EDITORS LETTER

HELLO NE LOVERS.

Here we are again, and despite the conspiracies, fake news and AI general panic, we thought it might be nice to inject a little fun and think again about how lucky we really are.

I was never one to pluck petals saying “he loves me he loves me not” truth be told I would say “he loves me, he loves me more” Lol, true story! I love a win, win situation

Speaking of wins we got the lovely people at Newcastle College onboard again and wow! just wow! The cover for me was my favourite (probably because I still believe in fairies) also because if I was one, I would live in a place just like that :)

We can’t wait for the summer and I’m so impressed by the line-up for this year’s Hardwick Festival have arranged my summer around it, I’m not about to miss that again…

There are lots of new places to read about and go visit, and you can read us on your phone or tablet while you’re out and about. So GET OUT!

Lastly we sadly lost another great musician in Steve Harley, I loved a number of his tunes (Yes I’m aware that he was anything but Northern…. The clue is in the name of his band)

But I just wanted to leave you with this one and love of course, always with LOVE!

This is the question we posed to the brilliantly talented students @ Newcastle College!

/ NEL VE.CO.UK ELEVEN
I focussed on the prompt "fake it til you make it" for my piece - my inspiration for my concept was the negative influence of social media on young women. My work follows a girl's routine of faking/editing her appearance for attention in the form of likes/comments in return, essentially "making it". Natalie Foster

In the digital age, misinformation is common due to manipulation of information through biases and the omission of facts to fit narratives, especially on social media. This makes it challenging for the average person to know what is fact and what is fake. Inspired by the melding and twisting of information, I aimed to create a piece that visually represents this. Mia Routledge

The concept behind the design is I wanted to create a distorted effect that represented a sense of something not there or things aren't what they seem. My reasoning behind Donald Trump is that I asked a few people "What first comes to mind if I said to you Fake News?" and the majority of answers I received were Donald Trump . I placed the fake news text over his mouth as that's where the crap comes out of his mouth so to speak and gave him a glitch effect to represent interference like a computer virus. Chloe Ward

For the theme of ‘fake news’, I created a design around the concept of online dating, catfishing; a touch of conspiracy theories (aliens). The illustration is of a man on a date, who was meant to be a beautiful woman (as shown on the phone), only for his date to be a grotesque caricature alien of the photo. Jazz

For my design, I drew a character being sucked into a world of online fake news articles. Anna Smith

COVER WINNER

I chose A.I. as a medium for the creation of this piece as I view A.I’s use as “fake” or a forgery.

My inspiration for the room view was the fake news story from the 1920's - The Cottingley Fairy incident, made famous by Sir Arther Conan Doyle. I envisaged the ideal surroundings of cousins bedroom, while they plotted and planned to fool their family into believing that fairies lived at the bottom of their garden.

I have collaborated with Isla Usher who produced a surface pattern print for the wallpaper.

SHR OMS? YES PLEASE!

Igigi Fungi comes from a long love of all things mushroom. Interest in foraging and identification lead to a curiosity in growing mushrooms, with lockdown providing the ideal opportunity to delve deep into this passion. From the early days of a pressure cooker, some sawdust and some spores, learning and mastering the process of mushroom cultivation soon became an obsession. The business started through the sale of shiitake and lion’s mane punnets to intrigued customers at Jesmond Food Market. The Igigi Farm has since progressed from a simple tent, to a self-converted shipping container under the Tyne Bridge, to its current brick home in an Ouseburn studio. The beauty of seeing mushrooms come to fruit, and to be able to share these with the local community is such a great experience. It is a pleasure and privilege to be a part of the North East’s fantastic food scene and to supply some of our best local restaurants and shops l

BATHING BEAUTY

April and everything has woken from its winter sleep and we witches (more specifically charmers, hedge witches, healers and shaman have to. There are a plethora of tools that nature has put at our disposal. So I encourage you to get out and discover green space, take your kids, along. It’s time to enjoy the wild!

And after your walk on the wild side go to the supermarket, yes I said supermarket, or check out your winter cereal stash (specifically porridge) unless you have access to natural oats, in which case you probably know this trick.

However if you are a city dweller and have spent months cosseted in your home or office blasting the artificial heating (and probably eating the porridge) let's use it to make you look great as well as feel good.

Grab the oats grab a coffee grinder and grind them down to a fine powder. As fine as you can to almost talcum powder consistency. I will take seconds.

