There aren’t enough adjectives to begin to explain Jango Flash , this started out as an interview, but as soon we I arrived I was hit by a wall of pure energy and enthusiasm so much so that I felt like some kind of energy vampire, because when we eventually left them, let’s just say we felt way better than when I arrived. This will be from now on referred to as the JANGO FLASH EFFECT. They are (almost) all sitting with their manager at 3 Tanners Bank North Shields enjoying a pint in the sunshine

As I said it started as an interview, ME: Hey everybody, want to tell me who’s who?

JF: Hi I’m Jack singer and front man, I’m Ollie I play bass, I’m Jake I play guitar, there is no need for an introduction for the sweetheart and long- time friend of NE Love, the drummer Ed who I am reminded was responsible for drums on Sam Fenders breakthrough single ‘Play God’, but we are still a man down at this point, and I’m told by Jack that it’s the ‘flamboyant’ rhythm guitarist Sam. He wasn’t wrong, as I soon saw when I got to meet the angel faced, although as I suspected anything but, angelic, Sam. We move on to more questions, and I’m excited to hear that they believe in (as do I) kismet; or fate or whatever you want call the invisible force that has brought them together. Its even more incredible sat here looking at them because they, so look the part, they look every inch the part in fact they are in fact dedicated musicians with bags of charisma and just enough cheek, it’s the perfect recipe.

These band members have played in all kinds of other bands before, coming together. Jack has also played with Sam (Fender) and is a childhood friend of his, you may remember’’’’ we spotted Sam first too, way before he ’made it’

In 2018 Jack started writing songs and in telling me quips, there’s no one I would trust more than this guy (Ed) so he immediately got

him onboard, the rest as they say was fate, Sam first then Ollie and Jake. With Ed spotting someone with a flex peddle on a bus and a conversation that went from “nice bit of kit mate” to band mates. Divine intervention claims Jake :)

Another friend we all have in common is Kristian Atkinson, who, when he pops up in the conversation, one of them calls “the Robin Hood of punk… how cool is that? And it’s exactly what I’m gonna think every time he’s mentioned now.

I manage to get in a few more questions and Darin asks them, what venue would you most like to play in?

JF: Paradiso Amsterdam (Ed) Electric Ballroom (Sam) and The Moth Club (Jake) and Glasto crops up of course as well as festivals in Belgium (Ollie)

ME: Ideal band to go on tour with?

JF: The Strokes, This answer seems pretty unanimous and I have to say I concur, having heard them I can see how that would work.

I cannot wait to see them live, I’m more excited than they are, and considering this energy that’s saying something.

The single “Tired Eyes” will be released after the summer rounds of gigs and festivals in September. I loved it, that’s actually why this meeting came about. And with an EP due out at the very end of the year it’s a really exciting time for these guys and we highly recommend that you have them on your radar l

PARK LIFE

This was not 1994, it was in fact July 1st 2023 Coastella Festival, Percy Park yet again I find myself in North Shields, what’s going on here? some magnetic force pulling me back?

Errrr not really no, on this occasion and despite the awesome line up: Mystery Jets, Futureheads, Liam Fender, some rave bangers courtesy of Judge Jules (to name but a few) but we are excitedly here to see Jango Flash live.

We have already met and chatted to this charismatic five- piece band and been completely blown away by the raw energy.

I guess then it was no surprise that the audience (who were trying to hang on to plastic cups, hats and various festival accoutrements) were; immediately, in the first few bars of 494, bam transfixed! They have done it again it’s all eyes on them. It’s like someone threw a switch, the energy was as I expected electric, these boys are going to grab attention wherever they go. They just look like rock stars.

The soon to be released single ‘Tired Eyes’ has hit record written all over it and the charismatic lead singer Jack gave it so much energy that it belied its title.

Every single member of this band belong on a stage, I’m just surprised it’s taken them this long to get together.

Frankly seeing this band up there reminds you of why you love live music.

British climate be damned, Coastella see you next year!

I AM WHAT

Pride is now a colourful rainbow celebration of all that the LBTQIA community and everything they represent. This is as it should be, and is a far cry from the outrage that was known as the Stonewall rebellion, which was a series of spontaneous protests by members of the gay community in response to a police raid that began in the early morning hours of June 28 , 1969, at the Stonewall Inn in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of Lower Manhattan in New York City. Patrons of the Stonewall, other Village lesbian and gay bars, and neighborhood street people fought back when the police became violent. The riots are widely considered the watershed event that transformed the gay liberation movement and the twentieth-century fight for LGBT rights in the United States.

