BY:MIALEROUX

Haar tweede gunstelling oomblik was die Prim bekendstelling.

Liebe Botha & Elizca Becker who received second place in the Afrikaans Ladies division

Debate is not only a competition but also a wonderful opportunity for the ladies to learn new skills they will use for the rest of their lives. I mean who doesn’t like to argue?

This year our Kasteel ladies came back with a bang and gave it their all. They showed us once again that with hard work comes great results and they did not come to play. With the help of our wonderful Arts HC Julia de Beer, who also competed, and coach- Johan (Silwer) Becker, the teams practised day in and day out to make sure they were prepared for this tense competition

Campus Debate is a yearly event where the residences compete against each other for the title of debate champions on campus.

ARTS REVIEW

The three teams consisted of one English and two Afrikaans teams. Milia Botha and Eliske van Vuuren showed the English division who is boss and did wonderfully in their debates. Our Afrikaans teams, Julia de Beer and Jeanté Fourie, and Liebe Botha and Elizca Becker, debated their hearts out and went on to the quarter-finals

Respectfully, of course…

Liebe and Elizca also went on to compete in the finals and it was the first time in years that Kasteel was represented in the finals of Campus Debate. They ended up receiving second place in the Afrikaans Ladies division.

Voluit vir Kasteel!

Our Kasteel ladies properly showed us their potential this year and we could not be prouder of them. We cannot wait to see what they bring to the table next year and to welcome new members to the debate team

IN IT TO WIN IT

The mother’s dress is made of red poppies. Red poppies are a well known symbol that can be traced back to the First World War. Red poppies are a symbol of remembrance and hope for a peaceful future. During the First World War, red poppies were a common sight on the western fron and they thrived and grew in the chaos that was war.

Kasteel and Over de Voor did a wonderful job at creating this beautiful image that is rich in symbolism

The artwork also depicts a white light shining through the window and onto the mother who is holding her baby.

Canvas is an event that the NWU hosts, where all the residences compete with their 'sleep' overnight to paint an allocated part of the amphitheatre with their design that fits a specific theme.

BY:ZANELLEDELANGE

This year the theme was “peaceful chaos” and Kasteel’s Arts HC, Julia De Beer, along with anyone who wanted to help, brainstormed a few ideas. The idea they came up with was nothing short of brilliant! Kasteel and Over de Voor created an artwork of a mother holding and shielding her baby from evil and chaos

The mother holding her child illustrates the peace that she is providing when shielding her from chaos. The chaos is illustrated as knives in the mother’s back and a violent-looking shadow that i shouting at the mother.

PROUDLY KASTEEL

Netball 3rd

In Kasteel, we rely on our sisters to support each other. Teamwork in sport is the perfect way to build a solid foundation for any good support system! Being in a team creates an environment where we are pushed out of our comfort zones to work harder for ourselves as well as our team An encouraging word on the field, a high five after a score, or even a smile when things do not go as planned cultivates the pride we have for our hostel.

From your first day as ‘ n Kasteel lady to your last day; from the first minute of the game until the last One thing is for sure, we will always go "Voluit vir Kasteel!"

Imagine singing " van my toontjie tot my kroontjie" next to the soccer field, or the pounding in your heart when the whistle blows to start the first game of the season. Standing next to your fellow Kasteel sister, your heart is bursting with pride

Kasteel Ladies Residence cultivates a spirit of good sportsmanship, healthy competition and pride in the sport we do. Kasteel offers a variety of sports from netball to soccer and even squash.

With all the restrictions put in place, it is not surprising that sport activities also got put on hold. For the matrics and first years of 2020 it was quite a disappointment. The matrics could not finish off their last high school year how they wanted to and the first years missed out on their first year in university. One thing that was greatly missed was the sport for the residence and the NWU.

We are all incredibly grateful that we have gone back to a relatively normal year. It was easy to celebrate the start of 2022 because there was so much to look forward to. Stadiums were opened for the public, giving the athletes an opportunity to show what they worked so hard for. It is an incredible privilege to have sports and aksies again in the residence and this time we should not take it for granted.

“As a second year doing sport/hockey for the first time since high school this was an amazing experience. It was quite a challenge, since most of us haven't had sports since the beginning of 2020, so the physical aspects of it were a big adjustment if you were out of practice. Although challenging, the excitement of representing my residence and building a bond with my teammates made this year ’ s sport worth it. Getting back into routine and making sure my fitness and technical skills were back on track, was a big challenge for me as I did not know at what standard to expect the hockey to be.” Chantelee Aberg, a second year who plays Hockey for Kasteel.

