SRCS UPDATES

CHANGING ONE WORLD AT A TIME

BY: MELINDI NORTJÉ

“As one person I cannot change the whole world, but I can change the world of one person

SRCS is one of our residence

' s special committees where we give back to the people who are not as fortunate as us and change the worlds of people one by one. 'Aksies ' like Barefoot Day, Canned Food Day, and Bus tours are hosted by SRCS.

A big thank you to every Kasteel lady who has a heart for SRCS. Thank you for being the change! SRCS through Yvonne ’ s eyes

Yvonne started her preschool 'Rising of the Future ' in Ikageng in 2016 as a selfless act of giving back to the community. She says that she started the school, because she felt that no matter where you live or how much money you have, every child deserves to have an education. Her mission is to raise the future presidents, doctors, lawyers, and teachers. Kasteel hosted a lot of in-person aksies where they made educational toys for the children to help them with motoric and cognitive development. 'Rising of the Future ' falls under the Early Childhood Development project category and provides basic needs such as school tables and chairs, mattresses, a new jungle gym, as well as stationery. Yvonne hopes to expand her school in the future to educate even more children. Yvonne, owner of Rising of the Future

First Barefoot Day since COVID

BY: YANI STEYN

Barefoot Day is an important event in the academic year of the NWU where all the residences on and off campus band together to collect clothing for people in need. On Barefoot Day all students at the NWU are also encouraged to walk a “ mile in the shoes ” of people in need. Students do this by walking barefoot on campus for the entire day.

Kasteel has always prided itself in participating wholeheartedly in this event and this year was no different. The goal for Kasteel during this year ’ s Barefoot Day was to reach a set kg-target and to ensure that every lady in the residence participated and contributed according to their ability. The vision Kasteel had was to make a tangible difference in people ' s lives through collecting enough clothes so that the need could be adequately addressed and each person could at least get one item of clothing. The process of collecting enough clothes can be a strenuous and difficult task since many people do not necessarily have something to give away and the collection targets are quite large.

Unfortunately, the ranking for Barefoot Day collections per residence has not yet been released, but Kasteel as a residence is proud of the contribution that we could deliver. The clothing donations collected on Barefoot Day are distributed amongst the various SRCS projects which range from schools to nursing homes. Barefoot Day had its rewards and challenges but, in the end, it is a great feeling to know that you have made a difference in somebody ’ s life.

“It was my first real Barefoot Day since I was a first year during COVID. It was a hectic, nerve-racking, exciting experience for me. I am proud that I could actually carry out the task set before me and make a difference for the people in need. ” – Lungelwa Songelwa (SRCS and Academics HC at Kasteel involved in the collection of clothes for Barefoot Day)