As was common for American gay bars at the time, the Stonewall Inn was owned by the Mafia. While police raids on gay bars were routine in the 1960s, officers quickly lost control of the situation at the Stonewall Inn on June 28, 1969. Tensions between New York City Police and gay residents of Greenwich Village erupted into more protests the next evening and again several nights later. Within weeks, Village residents organized into activist groups demanding the right to live openly regarding their sexual orientation, and without fear of being arrested. The new activist organizations concentrated on confrontational tactics, and within months three newspapers were established to promote rights for gay men and lesbians.

A year after the uprising, to mark the anniversary on June 28, 1970, the first gay pride marches took place in Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, and San Francisco. Within a few years, gay rights organizations were founded across the US and the world. Today, LGBT Pride events are held annually worldwide in June in honor of the Stonewall riots.

The Stonewall National Monument was established at the site in 2016. An estimated 5 million participants commemorated the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall uprising, and on June 6, 2019, New York City Police Commissioner James P. O’Neill rendered a formal apology for the actions of officers at Stonewall in 1969.

Very few establishments welcomed gay people in the 1950s and 1960s; those that did were often run by organized crime groups, due to the illegal nature of gay bars at the time. The homophobic legal system of the 1950s and 1960s prompted early homosexual groups in the US to prove gay people could be assimilated into society, and such early groups favored non-confrontational education for homosexuals and heterosexuals alike. However, the last years of the 1960s saw activity among many social/political movements, including the civil rights movement, the counterculture of the 1960s serving as a catalysts for the Stonewall riots.

The Pride movement arose from the ashes of these tragic events and now is a worldwide celebration of the LBTQIA lifestyle l

He says, she says

It’s very difficult to know where to begin really. Living in the wrong body/ gender is a hard road to travel. It brings many obstacles, which can break you or make you stronger.

I was born Brian yule in the 70s and always knew I was different my childhood was traumatic, very lonely and with just one sibling and unsupportive parents, coming out as a trans boy was out of the question.

From about the age of six I had always had the idea that I was different. I would to pay a lot of attention to what women were wearing and their makeup. For years I wondered why I looked different, why my parents would dress me differently to my sister. I couldn’t concentrate at school because it was all I could think about. I couldn’t let anybody know how I felt and at home it would have been totally unacceptable, but when I was alone, I would experiment and dress up using makeup to help me feel better about my life but it wasn’t enough I gradually got more daring

stepping outside at night when there was no one around.

I remember my grandfather coming around with the newspaper and in it was a place called Transformation in Newcastle, you could actually change for the day but you had to be over eighteen. It seemed magical to me and I made it my goal to eventually go there.

Time went on and my sister had left which left me on my own, a very bad situation for me so I left home shortly after leaving school moving in to a one bedroom flat this was the beginning of my journey, I didn’t really have contact with my parents they struggled to understand me and I found myself involved with alcohol and drugs in hindsight putting myself in vulnerable situations looking back I realise it was TIA trying to get out but I was afraid.

I was trying to be me in a world where this was not acceptable, I had to be Brian as a consequence I suffered mental health issues because of the pressure on my young mind.

At 17 I became a bit more confident, passed my driving test and

went straight to Transformation where eventually had my makeover. At last this was ME I felt alive, human, like I belonged and had a purpose but I had no idea about gender clinics or even where to purchase a wig. There were still people in my life that would not accept me I feared losing them and being alone again.

This was followed by another crazy idea. I applied for the navy and unexpectedly I had a reply within weeks and was sent on training I passed all my courses and was shipped off to sea within six months of training. It is a man’s world and my options were limited, and my lifestyle would eventually have its consequences. I remember joining my first ship carrying my bags onboard knowing I had a change of clothing and makeup in one of them and praying that I’d be put somewhere on my own.

Over the years I joined many ships following the same routines hiding from everyone as if it were dark again it had major consequences on my health I started using alcohol and drugs slowly slipping back to the place I was before. I left in my 20s I was discharged I was diagnosed with PTSD and my mental health destroyed. I was still trying to fit in and got married trying to feel like others and look normal, the married man with children and a job just like everybody else.

Eventually I told my wife that I had been this way since I was young causing the separation and loss of contact with my son. I found myself in and out of relationships trying to fit I, and have a normal life until I eventually went to my doctor and told them how I was feeling, how it was impacting my mental health and people around me.

For years been dishonest with people including myself. The doctors then referred me to the gender clinic in Newcastle.

I was to be prescribed HRT and I attended laser hair removal in my treatment started I was so excited unfortunately it was not that simple the clinic had made a mistake and I was no longer prescribed hormones I was so unhappy that I there were many suicide attempts.

I found myself marrying again and having two more children the relationship lasted 10 years but we eventually separated.