COVID

FEELINGS

When COVID struck in 2020, a lot of things changed. Large gatherings were prohibited, we were forced to wear masks and keep a good distance away from other people to curb the spread of this virus

VOLUIT VIR KASTEEL!

Page 8

Gina Moolman a second year resident, plays tennis for NWU and says, “I was looking forward to playing for the NWU, but we never played, we just trained every single day. We never participated in tournaments; it was always cancelled each time because a player got COVID. In December we would've had USSAS where each university would play against each other. We were really looking forward to what we had trained so hard for, but then it was cancelled a day before. It was very disappointing ”

We asked Lara to explain a simple day in her life for us:

To balance a netball career, academics, and life in a residence takes skill. Lara Mouton, 3rd year BEd student and former NWU USSA player knows how to manage it all!

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A FORMER NWU NETBALL PLAYER

Self belief and hard work will always earn you success Lara is such a good example of a well balanced Kasteel lady and we admire her for that! Balance is the key to everything. What we do, think, say, eat, feel; they all require awareness and through this awareness we can grow.

We love seeing our Kasteel sisters grow!

Of course, her academics is also waiting for her when she arrives at the residence. “I try to finish all my academics for the day in the morning. Lunch with my residence sisters cannot, of course, be left out, as well as a little chat to just increase my mood for the rest of the day.”

BY:MELINDINORTJÉ

Page 9

Her day starts 90% of the time around 05:30 where she fights her alarm so that she can be in the gym at 06:00. The gym session then lasts about an hour and a half, after which she goes back to the residence with the hope of crawling into her bed for a little while again.

Her second netball session for the day starts at 18:00 and lasts until 20:00. She then returns to the residence, where she attends to her Kasteel duties in participating in aksies and other curricular activities for the residence. Our students live at night! “If there is nothing taking place after my netball, I will simply be in bed by 9pm to be fresh for the next morning's netball Don't forget my hallway coffees and chats that usually only start here after 9pm, but I'm not complaining because that's what makes residence life so special ” Lara participates in other sports in the hostel such as basketball and athletics

LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT

Over de Voor fitted Kasteel’s needs perfectly! They are an extremely supportive and committed residence Overs supported Kasteel’s slushy sales earlier this year and gave a big effort in helping to build a float for the annual RAG. They also participated with Kasteel in the First years ’ concert. “It’s almost like being in a relationship!” says Elizmari

It all started with Zoepweek, a week where ladies' residences get to know various men ’ s residences who they could potentially 'sleep' with. This specific week is for bonding and having fun! Each residence is provided with seven different 'sleep' options.

OVER-DE-VOOR 'SLEEP 2022'

Respect, humbleness, dignity, purpose, leadership all values and characteristics that can be seen in a lion. Just like Over de Voor’s emblem. Not only does the emblem represent these values, but also the men of Overs. No wonder this residence chose this mighty creature to be their emblem! And it definitely caught Kasteel’s eye

Jerry, an HC of Overs, admitted that Kasteel was their first option, of course! With Wanda following as their second. “Kasteel is a motivated, disciplined and beautiful residence!” Jerry said with the biggest smile on his face. He was then asked to give three descriptions of Kasteel that he thought fitted the residence best Firstly, he described it as love at first sight, considering all the beautiful and intelligent ladies in Kasteel. Overs admires what Kasteel stands for and also admires the unbreakable sister bond that the ladies have.

It was indeed love at first sight! Although Kasteel could not have a “trou aksie” with Overs, the ladies will always stay their first and only love

Page 10

BY:MEGANNEPGEN

At the beginning of the year, the HC members of Kasteel sat down and formulated a specific criteria that they would want in their potential 'sleep'.

Eventually, Kasteel’s top three potential men ’ s residences were De Wilgers, Over de Voor, and Heimat. With the final vote of the Kasteel ladies, Overs took first place without a doubt!

“Kasteel wanted a residence that’s driven, matches Kasteel’s energy, and has work ethics to ensure that the residence can still succeed and reach its full potential. It was also important that the two residences’ Arts & Jool HC get along, because of all the important “aksies” and points they provide for the residences,” says Elizmari Scholtz, Social, Finance and Clothing HC of Kasteel. Not only did the HC have to get along with these men, but also the rest of the residence.

Over de Voor is a very dynamic residence, grounded on biblical values and norms They are focused on brotherhood, camaraderie, pride, and mutual respect so that its residents can be empowered to perform to benefit the university, community, the residence itself, and also its 'sleep' These are all reasons why Overs was in the top three options of being Kasteel’s 'sleep' for 2022.

