Yes its taken us ages to get away this summer, we simply couldn’t leave before Hacienda Classical, or hanging out with Body Talk at Cobalt and the charming man known as Nathan Gregory Wilkins at random warehouse after parties!

We also got to party at Independent in Sunderland, we discovered new places, and even better, new friends there. Oh and while its on my mind I want to wish Sunderland all the very best with the City of Culture bid 2021. We know that in September, we will wander through the warm winds of summer’s wreckage. But my dear friends will we welcome summer’s ghost? These halcyon days of summer will be a distant memory, Tynemouth beach party forgotten, We love summertime more than anything else sometimes its the only thing that gets us through the winter, knowing that summer is going to be there……. summer 2017, sounds crazy doesn’t it?
Hey but we’re not quite done with 2016 just yet and with our next edition we are gong to have our 18th, there’s always something to celebrate, so guys I leave you with this thought. Happiness is not something you postpone for the future; it is something you design for the present l

FAMOUS FUNK band The Brand New Heavies have vowed to return to Sunderland, after thousands of music fans flocked to see them at the city’s annual Sunniside Live festival on Saturday (July 16).
Sunniside Live, which is Sunderland’s only city centre live music festival, returned to the city for the second time on Saturday with a record turn-out of crowds, close to the festival’s 4,000 capacity.
A combination of hot weather and music brought revellers in to the heart of the city to listen to headliners, The Brand New Heavies, and a host of other acts, including North East groups Smoove & Turrell, and Picnic, along with special guests Alison Limerick and Shola Ama.
Sulene Fleming, the lead singer of The Brand New Heavies, was overwhelmed by the Sunderland support, saying: “There was a fantastic atmosphere at Sunniside live, along with a great crew and awesome crowd. Everyone had a blast and we hope to come back again...”
Fellow band member Simon Bartholomew added: “We had a great day out and there was a lovely warm atmosphere - we had a blast for sure!”
The event was organised by Helen Davies and Sean Maddison who run both Bar Justice and Gin & Bear it Bar at West Sunniside and was supported by Sunderland Business Improvement District.
Helen Davies said she was delighted to see Sunniside Live return to the city:
“This year’s event was a huge success and attracted thousands of people into the city centre. The sunny weather definitely brought the crowds out and we couldn’t have hoped for a better turnout.
“We’re incredibly proud to have brought acts like The Brand New Heavies and Shola Ama to Sunderland,” she said.
“And we’re already looking forward to planning next year’s, with plans to make it even bigger and better, with plenty more bar, food and WC facilities, and even bigger acts.”
Ken Dunbar, Chief Executive of Sunderland BID, who sponsored the festival, said: “We couldn’t believe how many stories we’d heard of people travelling to Sunderland from the likes of London and Scotland to see their favourite acts.
“The festival does a brilliant job at shining a spotlight on Sunderland and helps put the city on the map as a place to see the best established and emerging acts in British music and we’re already looking forward to next year’s – roll on Sunniside Live 2017.” l
Following a string of dates across the country, Hacienda Classical made its debut performance in the North East, bringing the critically acclaimed show to Sunderland’s Herrington Country Park.
Not even the pouring rain could dampen our spirits the atmosphere was electric and we sang and danced for hours.
With a set list full of dance music classics from the heyday of Manchester’s legendary Hacienda nightclub, these hit tracks were reinterpreted by the club’s original DJs, Mike Pickering and Graeme Park, and were performed alongside the Manchester Camerata Orchestra.
The music that helped define the 80s and 90s was performed by a full classical orchestra at Herrington Country Park, alongside the influential DJs, as part of an innovative, live fusion event.
“With Mike and Graeme, the original DJs who shaped the club’s sound working alongside the orchestra, choir and guests they have created something very special, giving fans the chance to relive those glory years. And we did just that dancing the night away to all our old favourites in the beautiful surroundings of Herrington Country Park.”