I began my permanent change at 41 years old. My kids are on board as are close friends and family I am now 45 years old and have been on HRT for 18 months, at last I am becoming the real me.

It has been a tough few years, I found myself subject to hate crime I was attacked on the street in front of my children it was horrific I had so many broken bones, but I’m a survivor and this is who I will be for the rest of my life and I will make it to my final transition. In fact I found out about NE Love through Ruth at Ruby Red Aesthetics in Sunderland who has been integral to my transformation, cheeks brows, I feel like I look like I was meant to. Because of my past experiences I have I opened my own support group for the trans community in South Shields. If I can help anyone avoid the agony of growing up the way I did that will make it all worthwhile. It is somewhere to meet like-minded and I feel like I can use my life experiences to point them in the right direction, maybe build a safe environment in the community for people to meet and even help parents understand the younger ones. Mainly I want to help people understand the pitfalls and to know there is light at the end of the tunnel in the form of happiness when you find the real you l

After a lovely warm welcome by Tove and Nicola at Ocean Zen, I was taken into the treatment room for a crystal facial with reiki chakra balance. It felt so cosy and relaxing so that when Nicola explained what she was going to do so I was completely at ease, It’s been a hectic week so it was nice just to lie down and chill.

The treatment began with a deeply relaxing facial massage using crystals to stimulate the acupressure points and then crystals where also placed all over my body.

When the crystals where placed some felt hot and others cold - Nicola explained that crystals are believed to hold and radiate energy. When you use a crystal, you are transferring your own energy into the stone, this energy transfers a temporary heat sensation in the stone. I tend to hold a lot of anxiety in my stomach, Nicola said she was drawn to that area so she altered the crystals to where they were needed. I’m unsure how long I was lying there the time just seemed to drift away.

I laughed when I opened my eyes to see how many crystals were on me, I really hadn’t felt them. I left feeling incredibly calm and positive, all the negative thoughts I had earlier had simply drifted away.

I’m guessing that there are those of you out there that think that once you have tried one crepe you have tried them all. If that’s the case I’m also guessing you haven’t spent much time in gay Paree. Guess what? you don’t need to go that far, the Nathalie has brought just that type of crêpe right here to Whitley Bay and boy can you taste those original French touches.

We have met Nathalie, before in a previous issue very amicable, very sweet, very French and always smiling.

However today I paid her a flying visit on a tight deadline an ordered her perfectly executed ‘Provincial’ a Caramelised onion chutney base topped with French goat cheese, wild rocket, red pepper and pine nuts with a freshly pressed orange juice.

Oh lala, it took me right back to my recent French holiday…I need another now! Yes both, the holiday and one of Nathalie’s creations.

So What is kombucha? And why is it so popular, Kombucha is a mildly fizzy, fermented drink made from sweetened tea and a specific culture known as a ‘scoby’, short for a ‘symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeasts’. The bacteria and yeasts in the scoby convert the sugar into ethanol and acetic acid. The acetic acid is responsible for kombucha’s distinctive sour taste and the reason why it is so good for your gut.

If you have never done anything regarding fermenting foods this is going to sound strange, but pay heed because your gut and your wallet will thank you for this one. You can buy Kombucha in 250mls cans almost anywhere now for around £2 or a litre at H&B for £5.39

But why would you when you can make your own, get the kids involved, the Scoby is pretty icky, kids love icky right? And it looks like someone’s internal organs pickled, so my kitchen right now looks like something right out of Jekyll and Hyde!

You will need a large sterile jar a breathable lid (preferably a cotton napkin and an elastic band. The scoby (you may have to buy one to begin with) but it will live and grow, then you can share it with your mates, Any old tea bags and cane sugar, my tipple is lemon and ginger but you wont need those later on, you can use just about anything, fresh mint is a lovely touch, experimenting with flavours is great fun. You will also need flip top bottles that you can pop every day fermentation = fizz.

Boil 4 t bags in a in 200 ml of water, remove tbags and as 100200 grams of sugar let it cool to about body temp and then slip in the scoby. Its that simple…. Watch the scoby grow day by day and in about a week you can pick out your scoby, and bottle your Kombucha, this is where you add your flavours blueberries are great, piece of pear ferment well but as I said grated ginger and lemon is great. You will need to pop your cork every day from about day 2 or 3, the kids will love that and we don’t want any exploding bottles, its so satisfying in a bubble wrap kid of way. I tend to put the one in the fridge that I’m using and leave the others out. Just one very important tip make sure everything is sterile you want good bacteria not the bad guys, Make a new batch when you bottle the previous one then you will never run out and as the scoby grows you can make it in larger batches just more tea and more water…simple.