Lourens Erasmus, a first year in Over de Voor, describes his residence as a “family”, because of the strong brotherly love between the men. He enjoys all the traditions and he is very proud of his residence Lourens also believes that Kasteel is the perfect “sleep” for them because of the same strong family bond that Kasteel ladies also has. Not only is this special bond appreciated but also the respect that the ladies have for one another.

MASKS OFF AND FUN ON!

Ané Hugo, Anneke Balt and Lané Ferreira on their way to the sleepOVERS at KASTEEL Aksie

The first semester kicked off with a bang! A bang of social activities! With Covid 19 regulations lifted, it was finally time to socialise. Our Social HC member and her team had many surprises in store for us. We enjoyed several 'aksies' with our fellow Kasteel sisters and other residences. After interviewing a few Kasteel residents, they agreed on a few events that stood out: the pyjama event with Over de Voor, the “wedding crashers” event with Villagers, and “The night after Vegas” event with Hombré.

BY:SUNETVERHOEF&MIADUPREEZ

The 'aksie' with Villagers was indeed interesting. The 'aksie' was held at Bourbons, with the theme of Wedding Crashers. Admittedly, the theme was difficult to dress accordingly most merely dressed either in a neat, wedding like fashion on the top and in an unwedding-like fashion on the bottom, whereas some came completely covered in white. A Villagers-resident described the evening as one he did not expect to be as fun, commenting on how he was not aware Kasteel ladies could be the life of the party.

Bo: Jacqueline Meyer & Nunro Brenkman (Villagers 1st year)

Bo Links: Chantelee Aberg, Nicole van Zyl & Jeane Janse van Rensburg

The 'aksie' with Over-de-Voor (our slepies) was also our marriage-'aksie'; the theme was sleepOVERS at KASTEEL, which required everyone to come outfitted in pyjamas! An Overs resident has quoted it being one of the strangest, most interesting “aksies” he has ever participated in, one that future marriage 'aksies' will have to work really hard to compete with The night (and Boerebar) witnessed onesies, various types of slippers, funky socks, and all round sleepover essentials

We look forward to many more events with fun themes and good vibes!

SRCS UPDATES

Kasteel hosted a lot of in person aksies where they made educational toys for the children to help them with motoric and cognitive development. 'Rising of the Future' falls under the Early Childhood Development project category and provides basic needs such as school tables and chairs, mattresses, a new jungle gym, as well as stationery. Yvonne hopes to expand her school in the future to educate even more children.

CHANGING ONE WORLD AT A TIME

A big thank you to every Kasteel lady who has a heart for SRCS. Thank you for being the change!

Yvonne, ownerof Risingofthe Future

Yvonne started her preschool 'Rising of the Future' in Ikageng in 2016 as a selfless act of giving back to the community. She says that she started the school, because she felt that no matter where you live or how much money you have, every child deserves to have an education. Her mission is to raise the future presidents, doctors, lawyers, and teachers.

SRCS is one of our residence's special committees where we give back to the people who are not as fortunate as us and change the worlds of people one by one. 'Aksies' like Barefoot Day, Canned Food Day, and Bus tours are hosted by SRCS.

“As one person I cannot change the whole world, but I can change the world of one person ”

Unfortunately, the ranking for Barefoot Day collections per residence has not yet been released, but Kasteel as a residence is proud of the contribution that we could deliver. The clothing donations collected on Barefoot Day are distributed amongst the various SRCS projects which range from schools to nursing homes. Barefoot Day had its rewards and challenges but, in the end, it is a great feeling to know that you have made a difference in somebody’s life.

Kasteel has always prided itself in participating wholeheartedly in this event and this year was no different. The goal for Kasteel during this year ’ s Barefoot Day was to reach a set kg target and to ensure that every lady in the residence participated and contributed according to their ability The vision Kasteel had was to make a tangible difference in people's lives through collecting enough clothes so that the need could be adequately addressed and each person could at least get one item of clothing. The process of collecting enough clothes can be a strenuous and difficult task since many people do not necessarily have something to give away and the collection targets are quite large.

Barefoot Day is an important event in the academic year of the NWU where all the residences on and off campus band together to collect clothing for people in need. On Barefoot Day all students at the NWU are also encouraged to walk a “mile in the shoes” of people in need Students do this by walking barefoot on campus for the entire day.

