PROUDLY KASTEEL !
BY: MARNÉ PRINSLOO
Imagine singing " van my toontjie tot my
kroontjie
" next to the soccer field, or the pounding in your heart when the whistle blows to start the first game of the season. Standing next to your fellow Kasteel sister, your heart is bursting with pride.
Kasteel Ladies Residence cultivates a spirit of good sportsmanship, healthy competition and pride in the sport we do. Kasteel offers a variety of sports from netball to soccer and even squash.
In Kasteel, we rely on our sisters to support each other. Teamwork in sport is the perfect way to build a solid foundation for any good support system! Being in a team creates an environment where we are pushed out of our comfort zones to work harder for ourselves as well as our team. An encouraging word on the field, a high five after a score, or even a smile when things do not go as planned cultivates the pride we have for our hostel.
From your first day as
‘ n Kasteel lady to your last day; from the first minute of the game until the last. One thing is for sure, we will always go

SOME LADIES, WHO WERE EXCITED FOR THE RESIDENCE AND PUK SPORT, DESCRIBE THEIR EXPERIENCES.
“As a second year doing sport/hockey for the first time since high school this was an amazing experience. It was quite a challenge, since most of us haven 't had sports since the beginning of 2020, so the physical aspects of it were a big adjustment if you were out of practice. Although challenging, the excitement of representing my residence and building a bond with my teammates made this year ’ s sport worth it. Getting back into routine and making sure my fitness and technical skills were back on track, was a big challenge for me as I did not know at what standard to expect the hockey to be. ” –Chantelee Aberg, a second year who plays Hockey for Kasteel.
Gina Moolman a second-year resident, plays tennis for NWU and says, “I was looking forward to playing for the NWU, but we never played, we just trained every single day. We never participated in tournaments; it was always cancelled each time because a player got COVID. In December we would' ve had USSAS where each university would play against each other. We were really looking forward to what we had trained so hard for, but then it was cancelled a day before. It was very disappointing. ”
COVID FEELINGS
BY: MIEKE PIENAAR
When COVID struck in 2020, a lot of things changed. Large gatherings were prohibited, we were forced to wear masks and keep a good distance away from other people to curb the spread of this virus.
With all the restrictions put in place, it is not surprising that sport activities also got put on hold. For the matrics and first years of 2020 it was quite a disappointment. The matrics could not finish off their last high school year how they wanted to and the first years missed out on their first year in university. One thing that was greatly missed was the sport for the residence and the NWU.
We are all incredibly grateful that we have gone back to a relatively normal year. It was easy to celebrate the start of 2022 because there was so much to look forward to. Stadiums were opened for the public, giving the athletes an opportunity to show what they worked so hard for. It is an incredible privilege to have sports and aksies again in the residence and this time we should not take it for granted.
Page 9 A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A FORMER NWU NETBALL PLAYER
BY: MELINDI NORTJÉ
To balance a netball career, academics, and life in a residence takes skill. Lara Mouton, 3rd year BEd student and former NWU USSA player knows how to manage it all!

We asked Lara to explain a simple day in her life for us:
Her day starts 90% of the time around 05:30 where she fights her alarm so that she can be in the gym at 06:00. The gym session then lasts about an hour and a half, after which she goes back to the residence with the hope of crawling into her bed for a little while again.
Of course, her academics is also waiting for her when she arrives at the residence.
Her second netball session for the day starts at 18:00 and lasts until 20:00. She then returns to the residence, where she attends to her Kasteel duties in participating in aksies and other curricular activities for the residence. Our students live at night! “If there is nothing taking place after my netball, I will simply be in bed by 9pm to be fresh for the next morning ' s netball. Don 't forget my hallway coffees and chats that usually only start here after 9pm, but I' m not complaining because that' s what makes residence life so special. ” Lara participates in other sports in the hostel such as basketball and athletics.
Self-belief and hard work will always earn you success. Lara is such a good example of a well-balanced Kasteel lady and we admire her for that! Balance is the key to everything. What we do, think, say, eat, feel; they all require awareness and through this awareness we can grow.