Now light your candles, draw yourself a bath and sprinkle the powder on the water and get in, close your eyes and soak, you deserve the treat, your skin will thank you as will your pocket.

You can buy oat bath soaks but they tend to have other additives and are very pretty expensive. l

Enjoy your lovely supple new spring skin :)

NE LOVE’S FESTIVAL SURVIVAL KIT

Side Note: Don’t forget the tent pegs

For the most of us, festival season means music, memories and mountains of mud. After months of hibernation in the cold, summer is the ideal time to let loose with great music and great friends. However, there’s nothing worse than that pang of fear when you realise you’ve forgotten your wellies (something you wouldn’t get very far without in a British festival). But fear not, NE Love has devised a checklist of this year’s festival survival kit, promised to deliver you the summer of a lifetime.

So here is the list promising festival bliss and harmony (minus the morning of regrets and blinding hangovers unfortunately) …

Number one, and a festival must if you’re setting up tent in the UK, is your raincoat. British weather is about as changeable as Taylor Swift’s relationship status so a waterproof raincoat or hooded kagool is essential for maintaining ultimate dryness. Treat your raincoat like your new best friend but if you fall out, definitely don’t bin it.

Now number two may be idiotically obvious and a packing basic

for most, but there are people out there who have arrived at festivals without a tent, and even worse, tent pegs. This being your only form of shelter for the next few days, a tent is up there with the wellies in the absolute essentials, so don’t make this rookie mistake.

Another festival must, which is believe it or not frequently overlooked, is toilet roll. As if port-a-loos aren’t traumatic enough, providing your own toilet paper often slips through the majority of festival goers mind and they’re resorted to the dreaded drip drying.

Now a harsh reality to all festival attendees – you will smell. Half a week of lousing yourself in mud and grime has ghastly effects on a person’s hygiene, so a handy bag of wet wipes and a bottle of deodorant will go a long way.

Lastly, but most importantly of all, is great company. You can attend the most extravagant, incredible festival in the world but without a campfire full of laughs and confessions, is it really worth it? Festivals are about socialising, dancing and drinking far too much, so invite your favourite pals and create a weekend to remember l

NE LOVES 10 MINUTES WITH

SPECKY CULT'S ROB

A cheeky fun chap, the type of person that keeps you on your toes wondering what he's going to say next.

As it turned out he was pretty well behaved for a Geordie with the heart of a punk rocker. And we loved the new album "A different sort of difficult" give it listen.

Q Obvious question first, where and when did the name come from?

A I miss heard conversation that was very un p.c haha!

Q It's hard to tell (the tongue in cheek name suggests northern roots) where are you all from?

A We are a bit of mixed bunch I am from Newcastle, Rob Bradford from Devon and Carol from Manchester.

Q How and when did you all meet?

A As with most bands Specky Cult members left and new ones joined, it's like the trigger broom joke from fools

and horses, changed the head a dozen times and the shank 2 dozen but it it's the same old broom.

Q The new album title "A different kind of difficult" is interesting, did something happen that brought that title to mind or is it literally that the album was a tough one?

A Yes we were with Martin @ Harbour Master studio and we were feeling awkward because we were being our usual selves and he commented that awkward is just a different sort of difficult and it stuck.

Q Who writes most of the music, is it a collective project?

A Definitely a collective effort, tho the lyrics come in to two groups the poignant and intelligent lyrics are carols, and the dick and fart jokes are mine.

Q What inspires you?

A The truth is just to enjoy it , we only do what we want to do ,so there's no pressure and we're old enough to know that this doesn't last forever so we just enjoy the moment .

Q Who were your musical heroes growing up?

A Mine were Gary Numan, Jake Burns maybe Eddie Van Halen.

Q Love the lyrics to some (most) of the songs particularly and perhaps predictably I think my favourite is 'Love Crap' and maybe 'Anthems and Tantrums' do you have a favourite?

A I always smile in Comeback Kid when Carol sings… it's not a matter of if it's a matter of when , at last count there is more of us than them. Very powerful however you take it.

NEL VE.CO.UK / TWENTY6

Q The lyrics really draw you in which is something I love (and the Punk feel of the album obviously) how long has this album been in the making?

A About a year, maybe from original songs and not all songs make the album.

Q If you could choose to play a gig anywhere where would that be? Where can we catch you live in the coming months for a taste of this new material?

A Can I have a Time Machine and play cbgb's in New York in the 70's.