“It was my first real Barefoot Day since I was a first year during COVID. It was a hectic, nerve racking, exciting experience for me. I am proud that I could actually carry out the task set before me and make a difference for the people in need ” – Lungelwa Songelwa (SRCS and Academics HC at Kasteel involved in the collection of clothes for Barefoot Day)

First Barefoot Day since COVID

How the ladies of our residence ensured that they did their part was by participating in the various activities that ran throughout the course of the week These activities included a Life Hack video where the ladies displayed advice to the public on how to perform certain activities that can help save the environment. Second was Mr and Miss Environment, where we paired up with our buddy residence (sleep) Over-de-Voor where we designed a matching couples outfit made out of recyclable materials.

The AKSA Queens

With everyone trying to bring back the student life that once brought a spring to everyone ' s step, 'Value your Environment' week was no exception. The four day annual event which took place on the 28th-31st of March 2022 was designed to help lower the carbon footprint of the NWU students. It is during this week that students are given the opportunity to ensure that the campus environment is clean and healthy.

BY:BRITNEYBROWN

There were also great discussions held on solutions to environmental problems found on the NWU at the Great Debate, as well as at the Enviro-vision discussion. A new headache inducing element that was introduced this year on the Potch campus: The monkeys . The residence submitted a possible petition detailing how the NWU could lower the rise of the number of monkeys. The AKSA Queens, as they're informally known in the residence, brought an ethical solution which did not involve any malicious suggestions against the monkeys we coexist with. The Current Affairs HC, Dorothy Masie, when asked about the overall outcome of the event said "One thing our residence prides itself in is the beauty and cleanliness of our garden. I confidently say that we as a residence could display this throughout the whole week, while still learning about new ways to aid us in keeping the environment that way. "

CURRENT AFFAIRS

WELLNESS WEEK

BY:NEOMZILENI

To begin, the residence hosted a Healthy Food Session with dietician Annike Moller, who taught the ladies how to live "healthier by eating healthier." Our Kasteel sisters were also challenged to post a video on social media sharing healthy recipes that would be featured in the AKSA Eats Cook Book for this event.

Throughout the week, our residence played a significant role in participation

Other events held that week included "Walk a Mile in My Shoes" with Victor Matfield and Angelique Gerber, in which all students walked a mile from the amfi to Catchet Park, following Victor and Angelique. The primary goal of this event was to raise awareness about Gender Based Violence. Following that was the "No Means NO" campaign with Katinka die Kat, as well as the "Healthy Habits Hack," which promoted a healthier lifestyle and five of our Kasteel sisters and the AKSA HC engaged in personal training for physical activity.

As Queens, we understand the value of maintaining a healthy physical balance, so as a residence, we take pride in encouraging physical awareness and health. As a result, we make an effort to participate in activities that will not only improve our health but also foster a healthy working environment for all of us as hostel sisters.

Page 15

The second event was one sponsored by Thuso Health Care, SANBS, and the Department of Health that took place from May 17 19 and featured booths for blood donation, HIV testing, and other medical procedures. In this instance, our HC members were tasked with motivating the hostel ladies to stop by the stalls and engage in the health related activities. The residence also collaborated with Over de Voor, our "Sleep/Buddies," to set up booths in Lovers Lane to inform students about lung cancer and the risks associated with smoking.

The NWU took pride in hosting Wellness Week for the fifth consecutive year, believing that physical competition is the best way to encourage wellness. The annual event was held on the 16th 20th of May 2022 with the goal of raising awareness about the importance of creating a healthy work environment. For this event, all residences were required to participate in the various activities designated to create or promote physical health.

‘'NO MEANS NO’

On the 17th of May 2022, Carla Moller, a 3rd year student of our very own residence Kasteel (where she is the HC member for RAG), launched her 'No Means No' campaign on the Potchefstroom Campus, where she shared her experience as a victim of sexual abuse.

Page 16

As a female in the crowd, it gave me hope knowing that there are strong females who refuse to keep quiet about their abusive experiences.

BY:ANDYMASE

I have recently purchased one of the 'No Means No #itsnotjustoneofthosethings' t shirts and I have certainly never felt more pride in wearing a piece of clothing. The shirt connects one not only to Kasteel, but to all those individuals who have been victims to harassment and sexual violence. The shirt can be purchased via the picture below:

What is needed is more education on sexual abuse, in order to avoid insulting remarks about how women dress and questions like "What can a woman do to avoid sexual abuse?", because in reality, no amount of clothing can stop a perpetrator. Thank you to people like Carla for reminding us that our voices are heard.

The key to unlocking your power is to work at it. After all, a hard working woman is ten times more powerful than a woman who depends on others for success. Oprah Winfrey worked her way out of poverty. Marilyn Monroe persevered, even when rejected by multiple modelling agencies. Malala Yousafzai risked her life working for girls’ education. Hard work is power.

