a bucolic setting for relaxing with friends and listening to music and getting high. But in unexpected ways, Woodstock became more than a concert for all of us.”

Wolman captured the experience and atmosphere of Woodstock like no other photographer:

Unseen photographs from the most famous music festival of all time.

“I ended up spending most of my time out in the wild with the crowd because what was happening ‘out there’ was just too interesting not to explore.”

More interested in the crowd than the performers, his photographs are hugely evocative and offer an insight into this legendary event that is rarely seen. “The thing to remember about the 1960s, even near the end in ‘69 was that everything was totally different, the behavior was new and unexpected. Plus, the 1960s were simply wildly photogenic in every way imaginable ... the changes that were taking place in the heads of the people were visually manifested. I mean, how could you not take pictures?”

This definitive photographic essay is introduced with a foreword by musician Carlos Santana and features an extensive Q&A with Baron Wolman and Woodstock creator, Michael Lang, who share their personal experiences of Woodstock; intimate stories, anecdotes and stand-out performances. This remarkable volume also includes Wolman’s contact sheets in their entirety, including outtakes. As contributor Dave Brolan comments, “It is a rare and fascinating treat when photographers allow us to see their contact sheets; imagine writers publishing their notes and ideas alongside the finished text. … What is remarkable about this selection of contact sheets is that almost every frame is as good as the next, and we get to see Woodstock exactly as Baron saw it, every single unbelievable moment ...” 2014 marks the 45th anniversary of Woodstock. This 192-page hardback edition from Reel Art Press perfectly captures the zeitgeist, the music, the drugs, the people, the sheer hedonism; the enduring legacy of the most famous festival ever. Not to be missed. The accompanying exhibition will feature highlights from the book, plus signed, limited edition prints by Baron Wolman, who will attend the UK opening and will take part in a Q&A alongside Michael Lang to kick off the exhibition l

When it comes to summer, there are three things that seem to creep into people’s minds: sunshine, beer gardens and music festivals. But if you didn’t manage to secure yourself a ticket to Glastonbury, trekking through a load of muddy fields, miles away from home isn’t really your idea of fun, never fear because the North East still has plenty to offer.

On Saturday 12th July, Corbridge Festival is returning for its fourth consecutive year. Taking place in the picturesque Northumberland countryside, the family friendly festival has been quietly building a reputation for itself with its great music, live entertainment and more!

With something to suit everyone’s tastes, this year’s line up is an eclectic mix of musical talent from headliners, Big Country and Rozalla, to local bands like Boy Jumps Ship. Along with music from Britain’s Beat Box champion Ball-Zee, Happy Daggers, Ska toons, Bessie and the Zinc Buckets, Driven Serious, Fiona Clayton, Skinny Living, Talk Like Tigers, Coquin Migale, to name a few. But even if you’re not there for the music, there’s plenty to keep you entertained with a whole host of workshops including African drumming, kid’s yoga, circus skills, body zorbing, paintballing, jewellery making, arts and crafts, and even DJ training.

Not to mention fully stocked bars offering a great selection of lager, cider and real ales from local breweries, along with last year’s very popular Champagne and Pimms bar. As well as a selection of catering stalls offering something for everyone.

More than just a great day out, Corbridge Festival offers onsite camping on both Friday and Saturday night to let music lovers really make a weekend of it! This year’s Hardwick Live will take place in the picturesque grounds of Hardwick Hall Hotel on Friday 12th and Saturday 13th September. Simple Minds will headline the Friday, with The Jacksons taking top billing on the Saturday.

John Adamson, Managing Director of Ramside Estates, said; “We are flying The Jacksons in from the USA especially for Hardwick Live. Getting them is real coup for us as they’re loved by young and old, and this is a fantastic opportunity to see them live in the UK. I’ve no doubt that they will put on a sensational performance as will our Friday headliners Simple Minds.”

The four brothers of pop legend Michael Jackson – Jermaine, Marlon, Jackie and Tito - will headline the Saturday night, performing Jackson 5 and The Jacksons hits such as ABC, I Want You Back, Blame it On the Boogie, Can you Feel it and I’ll Be There - still the best selling song in Motown history. Glaswegian band Simple Minds will headline the Friday stage. The Brit Award nominated band have had a string of hits including Alive and Kicking and Belfast Child as well as a US number one with Don’t You (Forget About Me), the anthem of 80s teen movie The Breakfast Club. Even more acts for the Friday will be announced in the coming weeks for what is sure to be an incredible night of music.

Also on the bill are rising Yorkshire act The Sherlocks. They’ve recently been taken on for management by the team behind Babyshambles, Pete Doherty and The View.

Eighties idol Adam Ant, lead singer of Adam and the Ants, will support The Jacksons on the Saturday line-up. Adam scored 10 top ten hits in the UK including three number one singles, and at one point had no fewer than eight singles in the UK Top 40 at the same time.

Soul singer Kenny Thomas, Teesside’s Cattle and Cane and London singer song-writer Emma Garrett, who cites 6 Music’s Laurene Laverne and Radio 1’s Mary Anne Hobbs as fans, will also perform on the Saturday.

Local Acts Twister and The Voluntears will also have an opportunity to perform to the Hardwick Live audience.

John added: “More than 8,500 people attended Hardwick Live last year which was tremendous in its first year and we’re hoping to attract even more families and music fans this year with our incredible line-up.

“We’re keen to promote local talent too so have included bands from the north east in the line-up for each day.” Big thumbs up from NE Love for that one John, wild horses wouldn’t keep us away especially since on top of all this, we know that Saturdays includes “The tree house DJ line up Graeme Park, Brandon Block and our boys the Manor Born residents Pete Wharrier, Rob Oxley and Michael Johnson