Check out www.speckycult.com for a full gig listing l

TAROTSCOPES

Aries

Believe half of what you see and nothing of what you hear... Your inner knowing is the only thing that is currently trustworthy. You may be hearing many different versions of events, yet all come with some sort of agenda. Learning to trust yourself fully will cancel out any external noise and not allow you to be swayed by the opinions of others. Be discerning, be the gatekeeper of your mind.

Taurus

Wait patiently and the truth will find its way to you...Your strength currently lies in the art of doing nothing. You may feel that something is not how it seems, yet don’t go digging to try and figure it out. Clean up your side of the street then just sit back and watch, maybe buy some popcorn as what is revealed will be quite a performance.

Gemini:

Bravery is always rewarded! You may be hesitant as to what path to currently take, you could feel as if you are hanging in limbo, yet your future will be led by something from your past. Think back to 2017, what did you do then that scared you, but turned out to be the best thing for you? History repeats itself, you are getting another crack at the whip. Boldly move forward in the direction of your dreams.

Cancer:

The truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth... Usually, you are too busy drowning in your own emotions to be able to see situations clearly, yet this next month or so will have you unravelling your own stories and recognising the patterns that emerge in those of yourself and others. This is a very healing and empowering phase for you, plus you look good without your rose-tinted specs. Looking through the lens of truth will be life-changing.

Leo

It’s showtime! There is no holding you back leo, the stage is yours and it’s time to roar! Woe betide anyone who tries to steal your thunder or dismiss what you have to say, you are dealing fiercely with facts and facts only. Anyone who has been taking advantage of your good heart or who ‘expects’ more from you than you can give will be hearing some home truths from yourself. Create boundaries like a Mofo and claim your power back.

Virgo:

‘In a time of deceit telling the truth is a revolutionary act.’ Any war of words will see you coming out as victor, this isn’t because of your sharp mind and quick wit, it will come from your ability and unwavering bravery to boldly speak the truth while others remain silent. The soapbox is yours and I see you speaking loudly and with clarity to those whose brains may have been washed in the media sink. Those who may have labelled you a conspiracy theorist in the past may now be seeing you as a truth-teller. Viva la Virgo revolution!

Libra:

“Sometimes, the most haunting things are not the monsters lurking in the dark, but the demons that reside within ourselves,” This eclipse in your sign will be bringing some hidden parts of your psyche to the surface. Shadow work is never easy yet it is oh so worth it. You can never be truly honest with anyone until you take a long honest delve into the self. The problems are never ‘out there’ they are ‘in there’, so be prepared to delve deep.

Scorpio

You must be a mermaid Scorpio, as you have no fear of depths and a great fear of shallow living! There is nothing fake about you, you are fully owning your uniqueness and turning your freak button up to the max. There is a new beginning coming for you, something that may have once scared you is now looking oh so inviting. Your thirst for freedom is about to be quenched, except the unexpected, freedom tastes so damn good!

Sagittarius

Do no harm but take no shit is your current motto. You are making a stand and taking control of your life. Many may not support your plans or actions, yet that is not going to stop you. You may have been tiptoeing around a person or situation and now you are putting on your DM’s and perfecting your stomp. Live life on your terms, no one else’s. Authenticity and rebellion look good on you. Go take the lead.

THIRTY6 NEL VE.CO.UK /

Capricorn

Everything has a shelf life and something may be starting to stink! Something you may have been putting off is ready to be wrapped up and binned. Yes, this may be sad, yet you know it is inevitable. You want to live not just exist and you cannot live a lie any longer. remember every ending is also a new beginning and I feel you will soon be taking stock and taking time to smell the roses. Be a warrior, not a worrier. It’s time to do what’s best for you.

Aquarius

“Life is your teacher. How can you learn to understand your truth, if you deny your reality?” It is time to admit you are not like the others Aquarius, you don’t fit into the safe box of the world, you know there is something more and you are ready to go in search of what is currently missing. Something is stirring in your soul and you must answer the call. Do what scares you, that which is in the way is the way. Explore new avenues, do something you’ve never done before, feel the adrenaline cursing through your veins and know this is what it feels like to be truly alive.

Pisces

“The world is full of magic things patiently waiting for our senses to grow sharper.” The truth is that you are still a child wearing an adult suit. So many pressures and rules are put on you to live how people say you should, yet you are your best when you are full of wonder, have your head in the clouds and are embracing your childlike wonder. Don’t let them tame you Pisces. Be realistic, expect miracles. Remember your magic, remember you’re magic.