3. Empowered women empower women

1. Make peace with your broken pieces

Within a woman is the power to create, nurture, and transform. Dear Kasteel lady, you are beautiful, and you are powerful. You have a Wonder Woman inside you, and you can conquer the world.

Page 17

Throughout history, female beauty standards have severely impacted how women see themselves. A powerful woman accepts herself, even with her faults She puts in the time to face insecurities and with time, learns how to conquer them. She loves herself despite the scars, cellulite, breakouts, or curves. Beauty standards are ridiculous and who says the people who created them were perfect? Women are worth more than any standards anyway.

BY:ELISKEVANVUUREN

2. Like Rihanna said: Work, work, work!

HOW TO UNLOCK YOUR FEMININE POWER

Some women are lost in the fire; others become it There is no power like that of a woman. The leaders of households and nations alike, women have always had the power to change the world. Here is how to unlock the full potential of your feminine power and go into the world empowered, stronger, and ready to face any obstacle that comes your way.

No one knows what it’s like to be a woman except for other women. However, there are still women out there who feel the need to belittle their sisters. Empowering others doesn’t only unlock your own power, but like a butterfly effect tends to make others feel more confident about themselves. The way to do this is to simply be a cheerleader. Celebrate your sisters’ achievements and lift them up in times of doubt. Mean girl behaviour is for the weak. Powerful women understand the impact that kindness can have on a person ’ s life

Orange, yellow, green and all the colours we once deemed to be “flashy” or “ugly” are now starting to become the staple pieces in everyone ’ s closets.

BY:ZANELLEDELANGE

If bright and flashy aren’t your thing, you don’t have to jump on the bandwagon and go buying new clothes just to fit in. Each person has a different style, and each style is beautiful in its own way. Fashion is dynamic and it changes often, wear something you like that makes you feel confident Remember, style, especially good style, is in the eye of the beholder, or in this case the wearer.

SISTERHOOD OF THE TRAVELING PAGES

“I couldn’t put the book down. We were on holiday and I read the book all the way to the Cape, during the visit, and on the drive back. I finished it that evening This book reminded me of the joys of reading. This book was also mindboggling; to this day I am not sure what to feel. It was truly such a creepy , intriguing, perplexing read.”

“The Sun and Her Flowers” by Rupi Kaur

We all know and have watched the movie, Legally Blonde Well, not to contradict style icon Elle Woods, who said, “Whoever said orange is the new black was seriously deranged”, but colourful tops are making a huge comeback!

Mia du Preez : “Verity” by Colleen Hoover

“This book is magical, providing you with 101 lessons on how to achieve happiness, be inspired, and live a peaceful life. The best part is that the chapters are short and addictive, so it doesn’t take long to finish the whole book. I would definitely recommend this book if you are feeling down, and you want to get back on track again ”

Eliske van Vuuren : “Life Lessons from the Monk who Sold His Ferrari” by Robin Sharma

So called “ugly” sweaters are also making a huge comeback. These sweaters normally have patterns on them and were deemed as “ugly” or “too vintage” to be worn. Pair them with a good set of jeans and you will definitely be turning a few heads!

I would highly recommend this book to my fellow Kasteel sisters, especially those who have experienced tragedy, loss, and suffering in their lives "People must wilt, fall, root and rise in order to bloom". This book gave me so much empowerment and energy to love myself and the world we live in. I could never have imagined how important this book would become to me when I picked it up at the bookstore.”

STOP BEING TOO HARD ON YOURSELF

STEP OUTSIDE OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE

Self love is about having your own best interests at heart True self love can be present in anything that adds value to your life, from your diet, to your spiritual rituals, or the way you interact in your personal relationships. And of course a significant aspect of self-love is acceptance, being content with who you are as you are As a result, self love is empowerment. When you love yourself, life will begin to love you back.

You are a brilliant, individual being who has been imprisoned by insecurity and self-doubt. As a result, you follow all of life's dull, soul crushing rules rather than living out the amazing truth of who you truly are. The drawback is that it prevents you from living a fulfilling life. One of the biggest things that might prevent someone from loving themselves is being hard on themselves.

I know for a fact that this sounds silly, but it surely boosts one ’ s mood.

It’s no secret that the way we communicate with ourselves plays a major role in the way we see and experience the world around us. That’s why being mindful of these very delicate words we use on a regular basis is extremely important.

Stop self doubt and self sabotage. Quit talking down on yourself.