Firstly I have to point out that my expectations here were very high, I have in fact known the proprietor Ben Wall for some years now and if I know anything I know that if it wasn’t done right, it just wouldn’t have got done at all.
So fear not dear reader if you’re after amazing burgers, a drinks list as long as your leg and fries to die for, Number 2 Church Lane has to be on your bucket list.
Light airy, exposed brick, fresh…… yes fresh in every sense of the word, this place oozes history but somehow manages to stay the right side of hip without being pretentious.
The crown as amicable as the staff, who simply laughed when I said I would just have a beer; as well they might because as it turns out there
are more than 80 different bottles and cans, not to mention the beers available on draught.
I went for the Tyrannosaurus Mex burger, beautiful moist (locally sourced) beef chock full of jalapeños and smothered in spicy cheese. The spicy fries that Craig opted for could have been a meal in themselves: fries, cheese, bacon and jalapeños. I could go on about the delights that Jack Kamintzis is whipping up in that kitchen, but I wont!
Grab you coat, or shades, or both and take yourself off there. You wont regret it l

Whether it’s a rock ‘n’ roll Elvis Presley Pompadour, a sharp Ronaldo undercut, a sexy Harry Styles long haired look or a suave David Gandy textured number - just like real men, the quiff comes in all shapes and sizes and there’s one for everyone. Here we talk to master barber Mike Taylor, the founder of the British Barbers’ Association and ambassador of The Bluebeards Revenge male grooming brand, about the best ways to style the four main types of quiff. According to Mike, the secret of a great quiff lies in a good cut, the right styling products and a really good hairdryer as all the “best quiffs are blow dried into shape”.
POMPADOUR
Made popular in the modern age by arguably the manliest man who ever lived, Elvis Presley, the Pompadour is named after the mistress of King Louis XV who was apparently partial to a bit of back combing. Not for the man who likes to blend in, this quiff is bold. In order to achieve it, you’ll need bucket loads of patience and little of The Bluebeards Revenge Pomade. You’ll need reasonably long hair on top, enough to back comb and then smooth over so that the hair is swept upwards from your face and sits high, but smooth, over the top of your head. Traditionally, this look includes the sides swept upwards and back too (think John Travolta using his little comb in Grease).
You can go soft or severe with your undercut, graduate it or have it all the same length. You could even include a tramline to really highlight your chosen style. The finer details don’t matter. As for the quiff itself, have it going off to one side or use some of The Bluebeards Revenge Matt Clay to add height.
Housewives’ favourite David Gandy - often seen lazing around in just his pants - is a big fan of a textured quiff. It’s designed to look dishevelled but not shabby, sleek but not contrived. A look the manly supermodel can indeed pull off. This style should look like it’s naturally taken shape after you’ve run your fingers through your mane. Try using The Bluebeards Revenge Conditioner for added shine.
Teamed with medium to long length hair this is a grungier quiff than most. Harry Styles rocks it well. This look is ideal for those with a natural curl in their hair and those who like to look natural. But be cautious, you’re aiming for just-out-of-bed sex God not raking-in-bins tramp. Q. What first attracted you barbering?
A. When I first started work I had a job at the family firm as an electrician, I wasn’t really feeling fulfilled and was looking for my next adventure. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a barber, not only that but I wanted to be a barber in Newcastle. I started looking round for courses and I wanted something really high end so I went to Gents of London Barber Academy.
Q. So, did you come out of the Academy and open up Mr Tilly’s right away?
A. No, I worked all over the place, but it was still my dream to have a place of my own in the North East as soon as the place on High Bridge became available, I went for it!
Q. Competition’s pretty fierce these days, what makes Mr Tilly’s stand out from the crowd?
A. I think we found a niche in the market, we have taken what is a very traditional business and brought it bang up to date. Apart from the fact that we use and are endorsed by premium product, Hairbond, we offer skin detox, steam facials, nasal waxing and face masks to name but a few and are constantly adding to our list of services.
Q. So, what’s next for Mr Tilly?
A. We’ve just opened up the downstairs space to sell clothing. We’ve got some great stuff by great local designers like Chain & Able. So we just plan on pushing forward, listening to our customers and finding out exactly what it is that they’re after. Watch this space.

