Campus Debate is a yearly event where the residences compete against each other for the title of debate champions on campus.

Liebe Botha & Elizca Becker who received second place in the Afrikaans Ladies division This year our Kasteel ladies came back with a bang and gave it their all. They showed us once again that with hard work comes great results and they did not come to play. With the help of our wonderful Arts HC- Julia de Beer, who also competed, and coach- Johan (Silwer) Becker, the teams practised day in and day out to make sure they were prepared for this tense competition.

The three teams consisted of one English and two Afrikaans teams. Milia Botha and Eliske van Vuuren showed the English division who is boss and did wonderfully in their debates. Our Afrikaans teams, Julia de Beer and Jeanté Fourie, and Liebe Botha and Elizca Becker, debated their hearts out and went on to the quarter-finals.

Liebe and Elizca also went on to compete in the finals and it was the first time in years that Kasteel was represented in the finals of Campus Debate. They ended up receiving second place in the Afrikaans Ladies division.

Debate is not only a competition but also a wonderful opportunity for the ladies to learn new skills they will use for the rest of their lives. I mean who doesn ’t like to argue? Respectfully, of course…

Our Kasteel ladies properly showed us their potential this year and we could not be prouder of them. We cannot wait to see what they bring to the table next year and to welcome new members to the debate team.

Canvas is an event that the NWU hosts, where all the residences compete with their ' sleep ' overnight to paint an allocated part of the amphitheatre with their design that fits a specific theme.

This year the theme was

“ peaceful chaos ” and Kasteel’ s Arts HC, Julia De Beer, along with anyone who wanted to help, brainstormed a few ideas. The idea they came up with was nothing short of brilliant! Kasteel and Over-de-Voor created an artwork of a mother holding and shielding her baby from evil and chaos.

The mother holding her child illustrates the peace that she is providing when shielding her from chaos. The chaos is illustrated as knives in the mother ’ s back and a violent-looking shadow that is shouting at the mother.

The mother ’ s dress is made of red poppies. Red poppies are a well-known symbol that can be traced back to the First World War. Red poppies are a symbol of remembrance and hope for a peaceful future. During the First World War, red poppies were a common sight on the western front and they thrived and grew in the chaos that was war.

The artwork also depicts a white light shining through the window and onto the mother who is holding her baby. Kasteel and Over-de-Voor did a wonderful job at creating this beautiful image that is rich in symbolism.

Pandemonia:

“’ n wilde oproer, chaos, wanorde ” .

In 2021, Kasteel won the ladies

"Enkelsêr " and they also placed 2nd overall out of all the residences on campus. This year, we are returning to the stage for our crowns and we intend on blowing the audience and the competition away with the performance of a lifetime.

We started early in April as 16 ladies with the talent and passion for the job, and we have been growing ever since. I have witnessed every lady flourish in the environment we have created and I am proud to share a stage with them.

With the help of our music composers, our choreographer, and the exceptional musical abilities of the ladies within the sêr, we are confident that we have what it takes to make Kasteel proud. We had our sêr week from the 17th to the 23rd of July where we practised up to 12 hours a day, perfecting our sound and stage presence. As you can imagine, it was not smooth sailing all the way, and we did hit a few bumps in the road, but we overcame our obstacles as a team and only grew stronger!