There are many words that come to mind when you think of the atmosphere at 97 & Social. If we had to condense it down to a few, it would be the following; friendly and hospitable, with a sophisticated edge... And that’s just the staff!
This restaurant, along with its sister restaurant SoHe, has become the go-to spot for fine dining in the heart of Jesmond, so we couldn’t wait to get stuck into some of their delicious food!
After being spoiled by the huge selection of wines on offer, we opted for a Malbec, rich and fruity, it was the perfect accompaniment for the lamb and the beef, both of which were tender and delicious. The impeccably arranged Sunday lunch also came with with huge Yorkshire puddings, creamy mashed potato and a wonderful caramelised onion with star anise, a bowl of al dente fresh greens, a mixture of broccoli peas and green beans.
As if the main course wasn’t enough, there were three fabulous desserts
on offer. So fabulous in fact that despite the fact I never eat dessert, I couldn’t choose, so asked for half sticky toffee pudding and half vanilla ice cream. On the other plate came the banoffee cheesecake, both desserts were beautifully presented with tiny edible flowers, winterberries and sprigs of mint. So pretty, it was a shame to eat them; tasting really was believing.
Overall, the food was first-class, and the staff went the extra mile to ensure our lunch was perfect. We highly recommend this place if you want a meal that will pleasure all your senses and leave you thinking about seconds… And thirds if you can manage them l

You might think that rocking up on a Friday of a bank holiday weekend for dinner sans reservation could be a bad idea. Wrong! This particular Friday, having had only what can be described as a distraught day at work, we headed down the road to cheer ourselves up with some cocktails, beer and some great food. It was then that we met the lovely Lucy, think J-Lo in ‘Monster in Law,’ bubbly, direct and very, very smiley. Within seconds we were seated and told all about what was on offer and pints of beer from the huge selection available appeared miraculously.
Now for the food for me, GLENARM BRISKET, O’ so tender! Glenarm dry-aged short horn beef, mustard and house spice rubbed, 14 hour hickory smoked with pickled jalapeños, heaven on a plate! For my side I added roast corn on the cob, you never seem to get that quite right at home do you? Golden, roasted and buttered it was perfect.
For Charles, RACK O’ RIBS, house spice rubbed, 5 hour hickory smoked with BBQ molasses and tomato sauce, I don’t know which dinosaur was sacrificed for this plate, so huge was the rack of ribs that I had to help him, and we almost didn’t manage the gorgeous, spicy, thin cut sweet potato fries.
It was decided that after such a stressful day, we deserved a cocktail… or two. For me Rosie & Gin, rose petal infused Beefeater Gin, lime juice, Fentimans Rose Lemonade, Crème de Mure, I could’ve drank it forever! Charlie opted for The English Rum-Naissence, house spiced Havana Anejo Especial, Kings Green ginger liquor, apple jam, lime juice, Malbec, Rhubarb Bitters, it must’ve been fabulous, I didn’t get a taste!
I don’t think I could recommend Bierrex or the staff anymore highly, I was absolutely stunned to find out that there are lunch and brunch deals available for just £4.95 and £5.95 respectively. Sounds like we might have to give in to the wanderlust on the occasional lunchtime too, these are clearly deals too good to miss! l

I remember one evening chatting to the enigmatic Marc Lagun ( of Earl of Pitt Street Fame ) and ending up on the subject of soul music , Hoocie Coochie, our very own adopted Glaswegian Geordie Warren Thomson, and the effect that this dedication to great soul music has had on North East nightlife. It’s been a long journey from its roots in the United States in the late 1950s and early 1960s to our favourite soul club in Newcastle. Combining elements of African-American gospel music, rhythm and blues and jazz. Soul music became popular for dancing and listening in the United States and soon became popular all over the world, influencing all genres of musicians. Soul music dominated the U.S. R&B chart in the 1960s, and many recordings crossed over into the pop charts in the U.S., Britain and elsewhere. By 1968, the soul music genre began to splinter. Some soul artists developed funk music, while other singers and groups developed slicker varieties, leading to a wide range of subcultures from Detroit (Motown), rhythmic gospel sounds combined with R&B to Memphis soul, a shimmering, sultry style; Philadelphia soul, a lush orchestral sound with doo-wop-inspired vocals; as
well as categories such as Blue-eyed soul, which is soul music performed by white artists; British soul; and Northern soul, rare soul music played by DJs at nightclubs in Northern England.
Truth be told if you have always loved to dance Hoochie Coochie weekends are a must, jazz funk and live bands of a caliber rarely seen these days, and even less in the North East. Recent DJ’s sets from the likes of Joey Negro and Demitri from Paris see the place regularly sold out. So if we may, you might like to heed our advice book early and take your dancing shoes. Should you fancy a boogie one Sunday afternoon/ evening you might like to practice your moves before hand, SOSA, this Northern Soul get together grows in popularity week on week. At last a dance floor where its OK to be over 25. Have you seen me dancing? Really dancing:) l
